Erika, you made me buy a pressure/vac tool. You proved its usefulness over and over. Before watching your channel I was not aware how important pressure is in a saw. Thanks a lot!
Very comforting to see how clean your workspace is... not opening and repairing carburetors on a dirty piece of cardboard like so many other youtubers do.
I got my 038 magnum 2 from my uncle when he passed away 8 years ago. He bought it brand new in the late 80s,it runs great, it has a plate on it that says made in west Germany. This saw complements my awesome 066 nicely.
Really enjoy how you explain every detail of that carb repair, every part tested and verified good. The owner will have a like new saw for another 30 years. Great channel and content.
Here's my last comment Erica and Tyler. I was very pleased to watch Tyler adjust the unloaded high engine RPM with a proximity tachometer. In the early 70s, McCulloch produced a 5 cubic engine (Super Pro 80) that would overspeed to the point of engine failure. At that time, the required high engine unloaded (with bar and chain installed, of course) RPM was to be set at no higher than 11,500. I demonstrated to several people that worried "my saw isn't revving as high as the European saws do", follow the manufacturer's instructions for maximum running engine RPM adjustment and simply install a drive sprocket with one more tooth count, ìe 7 vs 8 to increase your chain speed. Anyways.. Excellent video!!! Thank you, so much 😊
Another great video post. The description of the inner worlings of a 2 stroke carb is excellent. You might want to edit it into a separate segment so it can be easily searched. It makes understanding final adjustments very easy to understand. Thanks and stay warm up there.
Another great video! I always learn something new, in addition to reinforcing the process of methodically going through the diagnostics. Carb explanation was excellent and new for me. Also, watching Tyler with the tach! Would like to learn more about the tuning process. Thank you both for your time and effort in making these videos!
I run echo red armor for the last few years. After seeing videos on the stihl oil in the silver container on how it isn't that great of an oil. I also just bought some stihl moto mix just to use in the chainsaws only. I don't run mine very often.
I believe stihl ultra was designed to work in their 4 mix engines found in blowers and trimmers. In the US I notice the return of the old Stihl orange bottle mix oil on the shelves of the local dealer.
Thanks for giving the old 038 a proper sendoff when leaving the shop. The 038 in the end, should not only start and run, but should also cut like the veteran it is. A saw shouldn't leave the shop because it runs, it should be cut verified!
Hey, I ordered myself Depstech DS520 like yours. Now watching the test and review and realised that it has 3 cameras so you can see all 360° of cylinders without need of pulling off the muffler...
I know why you can't get caught up. Because. You and Tyler are working on that Evening Wood delivery, HaHa. Thanks, Erica. I really enjoy watching you. Bring things back from the dead or graveyard.
Hi Erica, Hi Tyler, thanks for deepdiving in this Model and especially the Bing-Carburetor. Interesting that the defect nozzle did not affect the idling. Your channel has improved a lot in the last month! Thanks a lot.
Another awesome video, thank you, Erica and Tyler .DANARM chainsaws was made near a town where I live.Stroud Gloucestershire England.my father in law worked for Danarm 30+ years.the factory closed in the 1980s.
Ha…a new video to watch! I’ve just come in from getting a 010av I’ve been restoring started and running half decent. Still some fine tuning to do but it’s running and idling!! I’ve learned a lot from watching and listening to Erica go through her checks and testing. Many thanks from the UK.
I really appreciate you showing all the ins and outs of the carb passages. There's always something I have never seen before. Just thought I'd mention that I took some old buggered up screw drivers, and even a paint can opener and turned them into fuel line, grommet, intake, and clutch spring tools. Then I turned an old reciprocating saw blade into a bar cleaning tool. They all have different colored handles for quick identification when reaching for them. Great video. Thanks again guys!
I switched to Red Armor about a year ago for all my 2 cycle stuff (all Stihl) and I’m super happy with it. I wouldn’t switch back to the Stihl oil. Well worth it.
I have on many occasions used metering diaphragms that are for different carbs when the one I need isn’t available. As long as the screw holes line up and the needle fulcrum post are same, if not same file it to match . any bleed holes are either there or I punch a new hole to line up as needed. This is very helpful when in the field in the middle of nowhere getting something to run.
I have lots of manuals. I have them on almost everything I own. They're starting to drop the support of the old saws so that you have to buy new ones. Really awesome saw!!! It pays to fully test everything and make it 100% in one shot. Great job!!!! Thanks!
Yes, here I am Again I noted you do not utilize air blast in̈to a carburetor body. Perfect 👍 As you know, The high speed check valve can be destroyed with air blast. When you attached the high speed nozzle into the tygon tubing I half expected to see you lightly puff in and out of the tubing to verify the action of the check valve component. Thats how I performed the test MANY years ago

Very thorough investigation on a great vintage saw! I wonder how many shops would have stopped working on it after they got it to start? Or stopped after replacing fuel and diaphragm? I keep learning new things with every video you create.
They undercharge for the quality and skilled work they provide their customers. No one else would have been so meticulous with that saw. It has been made perfect again. 😊
Great video again Erika. I always learn so much. This vid gave me courage to give deeper maintenance to my 32 year old Stihl 026. What brand of 28” bar and chain would you recommend for my 500i (strictly personal residential use to reduce the need to bend over to buck)? Thx. Scott
Great stuff! Comprehensive examination of the carb and its function, Lots of books for reference but your knowledge is the most important thing. Been there and done that with textile technology (20years) but everything has gone to China now! Spent my last 14 working years organising asset register, planned maintenance, legionella control, in a major university in the U.K. Keep the videos coming. Most entertaining. Please send me some firewood LOL
Good morning, nice video. We can see that you love your job and you care about giving back your client chainsaw in perfect running order. I couldn’t believe the difference in the engine sound the old chaine made. She was not running happy but with the new one it is music to my ears. I think that you’re going to love the red armor oil. I hear good things about it. Personally i use Aspen 2 premixed and is worth every penny. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for another great video Erica. I’m watching while I put together a 361 that I had a dealer do a pressure/vac test and it came back with no leaks. So put a carb kit in it and I’ll be going out to the wood pile later and give it a test run
You may need to add a third shift just to repair all those orphan saws? Another saw saved! Thank you for your complete & detailed repair video's. You are the " Saw Doctor" And the doctor is in the house!
A nice powerfull Oldtimer on your Workbench.Old but running good and also heavy. Not a saw i want to work with the whole day. But for its age a very good one. Thanks for the long Video, i enjoyt it.
Hello Erica, I appreciate the video. I did some shopping online for the pressure/vacuum tester. I as surprised by the prices I found for the pump itself, like $185 USD. The kit eith the needed block-off adapters is more (~$265 for the cheapest I found). I even looked at adapting my automotive vacuum pump to measure pressure on the other side with limited success. Since I don't have regular use for such a tool to store it (aka it gets moved and I can't find it when needed), we decided our saws are running well and to clean them well and keep using them without further testing. Kind of makes me cringe, yet at this moment I can't justify the dollars and storage space for an infrequently used tool. Add one of the local dealers I asked about the fuel line tool. The guy kind of suggested he could order one since he didn't stock it. I could likely make one cheaper and as effective. I didn't pursue it further. I don't even want to ask about the pressure/vacuum test kit. And Stihl does not show these online. A scrench and T27 or T25, carb adjustment screwdriver are about the extent of the tools I have located on a dealer website.
Thank you so much for posting this excellent video. For me the high points were seeing the technical books you have -- I am very much a paper book person. My wife thinks I'm silly when I can just use the internet, but I love paper books. The Clymer manuals look excellent, so filled with detail and useful drawings. The Briggs and Stratton book also impresses me a lot. You mentioned it was costly. I'm a software developer and at one time, book publishers would really stick it to students with programming language books costing $70 and up. One series of books on the Java programming language is very pricey, but the book design, chapters, texts, tables and coding examples are excellent so I think that specific author is worth investing in for a trainee developer. So anyhow good tech books in general will be costly. I also deeply appreciate your discussion of how the carburetor for this 038 model works. This may also be the first time I've seen you work with a Bing carburetor. I was expecting to see a Walbro model. I'm not sure which is the better brand. I am also impressed with Tyler's cutting work. I could see the log rolling a bit and it worried me, but Tyler dealt with that. Overall, an extremely interesting video.
Yes that 8.64 carb is what it’s worth. I bought an aftermarket carb for an old Tecumseh snow blower. Third one worked!!!! That’s right the third one, these were 12.00 each so 36.00 and I got a good one. So if I buy any more I’ll buy three at a time 👍😵💫🤪
Red Armor is really good. I bought a gallon jug of the mix and refill the 6 gallon squeeze measure bottle. I still have about a half gallon of the regular power blend so sometimes I make it 50:1 with Red Armor and then add the power blend to make it 40:1 (looks purple). Nice video.
I love watching your videos Erica. One of my favorites in addition to yours is Just a Few Acres Farm where over the years I got to see Pete evolve his artistic abilities in creating videos. You like Pete are doing the same and its wonderful to watch you evolve your video techniques. I also love the chainsaws of course as well.
Hello Erica, EXCELLENT content as always! I understand how to easily replace nozzle valve in carburetor, however, if you want to test the nozzle valve already in the carburetor how do you remove it without damaging it to test with vacuum/pressure gauge? Thank you!
Great video I have 2 038's love them they are still like new BEST SAWS EVER OWNED CUT ABOUT 20 CORDS A YEAR ALSO USE THEM WITH MY 24 fOOT ALASKEN SAW MILL ( I BABY THEM ) EVEN IF IT TAKES A LITTLE LONGER ( I USE A 36 INCH BAR WITH 10 DEGRE TOOTH SETTINGS ) WORKS GREAT....
Can’t beat those old Stihl saws. They sound so great. Fanny how it ran one you first tried it with all the problems. Shows how well these saws were made. Great job, your customer will have a great saw now. Stay warm. Love your videos. Best regards.
The atmospheric port "bore hole" has no operational orientation but it would make sense to position it for the least amount dirt and debris exposure. There was a fair amount of debris when the cover was removed so that orientation was less than optimal.
I LOVE YOUR STAND OUT BACK WITH THE VICE MAKES IT EXCELLENT FOR TUNING THE SAW GREAT IDEA,, WE JUST HAVE AN OLD TABLE WITH A SKID ON IT COVERED IN BAR OIL FROM YEARS OF CHAINSAWS LOL,,I HAVE A NEW PROJECT TO BUILD NOW THANKS FOR THE GREAT IDEA ERICA🤔🤔 😁👍👍 HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND
Tony and Lily are adorable. I can’t help but notice Tony’s pear-shaped body. I would call him well spoiled. Those Canadian mice must be very calorie dense. 😺
Tony enjoys a diet of Salmon kibble, the odd cat treat, mice, moles, bunnies, birds, red squirrels and has even been known to capture and eat a whole weasel. He is a vicious hunter.
🎉 ERICA ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO on the 038 bing carb also the over head-walk through door seems to be working good for you also the saws keep coming in 😂 good job 😊
I really like all the information that you give during your videos. And by the way , the last piece of new equipment, that I bought brand new for my property was in the Year 2000.
I would take into consideration how clean and lubricated the recoil starter spring is too. Haven't seen any recoil assembly components cleaning and inspections yet. 😉
So happy to see a new video!! I'm ready to start searching for a small riding mower as spring will be here before we know it. Was wondering if you could advise me what's good and not good. Thanks for the video!! Have a great day!!
Hi! I would buy from your local dealer (if you have one). Here in Canada, we have box stores and dealers. Box stores only sell machines than pass the customer off to a repair shop. Find a dealer that you like and trust and buy from them. All machines require service, repair and parts from time to time.
Another very informative video Erica! That's now a nice running saw. Looking forward to your take on the red armor 2 stroke oil. I've always used the Stihl synthetic, but alot of you tube channels say it clogs the spark arrester if you don't run it full throttle all the time. I haven't had that happen on my BG86 leaf blower! 👍🇨🇦🇺🇸
Happy saturday!😊. I think i've heard that the bore hole is going to be put in the direction of the engine opposite of the airfilter because to gard it from dust. Engine that smokes alot might have a Marlboro carburatior installed🤣
Ÿou have a great awareness of carburetor details. I noted as you shuffled the pages of that 2 stroke engine book the appearance of carburetor theory of operations illustrations, too. Excellent 👍 Gotta get me a copy now
I also bottom out and count rounds out on hi and low speed mixture screws--write it down for reassembly --may be awhile--good videos -old cat mechanic. Collect -repair and cut wood with the old saws-fun--look forward to you getting to the old ones!!!!!!!!!!!!! a lot of us like vintage ones!!!!!!!!!!!
Bonjour Erica Great video on carburators inner workings. I am sure a lot of viewers learned a lot. I felt like i was in the classroom again. Continue the great work.
Nice saw and you can't beat the repair cost with all you did to it. I am hoping you do a video on that 011 you have sitting around since it is similar to what I have, the 009. Anyway always love your videos and look forward to the next one.
Well now this was an interesting video and that is one nice 038. I think that dish 038 should be around for a very long time as you have gave it a new lease on life. As far as chainsaw oil goes, I don't know doubt that I will be changing. Probably will continue to stay with the sthil full synthetic oil. I have an 036 that is 35 years old. I have never ran nothing but the sthil oil and it runs perfect. When I first bought my 036 the only kind of oil I could get that was of the sthil brand was just the original old orange bottle but when stihl switched over to the synthetic oil in I have never used else.
A lot of UA-camrs hating on STIHL HP ultra. A lot of people also recommend a richer mix on new saws as well. I guess we’ll see what the verdict is in the future.
Richard Flagg has made me a believer in Amsoil Sabre, but I'm not going 40:1. I was using Red Armor 50:1 before that with no problems at all, mainly because I have more Echo and Shindaiwa equipment than Stihl. The only problem with Sabre is that nobody keeps it in stock locally, so I have to order it.
@@stephenthomas8517 using lately 5 yrs huskys ls+, no problem with Oilin. But this is scandinavian comment. With garden eg i use only Aspen 2t. Perhaps good. Dont know. But once i forget to close can, and then i was in serious problems with my bushwhacker. Took much water, in wintertime, any fuel absorbs humidity when possible..
I just sold my 038 magnum and I’m sick about it after watching this video. It was mint condition as well . Either way, live and learn I guess. I run echo oil too and love it ! It seems really nice and does the job . Another awesome production Erica 👍 Never fail to impress me with your knowledge and professional workmanship 💪😁

I've heard good things about the SP81.
Another great video post. The description of the inner worlings of a 2 stroke carb is excellent. You might want to edit it into a separate segment so it can be easily searched. It makes understanding final adjustments very easy to understand.

I watch his channel too!
He has come a long way!
I can honestly tell you, I had no idea what I was doing coming into this UA-cam thing 🤣
That's means super Pros în action. Thank 's for your complex work.👏
Good video, enjoy it. I got about 6 steel solves. I'm gonna be fixed shortly. So have a good day and stay safe my friend
Thank you!
You guys are the best! The heated cat beds always make me smile. You know cats though, they probably wonder what took you so long…
You are a Great Teacher!
I didn't realize that until I came to UA-cam!
The atmospheric port "bore hole" has no operational orientation but it would make sense to position it for the least amount dirt and debris exposure.
There was a fair amount of debris when the cover was removed so that orientation was less than optimal.
Nicely done, great to see an older saw back working perfectly!
Have a great weekend!
Make sure the vise is TIGHT , seems
The saws vibrations can make the bar move very easily
@@StihlTyler THANKS FOR THE TIP 👍
Tony and Lily are adorable. I can’t help but notice Tony’s pear-shaped body. I would call him well spoiled. Those Canadian mice must be very calorie dense. 😺
Tony enjoys a diet of Salmon kibble, the odd cat treat, mice, moles, bunnies, birds, red squirrels and has even been known to capture and eat a whole weasel. He is a vicious hunter.
My cats are jealous of Tony’s lifestyle !
Red Armor has been my favorite mix for years. Nothing more frustrating than a crooked cutting bar and chain!
For sure! We ended up fitting that saw with a brand new bar and chain for him :)
🎉 ERICA ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO on the 038 bing carb also the over head-walk through door seems to be working good for you also the saws keep coming in 😂 good job 😊
Another very informative video Erica. You have proven to me that I need a pressure/vac tool. I’m ready for the next repair!
@CliffReynolds I've done old Homelite saws the rope was so old and stiff it almost wouldn't roll back in
So happy to see a new video!!
Thanks again !!!
Thank you!
Andreas Stihl would probably approve , I’ve seen him in a picture smoking . 🚬
great vlog nice work keep up the great vlog and thanks for share
Thank you, Lee!
Had a 038 magnum, tough as nails.brother in law still using it
They are tough saws!
Ÿou have a great awareness of carburetor details.
I noted as you shuffled the pages of that 2 stroke engine book the appearance of carburetor theory of operations illustrations, too.
Excellent 👍
Gotta get me a copy now
It's a great book! :)
Excellent video as usual guys got a great running saw now perfect👍🏴
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like the older saws better too!
Please take us on a tour of your retail store , too 😊
A tour of the store is in a previous video.
@@ronbeatty516regrettably I haven't been an audience member long enough to have seen it myself
I still have most of the books. lol! I went dug them out of storage!
Great entertaining video!
Thank you for another fine video and repair !
Love this channel!
Thank you!! 😊
Bonjour Erica
Great video on carburators inner workings. I am sure a lot of viewers learned a lot.
I felt like i was in the classroom again.
Continue the great work.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
In Canada it’s the fuel that’s a real problem, 11% ethanol in all grades
@@StihlTyler We are fortunate here. A local station sells 93 octane ethanol free fuel. I use it in all my outdoor equipment and ATVs.
I won't use hp Ultra in my my saws. Never.
Took much water, in wintertime, any fuel absorbs humidity when possible..
waiting for the 2 man Hornet… Keep up the good work u2!!!
Gus🇳🇴🇳🇴
She's on the schedule!
I just sold my 038 magnum and I’m sick about it after watching this video. It was mint condition as well . Either way, live and learn I guess.
I run echo oil too and love it ! It seems really nice and does the job . Another awesome production Erica 👍
Never fail to impress me with your knowledge and professional workmanship 💪😁
Oh no! 😬
There are 038’s everywhere. If you ever want another I’m sure you will find one 😊
The old girl is back running in tip top shape again. That 038 has some beans!
