There's realistically 2 reasons Yama didnt use his Bankai 1. He would've inadvertantly destroyed the pillars keeping Karakura town in the Soul Society, causing it to return to its place. 2. He really didn't have the chance. Once the fight started, his flames were immediately extinguished and he had to resort to destroying Wonderweiss by hand. Immediately after that, he had to block his erupting flames so they didn't, again, destroy the pillars. And lastly, he was too injured to use it when Aizen approached him, so he resorted to that forbidden Kido.
So back in the day and I mean way back in the day, there was a theory about the Espada 0 being a thing and WonderWeiss was a prime candidate for that spot (as supposed to who actually ended up being Espada 0) just a fun fact.
Makes sense to me and I think he would have been a much better choice than Yammy, especially now that I know he had like NOTHING left after what Aizen took away. Zero emotions. Zero logic. Zero. But no…Yammy. 😤

Keep in mind Yamamoto had to hold back. Had he gone all out, his reiatsu would have destroyed the pillars. This would have brought back the original Karakura town, which the Gotei 13 was there to protect.
After this battle i actually said to myself: i love yamamoto. Yes, he can be stern and stubborn and even unreasonable sometimes. However, he also has kind, caring side. And he is empathetic even though he tries really hard not to be, because of his position and duty. Such characters in position of power really speak to me

And Aizen doing that to Wonderweiss shows what his followers are to him, no surprise since he wants to be a God and has that ego to boot. These chapters were phenomenal in how they absorbed the reader; I completely forgot Ichigo was waiting for an opening until he appeared at the end, proving that even the fourth wall wasn't enough of a vantage point to see him coming. The speed with which Ichigo took the opening, too, really shows off his combat intuition. All those earlier opportunities, and he knew none of them were good enough.
Fun fact: All Hado spells over 90 are considered "forbidden" since it is implied that the spells above 90 consume your own body or require a significant sacrifice to offered up
Old man Yama may be callous, but that's kind of the epitome of what it means to be in the Thirteen Court Guard Squads. It isn't for ideals, or morality, it's to protect the 3 worlds through *ANY* means necessary. That's why Yama follows the letter of the law, that's why they were so willing to execute Rukia, and that's why they genocided the Quincy.
Well, the one time he gets to use it is also kind of underwhelming. Yamamoto is just in an unfortunate narrative position where we can never cherish his full power (he would have cut short almost the entire story).

Had Wonderweiss been naturally evolved into an Arrancar, he would probably rank between 2 and 5: he was a Vasto Lorde with the suitable power level (unlike those below Ulquiorra) a lack of exploitable devotion like Harribel, Starrk, or Ulquiorra (the latter of whom were also already Arrancars, so really, just Harribel), and without the same quirk of specific power-up conditions like Yammy. If you reread certain parts of the Arrancar Arc, you will see several hints that suggest Wonderweiss was the only real objective Aizen was looking for. The only thing he needed to win the war was something that could seal Yamamoto's flames--as soon as he creates Wonderweiss, he begins the war in earnest.
In my view, Yamamoto killing Wonderweiss is almost an act of mercy. Having your intelligence, speech, and memories taken from you is a horrible existence. Being made for the sole purpose of becoming a weapon is cruel

I never thought about it until right now, but I think Wanderweiss would be rank 3 if he was an Espada. He embodies sacrifice so well, I could see him replacing Harribel or Nelliel as the Tres Espada the same way Luppi replaced Grimmjow as the Sexta Espada, had Aizen needed to replace Harribel at any point before they invaded Fake Karakura.
I hoped wonderweiss was the 0 espada. It made so much sense as he was gettting tossed around by kensei in base yet went toe to toe againts yamamoto in resurection
The problem with yamamoto is that his power can easily destroy what he wants to protect, and that's why one of the main reason he just doesn't go and stomp over the villains at any given time, had he wanted he could've destroyed the entirety of the fake karakura town just in an effort to stop aizen
When I first seen Yamamoto appear in this arc i was super curious as a Roshi guy, just to see how strong he was & Boy was I not disappointed 😭, he displayed perfectly in the old man but still dope aspect & then it made me more disappointed that we hadnt seen more of him till that point
Wonderweiss would have been a way better choise for the Espada #0 twist. Especially if the numbering of zero was meant to denote his special purpose rather than just a ranking of power.
Honestly I kind of rank him in with the lower espada. Like, obviously fighting Yamamoto and not just immediately becoming charcoal is technically a feat But when you consider that it was basically his entire ability (in terms of abilities that would help him survive) besides the arm thing which doesn't seem terribly impressive, it's a lot less impressive in a general way. Even the explosion that nuked Yamamoto is a feat for Yamamoto, not Wonderweis, he requires a lot of setup to be as dangerous as he was. basically all of his greatest abilities are dependent on his enemies. I basically rank him around Grimmjow or maybe Nnoitra, he's no slouch but with so much of his power being dependent on his opponent I just can't imagine him approaching Ulquiorra or higher in terms of power, those guys can basically low dif a small country and I don't see Wonderweis doing the same on his own.
One thing people speculate about is there’s an actual reason why wonderweiss seemingly randomly pierced captain ukitake but I don’t think it was random I think the fact that he’s very simple minded, innocent and pure he somehow saw through and knew about ukitake and felt he was an immediate threat? (Obvs trying not to spoil about ukitake at the same time)
Yama is just so hot that nobody can handle it, if he mixed in with the rest, everyone would have ended up dead. This way, they all dropped and then he went in, knowing that it was one on one.
With what's left, I imagine we'll have about four or five more parts until we reach the next arc. Really looking forward to your thoughts on the final battle between Ichigo and Aizen.

I'm sure you would hate this. Kubo recently reafirm the idea that Espada's number are tied to their aspect of death. This means #2 will always be old age, #4 nihilism, #6 destruction, etc. This ruining the whole power scale.

He wanted to be so separate from the soul society he lost his way and his reason for doing it, abandoning his friend
That's a good analysis! Still, I wouldn't call it "her powers" because you can actually take someone else's Zanpaktou and make it your own, like Ichigo did at the beginning of the manga. He took all of Rukia's powers and her sword, but none of her Ice powers. But still, that sword was maybe a reminder of her presence and her story, plus Tosen's revenge. So you might be right.

WW is easily in the top espada level. Blitzing and oneshotting ukitake while in base, breaking the ice that was keeping ress Harribel trapped with a single scream, somewhat keeping up with Yama in ressurection and even made him bleed. Not to mention some of the best instant regen in the entire serie, one that surpass Ulquiorra's. He might fold any espada that isn't Barry(hax) or Angered ress Yammy.
While respect and fear may apply, I think the most appropriate is Aizen HATES Yamamoto (the living embodiment of the Soul Society's history) enough to kill him
Anime in this part doesn't do justice to the real feeling and impact of Aizen's cruelty. It just "another guard before the boss fight" and highlight mostly on yamamoto's strength. But seriously studio pierrot failed to showcase the true deep meaning of wonderweiss's creation and the discord between yamamoto and Aizen pov.
Yamamoto’s Bankai is God Tier.. literal “God Tier” so just have some satisfaction knowing he is as strong as you think he might be and if he didn’t shield everybody from the blast, even Aizen might have been cooked in the process. Everybody else would have been well done, Aizen probably medium lol So to go with what everybody else is saying, he can’t go full power around his allies without possibly sacrificing them in the process. Especially against somebody like Aizen.

Honestly I kind of rank him in with the lower espada.
Like, obviously fighting Yamamoto and not just immediately becoming charcoal is technically a feat
But when you consider that it was basically his entire ability (in terms of abilities that would help him survive) besides the arm thing which doesn't seem terribly impressive, it's a lot less impressive in a general way.
Even the explosion that nuked Yamamoto is a feat for Yamamoto, not Wonderweis, he requires a lot of setup to be as dangerous as he was. basically all of his greatest abilities are dependent on his enemies.
I basically rank him around Grimmjow or maybe Nnoitra, he's no slouch but with so much of his power being dependent on his opponent I just can't imagine him approaching Ulquiorra or higher in terms of power, those guys can basically low dif a small country and I don't see Wonderweis doing the same on his own.
He was willing to kill everyone else on the battlefield, if he could he would use his bankai 100%
One thing people speculate about is there’s an actual reason why wonderweiss seemingly randomly pierced captain ukitake but I don’t think it was random I think the fact that he’s very simple minded, innocent and pure he somehow saw through and knew about ukitake and felt he was an immediate threat? (Obvs trying not to spoil about ukitake at the same time)
Yama is just so hot that nobody can handle it, if he mixed in with the rest, everyone would have ended up dead. This way, they all dropped and then he went in, knowing that it was one on one.
With what's left, I imagine we'll have about four or five more parts until we reach the next arc.

I'm sure you would hate this. Kubo recently reafirm the idea that Espada's number are tied to their aspect of death. This means #2 will always be old age, #4 nihilism, #6 destruction, etc. This ruining the whole power scale.

One thing I love is is once he leaves the soul society Tosen doesn’t use his shikai or Bankai
His Zampakuto is the one he took from his friend, so he even abandoned his friends power
There are 2 takeaways I have from it
Either
1. He chose to do this as he did not want to use her powers for violence, he knew she would hate it
2. He wanted to be so separate from the soul society he lost his way and his reason for doing it, abandoning his friend
That's a good analysis! Still, I wouldn't call it "her powers" because you can actually take someone else's Zanpaktou and make it your own, like Ichigo did at the beginning of the manga. He took all of Rukia's powers and her sword, but none of her Ice powers.
But still, that sword was maybe a reminder of her presence and her story, plus Tosen's revenge. So you might be right.

WW is easily in the top espada level. Blitzing and oneshotting ukitake while in base, breaking the ice that was keeping ress Harribel trapped with a single scream, somewhat keeping up with Yama in ressurection and even made him bleed.
Not to mention some of the best instant regen in the entire serie, one that surpass Ulquiorra's.
He might fold any espada that isn't Barry(hax) or Angered ress Yammy.

Anime in this part doesn't do justice to the real feeling and impact of Aizen's cruelty. It just "another guard before the boss fight" and highlight mostly on yamamoto's strength. But seriously studio pierrot failed to showcase the true deep meaning of wonderweiss's creation and the discord between yamamoto and Aizen pov.

It would be more messed up if we would see Wonderweiss before transformation like a normal good dude and after that ripped off of any intellegence.
I can see why you were looking forward to that old-man-brawl but it would have been underwhelming.
This matchup is more fitting.
Yamamoto’s Bankai is God Tier.. literal “God Tier” so just have some satisfaction knowing he is as strong as you think he might be and if he didn’t shield everybody from the blast, even Aizen might have been cooked in the process. Everybody else would have been well done, Aizen probably medium lol So to go with what everybody else is saying, he can’t go full power around his allies without possibly sacrificing them in the process. Especially against somebody like Aizen.

I mean, Wonderveis is just unpredictable and he has that retard strength, no offense to anyone. That's why he surprised Ukitake and Ukitake is really not a fighter, he is insanely strong, but his sickness is a major disadvantage.

No other espada other than yammy is stopping a Yama shikai swing ,,, flames or not ….. wonderweiss is literally 1/0 based off strength alone …. Unless you beleive harribel can catch a Yamamoto swing
