    Hi Jennifer . I love your last comment about simply allowing our feelings of discontentment to pass. I think that part of our problem as a society is that we are programmed to believe that we need to fix our feelings of unhappiness instead of recognizing that much of the time they will pass. It's ok to feel frustrated or bored with our wardrobe sometimes, it doesn't mean that we need to run out and buy something.

    I began the 10 Item wardrobe December 2018. I also divided mine by spring/summer and fall/winter. I chose every piece for spring/summer very carefully, it’s June and still haven’t even worn half of my selection. THE 10 ITEM WARDROBE IS A LIFE CHANGER! I am so happy and tell everyone about it and The Daily Connoisseur at every opportunity that presents itself. Sometimes I wonder if you get worn out talking about this subject after a decade, PLEASE DO NOT, so many women are still needing to hear this message and free themselves, like myself. THE 10 Item wardrobe has helped me in a overall minimalist lifestyle too. I am so much happier, so much freer. Keep up the good work!
    Hope you are enjoying your new kitchen, is so beautiful!

    As usual, great words of encouragement. Sometimes burnout could be caused from a totally different area of life altogether, and not really a "wardrobe" issue. A new haircut, experience, or even rearranging furniture in your home could help and give a needed boost that we're really after.

    Great video! 💕 This spring, on a whim, I decided I would set myself free from the capsule wardrobe. I returned to my old ways of online shopping sprees at cheap stores and filled my closet with new items that are already falling apart. I could have bought an entire capsule of quality items for less money. But the worst thing - I'm still feeling burn out. Like you demonstrated, burn out doesn't come from the amount we own, but rather the mindset we have about constantly needing to wear something different and new.

    Thanks for the tips and encouragement Jennifer! I find that planning for the next season is a great way to get through the discontented feelings. But I really like that you talk about learning to rest in our discontentment. So refreshing in our culture of instant gratification! 🤗💛

    Your videos have inspired me to read books (Madame Chic Series/Mapp and Lucia/No 1 Female Detective Agency), listen to music, wear my apron and wear my good clothes (even around the house). I am inspired by your message and I look forward to trying the 10 core items wardrobe! Thank you. I needed to hear your message. I'm so glad to have found your channel.

    Thank you Jennifer for another dose of inspiration! I'm a long time viewer (and first time commenter) from the east coast of Canada. My ten(ish)-item wardrobe is always a work in progress as I learn more about what flatters me and what doesn't. When I first read Lessons from Madame Chic (I say first because I like to re-read it every year!) I developed an appreciation for colour choices. When I learned that I look best in cool tones I went through my wardrobe and got rid of anything orange, yellow, brown, tomato red, etc. - and this year my wardrobe is shifting yet again as I develop a better understanding of what flatters my inverted triangle shape. I've learned so much from your channel and I appreciate the tremendous effort that goes into creating this content for us. You've helped me embrace my femininity and become a frequent dress-wearer. Many thanks!

    Thank you, Jennifer. Many of these really resonated with me. I would also add, from experience, sometimes, the feeling of burnout or the "itch" to shop is rooted in the media or people we are influenced by. Especially in the early stages of a capsule wardrobe, I had to be very disciplined about not exposing myself to media that triggered me to want more and more. I had to do the hard work of asking myself where the dissatisfaction was coming from and find healthier outlets and influences to combat boredom, envy, or self-esteem. Because, really, if I was content with my closet 2 months ago, why, only 2 months later, are the beautiful items no longer enough?

    I've been working towards a 10 item wardrobe for years but my biggest problem is seeing something I like and thinking I'll never find it again. I'm 5'10 and for me finding a ladylike dress that comes below the knee or longer in a natural fabric like cotton or linen is hard to find. So sometimes I give in and get it even if I know I already have enough. Thanks for the encouragement!

    I love what you said around 2:00 about how you are demonstrating that you can keep the same core items for S-S and F-W, but that isn't necessary. We should all choose for ourselves if we want a smaller or larger wardrobe refresh between seasons based on our needs. Where I live has very large temperature variations so I require a bit more change between seasons. If I lived somewhere with a more temperate climate (as I hope to move to someday) I would like to go even more minimal with my wardrobe.

    Thanks for sharing. You mention "why" and that resonated with me. I have been viewing a lot of financial literacy videos and audio books and one thing that was clearly identified as important to the process of successful decision making is understanding "why" the decision was made initially. "Why do I want to continue doing what I am doing? That mindset brings the attention back to the reason why the sacrifice and commitments are important with a pointed finger toward the "prize" or outcome. It's like a vision board in the mind to act as a reminder as to "why" I am making this decision to better myself in some way. Great advise and thanks for helping me level up one day at a time.

    I had to go on a shopping spree to create a 10 item wardrobe. Having 5 kids in 10 years created a situation where everything was too big or too worn-out/out dated. Or just not age appropriate. I'm not a fan of wearing something made for someone who is in their early 20s in my 30s.

    I hear you & feel you girl, it’s not written in stone, right ? It’s ok, to pick a few items, to add, each season, “if you want to follow this capsule “ the idea here is too not buy abundance of fast fashion / trendy items, just a few pieces, stick to classic , timeless pieces, maybe add a couple trendy/in style/fast fashion pieces, each season, but don’t go over board, keep the majority/bulk of you wardrobe classic style. YOU CANT-MISS WITH THESE SIMPLE RULES

    I wanted to share what my struggle is. When I look at my closet with good intentions to try the 10 item wardrobe, I get so nervous about getting rid of items of clothes that wouldn't be included in my 10 items but that are in great condition and are versatile. I worry that I will regret getting rid of something or miss it down the road! What if I need it later? Do you have any words of wisdom for me?

    • @minnowx7099
      @minnowx7099 5 років тому +8

      Amy H. Don’t get rid of it. Put it away in a box. If you still dont miss it 3mths or 6mths later then discard it. When you change from season to season you can also shop your closet instead of buying new. Jennifer has ar least two 10 item wardrobes - one in storage one to wear. You could take your current wardrobe and split it into 4 seasonsand see how you go.

    Any tips for those of us who are trying to do this gradually? Like, first get rid of damaged clothes, then things that don’t fit, then things that we don’t like, etc? Any guidelines would be helpful. The idea of dumping out my whole closet to do this over a weekend is daunting and gives me anxiety.

    • @ChiaraFrancioli
      @ChiaraFrancioli 5 років тому

      It's not the case now but 15-20 years ago being a plus sized teen meant "you take whatever fits you and you like it" so I went through a stage of brutal decluttering as a young adult moving out for the first time to a foreign country.
      The first things that went out were the damaged clothes I had burdened my luggage with.
      Then out went the things that wouldn't fit, as I learnt to embrace the present version of myself.
      Then out went the things that didn't make me feel like myself, as I developed the ability to tell them apart.
      Then out went the shopping mistakes I made in this new "choosing for myself" process.
      This was a gradual transformation that took me months, years perhaps, to grow into and it's never really "done".
      Even today when some t-shirt starts getting ratty I still wonder "Would I drag this around if I had to pack? Would I pay to ship this?" If the answer is no, sooner or later... out it goes :)
      There's no need to get rid of everything immediately though.
      You could grab a few bags, label them and put them out of sight for a while, knowing everything's there for you if you need to look back for something. You could fill a bag every week and call it a week :) Or a bag every month and call it a month :)
      Just set a pace that feels comfortable and safe fo who you are now.
      Perhaps you might even prefer to wait and experiment with these feelings until the next time you travel.
      What burdens you? What feels like you? What can you happily part with for a week or two?
      Most importantly: how did your sparse vacation wardrobe make you feel? Did you like it? Did it feel freeing? Did it feel like a punishment? You may even find out that you don't like it at all and that you are a maximalist... and that's ok! :)

      @@ChiaraFrancioli Yea, guidelines to accomplish this are helpful for me. I fluctuate between weight/sizes so that is one of my issues when letting things go. Another is that I would like to sell some of my better/new pieces.

      @ChiaraFrancioli 5 років тому +1

      @@21972012145525 I can so relate about the weight fluctuation! ♥
      Currently I handle it like this:
      when I drop a size (or go up a size) I go through my clothes, choose the items I absolutely love, put them washed and folded in a sturdy large paper bag labeled -say - UK size 22 and I store the bag in the back of my very small (1950s small) freestanding wardrobe.
      The remaining clothes I donate, knowing if I go back to size 22 I already own some beautiful things I love at that size :)

    I would love to know how to keep your clothes decent with a small (6 month old) baby. I usually wear presentable clothes, but they get really trashed by my baby between the spit up stains (it always misses the burp cloth!!), and wear and tear of nursing and getting pulled out of shape by the baby! I’ve had to throw away a lot recently, and I’m so hesitant to wear my nicer, more loved clothes, because everything gets so gross! Just wondering what you do!
