You having a $250.00 budget definitely makes you more relatable to me as we are on a very limited budget. I scour thrift shops for good quality items and definitely be very careful with what I spend, this is a choice and financial necessity. Thank you🇦🇺🇦🇺🐨

As someone who feels so much happier when I take care of myself, but has always been on a tight budget, I love when youtubers spread the message of "less is more". You are a shining example to others that it's possible to dress nicely, regardless of clothing budget. Thank you, Jennifer.❤

Thank you for giving us a good, honest example of what it looks like to live within your means. That seems to be a rarity with the fashionistas of UA-cam, particularly the way you focus on quality in conjunction with pricing. You have really helped me to streamline my wardrobe, for which I am most grateful.

When I think of how my home and I looked in a daily basis when my kids were that age, it makes me sad. I see photos and although we were happy, I usually looked sloppy and the backgrounds of all the photos are full of clutter. What I love about your books, blogs, etc. is your message and your intentionality in everything you do. You always inspire me to find my own best “me.” I truly wish you had been writing this all 15 years ago. 😊

My goal for 2018 is to simplify my finances, my clothing..all of it. I'm working on a ten item wardrobe but I'm in the middle of a weight loss journey. I've lost 45 lbs so far so I'm going to start my 10 item wardrobe soon.

    • @MimiNwabuokuMD
      @MimiNwabuokuMD 7 років тому +3

TSP Well done on reclaiming your health! You can absolutely do a 10 item Wardrobe while losing weight. I know, I did it myself in 2010/2011 when I succeeded in bidding nearly 100 pounds goodbye. What I did was to get a combination of wrap dresses, free fitting maxi dresses, a couple of tee shirts and one pair of inexpensive jeans( which I still have hanging in my closet as a trophy 😉). As my body shrunk, everything except the jeans sort of molded themselves to my altering physique. It’s entirely doable, so go for it! And congratulations , because it is almost a given that you will enjoy a freeing from deadweight relationships as you free your physical body from excess weight. I could say more, but this is not my channel and I need to respect that. All the best!

I am doing the same thing. I'd love to be at a point where I don't have to have 3 different sizes in my closet. Good luck to you on the last part of your weight loss journey. I still have 30 pounds to go.

For what it's worth, I never found your shift to be hypocritical at all...in fact, I feel like you have really lived in to the philosophy at a both ends of the spectrum. Funny that you can get criticized for spending too much (in the past) and now for spending too little. So many blogs that talk about capsule wardrobes don't really share how you actually LIVE with it, and having watched you now for years, I feel like I really understand how to live with it! Now I just have to finally do it. Thank you for the continuing great content.

Wonderful wardrobe, Jennifer! I am so sorry that you have received such negative comments about budget wardrobes. I love what you said about knowing what season of life you are in because it is so true. I am In the same situation, and feel the same way about wearing budget items around baby. My baby is always rubbing her face on me and I would much rather savor these moments than be worried about ruining an overly-expensive blouse. P.S. I am loving your filming area/background :)

Your budget wardrobe looks beautiful and classy. Seeing you wear them, I'd never assume they were great deals! They look like very nice pieces. The best quality you can afford is definitely something wonderful to live by and I'm 10,000% about it! Staying on budget too!

I appreciate your openness about having a budget wardrobe. I purchase the majority of my wardrobe second hand including Italian leather boots for $12. It takes effort to shop this way, but even if our income increased dramatically I believe I would still do so.

I said this on the previous video... I admire your ability to bounce back in the face of the crappy comments! Frankly, I don't understand why people get up in arms about other people's clothing. You have ALWAYS said to buy the best that you can afford. And you know what? I don't do that. I shop almost exclusively in thrift store, charity shops, and vintage shops. I buy to fill gaps in my wardrobe, or there are times when I feel the need for a complete wardrobe overall -- and buying second hand allows me to do that without spending too much money. While I could afford to buy, I'm interested in 1) saving money 2) putting my money towards my retirement 3) putting my money towards travel and experiences 4) reducing the environmental impact of new clothing. I don't care what other people do with their money, clothing, etc. I do what works for me and what makes me happy.

  • @angelabrodie2483

Jennifer, quite honestly, it is refreshing to see you purchase items that everyone can afford! You owe no one an apology because you choose to be financially responsible with your budget and don't live up to their "standards" - this is a reflection on them and not on you. Many of us are choosing to adopt this behavior because our priorities are to become debt free, to save for our children's education, or to travel. Quality does not always mean a designer label must be attached to it. As a society we are so focused on brands as part of some sort of identity prestige that we have lost sight of what is truly important. No one will look back on your life and say she was a better person because she was dressed head-to-toe in Armani - and if that is all they have to say that is nice about you, it is a clear indication your priorities were not what they should have been. I love your choices, and more importantly, place a high value on the reason for your choices - well done!

Jennifer, I know it is hard to ignore the negative comments, but please don’ t let them get to you. They just need to open their ears a little more, I heard you say many times “what you can afford”. You are always so diplomatic and wonderful! For that, I will be eternally grateful. I am always appalled at the behavior that hides behind anonymity. What a privilege it is to live in a time when amazing women are willing to share so much knowledge, much of it free of cost to the consumer. So much wisdom in your talk today. Ultimately it is us that has to take care of our responsibilities, and you are correct, there are seasons to our lives (you being a mother of an active young boy+) for those who have watched you for sometime perhaps there was a little disappointment, but they also know the value you possess inside. Your class never disappoints. Sending the best of wishes, hopes and dreams to you and your family.

Hi Jennifer, this video is so uplifting and I never have any budget on buying clothes either for me or my girls (19 and 15). But after watching this, I NEED and WILL put a budget on our clothes. We are in Australia and the city that I live have quite harsh winter. But this year 2018 instead of buying fashion boots I will buy boots that will be able to help me to keep warm, dry and only what I can afford. My girls share our clothes. Most of our clothes are very classic and simple style. Thank you so much for doing these videos. I can not wait for many more to come. Especially on budget.

Hi Jennifer, My husband always says he had a capsule/10 item wardrobe before those terms were invented haha. It's true! He walks into a shop with tons of shirts and pullovers and just knows exactly what he wants/needs (not much) and doesn't get side-tracked. Since I started getting closer to that as well I started shopping for clothes more like he does - once or twice a year, and only for a few specific items that need to be replaced. We went shopping last weekend and left our three year old with my mom - only took the baby with us. My mom thought we were going on a huge shopping spree (because we went to a mall and a few different shops) and that it would take us the whole day. We were actually done very quickly and had time to sit down for quality time coffee and cake later:) When you know your wardrobe and know what you're looking for, it's sooo easy (and fun!) to shop. You don't get that icky feeling of knowing you bought way too many things you don't need. And you don't get home realizing you bought many things that are actually almost identical to stuff you already own. As my husband puts it, after a few years of watching him, "I'm finallly getting it";) And I love it that I can combine the inspiration I get from watching him with the one I get from your channel and books. Much love!

Thanks, Jennifer. I’ve been following your channel for about nine months and I feel so grateful I found you. I never thought I could look truly stylish and comfortable like some women do. I thought it was like a gift you had to be born with 😂. But practicing the ten-item wardrobe and being more intentional with my clothing budget has really helped me. I feel like I’m beginning to know what my style is and that I can have beautiful things that don’t break the bank. Thanks so much for your videos! You are truly an inspiration to me.

Dear Jennifer, as always, you provide an element of grace and composure no matter what the topic. This video does not disappoint. While I am much older and live in a climate where Winter sometimes makes you question your sanity, your guidelines are on mark. I am at a stage in life where budget is not an issue and I sew. This gives me an opportunity to address my wardrobe needs differently but your process helps me to define my needs. I have read all your books, actually I read the first one twice. You are doing a wonderful job of living responsibly and enjoying it as well. Best wishes for the New Year.

I also think it's good for you to model financial responsibility on UA-cam. Hopefully it'll inspire people. Affordable doesn't have to mean cheap! PS I was very impressed with your posture when you sat on the piano bench in the video. I know you've mentioned on the blog that posture is very important to you. Would you do some videos on posture, deportment & manners? I think we all need the reminders. Oh, and when you're planning your SS wardrobe, if you go to Marshalls/TJMaxx again will you take us along? That was such a fun video! I think about it when I'm shopping there to keep myself in check. 😜

I love the green tunic dress on you it is very flattering and I love the simplicity of it. The other thing I love you added this year is the long necklace. It is so beautiful. I remember a time when my children were small, stains became my nemesis. For about eight years as baby after baby went through different stages treating and getting rid of stains became a major chore for me. As one child wiped it's nose on my shirt another was grabbing me with dirty hands on the legs. I don't think I even owned ten items at the time because I was also struggling with my weight and I couldn't find anything that fit. I can sew and that saved me thank goodness.

Hi Jennifer. I want to thank you for introducing me to your concept of a ten item wardrobe! I came across your blog & videos during 2014. At the time I was trying to downsize & minimise belonings & had come across the concept of capsule wardrobes. Only I couldn't grasp how to create a wardrobe from 33 items of clothing. It only stated a number but without any recommendations on how many of what types of clothing. How many should be tops, how many bottoms etc. Your concept was much more helpful. To chose your core pieces, the protagonists of the wardrobe, & then build other peices around them made so much more sense to me! It all sums up to 30-35 peices in total :) so it does end up being a "capsule wardrobe" anyway. But with more guidance & clarity, at least for me! I have recommended & linked your TedX talk & 10-item videos countless times on social media! :-) Thank you for all your books, the blog & videos!

I love dresses too for the same reasons you do. But right now I am especially obsessed with skirts! I am in So Cal too and yes it has been a especially warm winter, but there are occasional cool days. Like the ones we are about to have in the next few days in the 60s. I do regret buying a couple of closed sweaters for this season because I have hardly worn them at all. I bought them because they were cute, and I realize now it was not a wise purchase. This is why the 10 Item Wardrobe can be so effective, to prevent unwise purchases. I think for our weather cardigans are best for when it is warmer in the day and you can take off a layer easily.

I HATE that you got such negativity from your ten item winter wardrobe video! Your core values, including living within your means, are so valuable and so important to this extremely consumer-based culture! I suppose anytime we "swim upstream", not going with the prevailing values, we can expect some backlash. But Jennifer, among those of us who understand the value of "minimalism" in any area, your voice, your encouragement and your courage in speaking out is so very appreciated! You are not alone in the choices you have made, in fact, there are many of us who have gone before and are excited to see another generation finding value in similar choices! We may not be mainstream, but that is all the more reason your voice needs to be heard! I totally understand dreading the backlash, but I am so grateful that you braved the negativity to be a role model and a how-to example for other women who perhaps aren't sure how to make these choices work with budget constraints. Rock on, Jennifer! Thank you for being a gentle voice of reason and encouragment!

Loved the E-course! It really helped me with follow-through on my 10 item wardrobe, instead of just dabbling in it. Totally worth it! Thanks for this video, you are so very poised and pleasant to listen to.

It was nice to see you stood your ground re: your purchasing Zulily clothing against the 'snobbish' remarks/comments set against one of your previous videos. For me, its not about wearing whats in, whats hot, but what I can afford and what makes me feel good wearing it. Kudos to you for staying real to your self and to what matters to you. #tothineownselfbetrue

I loved your video. Classy does not depend on dollars in my humble opinion. A person can spend a lot on clothes but not “look good” because of the way they carry themselves of because of what comes out of their mouth. I appreciate your honesty and admire your dedication to your principles. And I think your style choices are beautiful! Thanks for doing this video.

Hi Jennifer! I just want to say that I was very clear on why you said about buying the best quality that you can afford! Makes total sense. I also recall people criticizing your more expensive pieces. So, go figure out people! Anyway, I truly enjoy your spirit and videos 🤗🤗🤗

Thank you so much for this video. As someone who is on a very strict budget (and trying to pay off a $43k student loan debt on top of L.A. rent, bills, etc. on a single paycheck), I appreciate you making the distinction between "best quality" and "best quality that you can afford." As you said, sometimes we can afford more and sometimes we can't and there's no shame when we can't buy something more expensive.

Late watching, can’t wait for spring! I have a 5 yr old boy and we homeschool as well-I buy shirts at Target bc we make memories and stains lol!! I bought a sweater way out of my price range and got stains first time and couldn’t get them out...so yes-every season of your life means different clothes for you!

Love your budget wardrobe! When the weather turned cold, I filled a gab in my extras with a $13 cardigan from Zulily, and I absolutely love this cozy, well made sweater. So, thank you for introducing me to this online shopping gem. Hoping to see a week of your wardrobe choices.

Well I think you’re awesome! Prayers to you and your family. We live in a society where materialistic mindset dominates ppl lives. I shop at goodwill and trust me I’ve bought some beautiful pieces ( I paid 2.00 for a Chanel silk night gown). Keep true to yourself. Your videos are great!🌸

I’ve also sadly had the washing machine hostage situation once when travelling in the UK actually. Still no idea what happened but after a wash that lasted hours at the highest temperature 😳 my black underwear came out beige!!!!!
Almost home after 4 weeks travelling Europe and Singapore with 1 husband and 3 kids all only with a carry-on case each. Not sure how many items of clothing we each have but it’s a pretty small number and it’s been absolutely fine even for a wide variety of activities (cities, theatre, restaurants, muddy hiking, skiing, swimming, freezing and hot weather...) Loads of people have been shocked that we travelled so lightly but it really was easy and I loved how even my youngest (5) managed her own suitcase when we swapped trains etc. 😊

Thanks for keeping it real about budgeting / adjusting your clothing items to where you are in life. It's great to know that we women are not alone and that we have a great ally like yourself that does the same. No shame should ever be placed on someone on clothing cost , we all have different priorities in life and that is OK. Thanks for your honesty as alway Jennifer!

Thank you for sharing your ideas and lifestyle. We all have to do what is right for us and our family. We have also made a lot of changes in our life to become completely debt free. Our spending has completely changed. We moved into a less expensive home and made additional changes. I love you budget wardrobe. Unfortunately some people will be negative no matter what you do.

Appreciated the talk-through and loved the new gem color pieces you've picked up. I'm in a similar stage with a toddler that is extremely affectionate and can't keep his hands off me. It's a fun stage in life, although my wardrobe suffers. C'est la vie 😊

Soooo, let me see if I understand: people were mad at you for NOT buying $300 dresses this year?! Hmmm. Were any of these deeply offended people going to sponsor your purchases in order to keep up the standard to which they have evidently grown accustomed? *sarcasm* I’d like to avoid being unkind, but I resent the idea of anyone being unkind to you like that. I personally was pleasantly surprised to find that Zulily carried so many quality items for such friendly prices. Thank you so much for your continued presence in the space of gracious living and culture.

Thank you Jennifer for another great 10 item wardrobe video. You look lovely in your pieces and I appreciate you sharing about buying the best you can afford. This is especially helpful for a fellow homeschool Mom who is also on a budget. We love Dave Ramsey and I am so excited to hear more about living well debt free! I am anxious to hear more about your journey and how you apply your madam chic lifestyle while homeschooling and living within your budget. I applaud you and thank you for your honesty and willingness to share.

Jennifer I love your videos. And I have adapted to the 10 item wardrobe. And it has changed my life. And because of the 10 item wardrobe I noticed specific colors I stick with. I do shop on Amazon for knit dresses. My style is bohemian (I took the quiz in your book, but I think I knew that already. The test confirmed it). I love the long renaissance type dresses and maxi dresses which I found on Amazon and I love them. I do look for reputable companies and vendors for service and of course quality. They are inexpensive but durable and stylish. Did you ever do a video on purses and hobo bags? Would you ever? Thank you again for your wonderful videos.

Jennifer, I love your channel! Honestly, I have never been good about caring for myself or dressing well. I've ignored myself and overly focused on my family and education. Everything's been out of balance for such a long time! This year, however, I'm trying to change this. I have a lot of weight to lose, so I've been exercising a lot and eating well. I'd love for you to discuss how to find balance as a homeschooling mom and wife (I homeschool, too). I'd also like you to discuss how to have a minimalist wardrobe as a person transitions into different sizes. I have to lose 10 sizes before I'm the size I should be, so I'm not sure about how to look decent while losing weight and how to maintain my budget through all these changes. I don't want to look messy and frumpy as I lose weight. I really believe that I need to care for myself NOW and not just wait to have an attractive wardrobe until I'm the size I should be. Do you have ideas on how to do this within a relatively strict budget?

I live in Seattle, and I'm so grateful I can buy quality clothes from thrift stores. Lately I focus on quality materials like cotton, so I know they will breath and last a long time.
