I would go with GoPro Hero 9. You will not even need a gimble. Try my Hero 8, the 9 will only be better. Check out ua-cam.com/video/jWVpW9Jalnk/v-deo.html
Hey Mike - thanks for putting this together. I just got into hiking / backpacking in the last couple years and started documenting my outings. Although I upgraded my phone to a Samsung A71 (fantastic shots), the video was if-y - especially with the stabilization. I saw a couple of your videos - looks awesome! Have you upgraded to the 9 or are you waiting for the 10 to come out?
I am still using the GoPro Hero 8. I love it. For my purposes, I do not see a compelling reason to upgrade. I have been very happy with the stabilization and picture. I have even been happy with the built in mic when on the trail with a foam wind muff. I only use the wireless mic when doing tutorials.
@@OutsideChronicles I've seen and read a lot about the GoPro 8/9 crashing and requiring the battery to be pulled as well as the touch screen being unreliable - any further thoughts? I'm weighing this vs the DJI Osmo Action (almost 1/2 the cost)
@@TrilliumHikes The hangs have been a problem with every GoPro model. The 8 is better than my 6, but I do have to occasionally pull the batter out. It is pretty annoying. I have not had an issue with the touch screen.
Hey Mike, I’m a recent subscriber and have really been enjoying your videos and commentary of the ADK (and Katahdin, etc). I have a GoPro Hero 8 but I feel that the battery has a very short life (for example, 45m-1hr). Is this typical for battery life or am I perhaps doing something wrong? I was thrilled to get the GoPro when I did as a gift but I just have a much more reliable time capturing video and pictures using my iPhone. I’d like to switch to the GoPro as I’ve seen you use in your videos but the battery issue is stumping me right now. Is this normal or is something wrong? thanks for this video! Appreciate the tips!
I do not think you are doing anything wrong, an hour at 4K is about right. A couple of things I do to increase life is to shut off wi-fi, dim the screen to 20%, turn off voice and quick capture. I typically film in several 10s clips. I also film at 24fps most of the time. Higher frame rates also affect battery life. I usually can get a long hike like a high peak or my mitchell in one battery, but I always carry two.
I wanted to upgrade my audio which sent me down a rabbit hole trying to figure out the best options for me. I will probably use just the selfie stick and GoPro on most ADK hikes. But will use this setup for ones where I talk more.
Your logic is impeccable. Nice set up. Do all of the GoPros have the feature that digitally removes the selfie stick from the video image? (as in this 360 video: ua-cam.com/video/OER9qbZNLyk/v-deo.html)
The lens is not wide enough to get the selfie stick in frame, unless you have it at a 90 degree. But it does not have that tech, that is a cool thing on the 360 cameras.
I can’t believe the amount of time I invested in researching these options. Hopefully this video saves you some time in deciding on a GoPro VLOG Rig.
Good tips for audio improvements. It applies more to mt biking but we are searching for good Gimble setups as well. Happy Adventuring....

Hahahahah Did you make this vlog because I was asking you questions about gopro setup and color grading and such?? 😂. Great vlog my man!!

Have you tried attaching ND filter to the case? Is it screw/thread type?
Yes, the adaptor for the ND filter snaps on to the case and then accepts any 52mm threaded filter.
@@OutsideChronicles Thanks man. 😊
