The plot became predictable, but the acting was top-notch. Thats why they got the highest rating for the TVN cable channel. KSH and KJW deserve the fame and ratings. I mean, their acting and visuals are everything. ❤

The show was really good in the beginning but as it progressed it became more and more predictable and i felt like it started out really realistic but then suddenly became unrelatable..... especially there was this pattern of them getting progress and her illness being brought back/eun-seong comes up and they are back to square one.... Dont get me wrong this show was still really good but i dont know if it fully deserved the ratings it got and i doubt it would have done well without soo-hyun as the ml.

I agree. To me, it felt very overrated. I love the actors, they had good chemistry too, but the writing is just meh to me. There was potential in the start and then it failed to deliver and the series became pretty average. I still watched it to the end, but I wasn't invested. I think It's Okay to Not Be Okay (for him) and Descendants of the Sun (for her) are much better.

Honestly if it’s not for Soo Hyun and Ji Won, I would’ve dropped it. I cannot believe they put all tropes in one drama (rare disease, car crash, forgotten first love, memory loss, not recognizing your lover, etc). This would’ve been popular in early 2000s but not now.
Also, one thing that disappoints me is the fact that they crossed paths more than once when they were kids. One is okay, two is trying too hard. It almost feels like they are destined to be together. It should be a story about two people choosing to be together despite all the difficulties-not because of destiny. That just ruined it for me.
I wish the leads meet again in other drama-hopefully with far better plot.

    • @ruhi6136
      @ruhi6136 Місяць тому +6

I felt the destiny part was well done in this drama cuz we usually see the couple were actually destined to meet and fall in love... Here it was the same until the divorce came in cuz the angst in the 1st episodes showed how bitter their relationship turned out to be even though it was destiny which brought them together!!! So the message I got was no matter how destiny brings you to the right person how the relationship turns out is in their own hands

The ratings itself proves you wrong that what they did aint popular right now. Remember that the World of the Married has the record and it was crazy sheet as well. I think a good blend of realistic storyline + crazy scenarios is the right recipe.

I think the fourth trope of Korean dramas is not "they are brother and sister" but "they met as children" (but don't recognize each other as adults until later on in the drama) and of course this drama has this trope as well. I'm so sick and tired of this trope by now. Usually it adds nothing to the plot but functions as a proof that they were ment for each other.

    • @baby_bangchannie_adorabled8273

My favorite scene in the drama has to be the epilogue at the end of ep 10 (i think) where the FL hears a drunk ML confess outside her room door that he loves her. That whole sequence of mixed emotions brought instant tears to my eyes. Amazing acting. If not for the acting and the visuals of the drama, I would've dropped it long ago.

It feels anachronistic had the feel of old kdramas with a new spin. I absolutely loved it. Yes things were dragging towards the end and even though the finish left some things to be desired, I also liked it in how melancholy it was. Overall an amazing drama. Oh and the acting brought this to a new dimension. If they were lesser actors it could have gone poorly but Kim Ji Won and Kim Soo Hyun along with supporting cast brought something special to their performances. Really well done.

    • @isabelfortuneteller
      @isabelfortuneteller Місяць тому +5

I agree, even there is a bit of nuance. The chaebols only show their basic decency when they lose all their money. Initially they are almost caricatures, completely out of touch & unable to connect emotionally. They see their children as business assets which is why Hae In keeps her illness a secret from them. Their in-law kids are considered as inferior & shamefully exploited. Whereas the commoner baddies are shown as being capable of redemption, but only one of them takes that chance. But yeah it's problematic that people who were poor or abandoned as children are shown as innately jealous & opportunistic.

I watched this drama because of this review. I'm happy to report that I LOVED it. I was afraid it was going to be depressing - I mean the title alone - Queen of Tears - would be enough to steer me away from it. But it was actually sort of a dark comedy. I was very entertained the whole time. A lot of dramas fall short at the end for me. I wind up fast forwarding a lot, but not with this one. I was never bored. The leads were great but so were the supporting characters. Kim Jung-nan as the crazy aunt,
Hong Beom-ja, especially cracked me up.

The actors made it the sucess it is. Sometimes, it is easy to drop it at the beginning or midway or even towards the end but when the actors are good, you stay til the end. I've only watched short cuts of it until now but it's enough to make me want to watch it. They make it work. Effortlessly.

The main female lead has really good other drama you could check out like fight for my way with park soejun or in a more melo type of drama my liberation notes (especially if you want to see her silent acting as she IS very silent most of the time with some impactful monologue). And I agree that honestly without all the really great actors (really I can't name any bad actor in this drama) this drama wouldn't have been that big and the latter part were a bit too easy at times but that was to be expected from this writer, she NEVER writes realistic I mean she got an alien, a north south Korea romance, miraculous healing from a deathly sickness... But that's why they also work so well, they're pure contemporary fantasy !

I kind of hated that North/South korean romance one. The acting was good at it had good side characters but the ending was terrible. I felt like it was very insulting towards the whole conflict. The resolve for their romance was beyond dumb... they just meet up in Switzerland and date ??? Thank God both characters have hella money and influence that they could do that. She should have just let it be a tragic ending.

this is indeed the first time I have seen your reviews (I only see 10% of my Asian dramas as Chinese, 20% Japanese, 70% Korean) and I am grateful to have spent 31 minutes with you. The only personal observation I might add to your excellent and thorough characterization was that the sheer fear (total intimidation) of the male lead toward his previously happy/married wife indicated an unbelievable degree of shyness and inexperience with her (disrobing etc.), especially sine the real (?) miscarriage is there somewhere, and never explored. Did they have one awkward encounter that failed and nevermore? This left me with a lingering puzzlement throughout my first viewing loop, especially given one theory/preview I stumbled across that might have brought their baby back as having been "adopted" by the slapstick relatives with their little household inside the crazy family. I too suspended all believability concerns for the sake of all the other good things in this production, they just didn't matter. Maybe their add-on two episodes could explore that very dramatic-possibility miscarriage, but it could also have drawn away from the overall happy ending theme.

Came across your video because I watched too many things related to QoT, but thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. I agree on what you said on the parts that you liked about the drama, the other part I liked about the storyline is that the main characters talked openly about death, which I believe is hard to do in East Asian cultures.
I liked that the female lead talked about how she wants to be treated after death, how the male lead should deal with it, and how she initially chose death instead of losing herself (through memory loss). Not many people realize the importance of memory in one's life. So even though EP 14 was a bit long on exploring this subject, I still like the fact that they brought this subject to the surface.
I probably won't come across your videos again because I don't watch a lot of C dramas, prefer K dramas with my time😂 But thanks for this video, great stuff. 🙏

Completely agree with your list of best acting moments but personally would like to add the cathedral scene in Germany and truly what an amazing actress Kim Jiwon is!! Her eye acting is really on another level and I agree everything about the main leads is amazing like they complement each other so well from visuals, acting everything! They immerse me into their roles sm that after an episode ends I come to a realisation that these both are not actually married irl lol

Hearing you talk about the acting in your most favourite scenes instantly gave me goosebumps & a choked up feeling again 🥺 They are enormously impactful & this is why Kdrama can be so compelling: unrelenting melodrama that in the West basically look down upon, combined with superb acting skills. This one really is something special.
Anyone who dropped it towards the end, in my opinion all the craziness gets more than compensated by the ending. The most beautiful & lovely, purely romantic ending I've ever seen 💖

Here comes the weird one who's here without knowing the plot. :D So details take a lot of money, but as far as I know as a viewer, Korean dramas are a team effort. For example for Goblin, one of the actors brought in his own item for a particular scene, and one of the crew members bought an antique chandelier for the drama during their personal travel when she was not in charge of props, she worked in another department. I've never heard about such contributions about Chinese dramas. And I've also had this experience that I'm happy and grateful to be alive to see a certain actor acting. I also feel this way when I read poetry on Instagram. And how funny, that we are not happy to be alive to experience history, and social change, and technological innovations, but we are happy to be alive to experience art. :)

defintely agree with the flat villain characters. i wonder if that is why they tried like every possible plot trope instead, like to make up for what the characters themselves couldn't convey without the chaos.
while hyunwoo was a "perfect" man, i think his self-victimized miscommunication was a pretty significant flaw for me that 'balanced' him out. i don't think he overshadowed haein for me though, personally. i've actually never liked a female character lead more. i just had so much empathy and softness for her, despite her harsh exterior. i think jiwon did such a phenomenal job in conveying this role. like you said, her eyes tell an entire story and more, and that never fails to leave me in awe. i was so impressed by her acting and also their synergy, especially filming so many different scenes and emotions in an order asynchronous from the plot

I aaaaaam so glad you made this review. When I watched the drama, I kept wondering what you would think about this drama.
And you literally represent what I feel about it. If it's not Kim Soohyun and Kim Jiwon, I dont think they would do.
I might be a fan of Kim Soohyun for a long time, but this time I came to watch Kim Jiwon. I saw her previous work My Liberation Notes, and she's so amaziing in that series. Just like what you said, she has that kind of micro-expressions that very subtle yet sooo detailed. Especially her eyes.
I couldnt believe this was written by the same person who wrote My Love from Another Star and Crash Landing on You.
Yoon Seri of CLOY is my favorite female lead ever written on drama. But, I am a bit disappointed at the character development of Hong Hae In. There were time I hope she could save herself more or solve problems without being fortunately saved by Hyun woo. The communication problem between the lead, I think it could be more addressed, especially how they resolved it. It doesn't have to end up with heroic scenes all the time.
And so many cameos.. I don't know but when I saw how cameos keep coming and references to other drama keep coming, I can't help but notice how amazing this team is. To be honest, it sure looks fun to watch but actually it kinda proves how they probably realised that the script wasn't strong enough. So they needed this and that to still hype it. I adore the team.

For me what shocked me was the hospital scene when the male lead was shot and his parents arrived and found the female lead crying. Your son is hurt for the second time for this woman after being in jail for this woman, as a mother to boys my initial reaction will not be to comfort her.
She should comfort the mom for her son going through so much for her. I would find it hard to put my feelings aside and wear her shoes. The world revolves around her feelings because she is important to the male lead but she would not be more important than the son to the mother.

This drama gave me intense feelings. The plot struggled in the last episodes, but it was too late for me to drop it. I was emotionally invested and the actors were amazing, they balanced the crazy subplots with their performances. I am gonna remember Queen Of Tears for a long time.

I just finished this drama of tear ducts on steroids. I kept at it because you spend a lot of time on it in your live session. Had to zip through some of the later episodes. Agree that the ML is exceptional. His intense romantic commitment to the relationship became the touchstone of the whole enterprise. His family were delightful, hers was a dumpster fire that gradually became sanitized. The villains were pretty one-dimentionally evil, but the fence-stradders were more interesting. I'm writing this at abour 5:00 minutes into your review before your state what you didn't like and what you did like just so I'm no so influenced by your opinion but, as always, will appreciate your insights. I'm also thinking of giving up on romantic Kdramas because of just how unrealistic they are given the domestic violence statistic and misogyne that prevails there in the everyday life of women.

Around episodes 7-8 I sort of lost my patience with QoT. Yeah, the actors are really good, but the plot became too unrealistic. So, I just skipped a lot of scenes, but I sort of finished it. Will I rewatch it? No, definitely not. Now, comparing it with Lovely runner, we are currently waiting for episode 9. I watched every minute of every episode and actually rewatched some parts while waiting for the next episode. I keep my fingers crossed for it to actually finish well. We deserve at least one drama that is good from beginning until the end.

I agree with you this should have been longer series in episode cunts. if i speak in american tv series term there are at the very least 3 seasons of 13 episodes: Season 1 ends when the divorce scheme is discovered, season 2 ends with the surgery and loss of memory, season 3 is her gaining back the memories while and deconstructing the fake world that the villain has created around her

I only realized this video is 30+ minutes long after watching half of it, great summary!! I started watching Kdramas about 10 years ago with as my second kdrama, been also an acting fan of Kim Soo Hyun. I do watch other kdramas over the years so I'm familiar with Kim Jiwon, she's a versatile actress, always trying different types of characters, ANDD she almost always have good chemistry with the actor partner, this Kim x Kim couple cast elevates it all. Also could relate your comparison to Cdramas as I have started heavily watching Cdramas since 2017/2018, Cdramas still have a long way to go~ but have to give them credit too that they improved alot over the years.
I agree that everything else was top notch, acting, wardrobe, OST, filmography etc.. everything except the script, it got me disappointed further in the drama. I can accept crazy weird plots, but you have to make it convincing and believable. For example Crash Landing on You, paragliding across a country border and not get caught? Ok, at least they made it believable. For Qos, I am fine if Haein gets unoperatable brain tumor for the sake of the plot, I'm kinda ok with the memory loss I would say, but the whole grandpa's character and his business judgement is just ughh. =.= It is not convincing as such a succesful businessman, you get fooled by just like that? The scriptwriter is pretty good at writing romance, and not really the other storylines outside of romance like the bad guy scenes and also business war. I also wish the scriptwriter made the story more complete, it felt like a rush ending when they tried to fit all the major twists in the last 4 episodes, TBH it was really alot to present and resolve in 4 eps. There were alot of whys and hows nearing the end, which could be done much better.
Thanks for the review, enjoyed it and let's hope KSH would win yet another acting award this year and also coming back on screen with more quality projects. Cheers!

Mostly agree with the analysis except for Male Lead character. The reason we watch romantic genre is to fantasize over how well ML showing affection toward FML (aka Me). Being supportive and patience, never leave your side, protecting you from bad guys, cook for you, drying your hair, taking care of your family, being able to lift you effortlessly (most important), etc. 🥰🤣

How can you not even say anything about tears caused by these TWO KIMS !!!... I was totally immersed in their acting and bawled my eyes out. Then laugh again at their comical/sweet scene. Honestly, I am a fan of Kim JW more than Kim SH as I watched almost all her work before this, and glad she got the recognition she deserves from QoT.

I really want to see AvenueX talk about 浪漫的體質 (be melodramatic), which is a kdrama satire take on melodrama tropes. It's touching/realistic/relatable in the 打工人 struggles sense, and super funny in its way of discussing the kdrama industry.

I mostly agree with the review. I couldn't get into it at first, then started liking it, then towards the end it was a disaster again. Once the amnesia plot started to rear its head, I was out. That kind of plot the laziest writing in the history of dramas, and I am tired of it, unless it is very well done. But until episode 8-10, it was a great drama.

The only reason I dropped Chinese drama is that they dubbed the actress and actor voice. Almost great drama uses the same voice actress or actor. On the other hand, Korean drama uses the real voices of their actor and actress. You can feel their sadness, happiness, or anger through their heavy breathing or tears or giggling or laugh out loud.

I did quite enjoy the 'new take' on the tropes:
    1. Truck of Doom (the ultimate peril) became --> ineffective European low-loader of misery
    2. Unexpected Amnesia (is it being faked in order to outwit the baddies?) became --> pre-agreed amnesia
Watching this I think I cried more than Kim Soo Hyun! I did feel bad for him as it felt like he ran laps around the whole of Frankfurt.
His character was annoyingly perfect at times in the mid to late episodes but could it be explained away by seeing him through the eyes of the FL?

2024, I watched only 2 Korean dramas. Marry my husband and Queen of tears. Story wise I liked MMH more but for the acting, characters (main leads mostly) and the emotional roller-coaster, this drama taken the viewers through, QoT is clearly on top.
Apart from the main leads, I really liked the character Grace, stuck between both sides and trying to good while siding with bad ones, its really interesting to watch her scenes. Also the brother. It took me some time to realise he played patient in Its okay not to be okay.
Not like - Some scenes felt extra.. Also the story development in the last few episodes. And the female antagonist was too flat.

Great analysis and learnt so many Chinese idioms. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one feeling the cringe during the over the top romantic lines being said. And I’m still not very convinced on the motivation for the evil mother character to abandon her son and spend 3 decades being another person to exact her revenge/scheme. But this being a Korean drama, it could afford to get away with those 😅 I was happy with the pacing of the rollercoaster ups and downs though

I am really surprised that that you did not call out among the wrong things this series romanticized or treat very lightly the two following topics: psychological manipulation of woman with a terminal illness aka gas-lighting and it treated miscarriage like it was just trivial issue rather than a traumatic experience that this couple resolve without even really mentioning it!

I recently watched a couple videos discussing male leads in cdramas, especially idol cdramas, tend to be stronger and more prefect as well as actually is/becomes the focus of the story than female leads (regardless of whether a drama advertises itself as a "big female drama"). Although drama viewers are predominantly female, creators believe that viewers are more interested in the male characters, I guess, for fantasizing the perfect mate.
