The paint scheme on this 170 is the coolest one I've ever seen. I've been waiting for you to showcase your 170. Great video. I fly a stock 170A out of a 1000ft grass strip at the local aiport for a banner towing business. We fly it along Rio's beaches at 200-250ft and 55-60mph (no flaps). It flies and behaves so well. I love 170's way too much. :)
"Start with 10 degrees of flaps", I heard that. I converted a '59 172 to tailwheel/180 HP/CS prop/Horton STOL . I did not do the VG's due to snow/ice and wing covers, though I really considered it. In official competition it achieved a measured TO roll of 146 feet in calm air (not a realistic working expectation since it was stripped and had about 30 minutes of fuel onboard). It would fly before airspeed indicated, so timing and feel, with a healthy dose of 'where do I go if it doesn't fly'. And when things are happening quickly bobbing your head down to reach a flap handle is not so good, 10 degrees does put it in easy reach. Technique was to hold forward pressure and when the tail came up so you could see over the nose, put it back down and drop 40 degrees of flaps. I currently have a small pile of 170B that needs to be rebuilt, motivational videos like this are a big help!
This a great video, I love your stuff. The single engine 4 place 2400 pound gross weight aircraft with upgraded engines by far make the best backcountry plane. Short, light, and capable! This is the type of flying people need to see if we want to keep GA alive. Fun, challenging, and adventurous. GA Flying is no longer a viable source of travel but the way to get places you can’t get with a car. Thank you for showing people what can be done with a private plane.
I’m an older, still student pilot and I own half of a Decathlon I can’t solo in (insurance- thankfully, my CFI owns the other half!). I split some of my flying time between my partner’s Cessna 152 and the Decathlon. The Decathlon is a bit intimidating but I enjoy the challenge. One point you made in the video that was very valuable for anyone thinking about buying an airplane is asking, “What’s the mission?” The Decathlon is a very capable airplane for teaching tailwheel transition, spin training and introductory aerobatics. I would never consider it for back country flying due to lack of flaps. It is a fantastic airplane for teaching slips though, since every landing is a “no flap” landing!
My dad’s employer back in the 1970’s had a 170 on wheels and skis. He used it for his oilfield business in Northern Alberta. He then got a 180 as well. He had slightly larger wheels, but only because he had a grass strip of his own.
I've flown several 170 cessna airplanes and I've owned 2 of them a 1952 170B and a 1954 C model both with 145 hp continental the stock 145 motor is pretty taxed at high altitude and the payload is not huge but the 170 cessna remains a staple in the back country for good reason and will for the future because of the 170s ease of operation and the cabin is open enough for a fair amount of cargo
The Cessna 180 is the best high wing aircraft out there. As a Cropduster they are amazing and don't mind hard WORK. The BIG ISSUE WITH WORKING A LOADING AIRCRAFT IS you have to keep THE AIRCRAFT balanced. Balanced TURNS ARE VITAL FOR SURVIVAL.RETIRED CPL (still learning!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to come out and fly the 170 with the spring landing gear struts and Airtex interior looking good and the 180 constant speed prop and the Vgs makes slower flights and I do have a lot of Tailwheel hours:
Love your videos. so many people have inane, horrible music, but yours embellishes rather than annoys. Great choice. Wonder when the first engine upgrade was stuffed into the 170? Was it always the O-360 or was a Lycoming O-320 ever tried? With a 160HP STC would it help over the stock 6 banger? Anyway, dream plane for sure.
it use to be... now they have jumped in to 180+ price points... so PA-22/20 is back to being king if you want to carry more than a tooth brush like a 140
I’ve been wanting to fly one of these for a while. Great video, your footage is great, along with your narration make a very informative and interesting video. Sorry to see the video showing your 182, will you going to show us the progress?
I could never quite work out why most STOL and bush planes are taildraggers. Surely tricycle gear is better for stopping, cause you don't have to worry about flipping over.
Yes trike is better for stopping, problems are prop clearance and the weak nose wheel, still they can be super capable, specially for backcountry strips they work better, for off airport the tailwheel plane is more capable.
@Cristi Neagu Tailwheel airplanes will stop fairly quickly in soft field conditions due to the fact that the center of gravity is aft of the main gear (the same condition that makes tailwheel airplanes more susceptible to ground loops). A tailwheel airplane flipping over upon landing is most likely caused by unnecessarily excessive brake application. Hope that helps.
Not sure how you were loaded during the shot of the tail wheel, but looks like the spring is worn out/flat. Either way, I’d expect you’re seeing some tail wheel shimmy. Congrats on the new bird and thanks for the videos.
Generally you want the caster built in to the yoke to be the only caster. The platform the yoke attaches to should be about level at normal loads. You just have to deal with shimmy when you load outside the set up. Yes, pavement makes it much more prominent. Usually x-cty when I have to land at unknown fuel stops and can’t land grass with aft CG. Through normally I was taught to pin the tail during all taxi ops, Ive found you can “fly” some weight off the t/w to get it to calm down. You practice enough that you may have already done this instinctively. The spring just appeared to be sagging a fair amount in the close up, could just be the camera angle. Keep up the great work!
I have never flown the 170. I am sure it's a great back country plane. However, I believe the 182 is just as good in back country getting, out of the tight spot. Even, without the Stol kit. Depends on pilots skills.
@@motoadveBackcountry182 yeah I saw that it was being repaired. Between watching your videos and going to a back country school… I’ve gained a lot of confidence.

I started flying my Dad's C 170 with STOL tips when I was 13 back in the 70's. Still my favorite!

You are such a competent and smooth pilot. Looks like you’ve been flying her for years.
Nice 170. Very docile and forgiving taildragger.
Best airplane videos in UA-cam at all !! Congratulations and greetings from Brazil
Beautiful 170, scenery, and piloting skills. Excellent video. Thank you
Unique bird; congratulations on the new acquisition. Safe flights, we are tuned in for other great videos.

Why do you insert such a stupid off topic commentary about yourself on another person's post?
What do you mean you can't solo in a plane you own??

I learned to fly on my dads C170 (metal wing). I love the tail, it’s shape will always look good.
excellent video, my uncle had a 1949 170a that was fun to ride in, hope the 182 gets repaired, like the airplane..
What I've been waiting for! Awesome! Looking forward to more 170 videos...
I really love watching you fly. Thanks for the great videos. Inspirational.

Awesome! Thank you!
You have a beautiful plane enjoy yourself looking forward to your next video comparing the 170 to 182
Keep with the practicing

Very impressive how all these modification improve the performance of an already well designed plane!

I have suscribed immediately. So much fun! I am not a pilot but I'd love to.

Great movie, great plane, thank you :)!
Great video. Great flying. Great airplane.
Personal piece of advice: Replace your fasteners on your instrument panel with Torx. Much less likely to strip out.

@@TenMinuteTrips Well put, plus tailwheel planes are lighter, so that helps stopping quicker.

We had 70 pounds in the cargo area, I feel shimmy on pavement sometimes, not always, but will check the spring, thanks.

Very cool
Hi Larry, love the 170. great walk though. do you have any time in a carbon cub? would be great to see your comparison to the 170.
Only 1 hr on Carbon Cub,that thing will out perform any airplane, its like a dirt bike with wings.
@@motoadveBackcountry182 and those wings come with a price. :-)

182 is a great airplane, I will chose it for backcountry strips over the 170, and for off airport the 170 would be my choice.
Verdaderamente hermoso !!!
Nice video like it
Lindo 170 quql o motor voc esta usando no 170
Larry is this a new bird for your collection? Will we see the 182 again? I love your videos man.
Bought it in December, still have the 182, is being repaired.

Yes I own it.

What was the extent of the damage to the 182, will I be able to repair and return it to flying?

What happened with the old plane? The orange one.. 182?
