  • Got to fly the most highly modified Cessna, Experimental 170B, amazing performance, STOL and probably its one of the safest airplanes in the world. Did this at Bush Air Advanced Backcountry, Mountain, STOL and Tailwheel training, with Milne CC Pocock, truly an amazing experience.

Larry I don’t normally comment. I think it’s important to comment as a fellow aviator. I have a little 1500’ grass strip in TN. I have watched every one of your videos multiple times. I was told my little 172 with the O-300 can’t do anything like this. After watching all of your videos, you commented for me to “ go get training”. I did. I went to CC’s 2 years ago. I took his class. I came home and immediately felt safer. Since, big tires and prop. And a Stol cuff. Certainly I am not at your level or CC’s, but my message is that this is achievable to anybody who wants to learn it. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t have a $300K Carbon Cub. Average aviators with older planes and good training can absolutely live their dream. Your videos inspired me, CC made it a reality. I hope I can meet you and thank you for making your videos to inspire people like myself.

Yes Mopar living dreams means modifying what U can where ya can and a plane with a good pilot is just like a car it can do unexpected nonconventional things. It's the pilot & that guy that modifies it. Other wise we wouldn't have stock cars above of all the once home made inventions R Modified Stock Cars. Mostly a modified stock car is something totally hand made heavily modified so that the average boob couldn't do anything with it because of intimidation. I knocked a pesky Grizzly bear right off a mountain cliff with a Cessna 120 that I never flew before. It was highly modified and very agile in the air. When U clobber say a roughly 1,200lb static object with the landing strut of your buddies airplane with him eggin ya on ya better know what U are doing. More over that U better have trust in nearly a century old airframe that can do nonconventional things. I'll take my American or that 120 up against anything made even today. its the guy that modifies em to do things other planes can't do. I spent a better part of 13 years modifying my American. I went out over the gulf of Mexico inverted directly from take off. No problemo except the broad in the seat next to me screaming her head off.

Beyond impressive. I have logged truck loads of hours in this same model, and am blown away by what you are demonstrating this modification has done to this otherwise gentle and comfortably economical four place family airplane. Congratulations to the geniuses behind this project!

How much mods are needed to just make it into a basic bush plane with the bigger wheels and landing gear to go with it? Would that be a lot of work also? Im not sure what the original aircraft would look like i cant find what it looked like..

Amazing modifications and so many modifications on one plane. The results are unbelievable at 24 knots before stall. This was a great video subject and CC is an amazing person, pilot and fabricator/builder. I appreciate you Larry and your channel. Best of luck in the future.

Did a lot of training on a 170-B during A&P School.., so basic & simple you have no extra anything on this a/c. That means direct flight controls, no hydraulics, very basic instruments & radios. This all means greater useful load of course, so there’s you’re benefit in w/b &really what G/A is all about! Thanks Phil Siechen!

Enjoyed this video as I do all of your videos. Was very happy to see the True Tac II mounted on the dash. I have one mounted like that in my Cherokee right next to the small slip indicator you had recommended in one of your other videos. Except in low light conditions where is it doesn't work well, it is so nice to have the RPM right in my line of sight. Piper sticks the stock, old bouncy analog one far too low on the panel.

You guys are right at the edge of stall and top darn low for that. How can you be sure your airspeed is sufficient , instruments are not exact. I guess what I am asking is if you sense a stall incoming, can you feel it fast enough at say 100 feet to save yourself? If the nose goes down you are going to need a lot more room to recover, it just seems scary to me.

Risk homeostasis -- that extra safety margin was used up flying riskier flights, so the overall safety was not improved. Not a criticism, just an observation.

The Cessna 170 will never be anything but a Cessna 170, as more than half of them succumbed to groundloops. Add an army-style tail wheel lock, and it stands a chance for gusty day landings. The camber lift leading edge add-on is draggy and blunt. Huge wheels are an invite for a flat tire wipeout. The original six cylinder Continental is elegant.

The Wren 460 by Robertson was, perhaps the highest modified Cessna for STOL. No slats, however. But Wren's teeth, drooping double slotted ailerons, double slotted flaps, a canard, etc. Too costly. Yet 25 mph minimum speed advertised. I flew in one, It was based on

I mean modify any of the 100 series Cessna ya know 120 to 172 even bigger planes add balloon tires even wider gear and ya got a friggin Draco now come on. I mean where do ya think the Draco concept came from for cripes sakes... This is like listening to little adult kids than can't afford a Draco so they soup up their Cessna and modify it... Sheesh.. The first time I saw a Draco in Portland I thought it was a modified Cessna. I just recently saw a 170 with bigger tires and friggin Chevy Vortek engine with a turbo. I mean talk about a little tiny toy with some real punch. I just saw what they told me is a Swavea it was called. Looks exactly like a Cessna. Its made Checz republic. There are so many clones of the little early model Cessna's I can't keep track.
