The story goes that a planned music video for this song was made using footage of The Sorels performing it in " Streets of Fire", and it used this version sung by lead singer Winston Ford. When Dan Hartman got wind of this, he put a stop to it, as his contract stipulated that any version released commercially or for promotional purposes had to have his voice on it. Hartman recorded a new vocal for the video that replaced the one recorded by Winston Ford. A new video with Hartman lip-syncing was later made for the song.
I've always adored this song, and never realised that it was written for a film until recently. Rest in peace, Dan Hartman, thanks for giving us a classic bop!
I believe the album released about a year before the movie to minor success. The director liked the song and fit the movie so it was added to the soundtrack.
Originally Hartman states he wrote it for Hall & Oates! But their album was already finished and had no room for an additional song. So he released it himself! And thank God for that! What a classic!
Me too. And looking back on Stoney Jackson, Robert Townsend and Mykelti Williams...and the Jeffrey Hornaday moves...loving this kind of nostalgia and anachronism in this movie.
This is not just a great vocal performance, of a great song, 'The Sorels' in Streets of Fire were tighter than a corset with two people pulling on it. This is a movie that deserves resurrection.
"There's one thing we both know, Fish. She needs you a lot more than she needs me." "She needs me but she loves you." And some people said the scriptwriting was terrible. That exchange cuts pretty deep.
Despite this movie having quite a few flaws, I have to give the creative team kudos for avoiding common tropes. Not only does the guy not get the girl comma, but the girl does not get the guy she wants. The realization that they are not right for each other and how the 2 guys respectfully see eye to eye are well grounded. The platonic relationship between him and his best friend, who happens to be a woman, felt very realistic. A Quasi sequel would be interesting to see.

Good on Dan Hartman for insisting they use his voice for all releases outside of the movie as stipulated in his contract. Although Winston Ford's voice is equally amazing, Dan put his heart and soul into this song. He has been making music since his teens, and success and recognition only came through this song years later.
I just learnt this; Winston Ford sang the version in the movie but Dan Hartman's version is on the soundtrack CD. Winston Ford's version is on parr with Dan Hartman's.
Ellem: You're just going to cut, ah! Tom: Yeah, you know me. Ellem: Yeah, I know you're the guy with the right hook. Tom: .... Ellem: Is that it. Is that all you have left to say? Cody: Look, I know you're going to be going places with your singing and stuff.. and... I'm not the kind of guy to be carrying guitars around for you... but if you need me for something.. I'll be there. Street of Fire!
1984 was such an amazing year for movies with great music. This, Purple Rain, Stop Making Sense, Footloose, This Is Spinal Tap, Beverly Hills Cop, Ghostbusters, the scores for Temple of Doom and Dune. So much great stuff. And movies didn't have to be good to be *great* . They just needed to ooze atmosphere, have great looking production design, several scene stealing cameos and supporting performances, and a kickass soundtrack.
@@martinkurtz9269 For sure. The main theme is brilliant, and I recall them using Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight quite a bit, which reminds me of another film I overlooked (although I've yet to actually see it), Against All Odds, which has a brilliant Phil Collins title track.
I always connected this song with, Nights Like This from the movie the 5 Heartbeats. The sublime connection perhaps being Robert Townsend being in both bands.
Not that I'm aware of officially released. However, Oxygene 80 does have a You Tube video showing only the concert scene sung by Ford . Dan Hartman's stipulated in his contract that any version released commercially or for promotional purposes had to have his voice on it.
Just as an aside, but it's kind of crazy Diane Lane was literally only 18-19 in this movie, considering she seems very mature for her age in this movie.

Stoney Jackson had everybody thinking he was really singing this song 👏🏻 Now thats true talent ❤😍
Dan Hartman had everyone thinking Stoney Jackson was signing that song, lol.

What a shame. Winston's vocals were superior.
@@mach6893wish there was a versión just mr Ford singing
@@mach6893 For this particular song I would have to agree. However, I do love both versions.

Good for the late, great Dan Hartman. As the songwriter of this song, he deserved the recognition as a talented performer in his own right as well.

Dan Hartman was such a amazing singer and song writer too. RIP Dan 🙏🕊️🙏🕊️🙏

Best fake band.
Anytime I hear this song.I always think about this movie
Such an amazing movie. It baffles me why it wasn't a big hit. I would've loved to see Cody and McCoy go on more missions.

RIP Winston Ford. He tragically passed away in an auto accident in 2007 at the age of 55.

I LOVE THIS SONGS A LOT ( ESPECIALLY THE MOVIE )
Don’t think it would’ve been the hit it was without this film clip though. Cracking ‘band’ clip
And to think Dan wrote this song for Hall and Oates. I love this song, and this movie, and a young Diane Lane looked like a goddess.
This song was originally written for Hall and Oates. They passed on it, so Dan decided recorded it himself.
I really need to see this film...

I never realized Robert Townsend was one of the back up singers. I wonder if this inspired him to write the 5 heartbeats
Now this was real music.

Movie version, lead vocal by Winston Ford.
The version on the cd soundtrack is lead vocal by dan hartman.

Staqe presence with the Sorels performing definitely excelled in the area of choreography.

Who is actually singing this version?
Winston Ford is singing on this one.
Who knew that Wayne zolinski was thier manager
Who's singing this version: Dan Hartman or the actor?
Not even the actor. It was Winston Ford.
I wish I could hear this without the dialog and applause.
Tbis whole time i rhought this song was by a white person
It is: Dan Hartman. He wrote it, also.
This is an annoying earworm!
The male character in the movie sounds a lot like Rocky. ADRIAN!!!!!!!! oh yeah wrong movie.
It was supposed to be Tom Cruise, but he was unavailable. Cruise was already a proven chemistry for Lane from the Outsiders.
