Baldur's Gate Level 5 Arcane / Mage Magic Spell Guide

  • Опубліковано 25 лип 2024
  • This is the fifth installment of my arcane magic spell guide for the classic PC game, Baldur's Gate.
    This video covers Level 5 (FIVE) mage spells. A level with some very strong and versatile spells (with some hard to remember details), the first good summons in the Arcane book, and also some joke spells that are fun to laugh at!
    The Level 1 spells video is here: • Baldur's Gate Level 1 ...
    The Level 2 spells video is here: • Baldur's Gate Level 2 ...
    The Level 3 spells video is here: • Baldur's Gate Level 3 ...
    The Level 4 spells video is here: • Baldur's Gate Level 4 ...
    This series will take an analytical / rule / power game oriented approach to discussing the strengths and weaknesses, and use cases, for each spell in Baldur's Gate, BG2:SOA, and TOB. The spells are assessed across the entire saga and mainly using the unmodded Enhanced Edition releases (so no SCS, although I do touch on SCS frequently)

    Animate Dead can be used to clear the beholder dungeons with ease. Beholders can easily decimate your party, but then again, both beholder dungeons are optional.

    Love this breakdown.
    Aside from Davaeorn there aren't good reliable spell guides and its great to get a second well informed perspective.
    My favourite spell is Project Image (7).
    Imo the best spell in the game, and it makes lvl 4 wizard eye a real game changer.
    Interested to hear your thoughts on the spell when you get to it.

    I played the Baldur's Gate series since my early youth (I'm 38 right now) and never really understood the magic system. There are so many spells but I never really used any crowd control or protection spells. My magical companions always stood in the background shooting damage spells. When I was fighting against enemy spellcasters I always needed a lot of saves and reloads. I succeeded by cheesy stuff like changing inside outside the location and let the enemies waste their spells without hitting me.
    I am looking forward to playing more seriously and use the spell/antispell game mechanics

    IIRC you are right about Oracle being leftover. I believe in the original game level 2 Detect Invisibility would partially "reveal" the location of Improved Invisible/Shadow Doored enemies, but it would not actually dispel the invisibility, making Oracle and True Seeing necessary if you wanted to target them with single-target spells. Wish I could confirm it but those discs are long gone. I think there was even a load screen tip that advertised this mechanic.

    One important caveat to your description of Spell Immunity is that it no longer affects Breach in the latest version (v35) of SCS. I don’t think a lot of players have realized this yet and Davaeorn and other streamers are still using v34 so they haven’t seen it either. If you look at the very long list of changes in v35 in the G3 announcement post, there is this bullet that describes the change to Spell Immunity: “Breach now bypasses spell immunity by being effectively level 10 (on reflection the mismatch with Spell Turning isn't as bad as the alternatives).”

    - I would use arcane animate skeleton if solo, but with clerics in the party and a summon cap, they're usually doing it. Good spell, but in most cases divine magic needs to be higher level to be comparable to arcane rather than lower. Skeletons as one of the exceptions tends to make this almost always the cleric's job. A job the cleric does a lot.
    - Sell + buy or steal wand will recharge it, including breach wands. Once you pick up a couple wands, it's rare you'd run out before you could recharge.
    - Chaos is better when cast by summons than your mage. Particularly relevant for Hexxat, whose children of the night can cast it in addition to making summons themselves. One chaos cast in a round by an actual party member isn't great. 4 of them cast by a summon is pretty useful, for similar reason to nymphs spamming confusion.
    - As far as I can tell, all of the cloud/AoE over time spells self-stack, so blasting out 5 cloudkills + 8 webs + other AoE can clear impressively sized groups of enemies. Under improved alacrity, this type of stuff can be made instant with vecna/power, so there's a case for using this setup in some areas/encounters rather than just using horrid wilting. Before HLA, you can also just spam out a bunch of webs (doesn't aggro), then have casters put up copies of these using spells/wands and clear stuff that's trapped.
    - Divine fire elementals are actually pretty good. Arcane elementals might as well not exist/pure scribe XP fodder at best.
    - Death fog is acid, so you can cast prot from acid if you want to walk through that I guess.-

    • @WJ_24
      @WJ_24  Рік тому

      Valid points I think on all. I didn’t mention the summons cap but I probably should have since yeah it does impact whether you take this in arcane book. Good point.

(also, are you planing on doing this with cleric spells? that would be sweet).

    • @WJ_24
      @WJ_24  Рік тому

      Awesome! Drag disciple is really fun and with sorcerer solo is very powerful because you can access spells before you can find the scrolls. You get wish so much earlier, for example. Also, dragon disciple can make a pretty good fighter with stone skins, imp haste, and the better HP and AC, plus you can get to over 100% fire resistance pretty early and make your enemies all right in an inferno of incendiary clouds and fireballs. Those spells are not as good as magic damage spells but when you have massive innate fire resistance it is hard to pass up!!!
      I don’t know about divine, one thing at a time… I am working on level 6 arcane now though.

    Awesome video! I'm going to do a Dragon Disciple run. I've typically played mages who don't have to worry about picking bad spells (since they can always memorize different spells). If you had to pick your spells, as six of them are quite good, which do you choose? I figure Breach, Spell Immunity, and Spell Shield are no-brainers. Should I round level 5 out with Lower Resistance, Animate Dead, or Sunfire? Thoroughly enjoying the Arcane spell guides series so far. Looking forward to sixth level spells!

    • @WJ_24
      @WJ_24  Рік тому +1

      Thanks man!! For a dragon disciple, it would be really hard not to take Sunfire, it just feels like it fits the theme of the character! Plus, it’s the best of these other spells. I always take it on sorceror. I would skip lower resistance and take pierce magic at 6 instead, also something to think about is animate dead is stronger than all these right when you get level 5 so you might want to start there. As time passes it becomes less powerful but damn those skeletons are good right when you get them, especially if you have no clerics to cast them.

  • @LightWavess
    @LightWavess Рік тому

    Pretty late response about Shadow Door but the reason i am usually end up taking two of these is because i care too much for lvl 4 spells (stoneskins) and i usually never end up using improved invisibility for that very reason aaand potions of invisibility are usually reversed for my thief (and those disappear in seconds believe me), then again i always have a backup mage in my team and my main is most of the time a fighter/mage and i just don't care about lvl 5 spells (Except for spell imunity, shield or one sunfire)
    Chaos, Cloudkill, Animated death i reserve for pure mage or sorc.
    And yea even though Improved invisibility is better i just never end up using it because of its cast time of 4 where with cast time of 2 i can reapply it almost instantly with amulet of power.
    Still it's a tier 5 spell and it's not anything amazing but i glad it's there so i don't have to wait so long to apply improved invis

      @@WJ_24 Thx for doing these Vids :)
      A Few additions, if you dont mind:
      "Magic Resistance" from a cleric/druid maxes out at (setting the res to) 40%, not 50%, once the Cleric/Druid reaches Level 20. A neat trick you can do - either with Vaihlor's helm or being a Cleric/Mage Multi class (or bring Aerie): Cast simularcum to artificially lower your level, which then results in lower amount of set MR. Druids are also stuck forever @ sub 20 levels, especially if you're a Fighter/Druid (or bring Jaheira).
      Also this spell can be cast from stealth/sanctuary, without breaking the invis, while also not turning the enemy hostile → a really underused mechanic, imo. Done right you can set enemies MR to 20-25% for a really long even in the later chapters (and then lower it again with LR)
      Animate Dead: Similar to Remove Magic this is not just a bit better, but much better on a Bard, considering a bard reaches Level 15 so early (1.1mio xp) and has access to two or three level 5 spells at that moment. They also deserve an extra point for being awesome against Beholders.
      Chaos: Not sure, if this is in the base game or whether Tweak Pack/SCS does that: the Scroll shop in Baldur's Gate City sells a stack 20x of this spell. This is of course a spectacular spell in the 2nd half of BG1 and is one of the few ways, to reliably do the ducal palace on a no-reload solo run (other than really cheey stuff like: Invis the 2 dukes from stealth, without initiating the dialogue, then dropping a couple of Webs in the room, before starting ther fight).
      Elemental Resistance Spells: Yeah, they are pretty lackluster overall, given how rarely Lightning and Acid are used, and a single Lightning Strike can be handled with lower Tier spells like Minor Spell Deflection (sic!).
      They become somewhat decent though, if you wanna use these Elements heavily yourself. Lightning Strike is an extremely powerful AoE spell in tight corridors, noone uses because it's so risky. But if there's one thing I learned from playing an Avenger Druid, it's killing things with lightning while having 117 Res can carry thru a lot of content.
      For Acid it's Death Fog (Tier 6) which does OKish ground damage but more importantly kills summons like "Death Spell" while beeing available to Illusionists / Jan.
      Notable enemies that use Acid: dragon in Umar Hills, Draconis and Dragon in the elven city. It might also help against SCS-mages using Improved Alacrity with a bunch of Chromatic Orbs:
      Cloud Kill: The Wand makes memorizing the spell itself really obsolete, but the effect of the spell is pretty solid nontheless. If you do the Rakshasa quest in Trademeet early (what I like to do anyways) you'll find a Amulet that makes immune to all Poison, can be swapped in and out quickly even mid fight and gives potentially 3 party members the ability to stay/tank/fight in that cloud: wearer of Amulet, Ring of Gaxx and a level 15+ Druid (if there's one). This also synergizes pretty well with Animate Dead summons.
      Actually there's little reason, to not use this Wand at every fight till late tob, if you can afford it.
      Thanks again for another educative and inspiring video :)

    Since this video is pretty fresh I'd like to ask you a question.
    I've recently installed SCS and I've made a party of 4 (because i hate managing 6 people) and one of them is my dragon discipline as my only mage and only now late in the bg1 i realize how kinda underwhelming is not having another wizard casting spell thrust, remove magic, secret word and enemy mages just doing whatever they want because i can't really hit them through stoneskin before they chaos my party
    (The 3 daughters of Shandalar and that red wizard in thiefs guild made me realize i REALLY need a way of breaking through their defences)
    So now i need to ask this question if i should invest in secret word, spell thrust or remove magic to dispell mages or should i "endure" and rely on scrolls through siege of dragonspear to deal with mages?
    (And if i should invest in vocalize while we're at it because I've noticed clerics love to silence my sorc alot)

    • @WJ_24
      @WJ_24  Рік тому

      You definitely need at least one strategy to debuff enemy mages, and scrolls doesn’t really work since scrolls don’t cast at caster level (depending on mods), you have a limited number of the key debuffs, and you can’t cast a scroll thru alacrity.
      I think you should definitely take one of breach or remove magic, probably both, and also you should take at least one or spell thrust, ruby ray, and pierce magic.
      Also, I would not take vocalize as amulet of power is what you should be wearing and it has innate vocalize. You can also use a vocalize scroll if you need. Silence is not that commonly used and you get a save.

    Good video (all parts are actually good). Solid.
    However, imho (!):
    1. you generally doing bad thing: you often say how to play right. Yep, is legit, but you prefer nuke all of them. Is a stupid way how to play, and you teach everyone what they should nuke them all. Bad thing. You trying/offer spell explaining, but instead you say how to play right. And play right in stupid way! Nothing. NOTHING CAN BE WORSE than nuke them all from wand. Grab your weapon and slash them all. Is a true path of hero. ;) (You should recognize bit of irony here)
    2. And often you mix but not enough or not deep enough in environment: e.g. basic game or scs (you make random points but they are too random to be relevant). SCS without SR+IR or SRR+IRR is nonsense. Stick to environment. In SCS most of your points or too deep explaining is have no sense, just because they are done in other way.
    3. Stop describe same thing 3x times in a row. (!) You explain spell. Explain spell well. And then often go to summary and you explain again and again same.
    (2) SCS+SR/IR+no potions+no wands rule+only multiclasses in party+no deaths (at least no ressurections from temples) - is how fun play to me. In this restrictions spells looks very differently.
    I'm don't saying what you doing wrong, but you can do same better and videos will be shorter by 10-30% i guess without listening same info 3x. Why 3x? Almost for every spell you explain 3 times. Yup.
