  • Hey everyone, a bit of a different video here where I just go through character creation and the first hour of gameplay and how I try to most efficiently (and with least risk of dying!) get XP and other resources up in early BG1.
    This was fun to make and thanks for watching!

    Always good to see another upload on this channel, and it's a weird coincidence that you started this new series at the same time I started watching a similar 'Completionist SCS' playthrough by @Mivsan_NT (from nearly 6 years ago).

    nice, some fresh content on your channel - like to see that :)
    Since you seem to enjoy Cleric/Mages, this might be an interesting choice: Dual class Priest of Helm (9) to Mage. Keep in mind though that you can only Dual in SoA, since you need 225K xp to reach level 9. Clerics are pretty good soloers for BG I anyways, so it's not much of a problem if you make sure that you get a Wand of the Heavens early - Ulgoth Beard has one (vendor iirc. - or was it killing the Dwarf?)
    So what do you get: Cleric benefits as a Mage as you've stated already.
    Can be Lawful Evil
    2 free (and incredibly early!) uses of True Sight (and a +4 enchanted Weapon, fwiw).
    Access to level 5 spells: Probably the most important level for that class combination, since you can give yourself Chaotic Command, use a low-level Magic Resistance to reduce high MR enemies later on (and it stays low, which is good) and Righteous Magic, which helps when magic use doesnt help ;)
    With the 3 Wis Tomes and Lum's Machine you get 2 additional level 5 spells.
    I had a blast soloing this char thru the saga! Takes the top 3 or 4 place of all time for me ^^
    Btw: You don't have to go to the Firewine Dungeon to get a Cloud Kill scroll. There's an easily accessible Scroll in a hidden place on the map where you bring the dog to the disguised demon / Sendai & her crew awaits you. It should be the map 2 to the East of Gnoll's Fortress

      the only bad thing though is: It's really hard to roll, since you need 15 Int and don't get particularly good rolls as a Helm.
      Another addition: To save some money early or not postponing the memorization of spells artificially long: @ the carnival you can buy 2 potions (red and violet). the violet one raises your Int to 25 for 24 hours and only costs 50 Gold. Note however: It also reduces your strength to 3, most certainly leaving you behind encumbered. So make sure to only use this in an area where you can rest without being challenged (Firendly Arm Inn, Carnival, Ulgoth Beard) or next to a bartender.
      I usually learn Spells in 2 tranches: Early spells like MM, Invis, Identify, Prot Fire, Prot Petrify etc via Red Potion and later with the Pots of Genius when you finally find knock, Web, Skull Trap etc.
      War Hammers: Yes they do have 1d4 damage, but an initial +1 bonus on top of that. so non magical WH: 1d4+1, War Hammer +2: 1d4+3 etc.
      So it's like a 1d6 weapon with a more even distribution (cutting the 1 and 6 damage rolls)

      Thanks for your thoughtful detailed comments as always Quark ! A real student of the game
      The 25 int potion was a mind blower to read about. I def have to use that. Great tip.

      @@quarktasche4997. Web, maybe its also possible to learn early on (before main story).
      There's a guy, that has 1 of this (the guy that wants to sell you cursed items, Borda, in Xvart Village, West of Nashkel), just kill him to get the web scroll. The second one is when you're going to the Nashkel mines (main story) but that one is way more dangerous, and no way you want to do it if youre playing a no-reload + max diff

      Borda is not easy to kill, particularly with SCS. IIRC he has 100% MR or very close to that, so spells are useless. You can mob him with summons if you have the wand, but one time he invis’d himself out of that, ignored the mob and backstabbed me to end my run.

    I highly encourage people to look into the auto roller for BG lol. I'll set it up, go to work and come home and see what it rolled.

    You don’t hit Firebead up again for another 300gp/30interactions (and 300xp, +1 rep, and scroll case for his quest)? Directly across from Feldpost’s…

    may I ask what mods are you using? It looks like as if you had higher refresh rate and maybe walked faster (I could just be imagining it). And also the world map looks different.

    • @WJ_24
      @WJ_24  Місяць тому +2

      The world map is from Baldur's Gate Trilogy. The refresh rate yes is indeed a bit faster, that is actually editable in the baldur.ini settings file if you just open that up in a text editor. You can change it to the speed of your liking but I think I did something like 40 or 45 FPS when the default is like 30.

    20:00 - you say Int is a dump stat, that it doesn't affect anything save using wands and scribing scrolls, but the Fandom BG1 Wiki entry for Intelligence says "Maximum Spell Level: Intelligence determines the maximum level of a spell a wizard is able to learn, starting at a score of 9, needed for all spells of level 4 and below, while a score of 18 is needed to learn level 9 spells." If you're playing thru the whole saga, don't you need to cast level 9 spells as a solo???

    • @WJ_24
      @WJ_24  Місяць тому

      yes absolutely, but the only way that this aspect is checked is at the time you're trying to memorize the scroll. So even if your INT would hard cap you at level 5 spells, the second you chug some potions of genius to get your INT higher, you immediately can learn the spells above the level cap. And you can cast them unlimitedly once learned. So this sounds like a scary limitation but, like the % chance to memorize scrolls, it is completely irrelevant as long as you get your INT up via potions when you go to memorize scrolls.

    • @GTass455in
      @GTass455in Місяць тому +1

      @@WJ_24 Got it, makes perfect sense... you chug the potions, scribe the scrolls, and then when you go to cast the spells, you don't need high INT anymore :) great explanation, thank you

    • @nomi.8658
      @nomi.8658 9 днів тому

      Didn't EE even made an UI option to auto-scribe the spells.
