With monstera's i highly recommend starting with a regular one before getting the ridiculously expensive variegated version, having hands on practice is really important. Also Danni i hope you contacted the seller to get a refund for receiving a plant that died so quickly after getting it.

I had the exact same progression with a monstera cutting i brought back from hawaii 😭 Thankfully, I was able to have her recover fully and finish rooting in water until I was able to put her in soil. It’s been 3 months and it’s grown a new leaf, grown in stem length, and began aerial roots. Your sterile technique is really great, but I think the biggest difference was that you didn’t spray H2O2 on ALL the black parts (the leaf remnants, all aerial roots) and also ADD H2O2 to the rooting water (like 2-4% dilution in the volume of rooting water). Then, keep re-spraying black parts daily-ish with fan afterwards for quick surface drying. But do change the water daily (and cut off squishy rotten parts + add h2o2). After 2 weeks, the fungal/bacterial infection was done! Hope that helps.

Very interesting video. I'm glad you posted it on this channel too. It's such a shame about the plant.

Yeah, it looks like they did you dirty on the first Monstera. That was way too much soil for such little roots. I always check the roots as soon as I get a plant package and then I would clean the plant and put it in water for a day so that it hydrates. Then I would try to grow additional roots by propagating in sphagnum or in a jar with perlite while covering the top of the jar with plastic wrap. Works everytime.

Yes! Thank you...I just received my Constellation. Now I will know what to look for if things take a turn for the worse. So far so good. It arrived absolutely perfect...no rot at all. All roots beautiful and white...a lil dehydrated. Really liked this video!

That's why I hate purchasing plants overseas and online it's picture vs reality that comes with such major issues. Good thing I live in a very tropical country that's why those kind of plants are cheaper and more convenient to purchase

Hey Dani, when I had problems, I cut the rot off an left the stem out in the air probably 6,7 hours an then put it in orchid pot with spag moss an had no more problems. Good luck I hope it makes it. 💚😀

PS. That Albo should of never been potted up with only an air root. The heavy soil made it worse. Sorry

If place the cutting in a larger container with more water, and change water every day or even every half day, probably can save it. Also, maybe not a good idea to cut off all the roots, even including the the tiny bit left. If no roots left, at least keep only one leaf to balance. Lastly and probably most importantly, this is what I heard from a youtuber working in a monstera nursery - if water go inside the core of the stem, then it's a confirmed death. Need to air dry for 0.5-1 hour first until see the wounds dry up, then can place in water.

I just watched another video from Peggy's Plants and she showed the same thing happening to her Monstera Albo cutting. She said they're known for being difficult? Anyways, like you said the fact that the aerial root was rotting and the new leaf etc seems a sign all was not right with the cutting. I think videos like this are really helpful.

It's sad you couldn't save the first plant Danny, I do believe as well if you unpotted and checked the roots from the very first day you got it you might have saved it, but hey we always learn :)
The pot and that soggy soil looked way too much for such tiny root system.

I recommend a hydrogen peroxide soak for about 2-3h, not just a spritz. Sometimes the infection may be hiding in the stem, so a long soak would ensure all of that is killed off.

Mine was in a styrofoam box and in the mail for almost 2 months before it randomly showed up at the door for me and I expected a melted plant...but it was super healthy. I think you were a little over zealous with the cutting. I would have suggested you just removed the plant from the soil and keep it in a more humid area and just mist it a couple times daily and done nothing else to the plant. It would have likely grown aerial roots where the other bad roots were. Monstera borsigiana does not like being cut like that.

  • @sunnyyang5509

Sorry to see this happen to you. I used to watch your orchid UA-cam clip heaps as I’ve always been an orchid grower and in the last few years I switched over to aroids. I think a lot of your methods was actually really good although what the dehydration was really due to was the huge leaves and no roots. I agree that I don’t really take the leaves off but when you got no roots, the plant does set back heaps. Also re-opening the wound to rehydrate it, the cutting can then rot again. Ive had a very similar experience but I did manage to save my tip cutting although it took about 9 months to get it back to health. The main thing that saved mine in the end was to aerate my propagating water with an air stone. This actually does wonders for cuttings with no roots as the oxygen bubbles reduces the chance of rot and also stimulates root growth again. Also I bombard it with rooting solution to try and get it to re root in a timely manner. Better luck next time aye

My monstera is thriving..I use fish fertilizer and occasionally some B12. I dont water from the top of the plant, I pour the water into the drain tray under the plant and let the plant absorb it up from the bottom.

If you would cut off all or most of the leaves I don’t think it will get dehydrated and the energy reserved will go into growing new roots.

The best way to try and reroot a monstera with such serious rot is to do it the way I do seriously root rotted orchids and sit it above the water in the jar/vase without it actually touching the water otherwise they usually just continue to rot. Also cutting that leaf in half will reduce water loss. I grow all my monsteras (and my hoyas) in orchid mix. They love it and do really well in it. You've got a serious problem with that plant unfortunately.

    • @angeldream1

So take the orchid out and take off the stuff around the roots and just set it above water?

    • @tasgardener7923
      @tasgardener7923 3 роки тому +4

@@angeldream1 yes remove all rotted stuff and sit in a jar with a bit of water but make the plant is not touching the water as it will just continue to rot. It will provide enough humidity to encourage new root growth. If the rot was really bad I sit the jar inside a large plastic bag to provide even more humidity and warmth but make sure no moisture builds up in the crown. You don't want crown rot. To prevent it I leave the top of the bag open with just the top of the orchid poking out so water doesn't pool in the crown. I've had a lot of success with the method with all sorts of plants but if course there are other methods as well but this is the one if find works best for me. I just put pics of the orchids I'm rerooting now on my insta (@tasgardener) yesterday if you are interested in the method and want to have a look at how I do it. You might have to scroll back a bit for original in the jar. The latest pic I put up is of the new roots.

I don’t really have a “real” one so my name is iamnotarobot420 and it’s a pic of a dog w sunglasses just letting u know hahahah thanks again! I don’t know what the crown is but I will google all that and try to save two of them bc they’re not good. Two of mine have all the flowers still snd are fine and they’re in a different side of my room so I’m thinking that may be important idk but I noticed some new leaf growth on one over there so I’m hoping I can get better at it thank u agajn

Hi Danny, I'm a new subscriber and absolutely adore your channel!!you're so helpful and kind in every video of yours. Also informative and keen to teach others!! I'm so sorry to hear about your Monstera loss. I recently got my first orchid and I am noticing some black at the base of the root that is connected to the stem. Is this signs of stem rot? Maybe I over watered it perhaps. Any idea what I can do? I recently repotted it (I watched your video for this) and I have been giving it a low dose of fertilizer every week. It has a healthy root system but the very dark/ black color at the base of a few roots which is attached to the stem is worrying me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
