The dollar store is not always the best choice. They charge a dollar for items that sell for 79 cents in discount grocery stores. Just because it's a dollar doesn't necessarily mean it's a bargain!
1 thing is that the dollar tree is one store , yes you might be able to get 1 item cheaper at another store but I'm with you cuz I'd just like to get it at 1 store like you did then go all over and pay far more in gas ⛽😉 .... That's really good that you got to eat and still could be filled on $10.00
@@ashleymarie7452 Thing about eating your groceries from the dollar store is that most people who do so, do it because of accessibility. They may or may not have transportation to go hither and yon looking for better bargains. That also costs more money. Some things are, *on balance*, cheaper.

Honestly if you just go to your local grocery stores at least once every week and ONLY buy sale items in bulk you can eat pretty damn well for cheap! You don't even need to use the prefab foods this channel uses a lot. Just learn to cook a few simple bulk meals that last for days like stews, chilis, pastas, soups etc and you'll eat like a king on very little money. You have to shop regularly though, so you're constantly stocking up on sale items or bulk items that are often cheaper than sale items(always do the math, they try to trick you). I'm not a college student, just a single guy. I literally eat like a king on 100 bucks a month. Not high calorie low nutrition food like most of the stuff in this channel either. Fresh veggies and fruits are not a problem if you have a fridge. Many of them last a LONG time.
@@MrBottlecapBill 100% agreed. Produce is cheap, and will keep you healthier than many people on high budgets! Frozen produce is great too. Canned fish fillets, mussels, and oysters are cheap and great for you too. Even if you make cheap stovetop ramen, you can get a proper, delicious meal by adding some frozen vegetables and canned seafood.

I won't be able to grocery shop until next week. I am seriously worried about what I will be able to feed my husband, toddler, and myself until then. Our budget will be slim when we can finally shop. This recipe is going into the meal plan. It looks so delicious, cheap, and while salty, nutritious. I am binging these videos. Thank you so much for this content, even if this video is a year old, it is helping me today.
Food wise, if you are on a limited budget or diet, this is actually a very balanced meal for processed foodstuff. I have no idea what it's like for herbs over there, but in the UK we have herbs in pots that are very cheap in the supermarkets (talking a whole pot of growing Parsley, Cilantro, Basil or Chives for $1.50). If you have them, have you considered a tub with a herb garden in it? Mine are 3 years old and always dish up the goods on the windowsill. A small cheap, plentiful herb garden suitable for city or apartment dwelling would be a great change of direction as that is where poor standards of living are mostly found. However, I really like watching these constructive videos! Thumbs up Larry.
great idea, I enjoy these videos! I like making things like this stretch... In a hard pressed situation a box of store brand mac and cheese for 29cents you can use the same concept, toss in a store brand can of peas (or a half a can) for 40cents and bite size a single slice of any lunch meat to stir in.... I remember about 16 my folks just couldn’t afford me or rather they took my paycheck and I still had no money and things still weren’t paid but my go to meal was rice with those cheap gravy’s and I would ration out two spoonfuls of gravy to stir into my rice to give me the illusion I was eating something more than rice.... .but I liked it!!. It’s amazing how creative you can get..!!
Hey if you're new to being on your own I just wanna say good luck getting settled. Wish more people in your position tried stuff like this instead of living off ramen lol.
Thank you for this great idea!! As I watched it, I let my imagination get ahead of me, I want to add cream of chicken soup and make it like pot pie without the crust and have crescent rolls. Also could do red beans and chili seasoning and have flat bread with it. Use a little ground beef in place of sausage and add Italian seasonings .... I just love your meal starter!! Any way I do it can be inexpensive!!

I just made this meal for the first time tonight, and it’s now part of my life forever. But my man is not a fan of the scallop potatoes, so that means more for me all week! (And also Cajun Skillet more often because we both love that too 🤤❤️)
My mom did large pans full of fried potatoes with chopped hot dogs, onions and peppers. Hamburger gravy over mashed. Vats of homemade soup.😊 we had 6 kids and she and my dad worked hard. Nobody went hungry but I know they struggled sometimes
Just wanted to say thank you for posting these videos! I've been through some pretty rough times myself and was fortunate enough to have people to help me - I can't imagine having a family to feed on a very tight budget! +1 karma
My dad grew up during the Great Depression. When we were young, we are alot of stuff like this. As a single working man, eating like this, always kept me full. The only difference is, he would always insist on bread of some kind. Rolls, biscuits or sliced bread. Even the military to this day serves bread with all meals. Thank you.
Looks delicious! While I don't have to struggle now, I've learned there will be rainy days, so this is a great way to save for them while eating deliciously! Thanks!
If you didn’t have sausage this would’ve made a nice broccoli potato soup and cheese - forgot the cheese. Because of Mr. Cool I have to explain that I’m not vegan or vegetarian I’m just stating broccoli soup sounds delicious.
@Mr. Cool I wouldn’t call it vegan because cheese comes from a cow so it’s vegetarian but broccoli soup is good doesn’t matter if you’re vegetarian or not
@Mr. Cool Vegan diets can be livable, it's just that many vegans are retarded neo-hippies that have never heard of an essential amino acid or complete protein, much less looked into how they need to adjust a vegan diet to fit all their nutritional needs. However, this is not a vegan dish and that is not a worry.
I remember when I was so poor I had to grocery shop at the Dollar Tree with $20 a week. It was rough but I made it through. Definitely wish I had a channel like this back then.
At first I thought he was joking, "dehydrated potato slices", haha that's a new way of saying chips! Took me a while to realise that's an actual thing. I've never seen it in any stores here though.
I could get a similar effect by pre slicing cheap potatoes and steaming them for a bit before adding it too the mix...Like a lot of the stuff here ....its adaptable to modification based on available goods. Plus I have never seen dried potatoes in Britain either....But that cheese mix looks suspiciously similar to awful macaroni cheese mix here. I would swap that out for proper cheap cheddar.
@@brokeandtired -- fwiw, the cheese sauce powder IS similar to that's found in (U.S.) mac & cheese mix. Here, at least, it tends to be a thinner/more watery sauce with the scalloped potatoes but similar enough otherwise to be kindred.

I just made this, I used only 1 TB of butter & just frozen brussel sprouts, instead. Great value brand, of course! I steamed them a few mins & cut them in quarters. Since they were already cooked, I added them at the last few mins of cooking. Transferred to casserole dish, cooked for 10 mins. The household liked it, even the picky teen boy!Anyone have an ideas on other veggies to put in? Larry, Mr. Wolfepit, thank you so much for the easy, quick recipes. I am not a great cook, so these are life savers! This is the 2nd of your recipes I've tried. Please keep them coming!
I just fixed this and all I can say is one word:YUM! It is savory and filling. There is some left over and I am going to TRY to freeze it for later. Can't say if it'll last long enough for it to freeze though. It's on the list of repeat fixes in the future. Thank you for this😋😋😋
Im not really on a budget but, IM LAZY AND THAT LOOKS YUMMY AF. this is whats for dinner tomorrow, Im gonna name this dish for you, POTATOES AU LA LARRY. i think this might be a easy go to meal for when im too tired from work.
This looks really good to me. I sure could have used some of your tips and knowledge when I was a teenager back in the 60’s , trying to come up with ideas for dinner for my 4 brothers and sister. It was tough.
I've been watching for a couple years now. I just like to save money, and these are just great meal ideas. I've never done a recipe step by step, as living in Canada often we wouldn't have the exact same things, but the ideas can easily be transferred to any where. A little bit of creativity and you can make the best out of anything.
this looks pretty good honestly. alot of this man's meals have literally kept me going a few times. years later I'm finally doing pretty well but still love going back and watching
I love this guy, just a nice man helping poor people eat well. Nobody needs to eat fast food with these healthy cheap recipes, I have made a few of these, all good! My German grandparents approve!
I use half the amount of sausage in mine, and any leftover veggies I have in the freezer, it doesn't matter. Have you noticed that the size of the boxes of the potatoes have gotten smaller? We are eating totally out of our pantry this month due to finances. By the end of the month it may get to be a real challenge since hubby doesn't like rice, I'm sticking it in everything throughout the month so he doesn't have a whole week with just plain rice. I really appreciate all the help you have given to my family.
I think my favourite thing about this recipe is that even with an unlimited budget the only thing I'd do differently would be substituting the meat choice to chicken breast or thigh which would still keep it really budget friendly. I've never seen those packets of potatoes here in Aus but I feel like I could get a cheap packet of soup mix and cut some potatoes really thinly myself rather than buying them for about the same price anyway. I don't need to budget that much for food but I've been there before and I love watching these videos to humble myself a little bit and remind myself that maybe I don't need uber eats again this week haha
I grew up eating food like this. I'm 60 years old now. It's important that someone shares this content. The struggle is real.

That looks great, and if you want to splurge a little bit, you can always top it with a bit of grated cheese for extra crispiness.
I haven't had boxed augratin potatoes in years and now I want some. honestly looks really good, and I love that you post these budget meals.
I would eat that any day.
Larry.. not sure but did you do a tater tot hot dish yet? It fits perfectly for "on a budget ". Thanks for the video.
I love tater tots, and I would be happy to see a dish featuring them.
There was one with tater tots, I think it was the budget casserole dish?
Redneck casserole has tater tots and is delicious. Made it many times for friends. Recipe should be on his channel.
great idea, I enjoy these videos!
This channel has been a lifesaver as I am on my own. Thank you for what you do!
Hey if you're new to being on your own I just wanna say good luck getting settled. Wish more people in your position tried stuff like this instead of living off ramen lol.
This channel is gonna be great when me and my partner move out. Were two teenagers in college so every penny counts. So thank you for these videos
Check out Cooking With Clara (Great Depression Cooking) and Living on a Dime (website and UA-cam). All are focused on cheap cooking and tips
These are my favorite videos man!
We don't typically struggle with our food, but there are times where we have to tighten up a bit and, what you are doing here would be great help during that kind of week.
That actually looks very good.
I absolutely love your videos, and very much appreciate that you stress that these aren't for people who are trying to eat so much that they are super full because they had like 5 servings for themselves. Not everyone has that kind of $$$. Thanks for the awesome content
I love this channel because it reminds me of the food I used to eat when I was a kid. I loved those days, I might make this for dinner today for old times sake
Love the content. Not all of your viewers are poor or struggling.
And the ones that are struggling love the content even more i can tell ya
That looks amazing. I am very impressed with this. I can't wait to make it!
1. Thank you for your videos. They're great!
2. Tiny, tiny, tiny thing: I doubt you really mean what you've written here. .78¢ = "under one penny." 78¢ = "under one dollar", as is the case with $0.78.
Cheers!
Even if i am not from the US but from a former communist european state your content is interesting, you've earned a new sub, wish a channel like this was in Romania
For me it's just entertainment, but this video can help so many people who need it! You're amazing man.
That’s something that I’d definitely cook myself it looks so good.
*Larry I think 🤔 once cooked crispy smoked bacon bites on top would add that meat candy flavor!* 🤗👍
I just made this meal for the first time tonight, and it’s now part of my life forever. But my man is not a fan of the scallop potatoes, so that means more for me all week! (And also Cajun Skillet more often because we both love that too 🤤❤️)
That sausage is $3.48 today.
Inflation. And these videos are going to become extremely popular soon.
Thanks for making them!
I use BAR hotdogs instead when I cook this, also sold at Walmart. Eight hotdogs for 1.28 in my state, just under 5 bucks for a family pack of 24.
WOW! Yet again, THE MAN comes through for us, his followers, so WE DON'T HAVE TO!!!
WTG, Fearless Leader of the 'Cheap Meals Brigade'!✨🤗✨
Thank you.
Missed your vids, thank you for all you do!
@Mr. Cool I wouldn’t call it vegan because cheese comes from a cow so it’s vegetarian but broccoli soup is good doesn’t matter if you’re vegetarian or not
Yum
@Mr. Cool yeah.. i don't get it why people want to suffer. Ul miss out on so many important vitamines etc.
@Mr. Cool jew
I remember when I was so poor I had to grocery shop at the Dollar Tree with $20 a week. It was rough but I made it through. Definitely wish I had a channel like this back then.
Let’s gooooo Larry returns!
Teaching common sense through cooking... Great job and kudos to you sir...
This is the kind food we grew up on. We were a hard working family on a budget.
It’s fun discovering new flavors for budget prices!
I'm sure loving your easy and inexpensive pantry meals!!!! Keep them coming, very useful! 👍💪❤️😘
Crazy how great that looked and it only needed 6 items in total to make. Another great video that actually helps people. Good job Larry!
Dehydrated potatoes look like deep fried potatoes, but without the golden goodness, and metric tonne of salt... :P
At first I thought he was joking, "dehydrated potato slices", haha that's a new way of saying chips!
Took me a while to realise that's an actual thing. I've never seen it in any stores here though.
They are not common -- instant mashed potatoes are much more readily available. Here in Canada, they are usually called scalloped potatoes. 🥔
@@brokeandtired bacon instead of Sausage, boiled potatoes instead of instant and some cream instead of milk and you have a perfectly French/south german dish.
Dang man...I saw this video a few months ago and decided to try it today...HOLY CRAP is this amazing! 100% going to be making this regularly now. I've had to tighten up my budget significantly in the past few months and being able to eat off of this most of the week is going to be a life saver.
These are the best and are gonna save us through the upcoming depression, thank you!♡
I just made this, I used only 1 TB of butter & just frozen brussel sprouts, instead.
This looks hella good!! My husband would take down this whole pan!!
As someone currently going through college, and getting down to the wire, I thank you Larry
"Bring it to a boil."
Liquid: I'm not boiling. I don't even have a simmer going yet...wow...don't even care, huh?
Maaaaaaaan I wish the channel was a thing when I was newly married!!! We were so broke but hadn’t learned how to cook then! Keep up the great work!!!
"I guess it's just my sick imagination" going to start using that line myself lol
this looks pretty good honestly. alot of this man's meals have literally kept me going a few times. years later I'm finally doing pretty well but still love going back and watching
I'm definitely giving this a try, looks awesome
I love this guy, just a nice man helping poor people eat well. Nobody needs to eat fast food with these healthy cheap recipes, I have made a few of these, all good! My German grandparents approve!
This unironically looks delicious. Screw on a budget, I’d be happy to eat this anytime. May have to give it a go
I use half the amount of sausage in mine, and any leftover veggies I have in the freezer, it doesn't matter.
Actually caught a recent vid. Usually just watch catch up vids. Salute Sir Wolf
Watching your videos I feel I will always be able to make a hearty meal on a budget
My mom makes this kind of, she does a sausage with red potatoes, some onions and stuff like that. It's pretty good.
