It's rough and I've been there. Back before social media was a huge thing. I turned budget meals into a hobby out of necessity. 2 bucks to rent a movie at blockbuster on the weekend and 10 bucks to feed myself for the week. I was lucky to have a vacuum sealer back then. @Lori Anne That's a classic combination. I've done a lot of egg drop ramens -- boil up a pack or two of ramen with as much of the seasoning as you like in the broth. When it's done to your liking, stir in a beaten egg and let the egg cook in the broth before serving. You can also make a peanut (butter) sauce with some of the broth, a tablespoon or two of peanut butter, and some garlic powder and/or soy sauce, if you have it. Drain the noodles -- save that tasty broth for later -- and mix in the peanut sauce for satay noodles. If you happen to have a green onion -- the green part of a sprouted onion counts -- or other vegetation, toss it in the ramen broth as well mix as well to add vitamins and flavor. Enjoy!

There is such a deep gap between poor and too poor to eat until you're full. A lot of people grew up poor, and it was hard. But there are a lot of people who grew up so poor that they just don't talk about it much. My dad's family of 5 was so poor, all they had to eat was corn for months on end. 70 years later, he would never touch corn again if he had a dollar in his pocket.

You can save the bone, freeze it, and make broth when you have enough bones saved. You can mix it with chicken bones, or a whole chicken carcass. Stick the bones in the oven first on high until it's been roasted, then dump it all in a pot and cover with water and boil for several hours. Great for soups :)

And so nutritious! I have terrible GI issues, and sometimes just live on bone broth. I put all roasted bones in my crockpot with bay leaf, celery, carrot, etc. 2 Tbsp vinegar helps bring out the nutrients from the bones. 12 to 24 hrs later, you have high protein, highly nutritious broth. Great comment, thank you! Most people don’t know the true value of the foods they purchase.

I have no dietary issues, and am by no means a chef/expert - but learning to buy cheaper stuff with bones and then what to do with those bones, is massively satisfying - and gives you an ingredient for say ramen that's better than anything you could buy.
InstantPot (or any other similar brand - or even an OG stove-top pressure cooker)
Freeze leftover bones/veggies, when when you've got enough ideally roast up and then make the elixir of the gods!
Saw or poultry-shears are really handy for getting those carcasses down into smaller chunks with more surface area and easier extraction of the gelatinous-unctuousness.
#edit - Did Mr wolf just suggest buying dough??
Just buy a big-ass bag of budget flour, and you can make flat-breads, pasta and all the rest.
Sure, it's nice to have different gluten flours for the different things you might want to make, but they'll all work.
Again your freezer can be your friend for mahoosive blocks of bakers yeast, which work out better than the expensive little sachets

My last bag was cooked in a large roasting pan, and deboned the next day, reserving the meat for burritos, casseroles and soup, the bones and skins in a stock pot filled to 12 quarts with water, simmered for 9-10 hours, strained, yielded 5 and 1/2 quarts, then reduced to 4 quarts, filtered and stored in mason jars. Final product is what my hubby calls "chicken jello", jiggly when shaken. This will be the base for soup, or a cold chicken jello salad for hot weather. I GREATLY appreciate the variety of recipes in these videos. It's easy to eat the same thing too long and get bored with it if you are not careful.
Also, if you are feeling super cheap, tortillas are super easy to make too. Just make some golfball-size dough balls with water, flour, and a little salt, roll them out in a round(ish) shape, and cook them on a dry frying pan on medium heat. I typically flip them when they start to bubble, then cook the other side just long enough for the little brown "freckles" to form.
It ends up being just a few minutes per tortilla, and the bubbling makes it flexible so it doesn't break when you fold it.

You show some great ideas in your videos, Mr. Wolfe, and I find them fascinating. I've been cooking since I was 8 years old, so for 61 years, I've been cooking and baking. But now that I'm retired, live alone, and can make a meal that used to serve six people---setting aside five portions for later meals for myself---I want to keep things budget friendly. While I'd be using chicken, beef, bison, or turkey for my meats, watching what you come up with gives me a lot of good ideas that fit well with how I want to eat.
That your budget meals really do fit lower budgets is a terrific thing, as so many of us are struggling now, no matter how much money anyone has; and for those who use SNAPS cards, or other forms of getting their food, I just know that any seriously presented ideas to turn out good, decent, nutritious meals has to be very welcome.

I live alone and am a disabled senior. I love doing this! After I shred the meat, I'll make pork enchiladas, refrigerate them, put them in snack size zip bags then into a freezer bag. I like them saucy so I'll freeze more sauce in ice cube trays 1/2 full then add those cubes to the individual enchilada bags. Perfect for one. The rest of the meat I also package in snack bags then a freezer bag so I can have just the right amount for me to make stir fried rice, a taco, a burrito, pork chili, BBQ sandwich, pork with beans, egg rolls with cabbage and carrots, etc. Now I'll have to try some of your meal ideas, thanks!

Pork fried rice is also a delicious and cheap way to use pulled pork. For the best rice cook it a day in advance and let it overnight in the fridge. Then heat up some frozen mixed veggies, add the pork and rice and heat it up with an egg or two, some soy sauce if you have it.

Wolfe, this is awesome! Great job, man. Pulled pork is a great thing to stretch. In fact, if you're budgeting but get to a point where you can reward yourself with extra ingredients, try redneck egg rolls as a way to use up your leftover coleslaw mix. So good! One thing I've been doing lately because my husband and I love steak, but can't afford to eat it all the time is London broil. It may seem daunting at first, but the key to a good one is marinating with apple cider vinegar and/or citrus (lemon or lime), Worcestershire sauce and seasonings of your choice. Then, drizzle with butter and parsley or carrot greens while it's resting when you're done cooking. When you cut that puppy into thin strips, you can make all kinds of great stuff! Burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, protein bowls, philly cheesesteaks, steak sandwiches, salads, stir fry, everything under the sun. I can easily feed the both of us for lunch and dinner all week on a $10-$12 cut of top round London broil.

Thank you for the video! If you happen to read this comment, I'd love to see you do some stuff with chicken thighs. We always get boneless skinless thighs and I either marinate them and bake them 400 degrees for about 20 mins, fry it in a pan with butter, or deep fry them. The marinade is just basic seasoning, couple tbsp of oil, soy sauce, worcestershire sauce, adobo, garlic, a little vinegar, maybe cilantro, chilis or onions/diced veggie of your choice.. The chicken and pan drippings can be used in everything from stir fries, ramen, shakshuka (my favorite), sandwiches, quesadillas, stews, alfredo pasta, rice etc. A big bag of chicken thighs is around 7 -10 dollars where I live, and lasts for a month or more.

Or pita breads, super versatile and amazing fried in butter. I have to suggest that as it's just a fundamental part of my impoverished polish childhood

This is one of the best yet! Cooking and prepping ahead of time helps save us so much (we have trouble motivating to cook for ourselves at the end of an exhausting day) and I appreciate this channel a lot.

starting around April 24, gefilte fish will be on sale. It's part of a traditional Passover dinner. It's slightly sweet, eaten with some horseradish (or a similar type tartar would be good). I'm not sure who ends up buying the leftover jars, but for inexpensive protein, it's worth trying. I like it. It doesn't have that typical 'canned' type flavor since it's in a glass jar typically.

Gefilte fish is not always sweet. I don't care for the sweet brands myself. If you try it and don't care for the sweet flavor, try another brand.

Ug. You can have ALL the gefilta fish that should be mine, okay? I never want to see or smell it again.

When my son was little and I was working my way through school, a boxed pizza kit and one hot dog made Hot Dog Pizza. Fun fact: I retired from Law practice and my son is now a commercial real estate broker with a family. But we both still love to make Hot Dog Pizza.

I think I have met your Scooter, who would eat all the meat in one sitting. As it is, with the prices of things higher than a cat's back, my beef becomes broccoli/beef stir fry. I can fees 6 people on a pound of low cost steak. I add chow mein to the dinner menu as well as won-ton soup and whatever else I have. The last time I did this, no one realized that they only had a 2 oz (or so) serving of beef and no one walked away hungry. Fried rice is also a hit with this menu, especially if you only have a handful or so of left over chicken and a quarter bag of mixed vegetables.
I love your ideas, and Memphis spaghetti sounds interesting, but I have no problems using pork in a marinara either.
Thank you for your channel. I have referred many of my friends and relatives over to you.

The seasonings you mentioned here I get out of the Dollar Store. My landlord has let us go a year with a busted oven so I do a slow roast in my slow cooker. I miss this bark. Great video

This is fantastic, thank you! I've had a picnic roast in my freezer for a long time and I just didn't want to have bbq sandwiches for days and days. Your creativity has inspired me to cook that roast next week and use it all week long.

When I first came to the US I was irritated that most colleagues overseas weren’t taught even the basics of cooking but I soon considered it modern to adapt to their style just to buy fully prepared meals or mixing up some convenience items... but it was a costly, costly life style which also lacked varieties. Teach your kids to cook. It like teaching a man to fish...

Try making your homemade pizza on tortillas, there are many different sizes to suit your needs. They are pretty cheap when compared to pizza crusts, and delightfully thin and crispy😍

one time I had nothing to cook my kids for supper. my husband was working nights and since he wasn't home for dinner he thought we didn't need anything. It was very cold and our house would not get warm no matter how many space heaters we ran. So, I looked at what was available. I had a shriveled carrot, one egg, flour and chicken bullion cubes. So I made chicken noodle soup. the kids loved it and it filled them up. Hot soup is very warming.

As a kid, my mother had close to zero money to raise us kids with (my father was an alcoholic). Meals like this remind me of the love my mum had for us. (she's still alive). One day i'll cook them with her, while telling her how much i love her.
