Boiling water kills fire ants. One of my empty half barrel planters was infested and a kettle of water fixed it right up. One year I even carefully treated a vegetable bed without killing the plant.

I’ve done that in the past but this container is filled with spring plants and bulbs … I don’t want to damage the plants with the boiling water.

Congrats to the winner! ❤ I loved seeing all that you harvested! I've started some statice, and I'm hoping it'll come back for me. It's going to be so much fun watching all of these grow and so exciting again come next Spring to see what survived! 💐

The first time I grew marigolds, I grew Crackerjack marigolds. The only marigolds I was familiar with were the short ones they sell at nurseries. Imagine my surprise when they kept growing and growing. I think they ended up being about 4 ft. tall. 😅

I grew the CrackerJack last year too and I was surprised by their lovely scent as well as their height, mine overwhelmed my pepper plants. 🙂

I direct seed my marigolds. I treat the seeds like a pin and just stick them in the ground vertically. They all grow for me that way and don't blow away.

Oh thank you so much for the seed starting lessons on marigolds. Mine had failed several times. These lessons are also teaching me how to use my Sun Blaster Nano Dome Mini Greenhouses in a more productive way. I do get confused about when to open the dome, how long to use the heat mats, and so on. You are a lifesaver. 😊

Watching your harvest is like a preview of what we have to come in Michigan❤
I’ve grown the Coco marigolds and have buried the seeds down an inch and they sprouted in three to four days, so that’s one that you can direct sow.

Loved this. I wonder if sprinkling vermiculite to direct sown seeds will help as place holders. Sun goes thru it to seeds and keeps them from drying out. Congrats to the winner!

Funny story I have the hardest time growing larkspur last year I tried to winter sow a bunch of seeds only got one plant so I planted it and loved the tall blue flowers. This year I decided I would try to place some seeds in the refrigerator on a paper towel to try to cold stratify and maybe have better luck waited a week and placed in soil to germinate well I waited and waited but nothing I gave up them and told myself I would never ever grow them well out of nowhere the plant I had success with last year I guess decided to seed itself and I have a bunch of baby larkspur everywhere in a bed i did not intend for them to be there now I’m like gah all that trouble for nothing but yet that plant decides to seed itself without any effort at all 😂
