- This weeks midweek episode we share some big lap maintenance on the car and caravan. We share all the damages we have had while travelling australia for 3.5 years. We also share some tips on preventing them from happening and some spares to carry that could save you money.
In this episode you will see our three caravans that we have owned since leaving 3.5 years ago and the 2 tow rigs we have owned to get us to these amazing locations. Remember these are what we have had and we do know that people have had worse and we respect that. These are what have happened to us.

Guy’s 3 1/2 years travel + 120k travelled awesome- Derek may I offer you a few tips ; 1) water pump ( make sure you not only switch the power off to the pump but depressurise the line , the pump will last longer ) 2) Important modification Get an auto sparky or you can do it yourself- put a continuity alarm on the pin plug especially a 12 pin plug ( the moment the 2 seperate or the plug gets excessive wear the alarm will automatically sound an in cab alarm ( huge safety mod ) very cheap less than $100 installed.3 ) lose screws instead of a hard 2 part epoxy use Sika polyurethane T35 or the like ( being a vulcanised glue ) you will never have an issue with stripped screws or wholes plus it won’t crystallise like 2 part epoxies. 4) carry a mini grease gun with high temp moly grease it is dust/water/ very high temp and pressure grease which is the 1 grease that the mines use on their equipment. I totally agree with you both everyday walk around and a programmed schedule should be generated that way you don’t ever miss out on any part of your vehicle or caravan 5) 1 question/ concern is do you or don’t you have a transfer case breather / transmission breather extensions on your vehicle ( just a point to note ) 6) a major part that is very often missed is the o rings on your gas connection points ( get some rubber grease ) and say once every 3 to 6 months clean and apply some lubricant or if they look worn just carry spares and replace it. 7) you can get wheel nut movement indicators that just stick on to the nut and the rim ( making it very easy to see if the nuts have slackened off ( mechanical torque wrench with long handle is worth its weight in gold ) ( no need for batteries )8) in your particular Landcruiser and your rear loads you are carrying you really should have some gussets welded on both sides of your chassis where the rear flex point is happening ( it is not a GCM/GVM upgrade ) it is a safety mod ( this point is purely my suggestion from seeing many mine vehicles with Hi-Rail configuration fail just forward of the rear wheel arch ) please do not stress but I do recommend you get a NDT ( non destructive testing )done on the rear sections of your chassis . After all that - I truely enjoy your mid week Vlogs and only wish you the best. Stay well and Stay Safe.
3.5yrs, 120000 km that’s not a bad list.
However you may feel you don’t know anyone when and where you break down. But remember we all know you. You have a platform, use it to seek help/comfort when ever you feel stranded/stuck.
Many of us would put you up in our drive till you seek repairs. We’re all following or vanning for a common reason, use this. When you say you have a van fam, this is also you supporters.

Full time caravaning and a long term relationship are the same beast. You deal with the unwanted shit and then carry on enjoying and loving every other minute of it.

The scan tool is a great thing to carry around and a 12 volt test light. Next time if that light comes on the dashboard and you haven’t got a scanner with you,just take the battery terminal off for 5 minutes and that will clear it , you might have to just the clock. But I hope this helps.👍😎🚗

Oh dear! Deryk, you have to become a you tube mechanic and carry the tools you need to fix these things yourself. It will save you money and grief. But good on you for being in control of those warranties. That's not easy!
Thanks Jason, yeah we learnt fast being on the road but still learningnwith every km we travel. Luckily Deryck is pretty handy! He is the all round tradie on the road!😂
Always get ya trailer tyres ballenced or they vibrate and kill wheel bearings , some tyre places recon u don't need to , that's crap make sure they do it fixing a tyre , and yer wheel alignment on trailers any trailer I never really knew that until watching caravanning shows , cheers 🍻

I love my wife very much and I am sure she loves me, however I fear she may feature on Australia’s worst caravan crime - how do you make it work in such a small space. Lol congratulations 🎉
😂😂😂 that gave me a really good giggle! Ut did take some getting uses to. I think me working fulltime makes a big difference and taking time out, whether one of us goes for a walk or a swim! It def can work but yes, close quarters!

42:26 when u lose a screw out of ur doors or whatever, I use a match or two, get them right in deep and gently tap a bit. Now the screw has new wood to tighten in.

A friend's husband is an NRMA roadside mechanic, and apparently, Ford Rangers are the most common vehicle for issues. The Ford Ranger is a nice-looking beast and goes well, however, with reliability issues I went to the Landcruiser to tow our van.
WOW 120 000 Km , well done , like driving from Johannesburg to Cape Town 80 times 😅 wear and tear mate 😢 becomes expansive .

Congrats on the 120K km travelled, and another thought provoking video as well....Just an FYI for D....arm your good self with your Torque wrench, and check both your tow bar and bull bar mounting bolts.....my bet is you will find some "loose" if you havent been doing it.....never rely on the "Check all underbody bolts and Nuts"....and the big tick alongside when you get your car back from the dealer service.......voice of experience here.......Keep up the good work, and stay safe.....

Hi Guys enjoying your videos. The information you gave concerning issues would of been helpful to a lot of people. We carry an extra water pump because of advice given to us. I advise people with common rail diesel to put a secondary fuel filter in before the main filter and also a catch can to recirculate the fumes coming out of the engine. This stops the intake carboning up. Thanks Greg

Very informative & entertaining Sue & Derek. I look forward to your videos. I have had to replace fuel filters on my Toyota roadside on 2 or 3 occasions. A bit messy, but easy to do. Dust/dirt is your enemy - clean things down first. I also have a secondary fuel filter installed & carry spare filters for both. The flashing fuel light on the dash indicates a restriction (in my case it usually happens when giving the 200 a boot full uphill say!!) Solid light on the dash indicates water in the fuel - stop immediately (if safe) Luckily, the latter has not happened to me - yet !! Touch wood. Cheers, Dave

I would add a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System has bee good for me and because of rough roads I have popped some critical rivets. Carry a pop rivet gun and a selection of rivets.
Thanks we do have a TPMS and agree it is super handy and safe. The pop rivet gun is a great idea. We used to have one but not since SA last year!

We’ve managed 170k in our 2021 Triton MR UTE free of grief, well almost except not for the under lid tub dust.
Re van sweet little kms on our 2022 rusty new Snowy van , couldn’t take the new van much, waited for around 7 months for parts and warranty fixes & they refused to extend the warranty. 😡
I Feel sorry for the guys that have apparently waited for longer for window parts during and post Covid.
Lots of contradictory comments on blinds good information 👍🏻.
Think the Triton comes with transmission cooler 😁 did 500,000 kms in our 80 series Land Cruiser, not a fan of ford’s anymore
Tyre pressure/temp gauges are a must so are pre fuel filters we have a western filter, has a clear bowl so you can check it each day, redarc flashing good to investigate quick 👍🏼.
Chinese tyres not so good, torque wrench 👍🏼
Re opening doors, we had flour in one 😳

On our caravan I got a permanent marker and marked the position of the alighment alignment nuts on the suspension arms so if it gets knocked out you can put it back to where it was. Just a line across the nut and onto the arm. When your plugs are plugged in tape the cables together so if one plug comes out it is held up off the road by the others.

You can use Loctite products to secure screws and bolts but its probably more expensive and not any better. Although tradies might disagree esp if they're not the ones paying

Thank you both so very much for such informative vlogs. We did our first trip in our new to us van on the long weekend and I remember your last couple of videos. We nearly ran out of water because we didn’t think we would use so much (ie needed a water bladder) and second almost filled up the toilet cassette and could have used a second one as town didn’t have a dump point! And that was just a long weekend! Argh!! 😂😂

Thanks for all your tips and tricks on repairs. I'm sure we'll have our own problems with our van. We've already had it in for 5 repairs and it's a brand new van. It's a sunseeker desert storm and it still has problems.

I have travelled a lot with a Jayco Camper trailer and had some similar problems from time to time. Car is a Prado. I am experienced but have found this episode some enlightening. Good work you two.

Great Mid Week Vid guys !!! .. We've also experienced the Lang Lang Foreshore as our second shakedown trip !! and boy did it blow a gale, rained and the sun shined too :)

If a screw has pulled out and hole is too big too retighten screw, stick in the hole a cut down toothpick to the same length as the screw (may require one or two toothpicks) then put screw back in and tighten.

Hey guys that os super exciting! Good luck with the new van! Yes RACQ Ultimate. We were recovered to Mt Isa initially but it was during covid and the mechanics couldn't help us for 2 months, so explained it to RACQ and told them we found someone in Townsville who could help and asked for what they term a 2nd recovery. We had enough funds left in our cover to cover the cost and they agreed to it.
Hi, caught up with you in Ceduna not so long ago & had coffee on the foreshore - great vanilla slices from the bakery. You recently showed a fire pit & said the small ones are too small. Could you please advise what brand (Darche?) and what size you found best. Thank you.
Hey yes we remember! Great to hear from you Peter! We have had a couple of fire pits and we love the fireside pop up pit from BCF as it is light, larger and packs up really small. Alot ofbour friends have the Farche and they love it, just too small for us as we like a good couple of logs on the fire!!
Yep it dosnt matter What brand off car you have if it's got an automatic transmission in it and your towing it must have a transmission cooler installed , like the old days towing with the old cars the same thing nothing has changed still the same now but tramisions are more expensive now days to replace 😢
Agreed David. We learned the hard way! We recommend it to anyone towing.
Please excuse my ignorance, but if you let your tyres down how do you pump them up again?
You can use an electric pump that plugs into your cigarette lighter socket. An essential must have for off roading.
