Overall for all intents and purposes they are fairly even. The main difference is that the X17 looks and feels more premium with a much thinner profile, reminiscent of Apples Macbook Air.
I have one X17, I totally agree, this machine has the best look and feel, very solid and premium. The only thing that disappoints me is the quality of the FHD display, reading text on Windows 11 is a terrible experience.
Interesting comparison. I have the x17 R2. Previously I had the 17 R4. I liked the R4 much better. The 17 came with the number pad. Plus you could read the shift characters unlike the x17. I felt more comfortable with the 17 than the x17.
I was trying to decide between these two computers and your review could not have been more timely. I’m going to go with the GE 76 and I will use your affiliate link. Thanks!
My MSI GE72 is 6 years old and still works without any issues. I recently bought a MSI GE66 and couldn't be happier with it. Any other laptops that I've bought in the past from Dell, HP or Toshiba have died or had issues right after the end of the warranty.
@@JustinTechTips Yes I had 2 Dell Inspirion laptops for myself and my wife. My laptop had a power supply issue that failed before the warranty and was replaced but the second one failed a while later. My wife's Dell had screen issues after a year and could only be used with external monitor. I know the Alienware are built better but with my experience, I never wanted to try. My current work laptop is a Dell 5530 Precision with I9 and it constantly overheats even though it sits on a laptop stand. Disabling the turboboost was the only solution that worked.
I am contemplating getting an X17. They have a screen option for the 1920x1080 FHD 360Hz monitor of the UHD 3840x2160 4ms 120hz. I game primarily in addition to doing some work stuff, which does not include any form of rendering or content creation. Just wondering your take on it?
Yeah Cross Hairs it kind of does come down to personal preference based on all the pros and cons of each that I mentioned. My personal preference is on laptops that perform the best for creative software which is in this case different than the best laptop for gaming
I got my Alienware X17 fully specced out but chose the 360hz screen and I absolutely love this beast. Overall aesthetics was the reason I chose the Alienware over the GE76 or the Legion7i. Great video!
Thanks Paul! Yeah that was my thought process as well. All 3 beasts will satisfy anyone who hasn’t upgraded for a few years but they definitely appeal to people in different ways
@@steeveabitbol2466 I chose the 1080p 360hz display because I play the usual FPS games mainly and the fast refresh rate is amazing for that genre. I did consider getting the 4K 120hz display, but the GSync and Advanced Optimus on the 360hz display sold me. I also use a 27” Alienware external display that’s QHD 1440p 240hz when I use the laptop at home so I have the best of both worlds for now.
@@steeveabitbol2466 the loss of FPS is pretty significant between the 4K display and the 1080p 360hz display if you really want all the competitive advantage in shooters. I would have preferred that Dell allowed for a QHD 240hz display because it’s really the best of both worlds. Beautiful image and super fast refresh rate. I’d recommend doing a little bit of research on the 4K … lots of info on here.
Awesome review! Agree on both, what concerns RGB & styling and that the crucial criteria is actually gaming performance . For these are Gaming laptops. Kudos & please keep'em coming 😎👍
Hey by the way is there any option for buying RTX 3080 version of x17 from India…..and what’s ur opinion about them not giving a qhd panel and a 1TB storage for their 3080 version within the price included
What about the resize bar support for the rtx 3080 on the laptop? Have you looked into that? So many people keep making video comparison on these laptops but no one can address the resize bar support on them when I ask about it. I guess I'll figure it out my self once I recieve my x17
Great question Nam. Neither of them felt hot on my hands from the side vents. The keyboards felt great as well. Night and day difference from the heat that comes out of my m17 R3 by my hand. I’d say they produced about the same amount of heat out the side vents.
Either purchase will delight. It is important to note the compromises on each machine. The secondary key function lighting drives me bonkers, but the keyboard feel is worth it.
Yeah Christopher, I agree. I absolutely love the feel of the mechanical keyboard. Definitely worth the $50 upgrade, not sure why it was so hard to make it all glow

Thank you! Such quality and a superbly satisfying review of two titans. Subscribed! Picking between the both for black Friday deals and the MSI(for being cheaper at just $1999) looks like the winner to me!
The MSI have a plastic chassi? Or some parts in metal? And why you had tested webcam in iluminated room for MSI and bad light for Alien x71? Thx in advance. P.s. Have you seen that MSI had a better battery Li-poly?
Hey Simone, the MSI has a metal chassis. Sorry about the webcam lighting. I should have made the comparison more consistent. Overall the quality of the webcam was still a little better on the GE76 though.
@@JustinTechTips I had choose X17 because the thermal cooling It Is standard on Msi and build qualitiy, materials are better. Thx for your work, I will subscribe...👍
I did do a few tests before the mux switch was available with outputting to an external monitor and essentially it simulated the same thing a mux switch would do. It was faster but still the GE76 was slightly faster on several games.
I'd love to see the r2 x17 go head to head like this with the updated ge76 raider. I'm especially interested in the 4k screen options to do my creative stuff (if I can pry the gamer on the house off of it). I love the design of the x17 & that lovely cherry keyboard, but they seem to have degraded the speakers on the r2 & apparently the 4k screen is both dimmer & warmer (yellowish whites) than the r1. So if the speakers on the new ge76 are a touch better & the 4k screen is decent, I might think about that one. I really dislike the look of the msi but that's the least important thing for me on the list. By the way I've only just found your channel & wish I'd come across it sooner! You do outstanding reviews. Found you through a mention by Dave from MashIT (also a good'un)!
Thank you Mad Catter! Yeah David is a great guy! We’re doing another LIVE collab on the new Alienware m17 R5 this next month. Working on a video for the new GE76 right now but yes I definitely will be doing another 2022 vs video of the newer versions of these two here soon!
These laptops gets really good when you reinstall Windows. All of that bloatware does a number on the system, even with those specs. Would be curious to see what your results are after that.
I would think just uninstalling the bloatware or not having it run would be sufficient enough. I don't think they bring down the performance that much when they aren't running
Hey justIN I have heard that the r12 3090 version had some sort of bottleneck issues Can you explain? Reviews read that the performance does not go as standard to the 11th gen i9 and 3090..
With the Alienware, getting the low density (double-sided) ram gives you a ~15% boost to performance in all areas. So you were comparing a gimped version here. It comes with the low density ram if you get the 32GB version. Not sure why some ram options use high density ram. But it can also be upgraded by the user.
Yeah Jesse, I'm starting to do multiple tests with my reviews now with upgraded RAM to show people what new machines really are capable of with just a little more RAM love
@@jessestewart5109 interesting it would have been great if they listed this on their website when i specd the laptop out with my gf. It just says 3200 vs 3466 ram. Since shes using it exclusively for gaming i told her 16gb would be fine. Wasnt expecting a 15% performance difference from a few hundred mhz... :/
@@kernoleary1394 Yeah, it's really weird. 16GB is a very popular option and should come with low density too. But, even though it's annoying, you can upgrade very easily yourself in the future.
Hey Vallantine. For this video I just wanted to compare the specs that are the same so you can see which one does it better. These screens I felt were too different to compare properly for this video.
@@kernoleary1394 yes still waiting.....been absolute joke. Nearly cancelled the order twice but that isn't going to help the situation. My problem is the i9 proccesser 98k. I've managed to contact dell direct and find that out for myself.
You just randomly got recommended to me when I was searching Aphex Twin (what?) but this was a great comparison. I personally have a beef with MSI right now because the RTX 2080 in my flagship GT76 Titan died after 13 months (one month out of warranty), so I'd definitely consider Alienware next time. I'm waiting for RTX 4000 before my next big purchase though. Anyway, nice vid and I'm subbing for future content. Cheers.
I have the legion 7 2080 super same as what this video shows as having extremely good thermals. which is weird because my legion burned out about 1 month over a year. I started seeing problems with my graphics and cpu after only about 8 months of using it. so I knew it was likely going to burn out soon after. which it did. 2300$ this company wiped their ass with my money. but from my experience my legion got pretty hot, i couldnt run doom eternal, i gave up on that game after a few nights letting it get super super cold in my house during the winter and I could only play 20 minutes of that game at most and I couldnt get my cpu to be less than 80c to 86c. so I couldnt play doom eternal at all even when I turned the settings as low as i could. got to about lvl 3 and uninstalled the game, didnt want to trash my laptop. And it normally ran games like warzone and coldwar at around 74c to 81c and i tried to keep it lower but couldnt always get down below 80. too hot imo. im looking for a laptop that can do much better as far as thermals go. id like to run at 60c always. seems like even the best laptops of 2021 are even hotter and would priobably burn out much much faster than my legion. is laptop gaming actually a thing or is the industry a scam? ive been having a hard time keeping one running. And I cant get the information out of these fucking youtubers. and the information I do get, they all have wildy differing information and benchmarks. one youtuber will give thermals on a laptop being super good like in the 70c range and then another youtuber will give thermal readings on that same laptop that look way worse. seems like these youtubers fill the airspace and make it hard for consumers to get an accurate measure from any real voices out there, and they are extremely biased with trying to make sales probably. its hard to get a real dude whose used the pc for his own personal and just give us his run down. fuckn hate youtubers for this reason. theyre so full of shit and contradict each other on just about every facet of their reviews.
Justin , once again another great content. It is clearly showing that you are a hardworking person and care about videos that you're making , keep it up.👏 Do you have any idea of Dell's guarantee? Is it worth it to get their services? Your big fan from iran🇮🇷
Thank you Ali! I really appreciate that! I purchased a 3 year warranty/support from them when I got my m17 r3 but I personally haven’t had to use it yet so I’m not sure how good it is
@@JustinTechTips Thank You very much. In my country, there is a 800usd price difference between these two model. The Alienware M15R5 and Lenovo Legion 5 Pro are same price as the GP76, all same spec (rtx3070) . So these are my gaming laptop shortlist.
I recently jumped on the Alienware train from msi with a m15 r4. I absolutely love it so far. But the biggest deciding factor for me was dell's extended warranty. It's absolutely amazing.
Nice content Justin! Also I have a question, which laptop gpu is worth going for, rtx 3050ti or 3060 because I don't have stretched enough budget for 3070 and 3080 though. Another one is does Alienware still maintain its Area 51m lineup anymore?
Just about to get my x17 3060. From what i have read online, element 31 is not in 3060 configuration. Will there be any thermal difference in 3060 vs element 31?? 3060 might have been applied with ordinary paste.
Hey karma, think one of the reasons they don’t need better more expensive thermal paste on the 3060 is because it won’t get as hot naturally than the 3070 and 3080. I wouldn’t worry too much about thermal throttling with a 3060. At least not on a machine with great cooling technology like the x17. Just FYI the RGB touchpad is only available with the 3080 model
Hey Xiao. Both slots support Gen4 www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/alienware-x17-r1-laptop/alienware-x17-r1-setup-and-specifications/storage?guid=guid-d79f17ca-e619-43e7-82a5-a0b0e7fb5c0a&lang=en-us
Let's be real with the better cooling on the X17 if you enable the mux and throw a slight undervolt on the cpu you're looking at pretty much identical performance for gaming. Not to mention the lottery difference in your test units with high density ram on the X17 vs the low density on the raider. If it was apples to apples with low density on both, the X17 would probably be near identical out of the box.
I am curious what is the longevity of a gaming laptop? How many years will the SSD drive last before it needs replacement. What is the average user ownership before upgrading to a new machine?
Hey Zzgyy, I see a lot of people upgrading after 6 years just for a faster machine. I haven't actually heard of many people that have reached the end of their SSD lifespan before wanting to upgrade to something faster. An SSD has a limited amount of "writing" it can do, but it can "read" indefinitely.
Believe it or not, the first component that will break in your laptop will probably not be an electronic part, but a hinge, if you're not especially careful with them. They usually give in after a few years if you use them harshly. Electronics can survive more than a decade if you look after them. If you run your components near their max temps, you will shorten their lifespan. But if you keep them cool (~70c for cpu, ~60c for gpu) you should get at least a decade, probably more. But it will be way too slow to run anything meaningful by then, so you should have a budget to be able to upgrade every 4-5 years if you want to play games with your laptop. I would recommend going for a mid tier gpu like 3070, or max wattage 3060, because they're easier to cool. I got myself a legion 7i that runs very cool, and ram, ssd and wifi chip is upgradable. I think it's the winner of this year, if you care for build quality. The hinges should last at least until its time to upgrade :)
@@LeFatalpotato I agree. My old HP pavilion laptop from 2008 still works. Windows Vista lol. Great for windage gaming lol. $1500.00 laptop at the time.
It really depends on how you take care of your machine. I'm still using my GT70 Dragon from 2012. It's only this year that I am planning to buy a new gaming laptop, either the Legion 7i or the GE76, but the problem is the supply.
is thundebolt functional for egpu on the x17? Unfortunately for the ge76 the thunderbolt is hardwired to the UHD graphics, so current and future egpus will not work. Sad
Reading the comments should I hold off on the x17 and wait to see if they iron out the quirks? If so what's the average timeline for the upgraded versions between the release of the first version to the upgraded version?
@@JustinTechTips I bit the bullet and ordered the 3080 x17 r1 cuz I needed a new gaming laptop and 3d graphic design capable laptop for my electromagnetic physics courses. I can put that on my list UnDeRpiPse. I have a lot of them in the queue right now but sometimes if enough people request the same computer I move it ahead in the queue
MMORPGs tend to be more CPU heavy so the x17 would probably perform just as good as the GE76. You'll get more gaming out of the GE76 though. If I were you it would be the x17 but I know there is a big delay right now getting directly from Dell. You can save a little money and get the 3070 version which is almost as fast as the one that I reviewed from Best Buy as of right now bestbuy.7tiv.net/qnEezb
Hey Joe! Yes I think you will be a lot happier with that machine. However unless you are doing 4k editing or rendering I wouldn't waste your money on an i9. An i7 should be just fine
I wish I could but I've sent it back since then. Although in my live benchmarks video.. Those tests were with an external monitor during that stream so that is pretty close to how it would perform with a mux switch

Thank you,you helped me decide which laptop should I get, and i decided msi ge76 with qud display and 165hz.
Thanks bro ❤
Congrats MTJ! You are going to absolutely love that powerful BEAST!
My MSI GE72 is 6 years old and still works without any issues. I recently bought a MSI GE66 and couldn't be happier with it. Any other laptops that I've bought in the past from Dell, HP or Toshiba have died or had issues right after the end of the warranty.
That sucks Glenn. So your DELL only lasted a year?
@@JustinTechTips Yes I had 2 Dell Inspirion laptops for myself and my wife. My laptop had a power supply issue that failed before the warranty and was replaced but the second one failed a while later. My wife's Dell had screen issues after a year and could only be used with external monitor. I know the Alienware are built better but with my experience, I never wanted to try. My current work laptop is a Dell 5530 Precision with I9 and it constantly overheats even though it sits on a laptop stand. Disabling the turboboost was the only solution that worked.
Do you recommend to buy MSI GE66 ? or dell precision 3571?
I am contemplating getting an X17. They have a screen option for the 1920x1080 FHD 360Hz monitor of the UHD 3840x2160 4ms 120hz. I game primarily in addition to doing some work stuff, which does not include any form of rendering or content creation. Just wondering your take on it?
Great comparison! I don’t regret choosing the Alienware x17. Your channel is awesome! Best wishes!!
Thank you Ninja! 🙂
I would buy the MSI GE76, The Lenovo Legion 7 is also a beast for gaming.

There were multiple reviews and forums that mentioned the X17's RAM was slowing it down, just wanted to mention this.
Yeah it would be faster with dual sided RAM for sure. Still pretty dang fast though
I heard the 16 gb ram has high density while 32 ram up has low density ram
is this video done without the mux switch bios update for the x17?
Yeah Stefan, it was done without mux but I tested it with an external monitor which is basically simulating the same thing
The two are not much different from each other the choice is according to taste ... I prefer MSI GE76 I love this company
All 3 beasts will satisfy anyone who hasn’t upgraded for a few years but they definitely appeal to people in different ways
why not get the 4k screen? Im about to pull the trigger on the fully loaded model as well!
@@paulpatrulescu9976 is the loss of FPS that significant on 4k for FPS ??
@@steeveabitbol2466 the loss of FPS is pretty significant between the 4K display and the 1080p 360hz display if you really want all the competitive advantage in shooters. I’d recommend doing a little bit of research on the 4K … lots of info on here.

I talked about FPS but not ping

Does the side vents of both make yours hands hot on the side for both computers? And which one is hotter?

Hey Lego Guyver, no it did not
Among X17, GE76 and Legion 7, if you had to rank these based on overall perspective (performance, price, build, ergonomics, etc), how would you do it?
I think overall experience the x17 has my vote. The GE76 is just slightly faster with gaming but the x17 is faster with creative apps that I use more often
can use windows hello in MSI ge76? you didnt mention it
Hey Sina, you're right sorry about that! No unfortunately Windows Hello is not available with the GE76. It is on the Alienware x17 though

Did you switch the mux switch in the x17
How do we clean the keys on an Alienware if they feel sticky
These laptops gets really good when you reinstall Windows. All of that bloatware does a number on the system, even with those specs. Would be curious to see what your results are after that.
I would think just uninstalling the bloatware or not having it run would be sufficient enough. I don't think they bring down the performance that much when they aren't running
Here in italy, the upgrade for the cherry keyboard of the Alienware costs 100€. Is it worth? The default one is not good?
The default one is good, edoardo. But I just love the feel of the mechanical keyboard so much more

Hey justIN I have heard that the r12 3090 version had some sort of bottleneck issues
Can you explain? Reviews read that the performance does not go as standard to the 11th gen i9 and 3090..
Yeah the R12 was fast but not as fast as it should be. I believe it was probably due to the smaller custom version of the 3090 that the R12 uses

Cheers.
Thanks Killer Ra! Oh wow that's some bad luck right there. Sorry to hear that. I can't wait to get my hands on RTX 4000 machines!

X17 is bogos binted 👽
not sure what that means Andrew, but it sounds cool!
Yeah I wish I had better RAM at the time of this recording to test that theory out with
How many decibels fan noise on both laptops?
