I'm a skier by nature, but I also learned to surf before I was ten. Okay, so, it appears you are using what we call "the inside edge," On skis, there are two inside edges, but never mind, you call it a rail. So you're burying what would be my uphill inside edge, to turn, and that flat "ironing board" piece of balsa the other person was riding was also reminiscent of what the first surf boards must have looked like. They must have been driftwood, shaped by the sea, but later, people caught on how to shape the wood they found.
