I grew up in central Texas and Summer meant living on the lake shore with a tarp above, a driftwood campfire, and an army surplus cot for my bed (no sleeping bag, after all, this was Texas in the summer). I now live in Maine, am 72, almost completely crippled by arthritis; until recently I believed I only had my memories of camping and communing with nature as my actual camping days were behind me. But UA-cam and videos such as this allow me to vicariously enjoy adventures once more. Thanks Corporal!
Yessir, us old guys need you to help keep us going, even if it's vicariously! Dude! You and medium size dude are rocking it for us old guys! Can't always do what we would like to because of old age and worms, but we so enjoy your videos!!! Keep on rocking it, and let the " not " so medium size dude know how much we appreciate his involvement in the videos, he is so much appreciated !!!!!!!! 🙂
I'm living in the swamp wilderness of Florida, homeless from Michigan since last July and it's an inspiration to try different things while out here. At 65 years old I could feel sorry for myself but instead I know I'm doing what a lot of people wish they could do lol boondocking, rat hole money and buy some property, the corporal would be welcome to practice in my woods.
This reminds me of when my Dad and I went hunting in the Catskills. We had large army surplus tent, we stayed for two weeks! My Dad was a good hunter, most of the "Hunters" bought Dad's kills and passed them off as there's. We had a small stove made out of a grease gun drum and a old shopping cart. We told each other stories and had a grand old time. My Dad made me cut out of school for the hole two weeks. I miss Dad terribly. Check out the woods, it can be fun.
As if the dakota fire pit wasn't enough, that door hinge system was ingenious. Always, always learn something new. Thanks for your time and experience. Great video Corporal!!!
I know this is an old video Corporal but I always go back to watch what I found interesting. I think this might be one of my favourite videos that you've put up yet. I don't have a lot of clay here but I did the same concept in the woods and it really did work as good as you said it did on your video. I've been in much worse shelters than this in my life. Keep up the good work brother, cheers!
I have another one! Dashing through the woods! With some bacon in my pack! My tarp is nice an oiled, I'll make a fancy shack! I'll chop me up some logs, make fire of what's left We're gonna have outstanding time, the woods is fun A.F. Great outdoors, in the air! Fresh as it can be! Not a worry in my mind, happy cause I'm free! Great outdoors, in the sun, even in the rain! You can't lose in hiking shoes, you can only gain!
I LOVE IT! My boys had been hooked for the half hour i needed them to be settled an quiet! You cant imagine how much I gotten done with in that much needed quiet time. Plus starting dinner an them telling me about everything you just showed them! OUTSTANDING there sir!
It's amazing to me how much work you put into these videos. Not only do you you bust your hump to make whatever it is that, you happen to be building each installment. You still remember to change camera angles and get a lot of detail with the various knots and things. I personally would get so involved with the building aspect. I would completely forget about the camera shots. .. not to mention all the time editing. Good work sir. Good work.
Hello, never commented before. I have been watching for over a year, since I figure you actually know what your doing. My father, also a marine n army never got to teach me. I figure I would rather watch you. Also my grand daughter is serving as a corpsman in the Navy. Thanks for the videos, your cooking is the best!

I haven't done any camping yet since I've moved to Colorado, but with the way the winds get out here (even during times there aren't fire bans) I'd say a Dakota fire hole would be the way to go.
You have proven time and time again the basic skill set the Armed Services have instilled in you continue to grow. Plus you’re pretty smart and creative. Great job teaching us new methods
A simple lightweight and basically non flammable item I carry when in the bush is a 6 foot length of collapsible dryer vent tube. It compresses down to nearly nothing, can be buried and retrieved easily for a Dakota fire pit. Also have used hollow logs for same thing,as well as an easy rocket stove. I’m Canadian, and I used to go winter camping a lot when younger. Still do search and rescue.

You should come down here to Slidell, Louisiana. There's plenty of wilderness/swamps to shoot video in, and afterward you can come to my house for a true cajun boil. We fish, crab, and shrimp right from the back yard to catch our food.

Probably my favorite shelter of yours so far. I'm all about staying warm and toasty in the winter and your fire bowl would certainly make that happen. I appreciate all the hard work and endless skills shown. Keep up the outstanding work.
Watching you sharpen your knife, I just wanted to comment for anyone in general that if you sharpen your knife and it "feels" like one side is sharper than the other (and the number of strokes are the same on each side), it indicates you are probably (99%) rolling the blade on the not so sharp side. Super easy to correct once you know what's going on (just take a little more time with the strokes on that side and make sure you keep the alignment of the stone to the edge the same, no rolling).
Good stuff mate , You put in a big effort. Your digging stick reminded me of the digging sticks the Aboriginals use down here in Australia . One end is shaved flat and the other end is pointed then it is pushed under the coals of a fire to harden both ends. I like how you used what appears to be an emergency blanket to cover the roof. I guess over time one could cover the walls in with whatever and dig a drainage channel around it incase of heavy rain etc. Glad I subscribed to your channel I like stuff like this it keeps the mind active. Well happy New Year to you and yours and I look forward to viewing more of your content , Cheers from Australia :-).

As usual, your video was highly informative. Good Job!! 👍👍👍
Use a welding cloth to protect from sparks. Get 2, one for your air mattress, and one for your ceiling tarps. Love being back to watch you. Sad times for me. My brother and best friend passed with a heart attack. I hand been taking care of him after he had a stroke. He lost the use of his left side.
I really like that shelter. Just one question about the fire hole though... if you get really heavy rain, how would you stop the outside hole from flooding? If it gets real heavy, is it just a case of rigging up some sort of cover over it to help keep the rain off? Or would you go outside and dig it deeper so the rain could pool into a deeper hole?
Maybe you could put another clay rim around the hole like there is for the inside hole, and then put 4 small stones around the edge of the hole and balance a larger flat stone accross the top of them, so air can get in but water can't. It would have to be seriously heavy rain for it to be a problem though surely.
They are " little " for such a little while, jump on the chance to be, interact, do, with them while they want it. It can shape them into the adults you want them to be, the people who will take the lead in their country and lead in the right way.
For sure! My son loves doing stuff like this. We usually put in a few hours of work, then it's chow time. The last time we did that, I made my own tripod grill and we cooked and ate ribeye steaks with a mix of yellow potatoes, bacon, mushrooms, onions, garlic, and butter. Talk about mouth watering goodness! He's 10 now and always asks to go out on state land with me. Now my 3 year old copies everything I do, so I'll have another little bugger to take out into the woods. Kids grow fast and life is short so enjoy all that you can while you can!
Lol. Hey Corporal, you got 2 guys that left a comment that Think they were first. Do they know, that it doesn't matter? Lol. You guys didn't win a bacon sandwich or Anything. Lol.

They are " little " for such a little while, jump on the chance to be, interact, do, with them while they want it. It can shape them into the adults you want them to be, the people who will take the lead in their country and lead in the right way.
@@tk00903 That’s what it’s all about!! I couldn’t agree more!
Lol.
Don't really care..just for fun
If you served that meal in a fancy restaurant, it would be a top notch gourmet special. Wow did that look good. Excellent video.
Throw some leaves or something on that orange tarp before somebody sees it and rescues you.
