I believe you, very honest!! I really like the finger bananas I know exactly how they taste, grew up eating them, will not waste my money this, Reason I searched for a true review.

Hello. I am glad that you found this video and that you commented. In the video, it was the banana's first harvest. I suspected that it had to be much better. Earlier this month, I got another harvest. The bananas were MUCH BETTER.
In short, I would recommend growing this variety. It taste very similar to the finger bananas (though I would prefer the finger bananas.) It doesnt have vanilla flavor nor does it remind me of ice cream. Rather the texture is more pudding like.
I'll pin our comments so others many see. I took some video of this August's harvest and testing-- if it is at least a little bit watchable, I'll post it =P

In September 2016, we purchased a tissue cultured "Ice Cream" banana plant from Wellspring Gardens (Florida) and it arrived via post.
In this first tasting of our ice cream banana, I found that it was underwhelming. It did not have hints of vanilla that others have found; nor was it particularly amazing. The banana had subtle sweetness and flavor. The texture was denser than the supermarket variety but does eventually melt in your mouth for a custard like consistency.
If this is how an Ice Cream banana truly tastes, I would say pass it on it and plant something else. At the same time, if you have room and the resources, I always encourage that you give it a try for yourself.
We have another portion of the plant that is quite tall and I am looking forward to another batch of bananas to see if we can find ourselves bananas that taste like vanilla ice cream. (On the off chance that I did something wrong to this first batch.)

I appreciate the honesty. I'm growing one already and am glad you tempered my expectations.

With my blue javas I let them get far past yellow and they will turn a blueish color instead of the normal brown like regular bananas. And then it is soft like custard you could eat with a spoon

Thanks for sharing your notes! I found that they do get nice and soft when I let them go a little longer. I hope to have another crop next year to try again.

Brian, thank you so much for your honest reviews of the ice cream banana. I keep glancing at the giant luffa you are growing in your greenhouse. Wow!

I am amazed by how big the luffa is. The plants were started by one friend and we are growing these together for fun. I grew luffa once before but haven't seen them grow this big!

I strongly disagree with your opinion. I have Blue Java bananas. I couldn't eat or give away all my bananas until I figured out how to use them. I let them just turn black and then freeze them. I blend the frozen bananas with milk and vanilla extract. This really does make an awesome ice cream. Now I freeze all my bananas. None are wasted anymore.

Excellent, Brian. Your patience has paid off. Imagine having a machete in your garden tool arsenal. Ha!
I've been waiting about 5 or six years for a decent rhubarb crop. Maybe I'll try a banana instead. Lol

Thanks! Time has a way of passing. I had to double, triple check my my notes on when that banana was planted, lol. Maybe it will be time soon for your rhubarb to give a nice crop.

These Bananas look like they are Namwa bananas because they do knot have knuckles where they attach to the stalk. Just saying.

That is unfortunately not blue Java brother, blue Java is not knuckled like that at the hand connection to the stem, it is individually fingered and separated

Yes, definitely doesn't look like Blue Javas. Should have a cyan / turquoise shade and have some knuckles. I have some growing and doing very well in SoCal.

Next time, boil some green ones and eat it with your fried fish like a potato. Maybe it really needs to ripe more to enjoy it better? Great video, Brian.

Thanks for the suggestion! I don't think yo boil green banana. Eat with fried fish sounds delicious. I have been wanting a plantain banana plant. So maybe I will give this a try with the next crop. The texture is much better as it gets more ripe. I am hoping that the next crop will have more flavor.

Thanks for sharing this! I dont remember if I mentioned in the video that I had seen a video that was helpful to me to better identify whether our Ice Cream banana is a Blue Java or Nam Wah. That video is the one you mentioned. As of today, we have another blossom on the plant. This time much larger than the last. I hope to do another taste test!

Watched 10 seconds and it looks like you killed that banana tree

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  Рік тому +2

Yup, that was also the intention (sort of.) Bananas are part of the grass family (hard to believe.) After a stalk produces banana, it will no longer produce bananas. From the roots, it'll keep growing out new stalks. Cutting down stalks that have already fruited makes room for more.

I didn’t like them either. I got rid of all of mine after 3 years. They were so hard to remove completely.

I have another round of bananas and I looking forward to trying them again. Hopefully it'll taste a bit better. Either way, I plan on removing banana plants from that spot. Hopefully it wont be too painful.
