    Hey Jon, just some friendly advice: if you bring down the speed of your router when routing end grain, you’ll get little to no burn marks. Great build by the way!

      Thanks , good to know I honestly didn’t think of it… But will give it a shot next time.

    Those additional touches on the planter really transformed it from plain to wow.

    Nice work, Jon. I like the knobs on the feet. I built one that had a bottom slanted toward the middle for drainage. Thumbs up.

    Monkey Pod is almost indestructible. I used A LOT on Oahu. I'd recommend a really fine polish and wax in order to not worry about the water.

      I sprayed the first coat of shellac on it today and the grain is beautiful… Nice stuff!

      Thanks, Dany … looks good now but the sad truth about outdoor projects is they never look great for long… gut hopefully the teak oil will help it last.

    Hi Jon. Like the design of the planter. I have been following you for many years and have to say I was a little surprised you didn't sand of the burn marks as well as the pencil marks before finishing. Also running the router at a lover speed reduces the burn marks.

    • @JonPetersArtHome
      @JonPetersArtHome  Місяць тому

      Thanks for the heads up about the router speed… The planter will be outside and before you know it, it’s gonna look weathered… Figured we could consider the pencil and burn marks apprentice marks😂👍

    Really nice! I had no idea you can use white oak for outdoor projects. I used a piece of hickory as a base for a birdhouse once and it bowed like a banana.😆

    • @JonPetersArtHome
      @JonPetersArtHome  Місяць тому +1

      Yes 👍 most rails for split rail fences are made of white oak… The good ones that is… On the other hand red Oak is not good for outdoor use.

    You mentioned switching from oil to gas. Check out heatpump options as well. Might work for you and be a cheaper long term option.

    Hey John, I'm new to your channel. Google News brought me here with the video for your elevated garden bed. I'm trying to find the plans but can't find it. I looked on your website but this one was not on it. Love the project.

      Thanks! I picked them up from the local hardware store, but I’m sure you can find them in any of the home stores as well

    Great video! Thank you! You mentioned that when you use water based finish it kind of dulls the color of the wood. My question is, why would someone want to dull the natural color of the wood. Isn't the point of using wood to make that color pop as much as humanly possible?

    • @JonPetersArtHome
      @JonPetersArtHome  Місяць тому

      Thanks, I think most people use waterborne finishes because of the easy cleanup and less toxic. Waterborne finishes are also very strong when cured. My plan is to use shellac for the beauty and go over it with a waterborne finish for strength and durability.

    What is your choice of glue for gluing MDF Butt Joints, I'm rebuilding a cabinet that had used a 'Hot Glue'? and it failed.

    I downloaded the “plans”. Looks to be just one page featuring a few images of the completed planter. No details as to how to build it. Just the completed planter box with a few dimensions. No way to follow how to build it. Was that a mistake?
