- Mazda Mx5 Miata Valve Cover Restoration without Paint! The Valve Cover on my 1995 Mazda NA Miata was looking a little ugly due to years of oxidation which caused some deep pitting. Since I didn't have time to powder coat it, I decided I should make it look as good as possible!
First, I took the cover off and disassembled the whole thing. Then I hit it hard with degreaser, the power washer, and hot soapy water. From there, I took it over to NWC Blasting to get Vapor Honed. It came out pretty good, but after some more rubbing with steel wool and a little polishing, it came out as good as new!
I then show you how to properly install the valve cover on your NA / NB Mazda Miata with the proper torque sequence. Enjoy!

I appreciate your detail and clear camera focus and exposure.. best valve cover video on youtube. In the middle of doing my 99 Miata cover ! Thanks
Well explained and super helpful video! Thank you :)
Just seen this Ryan...sorry for the late like...
Powder coat aluminum, wrinkle black, or wrinkle red like the Mazdaspeed Miata. The wrinkle red would be a nice contrast on a black Miata.
Did you take the "baffle plates" underneath the valve cover out to clean underneath them from possible sanding dust? I was thinking of doing this next winter and just heard some horror stories about metal dust getting underneath those and then making their way to the engine with the oil pressure.
Ty for this! Question: apparently prev owner of my 73k mi 95m just replaced vc gasket. I just replaced plugs/wires the other day and it appears small vc leaks at 2 plugs. Plugs dry/not oil fouled fortunately. Think i can loosen all my vc bolts and re torque in order to spec to see if that remedies b4 replacing again? Thoughts? Ty!
Lucky you didn't blow a coil pack or two, good on ya for not driving it like that. My vote is silver powder, and do the intake too.
You put all that time into the cover, i would keep it like that.. looks nice man
What is the valve cover made out of ? Is it a good idea to grease it a bit to protect it?
If it were me i would have used a rag and long screw driver to soak up the oil so it didnt go all over the pistons
When you took spark plug 4 out did you get water in your engine internals??
I've heard steel wool can embed into metals and then rust leaving stains, scotch bite is better I believe
I've been waiting around 2 months for hks sport exhaust... waiting for cool parts is the worst lol.
What is that cold air intake? Which brand?
I’m got a vapor honing ad😂😂
Also kinda sounds like theres a vacuum leak
Wrinkle black for the valve cover!
18 minute video titled how to restore your valve cover, and more than half of it is dedicated to putting the thing back together. Of the rest of it, the actual restoration of the valve cover is covered by vapour blasting that you didn’t even show!? Bad video naming dude, might have been happy to watch it if I wasn’t completely different to what I was expecting :/
Gloves save your hands. Get box of 100.
The idle speeds too high. It should be around 850 RPMs. Yours is up to about 1200 RPMs
