    Level 3a is a pistol armor rating. While the RTS shield is incredible for exceeding that rating, it isn't really fare to compare them based off of rounds they aren't either one really rated for. In my opinion, would be more interesting to see these compared using common pistol rounds and shotgun loading, then the rifles separately with the understanding they exceed the rating.
    A second video series showing the actually rifle rated Level 3 products from both companies would then be interesting

      It was obviously bias from the getgo. For some odd reason they were glorifying steel armor (horrible armor as a consensus in the industry) while trying to diss a lightweight extremely affordable armor that if it performs as rated, would be an unbelievable deal. You can always buy an expensive UHMWPE armor

    The full arm they make would be awesome to see what the rounds will do to your elbow to shoulder joint. Also that bottom edge torquing from the round impacting it could even break your forearm. but you would only be able to hold it up by the arm not the wood.

    The science is so heavy in this episode. I love it. I think people forget even with shields or bulletproof vests you will still get hurt- some movies show that well, but many just make it look like you can take 20 rounds, and be fine with no bruising or other damage

    The experiment is flawed, though: it's the wooden frame that is absorbing the hits, not the "arm" which is just hanging. This is different from the actual situation where a person is holding the shield with their forearm - in that case the forearm has to absorb all the energy from the moving shield.

    • @GoingBallistic
      @GoingBallistic  Рік тому

      And we have another volunteer for holding a shield in a video for us. WOW, that's like 3 people now.

    • @ShellShock794
      @ShellShock794 Рік тому

      @@GoingBallistic Maybe instead of insulting your viewers for pointing out facts, you could admit your method was flawed and redo the experiment where you attach the arm to a single board and attach the shield to the same board so that it's like a sandwich with the arm in the middle. Also, don't use too wide of a base, you want the stand/target to wobble a bit with each shot

    • @jantschierschky3461
      @jantschierschky3461 Рік тому

      The arm can easily absorb energy, so frame or not makes little difference. Key be deformation or penetration

    I know it takes a lot of work, but it would be cool to have the shield on a spring/rubberband braced bracket, so we could compare the knockback to a hard puch or front kick.

    • @tbthedozer
      @tbthedozer Рік тому

      I was thinking something similar, like having a scale, strain gauge, or accelerometer on the shield to see what the relative impacts look like graphed out one to another. I think we forget about even though we calculate the energy of the projectile it was accelerated in a firearm someone was holding. True, there are some tricks to lessen felt recoil but in general the bigger the kick the bigger the hit, against something solid anyway.
      I think that the 17 pound RTS shield might absorb more of that projectile energy then we give it credit.
      I won if something couldn’t be farmergineered (crafty, inexpensive, and some relatable results) where we do like you say with some bungee cord stock for resistance and a piece of polystyrene foam insulation holding 3 or 4 yard sticks in place and as some friction to keep them from sliding beyond what the plate pushes them and average the movement of them to get the redneck punch factor equivalent?

  • @Qualnias
    @Qualnias Рік тому +2

    Haven't even seen your first shot... But... If you want to gauge how much damage the arm would get from a non-penetrating shot... You have to have the arm hold the shield, not the shield holding up the arm.
    Meaning, you would need more than just the forearm, and you would have to strap up the upper arm to your rig, the forearm to your shield, then shoot the shield.

    • @GoingBallistic
      @GoingBallistic  Рік тому +1

      Cool, I guess we have a volunteer for holding the shields in the next video.

    • @wowzzier1802
      @wowzzier1802 Рік тому

      I noticed this as well. It's a good video but the braces holding the shields take most of the force from the rounds. Did you see the second 500 shot knock the brace clean off and splinter the wood? All that energy would have been transferred to the arm if it wasn't for the brace stopping it first.

    • @GoingBallistic
      @GoingBallistic  Рік тому +1

      Well guys this is all we had to work with. I guarantee that there was a lot of energy that was transferred straight through into the arm. No not all but a lot.
      Having worked in the armor vehicle industry it pretty amazing to see how energy is transferred through materials.

    Long videos are fine, however your testing rig is not.
    It's an unrealistic test because the shield is fully supported in steel brackets. When the round hits, the energy is being dumped into the brackets and not the arm (which is why at the end, the wood shattered where it was being held in by the bracket).
    You have to remember when you are holding the shield, your arm is ridgid and the only support for the shield.
    In order to run a fair test, you would need a Newton Force scale that registers impacts placed behind the shield and see what each round is hitting at. From there we can then test how much force it would take to shatter human bones.
