I rented a seeder to over seed our pasture during one of the wettest month's of the year. Bad idea?

- The seeder was $80 a day to rent. It's a little beat up, but I think it will work.

We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acre homestead. We just finished building our log cabin in 2018. Now we are focused on trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey we continue to develop our homestead and farm, while becoming more self sufficient.

For your predator grate on the culvert. Put in on the downstream side with a hinge so it opens during high flow, and falls back against the culvert when no water is pushing it open.
This was going to be my suggestion as well.
Aye called a flap gate and also put Rip Rap to keep the washout from happening.
Thx. I have really enjoyed this playlist of 80 videos on developing your land. I want to thank you for the time you have taken to organize your channel. It helps the viewer target the things they are interested in. I normally don't write long comments , I just put Thx. I heard if you get a comment and a "like" you get paid more so that's why I do it, also watch ads until 30 seconds so you get paid. I hope others will take the time to support your great channel!!!! You should consider starting a patron page to get donations to help with expenses.
Farming is full of lessons. The wise farmer has made the most mistakes. Keep up the good work
Your turkeys are the coolest. No video would be complete without an appearance 😜
Evan one of the best fertilizer's for grass is Steer manure, You have 3 steers who have to be leaving paddies, get out your pitch fork and pick them up place them somewhere to dry out, chop them up and spread over where your trying to get the grass to grow almost overnight results
Great job showing and telling, learning I am I think I’ll get a seeder like what you got there and do my field. That surely will help make the field look better, well thanks for showing telling see ya next time see ya bye.
I enjoy the drone footage
if you drive two post on the low side of the culvert take the panel & hinge it between them when the water comes through the pipe the panel will raise to let the water out & close when it stops & keep the animals out ( less cleaning ) Send that rain to Texas we could use it
Like the video Evan .
Always inch forward as you lift implements from a trailer to protect trailer and implements from damage.
You need what is called a rat grard for your pipe. It going inside the exit of the pipe and will kick up if debris is going through the pipe so it does not clog up. And when things try to go the opposite way it lays down so they can’t get through.
A chain harrow pulled behind implement ( rotary cutter, seeder, etc) will spread cow piles in field.
The culvert needs to be sized based on the amount of surface area of the drainage basin, ground cover type, and the rainfall frequency charts for your area. Putting the barrier hinged on the outlet end of the culvert as a previous commentor suggested is a great idea.
I as a farmer always want everything done in straight line just my way of doing
Yeh, we've been getting a ton of rain down here in north Florida lately. Nice to see the drone shots again!
I would double up on the critter grate on the upstream side, First grate would catch majority of crap before it gets to the second grate. This would let water to run thru the culvert and not get plugged up.
For your grate cloggin problem at 12:15 in the video, your problem looks like weeds catching on the paneling and restricting the input flow to the point where it overflows. Your easiest solution is to place two or three extra panels just a few feet upstream, possibly angled so water will flow over them easily if they become clogged. That way those will be the ones that catch *most* of the weeds before it clogs the culvert panel. You will still have to check and clear them on a regular basis, but your culvert won't clog quite as quickly.
good job. now to see it grow. please update us in a few weeks. good flying that drone Rebecca
dig a hole deeper before the culvert like a sump to stop the culvert blocking up
Really like that lil' TYM Tractor.....Nice....
Happy Easter, everyone!
I used to build and assemble those seeders at Woods in Illinois
When do think this seeder was made. It isn't a current model. It is an str72-2.
@@CountryViewAcres they started rolling out their line of seeders while I was working there so probably around 2012 or 13 the first ones came out like this, the new ones are super nice and much more efficient, you should reach out to them being a local Illinois guy they might let you have one to test or keep. They have ones now with discs before the cultipacker, with multiple seed boxes designed for food plots
I’m stoked to see the progress on the hay fields. Every time I see a notification my fingers are crossed lol
Whenever we put in culvert pipes, we dig a small hole before and after the entrance and exit, then line it with 6-8'' rip rap. It slows the water down before and after and also eases washouts. Great video.
If I had a backhoe I would dig out an area in front of the culvert.
One of the advantages of that machine is that it aerates your turf. That has to be a plus if you have any thatching or compaction
Tractor is compacting the fudge out of it and overseeding is a short term solution gor short sighted numbnutters
Need a check valve plate on that culvert
She looks a little soft but Looks like it will work
You should post a video of you just cutting grass. It's surprisingly enjoyable for some reason. Some of the early outdoors with the Morgans videos of Mike just cutting grass was great.
With the tractor?
@@CountryViewAcres
Any which way. You have some bush hogging videos but I can't remember you cutting you actual grass at the house 🤷🏻♂️
It snow up here in north west Ill today . It isn't over till nature saids .
I hate when I rent stuff and it is old and does not work well. Renter a wood splitter last winter. broke 2 times on the week end. Second time it was a hydraulic hose that shut us down completely. Company still wanted full price for the 2 days.
Move the Grate to the other side of the culvert...
The seeder will really help that pasture come back to life and the seeds you planted should do really well with the combination of seeds.
Might have been a little less “sketchy” if you’d have lifted it high enough to clear the trailer bed then drive the trailer out from under it.
As far as your culvert clogging, maybe it wouldn't clog as easy if it was made of only vertical rods? 🤷♂️ Something kind of like this -> ||||. Kind of like you see in road drains and stuff. You could weld up a frame with vertical lengths of rod and use that instead of square fencing. Come to think if it, maybe if the frame was put in so the rods were positioned horizontally it would work even better? I don't know, just spit ball'n here... lol.
I think you installed that panel in wrong side, bei the way that's a nice turkey 👍🏻🥃
line the up stream side of the culvert, sack Crete fast setting kind ,chuck of plywood block the flow for a min,you need a down stream gate, swings up for easy cleaning, hand crank seeder for wet spots, nice work!!
I’d recommend putting some fertilizer down on the pasture ground too. And like others have said a gate or solid sheet on the outlet side of the culvert would work awesome!
Another good video. There is always work to do on a farm. I love that turkey❤️
Can’t wait to see the results. I’m especially excited to see the new hay field! Have a good day brother 🤙
Hey Evan you need a few weeks of good old Sunshine
That seeder looks like it may have come over on the Mayflower... (:-D
Great job
Now you need to get out a broadcast spreader and toss some lime and fertilizer on the seeded areas. Make that seed pop with new growth.
Happy Easter God bless!
90 K subs congratulations, almost to reach 100 K, regards and HAPPY EASTER, FELICES PASCUAS.
A wooden pallet placed on forks before the straps would prevent implements from sliding down forks into tractor grill if forks lift too high. Chance of sliding down forks increases with wet forks. 👍
The self leveling loader keeps the forks nice and level. And I took it slow. I know it isn't the ideal way to pick it up.
Your farm is coming around I can’t wait for the hay season to see how the new to you haybine works out for you
Put the wire on the other end of the pipe
And mount it on a hinge so it will flip open and closed when the water is flowing.
Nice job
Hey Evan Happy Easter it's so pretty out there you and Rebecca have a great evening enjoy watching your video. 👍❤😇
Put the pipe guard on the other end
Good video and Byron is a great seed company
Just an idea. Could you put the fence panel at culvert on other end of culvert to perfect predators. Maybe it would help it not clog as easy??
You should charge rental company,u fixed their stuck regulator. My dad would hand spread grass seeds on wet areas.Always did well.
Good video I like the seeder wish I had one good job
Good video
When working, that looks like a good seeder/aerator. I'm interested to see how well the pasture comes back. The tom turkey is funny. Great video as always. Better than what most professional videographers can do.
At 03:04 I bet it's two to four pounds per 1,000 sq. ft., not per acre. That'd be great though! 03:26 shows the chart.
Evan, your videos have inspired me over the past few years and I too recently bought a 60 hp tractor. I tried to get a TYM but my local dealer didn't have anything in stock so I went with Kioti. That being said, you really need to put your rear remotes to good use and get a hydraulic top link. They are not very expensive and are great to be able to make your adjustments like you did early on from the seat of your rig.
I thought seed would last forever, but it does not. I had rye that would not germinate at all after a few years old. I hope you have better luck.
Nice camera work while in the pasture Evan. Enjoy your videos.
Always enjoy watching your posts. Happy Easter!
Always great content! Never-ending jobs but you are knocking them out! Good job.
Really enjoyed watching...Thanks for taking us along....snow in Iowa Easter Sunday...Take care...Keep your videos coming....
Hello will have to see how it turns out. Hope you have time remember Jesus Christ. Have a great evening
Looking forward to seeing it grow! I’m sure it will work well for you.
Nice work
Love the idea of using this seeder.
Fence panel on the out flow side 👍
The spikes (aerators) will help not only to aerate the ground bot allow for good seed placement. Also if you want to also spread some soil amendments etc
Great job keep it up
Enjoy your videos . Thanks for sharing.
You probably saved a lot of money by buying the seed last year. I usually try to seed ever year but don't think I want to pay the high price this year in our area.
Fantastic work as always keep it up
I have a question for Rebekah and one for Evan:
REBEKAH I heard you mention on one episode that you make soap. Is that a facial and beauty soap and do you have plans to sell on your website shop? (You have a perfect production area in the basement).
EVAN: I've been hoping to see a grape arbor by your garden. Do you plan to plant grapes?
Thank you both. Love your show and what you've done with your property.
Going to be good grazing this year.
it seems everyone I watch seem to get too much seed down with that type of seeder. All in the fun of learning a piece of equipment. Looks like it worked out well for you in the end though. Hopefully we get to see it later this summer.
On the culvert, would it be possible to put the fence wire on the outlet with some kind of hinge? That might keep it from plugging up and still keep animals out?????
Spend the money on a live center link...You'll never go back. ; )
Depends on what kinds of predators you are trying to keep out. Seed should still be good, after only a year
Great video sharing
Hopefully you have a good hay year. From what I read hay is going to be scarce this year.
I honestly think you should of used the seeder on the case or your dad's jd 1r as even though you got a cab using that on the tym is that the tym is quite over kill for the seeder (I mean if it works it works. Also Google hates tym and auto correct turns it into tum or time)
Should help
Job well done Sir.
The clutch on the tractor is very rough or is it the footclutch? :-D
Great work hopefully this will bring a lush pasture. Anyone know what kind of seeder this was?
Hey Evan--just wondering if you have ever taken the loader off that tractor? I take mine off frequently for instance when haying or mowing pasture. It is so much easier to maneuver with it off and you can get closer to fence lines etc. Also--will you be giving us an update on the new hayfield? Great channel!
I haven't taken the loader yet. I plan to an update on the hay field soon. Everything is greening up and starting to grow.
I thought overseeding was suppose to be done in the fall.
!
Can you put the grate on the other end of the culvert
Can’t you have a flap that the water opens and it closes when there is no water flow?
Your tractor is fantastic! My wife and I intend to get two TYM’s; 354 and 594. Did you just rent the seeder for a day or weekend? Keep up the good content.
Day rental. $80
@@CountryViewAcres a lot better Than buying one
Hi Evan, How did the pasture turn out with that seeder? I am thinking about using the same type of seeder for my land.
What happened to the old Case tractor? I remember you taking about selling it, but I don't remember you ever saying if you did sell it or not.
I still have it. It needs the power steering rebuilt.
Put your screen on the other side
Yeah David and I'm thinking maybe a hinged screen on the other end with a strip of metal on it that will be lifted with a heavy water flow to help keep it clean of debris. It's worth a try anyway.
U going to make grass bales for your stock ?
👍👍
Put you some old tires around that culvert area...
Did you calibrate it?
When are you going to unplug the backup beeper on that tractor?
I know it's a annoying, right.
👍👍❤
