  • How To Eliminate Green Algae in the Orchid Pot
If you have a transparent plastic pot, it’s more than probable that at one point or another, you’ll have green slime growing on the sides of the pot. The green algae in orchid pots are not harmful to your orchid, but it’s best if it wasn't there.
How do you properly eliminate the green algae from the orchid pot? The solution to killing algae is simple: block the light. Place your transparent pot inside a solid pot, with no light. The roots will live long enough for the lack of light to kill off the algae, and you can have a nice-looking pot again.
Another way to eliminate the emerald green algae and the green slime from inside your pots is watering with hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide will convert the water back into hydrogen and oxygen, providing more air presence and circulation in your plant. Just don’t pour the hydrogen peroxide directly onto the roots. Dilute it first.
Do green algae hurt the orchid? Algae don’t feed on the roots and aren't parasitic to the orchid, so in this sense, it doesn’t harm your orchid. Algae feed on the waste products form the orchid, too.
Yet, when it starts to decay, it lowers the pH in the orchid pot, turning the medium more acidic. This decomposition is a perfect habitat for other bacteria, which leads to fungal growth.

Hi maam Amanda thank you for sharing expertise in removing algae using that solution... Can I ask the exact ratio in preparing the solution for watering especially the hydrogen peroxide? Thank you

Hi Amanda, in one video I’ve seen somebody using Physan 20 against algae in lecca. Ones a month he fills the pots of his orchids with this solution and leaves for one hour. The lecca in this video seamed perfectly clean.
Sinds yesterday I’m busy with the idea to try it on sphagnum.

Hi Iveta, Physan 20 works well with Algae too and it is more powerful. I don't know if I'd use it that long (1 hr) or that soon (1 month), but he knows his growing conditions and if it works for him, then why not? Since I use a lot of sphagnum moss, in my conditions it would be too much. I certainly would try once with a few orchids and see what happens.

Interesting idea like hydrogen peroxide actually probably more so it is used in the aquarium Hobby. I don't know if we reach for it so much for algae in that world but as it is safe for fish in reasonable doses I can see how it might have its uses in the Orchid world as well.

Amanda ... your video is quite timely, considering the climate I live in - algae is KING!! I tried using the hydrogen peroxide a few weeks ago, and it worked on some roots - others it was as though the algae was stuck to the roots. I made a pact with myself that I would "treat" the algae every two weeks, then see what gives.
Next question ... I have two young phals, and the bottom of their plastic pot is DARK with algae! I am hesitant to repot, as I do not want to interrupt their "baby" lives. The pots are in the shade, but get bright sunlight - but these days our humidity is quite high, and will get worse with the upcoming hurricane season. Should I put them inside? (I have a lot of windows where a lot of sunlight comes in). Or keep them in an even more shadier spot outside? (Phalaenopsis, oncidium, lockhartia).
Funny thing though, my dendrobiums and epidendrums are in full morning sun ... NO ALGAE THERE!! (These get direct sunlight from around 6:45 - 7AM till about 10:30 AM) I give ALL the orchids a one minute soak every other day (you should see the oxygen bubbles!)., except when we have a heavy rainy downpour. So far, none have perished!! I don't think I can subject the phals, etc., to such direct sun treatment.

Hi Lyn, I also think the sun would be too much for the Phals. If the algae just stays in the bottom, it would be ok. As long as it doesn't take over the entire pot, my suggestion would be too leave it. When hurricane season starts, try to keep them in a closed outer pot where no sun gets to the roots. As long as the leaves are in a bright place, that should work.

What if I'd cover my transparent pots with something dark? Would that kill the algae or is it just a waste of time, I wonder.

Hi Amanda, what about the green moss that grows over the medium, especially coconut husk. Are they also like algae?

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  2 роки тому +1

Hi MK, the green moss is actually okay to leave. It won't hurt the orchid. It is a sign. just like algae, that the growing conditions are good.

What what about cyanobacteria on mounts you can’t cover up? Is hydrogen peroxide the only solution? Because I have many springtails I’d like to keep alive as they are helpful
