For the giveaway mentioned in the video, just comment "I want a tracker" or anything similar to that. I'll be getting in touch with the first five to redirect you to an email address. The good thing about commenting on a brand new channel is that your chances to get Orchid Journey are pretty high. LOL. So please comment. :) As for the orchid pots that I use in this video, I buy them on Amazon. They come in a pack of 6 pots, 2 of each size, and cost around 2 US$ a pot, which is pretty good in my opinion. You can see them by clicking on this --> amzn.to/2O3XdZg It is an Affiliate Link, so If you buy it, I get a tiny commission with no extra cost to you.
As a relatively new orchid grower I have found your videos exceptionally useful. I have already watched hours and hours of other people's and just discovered you and learned more from you than many hours of the others. Thank you for all you do.
Of all the videos I've watched about orchids, you've provided the best in terms of a balanced presentation of information about how to care for orchids. My wife and I have a beautiful pinkish purple Phalaenopsis that we've had for a few years. It started blooming last winter and hasn't stopped. Thank you for your expertise and I will definitely start watching your channel!
I was just planning to start searching for an orchid journal to purchase when I watched this video! Cheering you on and can’t wait to see your product when it’s finished. Thank you so much!
Thank you I’ve learnt so much already. I just moved to central Australia, in the house we bought I found orchids growing everywhere in pots, on trees, on rocks, in the shade, in full sun. I am know learning how to identify them and about their requirements, thanks to you. I did notice that your phalaenopsis orchids have very upright leaves mine are more droopy but it still has healthy glossy roots growing and healthy leaves, not sure why that is. 🙏🏼
I really enjoyed your video. You gave so much information that I hadn’t heard before. I was just going to repot and now I know just how to mix it together. I would love to have one of your orchid planners. It makes sense to keep track.
Thank you. I am doing a bit of spring care for my indoor plants and I just wanted to see if I could wing a good repotting medium for my little moth orchid. I think I'll let it be for now until I can find something made for it :)
I used to use bark but I found that it simply decomposes too fast, so I swapped to coco chips instead. Works like a charm, holds a good amount of moisture and the roots have totally exploded with mine after I swapped. I also put just a tiny amount of moss on top.
I would love an orchid tracker journal. Over time I have definitely seen and adjusted what has worked in my environment for my orchids. It’s fascinating how each orchid is so unique in their own needs, being slightly different from each other. I enjoyed this video so much. ❤️ I love how your personality is so genuine. You will be so honest about any topic, especially what to watch out for and reassuring … ,”if you see this, no, just walk away from that orchid at the store.” 😅💕
If you go to the supply store for pond supplies you can get different sizes of the material for the filters that works well for mounting orchids on. They sell the same thing marketed for plants but its cheaper from pond supply.
Was thrilled when I saw you were launching a UA-cam channel, as I loved reading your articles. I do keep a rough diary, with all my orchids growth patterns, flowering times etc. I find it really useful with regards new root development for repotting or mounting, which I do a lot of. Your diary sounds like a great idea and I would love one.
Hi Cindy! Wow, thank you for that comment. You made my day! :) You are the 3rd person to comment, so the tracker is yours! Exactly. I have failed with phals but my last 2 are doing well. I have tried 3 mediatypes. The last one is now great. It rains so muct in my location so they are under the eaves and get sun in the morning. They are in clear pots. They are in bark and charcoal with pebbles. doing well.

Still please let me know 👍🏼😊
Love the video. I am a newbie. I have tried to maintain regular Phalaenopsis, Orchid but did not do well. I just bought a mini, and am trying again. Would love to get a journal! Please keep the videos coming...I am depending on them! Thank you!
I just got my first orchid yesterday! I took my girlfriend to a nursery so she could find herself a new plant and I got inspired to take care of my own and this has been a huge help! I’m even more excited to go on this journey now that I have more information thank you!
Hi Renate, I think you meant it would be good for Anthony and his girlfriend to go through this together, (since he wrote that answer) and not me and my girlfirend. :) The only significant other in my life is my cat, Midnight. LOL
Hi again ... My go-to potting media are charcoal and a smooth aquarium pebble (looks like marble), and so far, so good - I'm sticking to it as it works for me. I make my own ventilated pots using soda bottle bottoms or clear plastic containers. I use a hot "etcher" to burn the holes. Did it on MS excel. I still have to work out the watering/fertilisation "sheet". I hope i'm successful in getting one from you. The "tea" soaker seems to be working wonders - I have keikis popping up and new roots galore!! There are subtle signs of flower spikes *fingers crossed. As usual, you are my "guiding star" whom I love to follow. Thanks!!
Hi Lyn! Charcoal and pebbles work great together. Lots of air for the roots and quick drainage. I imagine it's pretty humid most the year (except for the next few months, right?) so that works perfectly. And I am so happy to say that you are the 5th person to comment, so the tracker is yours! Please send me an email at Amandamatthews@orchideria.com (the anti spam won't highlight it all because it doesn't like emails, but its the whole email not just the part in blue) and mention that your Lyn and I'll email you back.
Remember the keiki that broke off and i put it in moss in hopes it would sprout roots??? Still...no roots but now i have 2 green things starting to come through the base where the roots should be, kinda looks like flower spikes but too early yet to tell..and the other keiki thats still attached, NO roots either but a flower spike! Also, the host mother plant has 2 flower spikes lol. Thought you would find it interesting or funny. Anyway, another great video! Excllnt info, always useful, i always learn something to. 👍👍👍 P.s. i was writing and listening, and u talked about a tracker! Thats such a great idea. Yep. I want a tracker. Especially for that freak orchid i have lol..congrats whoever wins tho.
Hi Peacemaker! Let's hope that those 2 new growths are roots. *fingers crossed* I guess that orchid is just having a great time growing and doesn't know when to stop. Thanks for the update!
Hi I love your videos! I am interested in your journal. My orchid is having some issues and I am watching your videos to correct the care of it and bring it back. I have learned a lot in the few videos I have seen. Thank you!
I live in Florida and I just replanted my swan with orchid bark and I put a little moss on the top. I found a new pot with holes all around it. I would told at home Depot that it's a good way to plant it. How often should I water it . Because it's in the back mix. I have other orchards that I planted with moss and it isn't growing. Any idea. I love your videos. Thank you. 🙏
Thanks for all your tips!!😱😱 I’m so interesting to know more about and how to take care of them. There so beautiful in from Houston it’s really humid here.. Blessings!! I will like to have a tracker!!
Hi Edith, Thanks you for commenting on my channel. I appreciate it. 🙏 As for the tracker, I've already launched it. You can take a look at it here, which is a page on my website ( orchideria.com/orchid-journey ). I wish you the best and hope the heat isn't too bad in Houston. Stay safe!
Thanks for the info God bless you fantastic idea Im from south Africa bye your kitty is cute mine was 6 years old he was bitten by a snake and passed on I miss him a lot he looks same like your kitty
I really appreciate your channel. Wish I'd found it before I used hydrogen peroxide, which was recommended highly by another channel, on my phalaenopsis orchid roots. They are so badly damaged. Idk what I should do now. They keep drying out no matter how much I water them now. I really regret using it now! I watched your video that spoke about hydrogen peroxide and what it should really be used for, and how orchid roots are not one of them. Thank you for your well researched advice!
Hi B. Humphires, I'm so sorry to hear about your orchid. You can try several different methods just to keep the humidity high, since the roots will be compromised. One is a sphag-n-bag method, but in your case, don't use the bag. Just lay the orchid roots on top of humid sphagnum moss, so the leaves can be hydrated at all times. You can watch a video about that here: ua-cam.com/video/2_XuaHuG4L8/v-deo.html New roots will grow so your orchid isn't totally gone. There is hope!
Hi, Mahmood. Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it. 5 people already commented before you, and I don't have anymore trackers. If someone doesn't send me there address or changes their mind, I'll get in touch because your are the 6th.
Thank you for sharing all your tips , great tutorial, nicely explained. 👍 . Hope to see more of your videos. May I ask, can you use aloe water to water orchid once in awhile? Thank you 🙏💕
Hi Jerry! Thank you for watching. Keep me posted about the temperature drop, because I'm curious to know when your orchid will start producing spikes. :)
Hi Denise, The same principles apply, but with a little different angle. Since cymbidiums are semi-terrrstial, they need a little different potting medium. I wrote this article orchideria.com/the-best-potting-medium-for-cymbidium-orchids/ but I haven't made a video about it yet. I hope that helps.
Hi Amanda, Ops, I wrote the comment before watching the whole video. I have two questions; 1- Is "Clay Pebble" a good medium for my orchids? 2- How safe is the water culture for orchids (5 days in water, 2 days dry)? Thanks
Clay pebbles or LECA will work as long as they don't compact all the space around them. There needs to be some air pockets. If you can find clay pebbles that are all the same size, that works well. Mine tend to gather a lot of residue from the fertilizer, so Ive backed away from using them. As for water culture, 5 days seems a bit long. I prefer the other way around, 5 days dry and 2 in water. But that will depend on your growing medium, temperature, humidity, and so many other things. It's best to test different methods to see what works for you.
Greetings from the Philippines Ive enjoyed your videos n been growing orchids for just 10 years now. Maybe youcan show or talk about putting holes into orchid pots for air circulation? I am not gardening anymore since my stroke n i miss my kids terribly 😟😟i had some 100 orchids mostly vandas n Cattleyas. I had to retire from work due to chronic nerve n back pain in 2010.moved to Asia looking forward to my retirement n gardening. But in late 2017 stroke 10 days in hospital.
Hi Michael, Thank you for the comment! I appreciate it. Phillipines! Wow! I've been admiring Malaysia for a while now as a future expat option and as soon as the covid restrictions lift, I'm going to take a look. I'll add the holes in orchid pots to my list of videos to make. Thank you for the suggestion. :)
Thank you for good Information about Orchids... My Cattleya becoming more in one pot... My question is, can i separate it to two pots?... I coming from Germany... God Bless your Chanel 👍👍👍
Hi Cornelia, Germany, wow! Yes you can divide you Cattleya as long as there are at least 4 pseudobulbs on each side. Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it.
Do the roots really need light, because they don’t photosynthesy as the leaves do. Wouldn’t air circulation be more important? That just made more sense to me. Great info!
Hi Frank, yes, they do need light. The roots won't photosynthesis as much h as leaves will, but they still do contribute. That's why the roots in the middle of the pot are yellow, because where no light is reaching, there is no need for chlorophyll. Air circulation is just as important or even more than light. The roots won't die if they don't have light, buy they will if they don't have air.
Hi Diane, Thank you for watching my video. If you have a phalaenopsis, I suggest watering it every 7 days. That's a starting point and adjust it either to a shorter drying out period or a longer one, due to your growing conditions. I made a video that better explains this idea, and you can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/V8mTJoHblLQ/v-deo.html I wish you the best with your orchid and take care!
My name is Eyad Maqdassy, I was fond lately with the LECA pellets, and I repot 2 of mine using only LECA. The attached phot is showing Orchid which my brother had repot in a black soil !! it died, but it the stem bloomed into this, he put it in water and roots came out; I implanted in LECA. roots continued to revive, they are still healthy, but the leaves are as shown? can you help in that? Thanks (there is no way to attach my photo?)
Congratulations! You're the 2nd person to comment and the tracker is yours. :) Can you send me an email at amandamatthews@orchideria.com (it's the first part too, not just the part in blue. Since my comment section doesn't allow emails because of spam, it butchers my email). Mention that you are Kris so I know who it is and I will email back with what I need to send the journal.
I repot and grow mine using chopped coconut husks. It's very, very cheap in Thailand and comes cleaned in a large bag which holds about 5 kilos. The orchids seem to love it growing new roots and beautiful flowers.
I know this video is older ( I just discovered you ;)) and I’m sure I’m not within the first 5 but I’d still be interested. I’ve been growing orchids for 20 plus years but never as serious as I am now with my 100 plus collection, growing under lights and windowsill. At one point I tried to journal my orchids but it didn’t last with a busy life but with having so many now I realize it is a must. I’d love to hear your recommendations!! TIA!!
Hi Jean Mint, Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it. Where do you live? I can indicate the nearest place to get the journal, depending on your country.
Hi Jean, I have stopped due to a health and family issues. I am thinking about going back to making videos in 2 weeks or so. Well, at least I hope I can.
@@Orchideria oh I see, I’m sorry to hear that! I hope things get better soon!! Health issues for you and your family should take presidents! Do you live in the US or near NY?
HI Jean, Yes, I live in Kansas. Oh, I forgot to answer the 2nd part. Sorry about that. About the journal, in that case, you can find it on Amazon if you type orchid journey or orchid journey notebook. There are 2 different types of notebooks and you can pick the one that best suits your needs. Another idea would be to look at this page orchideria.com/orchid-journey and I explain the differences between the 2. On that page they link to the amazon store here in the US.
Hi Nada, Thank you for the comment. It's still not done 100%, but almost. I should have it completed by next month. If you want, you can go to orchideria.com/orchid-journey and see more about it there.
If you lived in desert climate, what would you use for orchid potting medium..? Love your Christmas cactus, any videos on how you care for it..? Thanks for Helpful videos 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Patricia, Thanks you for your comment. I appreciate it. In a very dry climate, I'd use more sphagnum moss than anything else. At least up to 60% of sphagnum should work well. It does take a bit of time to adapt to the watering cycle, but sphagnum moss is what holds the water the longest.
Hi Patricia, Unfortuneately I don't have videos on any other plants. I'm still a tiny channel and just started on UA-cam, so I have to stay with just orchids for now.
I would love to proof-read your tracker ... I used to do alot of proof-reading in previous jobs so would love the opportunity to do so on my favourite subject ... Orchids!
Hi Susannah, Oh how I desperately need that. Unfortuneately, I only have 5 trackers with me and those have already been taken. You are the 8th person to leave a comment.
Hi Suzette, The smallest bark chips you can find would be best. Mix the with sphagnum moss, more moss than bark. Since the roots are very fine and tender, they need something that isn't very big or coarse.
Excellent detailed explanation on each potting media. I hv.used neem bark which is available easily in my place Chennai in S. india. It is doing well. Pl. Gv. Me the link for transparent pots with holes as u hv. Used for ur demo. If like to hv. Them at the earliest.
Hi Sujaya, I am so sorry for not answering you sooner. I was looking over older comments and just now, I realized I had missed your comment. India has so many beautiful orchids! You are blessed to live there. I plan to go one day, but not sure when. The pots I mentioned are from a link from the Amazon in USA, so I don't know if it will work in India.
Hi TLC, I dont have a video made yet, but I did write 2 article about that. The first one is about mounting orchids on driftwood, ( orchideria.com/how-to-mount-an-orchid/ ) and the 2nd one is mounting on trees (orchideria.com/orchids-on-trees/ ).
Hi Najia, To be honest, I'm not sure. I've heard of using coconut fibers, but I haven't tried it yet. Don't use spanish moss since it will not hold nutirents and just decay. You can try pet stores, since frogs and other reptiles use sphagnum moss. Whatever they use as a substrate is also good. Peat moss isn't recommended because it's just a dust, like dirt. I'll ask around because besides coconut fibers, I'm not sure what would be good.

I saw a video that says that we should cut off all new growth except the leaves when repotting. What do you think about that? Love your videos.
I would love a journal
Thanks for all your tips!!😱😱 I’m so interesting to know more about and how to take care of them. There so beautiful in from Houston it’s really humid here.. Blessings!! I will like to have a tracker!!
Hi Edith, Thanks you for commenting on my channel. I appreciate it. 🙏 As for the tracker, I've already launched it. You can take a look at it here, which is a page on my website ( orchideria.com/orchid-journey ). I wish you the best and hope the heat isn't too bad in Houston. Stay safe!
Nice information mam
Thanks for the info God bless you fantastic idea Im from south Africa bye your kitty is cute mine was 6 years old he was bitten by a snake and passed on I miss him a lot he looks same like your kitty
Hi Anis, I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. May God bless you too
Excellent information. Thank you so much.
Hi Orchi Anu, Thank you so much for watching. I'm honored and humbled. 🙏 I appreciate it!
@@Orchideria Thank you very much for the advice! There may be hope for me yet! 😆 (Or at least for my poor phalaenopsis!)
Where to buy those cups for that with the hole in it I couldn’t find any where to get them please and thank you very good I love you Show

Hi Jerry! Thank you for watching. Keep me posted about the temperature drop, because I'm curious to know when your orchid will start producing spikes. :)
I want a tracker!
Want orchid journal, please! Even in a pdf? Thanks!
Hi. You can download a tracker on the website orchideria.com. Go to the freebies page and select the Excel file. :)
I WOULD LOVE A GROW RECORD
Hello , does the same go for cymbidiums ..
Your videos are interesting and really inspiring. It is helping me immensely. Thank you.
Please keep up the good work.
Hi Atanu, Thank you for the comment. :)
Hi Amanda,
Ops, I wrote the comment before watching the whole video.
I have two questions;
1- Is "Clay Pebble" a good medium for my orchids?
Greetings from the Philippines
Ive enjoyed your videos n been growing orchids for just 10 years now.
Anyways im indoors n trying to grow some phaeleonopsis.
Regards expat 🇺🇸Michael Sittard
How frequently should I water (rainwater) my orchids
I would love a tracker! I've tried over the years to keep diaries about my plants and garden. It's harder than one might think 🙂.
Can we plant only in tree bark,?? As in the nature, it grows only in the trees.
@@Orchideria oh thanks so much!! I live in the US (NYS).
Do you still make educational videos? If so how often?
I like it
Hi John, Thank you! :)
I would like a copy of your Journal I think that would be a great great asset to the Orchid Growers
@@Orchideria thank you I will convert soon. Any videos on your Christmas cactus?
Hi Patricia, Unfortuneately I don't have videos on any other plants. I'm still a tiny channel and just started on UA-cam, so I have to stay with just orchids for now.
I would love to proof-read your tracker ... I used to do alot of proof-reading in previous jobs so would love the opportunity to do so on my favourite subject ... Orchids!
Hi Susannah, Oh how I desperately need that. Unfortuneately, I only have 5 trackers with me and those have already been taken. You are the 8th person to leave a comment.
hi Im planning to buy phals seedling what is the best potting media for them
Hi Suzette, The smallest bark chips you can find would be best.
Hi Sujaya,
I am so sorry for not answering you sooner. I was looking over older comments and just now, I realized I had missed your comment.
India has so many beautiful orchids! You are blessed to live there. I plan to go one day, but not sure when.
The pots I mentioned are from a link from the Amazon in USA, so I don't know if it will work in India. They come in a pack of 6 pots, 2 of each size, and cost around 2 US$ a pot, which is pretty good in my opinion. You can see them by clicking on this --> amzn.to/2O3XdZg It is an Affiliate Link, so If you buy it, I get a tiny commission with no extra cost to you.
do you have a video about attaching an orchid to a mini palm or another plant for the orchid to grow on/with?
Hi TLC, I dont have a video made yet, but I did write 2 article about that. The first one is about mounting orchids on driftwood, ( orchideria.com/how-to-mount-an-orchid/ ) and the 2nd one is mounting on trees (orchideria.com/orchids-on-trees/ ).
What else can I use instead of sphagnum moss incase I’m unable to find it in my vicinity?
Hi Najia, To be honest, I'm not sure. I've heard of using coconut fibers, but I haven't tried it yet. Don't use spanish moss since it will not hold nutirents and just decay. You can try pet stores, since frogs and other reptiles use sphagnum moss. Whatever they use as a substrate is also good. Peat moss isn't recommended because it's just a dust, like dirt. I'll ask around because besides coconut fibers, I'm not sure what would be good.
