  • In this video I explain my experience I had when repairing the aluminum threads on my 2 piece BBS wheels using helicoil and time-sert. This is not an instructional video just my experience using these products. My particular application was on aluminum threads with a titanium bolt. Both inserts are claimed to be made out of steel.

Great video, I’ve always had good luck with helicoils, but my application is steel on steel so I can see where the time sert would be better in soft metal applications.

I was changing some fasteners on a Beta trials bike just yesterday and discovered the kickstand is secured to the swingarm with helicoils (oem fitment). I chased the threads with a tap to remove the old threadlock and one of the helicoils came out with the tap. So, off to the shop for an M8 Helicoil kit.
Chased the existing insert threads (in the aluminum) with the Helicoil tap and installed the new coil with some red Loctite. Insert held as socket cap titanium M8 bolt was torqued to 25NM.
I thought the coils might be stainless, but, checked with a magnet, they are ferrous.
I’m not sure titanium vs steel would make any difference whether the Helicoil didn’t hold.
Not saying Helicoil is superior to Timecert; I just replaced what the factory had used.

Timesert kits are extortionate cost wise compared to nominal Helicoil kits..

What size bolt and what torque are you using?

I have cross threaded my wheel hub and I bought helicoil brand with timeserts and i Also bought the spring type of inserts , after seeing ur video am scared to use spring inserts but how strong is the timeserts ? Can we trust in wheel hub applications ?

A timesert can hold more pressure than a helicoil. Having 1 one a hub is probably ok but it is better to just replace the hub.

@@SoCal210 it’s one bolt in a hub it might help me for a while thanks . Since time serts won’t expand will it stop the bolt from fully going in ?

Heilcoil may be stainless steel actually.
