That they always knew. Hardly anyone of them drove Trabant. The elite is the elite no matter what the system. And authoritarian regimes always assume that the people work for them.
I was 14 years old at the time and lived in the former district of Suhl, today South Thuringia. As a teenager, one was not entirely aware of the significance of the whole thing. What was different was the fact that you were suddenly allowed to "drive over", which was not so easy in the past. And then all the western vehicles. That used to be the most exciting thing for me.
Was 14 back then, too living just south of Berlin pretty much just besides the wall. This 8th Nov. was a Wednesday. The announcement of the border opening late on the 9th we didn't really recognize also on Friday 10th, just like rumors. But then on Saturday, 11th, when going to school the train station of Dahlewitz I had to pass was overly full of people on the way to visit West Berlin. The school was empty, out of my 25 classmates only 4 of us were there (incl. me), also most of the teachers were missing 😂. And the following weekend it felt like the entire population of Saxony was passing through to visit West Berlin. The train station at Schönefeld airport was packed with people, you couldn't move. By the accent of most people there you could think you were in Dresden. Interesting days!
All the DDR officials, officers, drivers, security personal, anybody who was somebody in East Germany and their staffs, in a short year found themselves nobodies on the street like everyone else.
Quite a lot of Citroen and Volvo in the East German Government. I walked pass that building in 2018 the building still in use with the German Government
@@kevinanderson3849 Yes sir that is the fact, actually Honecker wasn't in the power at that time anymore, was voted out. Then fled to Moscow before Chile.
Ça me fait trop rire tous ces officiels qui se déplaçaient en Volvo ou Citroën ou encore Peugeot. J’imagine aussi le reste. Quelle belle fumisterie. Allez, la fête est finie !

The battle was already lost when the east government decided that Volvos and Citroen cars are better then theirs🤣
Or even VW cars. 😅

All those people who are somebody, soon to be nobody.

Very strange comment.

There are no Algerians.
Right
Sadly, after this day we would no longer be treated to bearded women from East Germany in the Olympics.
A tragedy!
Eine Kindheit und Jugend ohne Gewalt von Messern, Waffen. War nicht alles schön, aber man konnte nachts allein laufen ohne Angst.
Genau wie auch beim Führer!

It has been a government building before and after the GDR.

Lack of resolution and video compression quality of that time.

How sweet those kids were. In 2024 looking back. Those kids in there 40 s. Almost ?? Hmm. Incredible times we live
The next day, a farewell to an immigrant-free new Europe took place. All the conflicts of the 90s and the noughties made Europe unrecognizable
