The Fall of the Berlin Wall - Rare and Unseen Footage (1989)

  • On 9 November 1989, East German leaders announced a loosening of travel restrictions between East and West Germany following months of mass protests across the country. Communist Party spokesperson Günter Schabowski held a press conference to announce the new measures, in which he was asked by a journalist when the changes would take effect. Having missed part of the briefing earlier in the day, Schabowski replied: “Das tritt nach meiner Kenntnis... ist das sofort... unverzüglich” ("As far as I know... effective immediately, without delay"). East and West Berliners erupted in jubilation, and spontaneous demonstrations and celebrations saw thousands mount the wall that had divided the city for decades. East Berliners began pouring into West Berlin while civilians set about destroying the wall. Mixing newly-resurfaced and previously unseen footage, this ITN Archive documentary tells the story of the first days of the fall of the Berlin Wall - known in Germany as der Mauerfall.

I was in the British Army at the time in west Germany, it was all over the news and the feeling of optimism was sweeping through not only the German people but also all of the NATO forces stationed there. I’m so glad that I was in Germany when the wall fell, I doubt I will ever live through such an optimistic time again.

Yes, that was the spirit. Wall down, Germany reunited, USSR ended, the Cold War over and the bad guys turning into good guys. It was a time of hope and optomism. Now reality and sobreity have set in, but the general direction is still good.

I was in Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie with the US Army. It was a night I will never forget. When it started we had no idea what was going on. You could see a mass of people forming on the other side of the bridge. I still have a piece of the Wall in a frame with a certificate signed by Helmut Kohl and Hans Modrow.

I was in Gabarone, Botswana, watching on CNN and South African TV, in English and Afrikaans. The general feeling was one of disbelief, that this was some type of large demonstration, and not something that would bring on a fundamental change in the post-WWII way of life. Wrong, really wrong. But nice.

Judging from appearance many East German border guards were undoubtedly born after the wall went up. I remember talking to a young East German who was just 19 the time the wall fell and he told me family holidays were always in Hungary where as teenagers they were known as the "poor" Germans. He'd always longed for a pair of Levi jeans.......something i'd taken for granted through my teenage years and could buy any time!

Poor Germans... LOL! There are stories of adventurous East Germans in the early days travelling by bus or train to France or Italy to just look around a bit and finding that they couldn't even afford to use the public toilets and the locals there being astounded that there was such a thing as poor Germans wearing tatty clothes.

A lot of footage here that I have never seen before and I have seen quite a bit. I was there when it all happened, stood on the wall in front of the Brandenburg Gate, got drenched with that East German hosepipe, drank Champagne with the others, nearly fell off the wall, didn't sleep for 3 days, watched as that first wall section was pulled down by us before the West-Berlin police came and shooed everyone away, nearly fell of the wall once. What a few days that was!
I think everyone knew this was coming, it was in the air, was only a matter of time, all we had to do is wait for it to happen.
Thanks for posting, a lot of memories have come back again, a lot of questions too. Where are all these people now? What has become of them? Are they all still happy it happened?

Ossies. They were called Ossies, or Easterners. They were looked down on as backwards, and unsophisticated. It took YEARS for them to assimilate into the New Germany. They were extremely left wing, including a couple of million communists. Politics took a hard left turn in Germany, which quickly transitioned into a Socialist Democracy. This was terrific for the country. The additional arable land, resources, and basic work ethic of Germany terrified England and France, who knew that a Greater Germany would eventually dominate Europe. Again. Still.

I wasn’t even born until 1992, but when I was growing up, my (American) parents had chunks of concrete in a heap in the backyard that we all called “the Berlin Wall.” One day I asked why, and they told me that when they bought the house in 1989, there was a concrete path through the backyard that they wanted to remove. So the next summer, when they were breaking it into pieces with sledgehammers, they started calling it “the Berlin Wall.”

Let‘s better call it no go zone or death strip, as there was no „no mans land“. The complete wall and barriere system was on GDR-territory. There were even some access doors in the wall for GDR soldiers to check the west side of the wall for damage. Even the west side was GDR property, but accessible for western people to spray their graffitis.

I did have a East German pen pal called Silke K from East Berlin for 2/3 years she writes in good English but l don’t know German and l was going to meet her but when the Berlin Wall fell she went to America as a Au Pair l think for a year then came back married to a Syrian but later divorced and married to a American and now lives in America it’s a shame that l never got to meet her that l wanted. Any ex East German would like to write to me no more than 40 years old.
