The original Turrican appeared on Genesis as well, but versions of Turrican 1 on the consoles are bad. Also there was an interesting version of Prince of Persia on Sega CD. It doesn’t look like the Genesis version, also has the same music from the Turbo version, and so bad it is hilarious voice acted cut scenes.
Cool video! I grew up with both systems, and also didn't even know that Lords of Thunder was on the Sega CD. In truth, I prefer the Turbo CD version, maybe because this was the one I played to death, but I prefer the sound effects a lot more.
Plus the Turbo CD version was first-way before the Sega CD port. And that opening rock number was not duplicated properly on the Sega CD version and to this day, is one of the greatest title screen openings ever.
Because the hardware didn't natively support multiple background layers. So, developers had to be skilled enough to add them, which some did but most just decided not to bother.
the turbografx 16 (pc engine) seemed like about a halfway point in technology/graphics between the nes/master system era and the snes, genesis (mega drive) era...not quiet on par with the true 16 bit systems but definitely a step above the 8 bit era...well, master system wasnt too far behind...
Why did you cover the Turbo CD version of Prince of Persia, and compare it to the cartridge Genesis release? The game also got a Sega CD version, which shares a lot of similarities with the Turbo CD release.
I never once saw a TG-16 growing up. I probably would not have remembered anything prior to 1991 or so but certainly by then, it either wasn't being carried anywhere or was tucked away behind glass display counters. I don't even recall seeing a single demo unit on a store floor (but plenty of Genesis and SNES systems everywhere).
They were both great machines. It was impossible to make up my mind between them. I got the Genesis first then gave it back and got the TurboGrafx and gave it back then finally went back to the Genesis.
Watched till the end and didn't get a final score? I really appreciated that you didn't just automatically score one over the other if you had fun with both (or neither). Slime World on the Lynx FTW, haha!
That's weired you did not compare Prince of Persia Turbo CD with the one on SEGA CD . They are quite the same, i think a little better on SEGA CD. I agry with you, even if the Genesis version look more beautiful i prefer the CD version.
Ironically, Panza is pretty much one of the best ST one on one fighters. But, on a computer we were expecting things like Panza. Generally after World Karate Championship and IK+, Panza is my favorite single button fighter. Go figure. Different platforms, different expectations. Awesome video as always, Greg!
At the time Japan had the best, by far, devs, and the UK, by far, the worst. So since the latter was such a giant gaming market and HUGE in the Commodore Amiga Devs pool, it's THE reason for such difference in expectation.
Some of these comparisons weren't entirely fair (Turrican 3 versus a bad port of the original Turrican? The bad first Turrican was on Genesis too, you know!) and you missed Dynastic Hero vs. Wonder Boy in Monster World, but still, this was an interesting video.
He also missed Zero Wing, Cosmic Fantasy 2 & 3 (vs. Stories on SCD), Exile., Langrisser, Black Hole Assault, Shin Megami Tensei, Darius (Genesis mini), Mad Stalker (though the MD version is aftermarket so ymmv on if that counts)... And if he was gonna compare games that are not 1:1, he also missed Splatterhouse 1 vs. Splatterhouse 2, the Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2 digital comics, Popful Mail, RoTTK3 vs. Rising Sun or some other strategy game like that... Yeah, there are enough for a whole nother video of comparable length.
This was a tough call, as I'm a huge fan of both consoles. I think where the TG16/PC Engine really shines the most comes from the Japanese library, and it's unfortunate the language barrier often gets in the way. With so many gems for either system, this one really was just a matter of preference. Good stuff Greg!
Isn't that game on the back of the Sega Genesis box same with Strider and ghouls and goblins that's what made me want the Sega Genesis seeing all the games on the back of the box
Ancient gamer here....gather round kids arrrrrrh for a tall tail...lol for real I scoffed the T-16 at first....I mean gaming was Sega or Nintendo...who was NEC and what did they have on gaming? Not much...I scoffed thinking that NEC was a gaming wanna be...I did read game pro magazine at the time, no such thing as internet back then...that was the way we heard news...or read it...one day I walked into EB....saw new in box T-16's for 59.99!! I had to....I was curious....and I wasn't disappointed....I liked it better than my Genesis in some ways. Brighter colors...sharper imaging.....I knew the Genesis kinda had an edge over the T-16 but I fell in love the the little T-16....been a collector and fan since.
Great video overall, but there is no universe where both versions of Lords of Thunder are a tie. The Sega CD version is missing key graphical features, like the water draining, or hiding part of the screen while going under the waterfall. It's just a dirty port of a game clearly designed for the PCE. The challenge level is severely dumbed down. At least it takes an interesting second run at the soundtrack.
There's no denying that TG/PCE CD music is unbelievably amazing, but it's funny that you kept referring to the awesome Genesis Yamaha FM sound as unpleasant.
Valis III is actually the most interesting comparison. There are a lot of differences. Their soundtracks differ, both in terms of rendition and which tracks play on certain stages - of course the Turbografx-CD soundtrack is better in quality but the Genesis version does very well with chiptunes; so it's really a matter of taste. Next, they have some different usages of color, again it's subjective. The Turbografx-CD version has more levels. It also has some more story with I think cutscenes and voice-overs, even if the voice-acting is campy; compared to just some slide-shows and text boxes respectively for the Genesis. The Genesis version in the presentation department has the parallax scrolling. But crucially, the Genesis version came out later and also has some gameplay improvements, small ones but it feels tighter and for this reason it has my pick too. The gameplay/controls improvements for me outweigh the edge the Turbografx-CD version had in presentation and content.
Don't know how many have already pointed it out, but when it comes to Castlevania; Bloodlines and Rondo of Blood are completely different games even though they're part of the same series. Even the protagonist is different so how could they ever be the same game?!
Andre Panza Kickbixing isn’t bad. It’s innovative for all attacks dealing with direction. The same as Data East Karate Champ. TG16 was the OG and better.
Regarding Street Fighter 2 on the Genesis, I just have 2 additional points. One is that Sega did release a 6 button controller, and I _think_ it became the default pack-in controller eventually. Also, ROM hacks have been released for SF2, to make the colours and sound much closer to the arcade version. I suspect that Capcom made those compromises to squuze the game on to a smaller memory cartridge. Similar hacks exist for the Mortal Kombat games.

@@GregsGameRoom No problem. I was just surprised it wasn't there. It's probably one of the most famous games on the Megadrive, mostly because of the meme I suppose.
While I much prefer the Famicom design, I understand why the NES was designed the way it was, but after the NES home consoles were accepted again and really don’t think it was necessary for the Japanese consoles to be redesigned for the American market after the NES. The PC Engine and Super Famicom had much better designs.
Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive didn't get a better Double Dragon ll port (version) on a 5 Mbit (megabit) cartridge it would need bigger (larger) 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 Mbit (megabit) cartridge
Hey, the Sega Genesis also has the original version of Turrican which should have been compared and there were more games missing from the list like Rastan Saga II, Wonderboy in Monster World/The Dynastic Hero and Ys III
I thought of another one - Dungeon Explorer. Oh and Exodus, I think that’s right. MUSHA is better in Japanese (Aleate - Full Metal Fighter Elinor). I played it last night. There’s a new stage and the game doesn’t slow down at the gunship. The difficulty curves are better I think. You can’t read him saying “Shut Up Greg!” Unfortunately though. I would have compared Spriggan with Robo Aleste on the Mega CD as they are both medieval themed.
Enjoyable video; there are some key differences between Lords of Thunder on the two consoles though. One is that while the music is amazing either way and generally the same compositions, the Sega CD is modestly re-arranged in some parts and the guitar solos are different between the two versions. The Sega CD version is more washed out looking with the Turbo CD being more vivid. Sega CD version is noticeably easier on default setting but I don't mind that as if I feel like a more casual play-through I'll go for that one. I do have a slight lean towards the Turbo CD musical variations but as you alluded to the mix is quieter and in addition the sound effect when collecting currency is very loud, drowning it out even more; this was wisely changed for the Sega CD version. Other sound effects though like the some of the enemies and bosses are superior on the Turbo version. You can't go wrong either way and both are worth playing though more than once, or several times. Also I'm wondering why you pitted Mega Turrican vs. the PC Engine original Turrican when the Genesis also had a port of the original game in this series, which would be the apt comparison.
The Kickboxing is known as Best of the Best: Championship Karate in the US. But at least the Genesis version of Gain Ground is better than the arcade... PS, Hellfire is actually made by Toaplan, not Taito.

@@gunsrtheanswer Genesis fanboy has entered the chat. lol
Cool, I’ll have to check those out.
did Turrican console versions look, move, play, sound, bad?
33:24 "Cartridge" is spelled wrong under that Sega logo...was that an official Sega typo? If so then yikes
How were there so many Sega games on the Turbo16?
Great vid!
Loved new vs videos thx.
TG16 doesn't look right without that back cover on.
Nice review, I enjoyed watching it.
You missed Fantasy Zone :)
I intentionally missed a lot of games. Too many for one video.
What about Atomic Robo Kid on Genesis vs. TB Grafx 16?
Why was parallax scrolling so uncommon on TG-16? Even the SMS and NES had games that used it.
Because the hardware didn't natively support multiple background layers. So, developers had to be skilled enough to add them, which some did but most just decided not to bother.
0:13 A certain crass South Park Japanese meme comes to mind with this comparison. They're the same console, why was this necessary?
the turbografx 16 (pc engine) seemed like about a halfway point in technology/graphics between the nes/master system era and the snes, genesis (mega drive) era...not quiet on par with the true 16 bit systems but definitely a step above the 8 bit era...well, master system wasnt too far behind...
Didn't splatterhouse come out on both?
Splatterhouse 1 on PC-E (1990 port of the 1988 Arcade game), Splatterhouse 2 (1992) and 3 (1993) on Megadrive.
TG16 was a 2D shooter power house!
Why did you cover the Turbo CD version of Prince of Persia, and compare it to the cartridge Genesis release? The game also got a Sega CD version, which shares a lot of similarities with the Turbo CD release.
23:49 The original Turrican is also avalaible for the Genesis.
Would love to see a PC Engine vs SNES video.
I loved the 16-bit era of gaming. I have a JDM PC-Engine Duo and a handful of cartridge and CD games for it.
You're right. It is amazing.
Great video. SNES VS TG16??
I played forgotten worlds for genesis over and over and over
I was a little disappointed with it.
It was the game that convinced me to buy a Genesis in the first place! Those zenny coins... ooh! Aah! So pretty in 1991!
@@GregsGameRoom why did it disappoint you?
Great video.
Blazing Lazers & Super Star Soldier Are My 2 Favorite SHMUPS Even To This Very Day Which Is Tuesday Sept. 19 2023 At 503pm
Turbographic 16 has it but need to spend what 400 on the cd on top of the 300 system. Or was it
No need, just get a white PC Engine, it can be found under 100 bucks. With a SD card add-on, it plays everything, including CD titles.
The european Mega Drive release of Prince of Persia has the music and some extra levels.
This was entertaining to watch
Watched till the end and didn't get a final score? I really appreciated that you didn't just automatically score one over the other if you had fun with both (or neither). Slime World on the Lynx FTW, haha!
That's weired you did not compare Prince of Persia Turbo CD with the one on SEGA CD . They are quite the same, i think a little better on SEGA CD. I agry with you, even if the Genesis version look more beautiful i prefer the CD version.
Vallis 3 on PCE: You slide under the water tower. Down and jump.
Ah, thanks!
I felt lucky to have both a TG-16 and Sega Genesis. The games between them were different enough to feel like I had one console with many games.
The Turbo seemed better at Bomberman with the brighter colors those types of games were the only thing the Turbo clearly excelled at
Forgotten Worlds on genesis is so underrated. Im not big on shootem ups, but I can keep comin back to Forgotten Worlds
An oversight. I didn’t call it for one Turrican or the other because they’re different.
@@cabbusses I thought of another one. Twin Hawk.
If you want to play the original turrican your best bet is probably the amiga version.
@@Scopie33 or Atari ST version
This was a tough call, as I'm a huge fan of both consoles. I think where the TG16/PC Engine really shines the most comes from the Japanese library, and it's unfortunate the language barrier often gets in the way. With so many gems for either system, this one really was just a matter of preference. Good stuff Greg!
I’ve been meticulously going through every Japanese game on my Turbo Everdrive and keeping the ones in English. There’s A LOT!
I love the soundtrack for Air Buster. It's so sweet! Same thing with After Burner
Great video !! You are a great reviewer !!!
I appreciate that!
TurboGRAFX has only 8 bit CPU.
Hudson makes prototype.
It has been tuned up.
So it play many games well.
R type is very well.
Thank you. There are far too many people saying the TurboGrafx (and PCE) is a 16-bit system. Only the Graphics Unit is 16-bit.
There was also a version of Prince of Persia with its own set of differences
Genesis is fantastic but the Turbografx-16 deserves more love!
I remember getting a Turbografx 16 for Christmas in 1989 and then returning it and getting a Sega Genesis a few months later for my birthday.
lol the first game he says "lack of parallax scrolling" while the buildings and clouds are parallax scrolling.
Nice universal soldier joke. Which version of turrican was the universal soldier games based on? I know it was on almost every system.
Yes, KLAX is awesome!
I can't get over the water tower in Valis 3 either ! I'm stuck and can't even get past level 1 , lol
Muy buen video
Don't know how many have already pointed it out, but when it comes to Castlevania; Bloodlines and Rondo of Blood are completely different games even though they're part of the same series. Even the protagonist is different so how could they ever be the same game?!
Andre Panza Kickbixing isn’t bad. It’s innovative for all attacks dealing with direction. The same as Data East Karate Champ. TG16 was the OG and better.
you cold also do twin cobra pc engine and sega genesis. both are really good.
What a missed opportunity with Turrican; we had Super and Mega but there could have been a Turbo.
Chiki Chiki Boys is 2 player co-op on the PC Engine which is an important omission
Does two-player omit the annoying low energy alarm sound?
Where’s Tiger Heli ?
You mean its follow up, Kyukyoky Tiger.... Excellent on the PC Engine, a bit weird looking on the Mega Drive (yellow/orange tanks).
There's also a Pc Engine Cd version of Raiden, called Super Raiden. It adds some extra stages and of course, improved music
.... MY TURBO GRAFX 16 TOP GAMES ....
.... Blazing Lazers AKA Gunhed .... Super Star Soldier .... Air Zonk .... And
My Favorite To This Day > Legendary Axe II ....
I was patiently waiting for Zero Wing, watching many games I don't care about, but it never arrived. I'm sad. I love Zero Wing.
Sorry! I’ll do it next time.
@@GregsGameRoom No problem. I was just surprised it wasn't there. It's probably one of the most famous games on the Megadrive, mostly because of the meme I suppose.
While I much prefer the Famicom design, I understand why the NES was designed the way it was, but after the NES home consoles were accepted again and really don’t think it was necessary for the
Japanese consoles to be redesigned for the American market after the NES. The PC Engine and Super Famicom had much better designs.
I had the Turbo Graphix only had 3 games though there was really no where to buy games for it. I had Bonk, Bonks Revenge and Keith Courage.
Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive didn't get a better Double Dragon ll port (version) on a 5 Mbit (megabit) cartridge it would need bigger (larger) 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 Mbit (megabit) cartridge
I had Genesis and SNES. Both were great. Never had TG16 but it always interested me. I’d like to find some TG16 games available on Switch.
The Genesis was far superior to the pc engine no question. I had both but mostly because i wanted to have every system
!! GENESIS....DOES!!
You could have done a comparison on Space Harrier w/ the Genesis Mini version and TG-16 and not used Space Harrier 2.
Turrican is based on the C64, which was the original (rather than ST or Amiga)
The Kickboxing is known as Best of the Best: Championship Karate in the US.
But at least the Genesis version of Gain Ground is better than the arcade...
PS, Hellfire is actually made by Toaplan, not Taito.
Good video. Fwiw I think the SMS version of wonder boy is better than the Genesis version, it's still odd that it's a shooter though.
