      I was a Security Police Missile Field Controller, directing security in the missile field for the 384th at McConnell for two years. Had the opportunity to spend time in the capsule of a Titan II site as well as looking up the missile from the bottom up in the water well at the exhaust of the missile and looking down from the warhead. It was an impressive site for sure. Participated in numerous fuel transfers on the security side. Six years after leaving McConnel AFB, I had the opportunity to participate in the launching of Titan IIs, Atlas, Minuteman, and Titan 34Ds at Vandenberg AFB, CA. Loved working at those 25 launches.

      because a lot of things have to happen to set a nuclear bomb off. Or for a nuclear missile to launch and detonate.
      One thing both sides worked on from pretty much the beginning of the nuclear era was making sure that an accidental nuclear explosion was next to impossible

    • @LordZontar
      @LordZontar Місяць тому +3

      It takes a specific set of pre-conditions to arm a nuclear warhead and effect its detonation. Also, the explosive lenses that initiate core implosion in the first fission stage cannot be damaged, otherwise you don't get that ideal uniform compression and instead of a detonation you get a fizzle. Nuclear warheads are more difficult to successfully detonate than you imagine. One won't go off simply because it falls to the ground.

    Good movie. I loved Dennis Weaver one of yesteryears greatest actors. I agree with someone else here how was it possible for a dropped wrench to pierce a missile.

    • @DoctorShocktor
      @DoctorShocktor Місяць тому +4

      A missile isn’t an armored tank. It’s a relatively thin skinned aluminum tank in which the outer surface of the missile was actually the outer wall of the fuel tank. The socket dropped was eight pounds, not an auto parts unit, falling from eighty feet. This easily pierces a lot of surfaces.

    • @1ask2risk
      @1ask2risk Місяць тому +3

      The socket in question as quite large, and was supposed to be tethered to the handle, but as the movie says, they forgot it. And it did not actually pierce the side, it hit the thruster supports and bounced up under the missile and hit an exposed and very thin walled fuel cell. Not a time I fondly remember. When Livingston was killed, his girlfriend was also on a maintenance team of some type supporting the site. Poor child was a basket case for a period. We all wanted to say something, but what do you say? the Fuel cell, breached, leaked and the the alarm sounded. What was not shown, 100,000 gallons of water I think, is dumped into the silo. This act created 100,000 of volatile water now. And as the cells empties, the weight could not be supported and it collapsed and ruptured the Oxidizer cells and BOOM! Bobs your uncle. It threw the silo door just under a quarter mile.

  • @EZ-E56

    The "vapor" they keep referring to is hydrazine. A poisonous rocket fuel that explodes when coming in contact with an oxydizer (a chemical that supplies oxygen). Nitrogen tetroxide was the oxydizer stored on the Titan missiles to combine with the hydrazine to cause combustion. Nitrogen tetroxide is a bright orange gas.

  • @WalterViggiano-it6sy
    @WalterViggiano-it6sy Місяць тому +4

    If the object fall hard and fast enough and is heavy enough, any part of the older missiles can be punctured. This just happened to an area at the fuel tank

    • @DoctorShocktor
      @DoctorShocktor Місяць тому +2

      The fuel tanks actually composed the outer skin of the missile. Quite simple for an eight pound metal object falling eighty feet to pierce them, unlike the conclusion of the “youtube engineer experts” here. 😂

    • @LordZontar
      @LordZontar Місяць тому

      Titan was a liquid-fueled missile and one with a very thin chemically-milled aluminum skin to save launch mass, and as has been pointed out, the missile core stage was just one big tank itself, with two internal domes separating the hydrazine fuel and the nitrogen tetroxide oxidiser. A falling socket wrench could easily pierce that skin. The blast didn't happen immediately. The hypergolic fuel leaked for several hours before something, a short-circuit probably, ignited it.

      There wasn't an accident like the one portrayed specifically in this movie, but there were several very close calls with leaks and other malfunctions. This movie is playing with the "What if" scenario where it doesn't remain a close call.
      Now, in this movie, they show us that the actual cause is oil/hydraulic fluid that mixes with fuel vapors. And since there were so many situations where these missiles were patched up time and again, it must be called a miracle that something as bad as this didn't actually happen. But there are still missiles out there, and because they are man made systems, unfortunately it can only be a matter of time before something as bad as this scenario will actually happen in realtime. So this movie should actually be mandatory watching for any crew on any missile system within both SAC and the US navy. Because it touches a lot of the issues with people not really knowing what to do and not wanting to stick their neck out even when needed to solve the issues.
      And most importantly, it showes just how important it is to imagine all the worst case scenarios when planning for accidents and mishaps in dealing with such volatile systems as an ICBM system, however remote or unrealistic it might seem initially. Because it is always the the details that have the devil in them. Not the grander issues.

Although the idiocy of the American voters in 2016 did nearly put control of these weapons in the hands of a maniacal con man (Trump). Luckily, it’s pretty well known that the American military leaders would never have let him anywhere near an actual launch or use of these weapons and would have taken control along with most other government leaders until more sane persons could be in charge.

    Sadly in the 80s many movie producers moved away from using 35mm film which lead to poor quality images like this. Unwatchable.

      Highly doubtful any Titan II missiles were sold to any other countries, though since NASA used them as well, maybe other countries paid for some civilian space launches? Definitely no ICBM models sold to anyone overseas.

      Any ‘god’ that would do that to a man is a sick, sadistic psychopath. That same ‘god’ issued laws saying fathers can sell their daughters into slavery. Another law said if a girl being raped doesn’t yell loud enough she must be stoned to death. Another of god’s 613 laws says if a child is unruly they must be taken to the edge of town to be stoned to death. Another of that ‘god’s’ laws stated if a man rapes a girl there is no punishment. The raped girl must be forced to marry her rapist then spend the rest of her life being raped by the rapist. The biblical god is the most immoral, cruel invention of primitive men in history. It’s laughable how christians believe that nonsense and actually worship that sick psychopath. The Bible is a disgusting book. Christians remain christians because they don’t read that sick book. If they did read it, all of it, they would condemn everything about that despicable religion.
