Golfers are some of the most petty people I’ve ever met

  • Obviously not all of them but of all the sports I’ve played and all the places I’ve been, in only 2 weeks I see why other people say similar things about golfers.

Going through some of the comments, I didn't expect this to get this many views
But for the people saying we should have let them through, we would have let them. But they waited for us to complete a hole fully and then went. It wasn't like they were sitting behind us on the tee before we went. We would be halfway through the hole and then they would just be approaching the tee on our hole. They stood as far away from us as possible and never engaged. So we assumed they didn't want interaction and never thought there was a problem.
And no, I'm not going to quit because of this as some of you think😂
Playing again this Monday and prob gonna get lessons soon. I've played many sports, some at the national level, some just for fun. You get used to the controversy and people not likely you. Happens everywhere in every sport.
But never happened so much this fast in any sport besides golf for me lmao

that guy was a total asshole...down south there is a ton of diversity in the game. just some words of encouragement. if you get a bogey after 2 weeks of playing you got the sauce, so good job man. im sure you maintain pace of play just fine too.

I'm sorry that happened to you man, I've had similar petty experiences and they make my blood boil! And those people think they're pros or that they're "Him" but they aint all that.

This happens in any competitive game/sport setting, if you went to play pickup basketball and you’ve only ever play basketball for two weeks you’re gonna get roasted. It’s life, get hit, get back up and keep playing. prove them wrong.

    A few things:
    1. Sorry that happened to you, most the golfers I run into are extremely chill but you get the occasional dbag. Don't let it suade you from pursuing the game, its so rewarding and you can play it until the day you die.
    2. The only thing I think you guys could have done differently, and they're still dbags anyway, is just wait on a tee box until they catch up and tell them to play through. That's what I do if people are really fast behind me, or like your case, its 4 of you and 2 of them. Doesn't excuse their behavior in the slightest but can save you some trouble.
    3. I'm 27, idk where you live but me and my friends belong to 2 private courses in Columbus, Ohio, if you ever find yourself up here we'd be glad to take you out to a stressfree day of golf.
    4. Scrambling can be really good while you learn, especially if your friends are better than you. That's what I did while learning, you get to play every shot on the hole, but if its bad, you play from their better one instead of feeling bad about yourself. It takes the pressure off of learning and just lets you enjoy the round.
    5. Best of luck man, keep going, screw those guys!

This. I golf every weekend and I don’t know any golfers who would take and hide someone’s wallet. That sucks.
That said…. Your friends who golf should have offered to let the 2-some play through. Generally speaking, people don’t ask to play through, as that can be perceived as extremely rude (I get that hiding your wallet is much much more rude, and playing slow doesn’t justify that. I’m saying this just so you know the culture).
It’s a weird etiquette thing that you wouldn’t know unless someone who knows the game teaches you, like they taught me.
Learning course or not, If I were walking as a 4-some and had a friend who’s only played for two weeks, I almost definitely would let anyone behind us play through (unless we’re on the 8th or 9th hole).
But again, there’s no way that you would just automatically know this.
Sorry you had a bad experience. Stick with the game it’s awesome

I meet jerks at the grocery store, work, Starbucks, golf courses, restaurants and everywhere. It also sounds like your head is spinning and YOU might be causing problems for a whole lot of people.
Maybe change your expectations of what is and is not a golf experience

I can tell you that I have this weird sense of entitlement from older golfers that is difficult to explain. I’m 33 but still feel like I’m being looked at like an ass hole kid. They want to “grow the game” but don’t realize these attitudes don’t help at all.

It's unfortunate you had a bad experience. Don't let it stop you from participating in golf. Golf is very rewarding, and a journey worth the effort.
The deal with the wallet is pretty whack, and would piss me off as well. However... as you are new to golf, you may be unaware of some of the etiquette to follow when you are out on the course. This is where your situation started to go south, and you may have avoided it by being more aware of YOUR responsibilities on the golf course.
** Always repair your damage. Replace/fix your divots, and repair your ball marks.**
** Always let faster players play through. ** ...This is standard etiquette at every course...and is written on every scorecard.
If YOU would have let the 2some through, instead of making them wait on every shot, for 4 holes.... YOU would have prevented a bad day being had by all involved.
That being said.... the rest of the shit you're talking... well you best not bring that to the golf course. I would offer that golf is more diverse than most sport/activities
Some of the best people I have known I met through golf. I have met some assholes as well...but that is to be expected when you have been competing and working in golf for 37 years.
Just as there is in anything else in life.
Looking at the big picture. You went golfing... You lost your wallet, and got it back, and all it's contents intact. Nobody died or got hurt. You left the course mad. LOL That sounds like a normal golf outing for 10s of thousands of people every day. Welcome to Golf. 😂

I can’t speak so much about the wallet. That’s kind of a weird/asshole thing to do, but like somebody else said there are jerks everywhere in the world.
I’d say as a beginning golfer there were two things you did do wrong though. You should have asked if the group behind you wanted to play through if it seemed like you were holding them up. Golfers don’t ask to play through. That’s just typically not how it’s done. Basically they wait and steam until the group in front of them finally asks or tells them to just go ahead of them and by that time they’re probably already pissed off. Some golfers do get really impatient which can be annoying.
Also since you’re a beginner and you said it yourself that that you’re not very good (which is fine…most golfers aren’t) if you’ve hit 8 shots already and haven’t even got to the green just pick up and move on. You’re not playing in a major championship. Don’t bother putting out. Just keep the pace of play moving.

Letting people play through will save you from dealing with a lot of assholes on the course. 15 years playing and I know the old farts are ones you gotta watch out for!

Here’s what I’m gonna tell you, don’t think you’re special and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Those old rich mfs will judge you from head to toe if you are below the age of 40. I’m a scratch golfer which is really good. Old guys who shoot in the mid 80’s will judge how I show up to my local golf course in a tee shirt and hey dudes. Hell sometimes I golf barefoot cause the grass feels nice. They wanna talk all ts until they get fucked up and realize that I’m actually good. Just get better and then laugh back in their face when you hit a drive 300 right down the middle with a little draw.

I’ve never seen anyone act like that towards another golfer on the range. Most people at the driving range are high handicappers. Sounds like you should play another sport if 90% of all golfers are petty assholes. lol either way, I’m glad they found your wallet and taught you a lesson.

This is a funny issue at golf courses. I honestly don't think it's anyone's fault and at the same time it's everyone's fault. So what I mean by that is there's no structure for beginners to learn how to play golf except maybe from their friends because most people don't take lessons and when they do they don't really learn etiquette or pays a player things like that. So I would say that's on the industry basically. Another issue is the golf course itself.
Why would they send a two out shortly after you 4? Wouldn't it have made more sense to send the two out in front of you knowing the context of the situation?
Also why doesn't the course have Marshals if you're actually playing slow that come out and tell your playing slow in a kind way just to educate people and help them understand about the pace?
As you mentioned the guys behind you should have just asked to play through and there wouldn't even have been an issue.
And lastly you could have been aware that you were holding them up as you mentioned they caught up to you by the 4th or 5th hole so you could have suggested at some point like especially a part 3 you let them hit or something like that to get past you.
What the other golfer did was extremely out of line. But this is a combination of things that led to this circumstance. Honestly in life I take it as what could I have done better typically rather than trying to blame other people. And like I mentioned I'm not saying this is your fault because especially being completely unfamiliar and unaware of a lot of these things maybe your friends could have been a little more observant or something like that.
Golf is an amazing game! And honestly there are Chumps in every sport in every game and everything you're going to do. When people are starting out in golf I suggest they go play part 3's are much shorter courses makes it a lot easier it makes it better to learn some of the etiquette and some of the social aspects of the game as well.

Its nit a white brown thing. Im brown and never have issues with anyone. Its a golf thing. It can be frustrating playing behind slower players. Pace of play is a huge problem. They need to change sone of the rules for begginer begginer where there is a max strokes per hole lets say 3 over per hole until you improve your game and then it wont be an issue shooting 3 over every hole.

  • @jack91522

Yeah you can run into a lot of bad actors on the course. You'll also find some of the chillest dudes out on the golf course. Hope this doesn't discourage you from playing, it sounds like you're figuring the game out pretty fast! I've been playing for a long time and I've never seen someone make fun of someone new, sounds like a stuck up golf course that you're playing at. I'm sorry about that. Most people I know would try and give you pointers and tips (even if the advice is trash). I can understand people being frustrated at slow play, but they're just petty losers for 'teaching you a lesson'. If i feel pressure from a group behind, I like to wave them up and force them to play through because I hate slowing down play. Sending good vibes from a fellow golfer! Sometimes its just about enjoying the nature and people you're with rather than stressing about a good score.

Im sure they just misinterpreted the situation and they thought you were being ignorant and not letting them play through, but from your perspective they are idiots, however they probably thought the same about you, however I do get it because being a beginner in golf is hard, hopefully you wont have any more bad encounters but ignore it and dont take it to heart because golf gets more fun as you improve so keep playing and dont let others sway your mind just because they dont act friendly/nicely to beginners. In England golfers are friendly, much much more friendly because they seem to support beginners rather than put them down regardless of race (I would know as I'm not fully white), hopefully in America you will experience that many many more golfers are nice people.

If you got 4 and there isnt anyone in front of you on the next hole, and they are playing faster behind you, you let them through. Like others said, doesnt excuse the petty behavior at all, but its stated in the rules pretty much everywhere, let faster players through.

They should have asked you to play through. No place for that kind of behavior. Stay after it, take some instruction, and the swing will come around. Some people are just arrogant assholes. Can't fix them but you can improve your game. Enjoy the journey.

Ahhh the many joys and perils of the muni course. From grannies chirping at you because you ask to play through their glacial pace or ding dongs blasting balls into without a fore.
Those guys were out of line and they could have easily asked to play through, which would have been totally acceptable. When you get better getting stuck behind slow players can be annoying, but that doesnt excuse behavior like that nor does is excuse the chirping and bad attitudes. Sounds like they had a big head, but jn reality probably arent even that good themselves.
Dont let them discourage you. Keep playing.

I know the title is supposed to border on clickbait, but lumping all golfers into the petty category is pretty lazy. Especially because you are new to the game. It's not like you are talking after 20 years of experience, and even then, it would be an inaccurate statement. Golfers do have all one thing in common though, and that is perseverance. Golf is one of the hardest activities to learn just to be bad at, let alone be "good" at. If you don't have the patience to not make a blanket statement about the people who play a certain sport after just one experience, then maybe golf just isn't for you.

idk where you were golfing, but to be 100% honest with you, the places I've been, people wouldn't be cool with others laughing at you. I'm not rich and im not dirt poor, I've been to some places, and from the highest end to the lowest end, unless you were doing ridiculous stuff like playing 3 balls every hole, putting everything out and not taking gimmies, searching the woods for 10 minutes at a time, and just overall taking a long time, sure i could see somene getting pissed, but in the given circumstances thats fuckin insane man. I used to caddie at nemacolin woodlands, i met michael jordan there, billionaires there regularly, and honestly ive never been around anyone who would tolerate that kind of assholerly..
Sorry you dealt with this mean, sounds like it was some unemployed street ghetto types you had to deal with. I hope this doesn't put you off the sport because some of the greatest people you'll ever meet are gonna be on the golf course.... in the real world, the people who truly have money didnt get there by being assholes, you might be surprised how nice people can be.

probably shouldn't golf anyway since for w/e reason it's associated with a 3x increased risk for developing ALS (lou gehrig's disease). plus golf courses are just terrible for the environment.
