1 year later, video is still being the dad we never had. Thanks man
Ha! Thanks for watching. Good to know how to do basic maintenance on your car. Saves you money and keeps it running. Thanks again 💯👍🏼😎
Never changed out spark plugs before, did it successfully after this video. Straightforward and to the point. Thanks!
Great!!! It’s good knowing you had 1st Time success changing them out. Glad I could help. Also, thanks for watching i really appreciate it 😎💯👍🏼
@@grind-it-out Thanks for doing your good deeds for the community. Hopefully you can get a little ad revenue from me haha
Appreciate that. Thank you for watching. I try to bring it when I can 🤣. Thanks much 😎👍🏼💯
I have a 2017 TSI SE Passat. Coming from a woman, THIS really helped me out. I took my car to the VW dealership with my engine shaking & they charged me $330 for a diagnostic test & changed out my filter. They didn't mention anything about a tune up. I was told I needed a New secondary Air Flow injection sensor/hose. That plus labor will cost me $840. I've never had my spark plugs changed out. This video makes me confident that even I can do this. TY... Wish you were in my home town Sir 🙏🏾😂🥰
I really appreciate the compliment. Happy to know I could help. It’s not difficult as long as you take your time. The dealership is so expensive. I’m not a mechanic but I try to do as much as possible myself. Sometimes those air flow sensors will cause vibrations. But around 60k you should change the spark plugs. Thanks again and I’m glad I could help 😎💯
Did changing the spark plugs work?
@@gilt4523 It was time for a tune up, but I also have an oil leak, so that has to be fixed, along with the airflow sensor. The engine light came back on last week. TYSM for checking back with me. I'll keep you posted. Taking the car back to the shop in a few weeks. Blessings🙏🏾🥰
It worked before I changed them. It’s just a preventative maintenance thing that you should do. My gas mileage probably got a little better but it runs smooth and should be good for a long time. 💯👍🏼
💯
Great video. I like your straight-to-the point approach without the often found pontification about the wisdom and virtue of plug and coil maintenance. I changed plugs and coils today. Your right, the coil bolts can easily cross thread. I felt one trying to, so I used a different one in it's place. Over the decades I've learned that once the threads start cross thread, they'll keep trying. Using one of the other bolts no will often remedy this, but ya gotta be real careful with both the offending screw hole and bolt or you could strip both, which causes a lot of heartache, money to fix and foul language.
I immediately noticed a difference in performance - smoother idle, better pick up. ONE HEADS UP... when you button every thing up and start the cart, you're dash may light up like a Christmas tree. It happens every time I reconnect my battery. Drive the car a few miles and every thing should reset and lights will disapper. If you're low tire pressure light stays on, park the car for 45-60 minutes to let the tires cool off. Locate your tire pressure reset button - my car is a 2016 VW Jetta, so it's inside my glove box, yours may be somewhere else. Press and hold the button for a few seconds til the light goes out. Your owner's manual or Google can help, too.
I appreciate the comment. Yea I try to deliver things straight. I hope you didn’t strip a coil bolt. Gotta be easy on those. But thanks again for watching 😊
I'll add some info here. Spark plugs are NGK 94833. Please add partnumbers when you make such videos. It takes seconds but very useful)
Alex.
Good idea. Thank u
Good video. One thing to note, I always roll the windows down and disconnect the battery before touching the coils on anything. Maybe it's not necessary, but I feel better knowing the battery is not hooked up.
Never can be to careful. Good extra precautions for sure 👍🏼
Yea and whenever you change a flat tire disconnect the battery and ecu just to be safe never want to short circuit the tire 👍
Absolutely 👍🏼 💯
@@desipranksterz7909Not to mention the muffler bearing…
🤣🤣🤣
Great video. Helped me a ton.
Some helpful things I picked up from other videos for those running into trouble:
Let your car run for a bit before you get to work. Makes it easier to pull out the ignition coils.
For the electrical connectors or whatever they’re called, you can also use a 90° pick tool (watch the FCP Euro vid on changing ignition coils + spark plugs) and slide it under the plastic lip and it’ll lift plastic and it’ll all slide right off. I used the flathead for two coils and the pick for the other two tighter ones.
Good advice. I appreciate it. Thanks for the comment! 💯😎👍🏼.
Great video. I was having such a time getting the wires that connect to the coil removed. Other videos I have watched weren't as detailed as what you've done here. I finally got my plugs and coils replaced today. I was just a little behind the maintenance schedule........ran plugs for 211+k miles. Just started noticing lower gas mileage and a little hesitation. Thanks again for your video.
Thanks for the ultimate compliment. I have the same issue with other videos sometimes. The small details. I’m really happy I could help. Thanks for watching 😁
Great video. It helped this task go much easier. The biggest issue I had though was with the connectors. I actually ended up breaking one of them. I was at 125,000 miles and changed the plugs because it was misfiring. That corrected the problem.
Thanks for watching and yes those connections are really fragile. Good to know your misfire is fixed. I’m about to do a video on replacing the ignition coil’s. It’s the same process It’s just time to replace them. Thanks again 👍🏼😎💯
Great video. One of the best I've seen on you tube! Love the sound effects also.

My first coil was a b***c to get out, everything else was super easy thanks to this video
So happy to know I helped. Yea that’s why I always put dielectric grease around the seals. They tend to get stuck after a while. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment. Would you mind considering subscribing to the channel? It really helps the cause. Thanks much. 😊
Hey sir thanks a lot, used this video to help me complete my repair 👍.
Just of note, I think with these vehicles you should change the ignition coil along with the spark plugs. Mine were extremely hard to pull and I ended up pulling the top off, so I went ahead and got a ride to auto zone and bought a 4 pack.
For anyone having the issue with stuck ignition coils, I’d recommend pulling the top off and blowing compressed air into that rubber stem and they will eventually pop out.
They might have been harder for me to remove because I did this job at 81,500 miles.
Yea at 80 k they are probably pretty stuck. I think 50-60 is the magic number. I’m so happy you were able to figure it out. That’s where the dielectric grease comes in. They will always remove easily. But at least you got it done. Thanks again for watching I appreciate it much. 👍🏼😎💯
What a video, really good and easy to follow. The first spark plug looked incredible, no carbon. I would have liked to see the remaining plugs as well as a closeup of the electrodes. Thank you. By the way this is a cake walk compared to changing spark plugs on V8 305 !
I appreciate that. All the plugs we’re about the same. Not too bad. But yea I had a hemi truck and they have 16 Spark plugs. It sucked. I appreciate you watching. Comment any time. Also would you mind subscribing. It really helps. Thanks again 👍🏼
Mine where at 0.040 😂 smh 🤦♂️ we installed performance spark plugs gapped at 0.024 - 0.026 witch is what Apr recommended after tuning. And I ran them at 0.040 for over 15k miles on the stage 1 tune 😂 it feels so much better in my opinion. I feel like it has a bit more power now but it’s only been about 5 hours haha… I did them today and tbh I think they were the original ones and I genuinely believe that this was the first time they have ever been changed. I’m at just over 96,500 miles
Yea definitely if you have as stage 1 the gap can change. I was just trying to show original OEM stuff. I’m sure you noticed a huge difference. I appreciate you watching the video. Keep in touch. Keep on doing mods. Thanks 👍🏼
If the coils are hard to get out and make a suction pop sound coming out your good. But if the coil easily pulls out it's prolly faulty
Most likely yes 👍🏼
You put out some great instructional videos!. Especially appreciate you highlighting the challenges and tips in doing the work. Nothing like getting into something and having surprises. I am a retired DIY but have taken on the hobby of doing scheduled maintenance on my 2015 Passat. Not sure I'd have undertaken some of the project without some guidance and inspiration. Thank you!

That’s awesome. Yes thank you. The channel is getting some good traction these days. I’m glad you are a part of it. Much thanks 😊.
Great video! This might help someone. The top half my coils detached from the bottom half. What we did was pull up on the rubber by about an inch, stuck a long flathead screwdriver in there and fished it around from a couple of different angles. This caused them to pop out no problem. Some took more effort than others.
Yea they get dry and brittle. Sorry that happened. That’s why I put dielectric grease everywhere to prevent any of that in the future. Hey I really appreciate the comment and compliment. Thanks for watching the video. Consider subscribing if you like. It really helps the cause for the channel. Thank you thank you 👍🏼
@@grind-it-out You got it!
These stupid cars are constant maintenance. I don’t drive mine hard but stuff still goes bad after awhile
Just a heads up about the coils…they don’t need to be put back in the same order that you take them out. A coil is a coil…unlike the old distributor cap/wire combo which required the wires to be put back exactly how the came off….also just a tip…if you ever have a an issue with a cylinder misfire, you can diagnose it by moving the coil of the misfiring cylinder to a different cylinder…if the misfire then moves to that other cylinder you now know that you need a new coil. If it doesn’t change then you know it could be the spark plug or a different issue…great video…keep up the great work.😊
💯 thank you
Don't take a screwdriver to the wire harness coil connections. The little tabs are thin plastic and I snapped it off watching this. Push connector in more, push tab in, should feel/hear click. Then pull out.
Yea I know they are cheap plastic. Thank You

@@grind-it-out My car then misfiring here in there. To the point that my engine light turns on and off. And it can be 2 to 3 weeks before the light turns back on or off. do you think changing the spark plugs will fix the issue. Because the codes are stating that is a misfire. I also just subscribed to your channel on
Thanks for subscribing. I appreciate it. It could be your coil packs. I always do plugs and coils first then if that doesn’t fix the problem it’s possibly a bigger issue. Plugs and coils are normal maintenance anyway so I’d do that even if it doesn’t fix the issue. Gotta start with basics then narrow down the problem. Find out what cylinder is misfire then swap the coil with another coil and see if the misfire changes to the other cylinder. If that the misfire changes cylinder then you know it’s coils.
Just gave me hope on changing my spark plugs and coils myself and save a bunch of money but how do I know which coil is bad ?
You can do it. As far as the coil. Switch it with another. If you get a bad cylinder reading it should change to the one that’s got the bad coil. If the second coil is bad, switch it with the first one. That will verify it’s a bad coil. If nothing happens then it’s a cylinder issue or bad plug.
Thank you much!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching 👍🏼💯😎

The coil packs are notorious for failure. They are not very expensive. VW/Audi has upgraded these over the past few years. Latest ones are from Japan. Consider replacing them if you have gotten 70k miles or 5 years usage. It's good insurance and you'll still have your old ones, if in a pinch.
Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment very much. I’ve recently purchased new coil packs and I will do a video on that when I find the time but my focus on this video was to just show how to change the spark plugs. But yes, I do agree that around 70 to 80,000 miles. People should probably look into changing the coil packs.

Hi, what name of paste (or cream) you have put on plastic? Thanks.
Look in the video description. There is a link for it. It’s Permatex. Here I’ll just give you the link here amzn.to/3uUP4MR
Great video, very detailed. For some reason my magmatic socket is not working, I have the same as you. I feel like the hole/pipes are narrow for socket to reach deep. I have 2015 Passat limited, any idea what it could be?
Thank you for watching. I’m not sure about the magnet issue. Never had that issue before. But maybe look into getting another one. But it does help. Great tutorial! 👍🏼 Mine is just about due also lol
Thanks for watching my friend 😁
My car doesn’t have grounding cables that you spoke of in the beginning of the video everything okay ?
Some don’t. Just replace the same way you took out. 😎👍🏼💯
I broke 2 of the plastic release piece of the connector clips and I can't get them off at all. Beyond frustrating and nothing I'm trying to do is working.
I walked right around the corner to AutoZone and got a pick/scribe tool with a 90 degree angle and I was able to pop the latch and take them off
The clips are not very tight. It’s just a small raised part on the coil. Try to gently pry so you can see inside it. Pull same time 😬
Great. It’s just cheap plastic. So easy to break
can you please tell me 2019 vw beetle 2.0 turbo how many miles befor a spark plug change is due ?
Not exactly sure but usually 50k miles. Owners manual will say exactly but most are 50 k give or take. Thanks for watching. Wish I had exact answer 👍🏼😊
Awesome video! When you pilled the coil you mentioned it's dry, what is the cause if you see oil? My son's car even had a couple drops come out of the coil at the plug. Not looking good?
Not sure about the oil. Maybe a piston ring is going out. But yes they are typically dry. I hope it’s not serious. I’d replace the coil pack at least. I’m about to replace mine with upgraded APR coils. I’ll drop a video in about a week. But yea. Let me know how it goes. Thanks again for watching 👍🏼😎💯
If the plug on the inside has oil it’s probably a bad piston ring or something of that nature. Not sure about the coil pack itself. Just a wild guess.
@@grind-it-out It's the coil boot and coil. Thanks for the info on upgraded coils Ill be waiting for the video!
Ok oil may have gotten in there from the top of the motor somehow. Anyway. Thanks again. 👍🏼😎💯
Hello happened upon your channel and my daughter has a 2016 golf with the 1.8 L TSI and I’m trying to locate the crankshaft position sensor. Would you by chance know where that is located on this engine? I have searched and searched and search and have not been able to find it.

great video, but didn't see you how to use the gap gauge, lol
I could’ve taken more time out to show how to use that but there are thousands of videos on that it’s very very simple you just slide it across the gap in the spark plug and if it lands on the correct number then the gap is correct. Maybe I’ll do a video on that someday but for now just search for gap gauge and how to use its the simple as part of the whole process I appreciate you coming and if you would like to help the channel out if you would subscribe that would be awesome thank you so much let me know how it goes

I installed NGK Plugs should ignition coil brand match for better performance? vs. the manufactured coil
That’s not necessary at all. I prefer OEM coils. Or APR coils for aftermarket. Most auto manufacturers use NGK plugs they just slap their name on the plug. Thanks for watching Consider Subscribing. 👍🏼

@@grind-it-out Your're come, What scanner did you use for VW? I want to know if you have time to test our Launch VW scanner.
OBD 11. But I’m willing to try different scanners.
Wait but you said we’d need the gap gauge tool but I never saw you use it
Yea sorry about that. It’s super easy. There are tons on videos about that. But simply put the spark plug on the tool and run it along the gap tool until it stops. The reading on the tool will tell you the gap. Most NGK plugs come pre gapped anyway. But it’s always good to check. Let me know if I can offer any help. Thanks
I can't get the plastic clips to come loose shit is pissing me off lol
Press and be careful. Pull back to open clip. They break super easy. Junk!
Dielectric, grease does not conduct electricity ,it’s an insulator.
True but it does help keeping moisture out.

All I know is use your hand to tighten it at the end of the extension. Then once it gets threaded on finish tightening with the ratchet. Not sure what the issue is. Just guide it in. It should nicely fall into its place. Not understanding why this is happening
@@grind-it-out I wish it can just fall into the colder but it’s not. It’s half way through , and not reaching the bolt to the bottom where the spark plugs are at. Thanks for replying!
You need a longer extension I think.
Still accurate for a 2015 ? In terms of the plugs themselves and gap ? The gap aspect is stressing me via research
Thanks for watching. Yes the gap should be the same. The plugs also should be the same. Look at NGK website. Plug in your car and it will tell you gap info etc… Thanks for the comment and happy new year.
18 to 20 inch pounds or foot pounds?
Ft/lbs. yes. Thanks for watching 👍🏼💯😎
two of the coil sleeves are stuck in spark plug, how do I taken out?
Keep pulling. Sometimes if they break you just have to replace them. That’s why I use the dielectric grease so that never happens. If they are stuck that bad they probably need to be replaced anyway. Hopefully you can get it out. Pull pull pull. 💯👍🏼😎
@@grind-it-out Thanks for reply and encouragement.
Anytime 💯👍🏼😎
Is this for 2015 passat as well? TY
I imagine it should be the same. I’ve seen no difference. It’s probably identical. 1.8t engine. I have a friend with a 2014 and it was the same. So 2015 should be good. Thanks for watching
How long did it take you to complete the job?
It’s about 45 min not bad at all.
Despite the really helpful and well done video, this project appears to be a bust for me. The coils seem to be so badly fused that I wasn't able to remove a single one. I thought I finally succeeded in removing one, only to quickly discover that the top of the coil separated from the rest of the rubber boot seated in the spark plug well. I spent another couple of minutes trying to remove the rubber boot, but had to give up and put everything back together. There is no indication (yet) that I've done any harm, but now I'm going to have to let the professionals do it and hope my assessment is correct.
No no no. Just get new coil packs. Pull the old ones out even if they seperate. If they separate just make sure you get it all out. Replace with new ones. Good ones are only around $160 for the set. A shop May charge a lot. Let me know. It’s not difficult at all. 😎💯
Use pliers or whatever to pull remaining part of coil out. That’s why I’m the video I stress putting dielectric grease on the coils so they don’t get stuck. But pull them out. No damage should happen. It’s just a metal tube down to the spark plug. Seriously save yourself money and just get them out even if in pieces. 💯
Well, not wanting to give up, I have ordered the coil pack and I'll work on it again tomorrow.
I wasn't able to get back to it again until today, but success!
Once I got the coil packs out, it went smoothly from there. Each plug was pretty corroded and each one felt as though it was covered in glue when I finally got them out. I suspect the plugs were put in with silicone grease vs dielectric grease. Whatever it was, it had solidified and created a bond to each of the plug caps.
Nice to hear. Silicone grease and dielectric are pretty much the same. But none was ever applied I think. Most people don’t apply it. But yea. If you keep at it they will eventually come out. Coil packs are such an easy thing. I could never imagine paying for it. Good job!
My 10mm bolt is stuck to the other 10mm bolt with the ground wired stuck in the middle
Don’t break it. Use 2 wrenches. Hold one with a wrench and use another wrench or socket to remove it. Spray with WD-40 also. Let me know. But be careful they break easily
@@grind-it-outhow did you get a wrench in between both 10mm nuts? A standard wrench is too tall.
I have a small set of metric wrenches. It works fine. If not get some needle nose vice grips or pliers and that should be enough to hold it while loosening the top nut
removing the connector was the worse part
Yes. It’s delicate. Those little clips you gotta be careful with. But thanks for watching and if you would consider subscribing that would help out a lot. Thanks so much 👍🏼
So the spark plugs are preset?
The are supposed to be. But it’s good to check. 1 little bump can change the gap. Always check 😁. You said preset. I assume that’s what you are referring too. Thanks for watching
Yes sir.

Yup i broke that plastic connection 😂
Hopefully you still got it off. It’s not a big deal if it broke. It will still snap back on. 💯👍🏼😎
@@grind-it-out thanks for the video. It’s on there but it’s broken so there’s nothing left to secure it.
Pull on it. I think it should still snap on. If not as long as you have a good connection you should be ok. 💯. They make things so cheap. It’s ridiculous 🤣
Broke one of the clips on the coil connections (how do I get that one off) and one of them I cannot get off even using all of my might.
I’d love some help 2:39
How can I loosen them
It happens. Get the screwdriver on the bottom part of the clip and pry it while lifting the coil with the other hand. I’ve broken some before. They aren’t snapped in very hard. Try that.
But before you really break the wiring harness look at it closely. Just get it to break free using light pressure. If you broke the clip just grab a piece of it with pliers or something and pull
do you recommend changing the wires too?
Not unless they are damaged. Plugs first. Then coils then check wiring if all else fails. Thanks so much for watching. Please consider subscribing 👍🏼
Just went to do my wife's 80 thousand none of the boots want to come out. Dealer or who ever changed before must have not put any dielectric grease on them.
I always use it to keep moisture out and ensure a better connection. I’m no profesional but I always use it. Plus it would probably prevent them from being stuck as well. I hope you found my video useful. Thanks so much for watching 😁
What if it doesn’t come out
The plug or the coil pack?
If it’s the coil packs then you need to pull like hell but they will probably break but that’s ok. They need to be replaced with new ones anyway. Use pliers or whatever to get them out. The rubber gets stuck from heat over time. Just get it all out make sure everything is clean before putting new ones in
I've got stuck coilpacks on my 1.8TSI lol
Try to gently twist them. Now you see why dielectric grease helps. Just be careful when doing it let me know. Why you’re at it, do u mind subscribing to the channel? It helps a lot. Please let me know how it works out.

What tool is that to get the spark plugs out
A 5/8 deep well spark plug socket. Pretty standard socket. I have a magnetic one I got from autozone for $10. But you can find them anywhere and it doesn’t have to be magnetic.
