First of all, you should know that she survived cancer. And read her brief life history. For example, pneumonia that has been hard on her for many years! And this review and reaction is also the history of your life. I will remember this video and your first history forever. Thank you for the good reaction and review.
Without a shadow of a doubt Sohyang is one of the finest singers in the world. She is so consistant and I have no idea how she generates the power from that slight frame. Try her song 'Everyone'. It is an emotional masterpeice and a reflection of how this beautiful soul lives her life. I don't normally look for subtitles but in this case they are essential to understand the context of the song. Sohyang sings in a mix of Korean and English and it is truly wonderful! :) ua-cam.com/video/S9J1k_zmo24/v-deo.html
so this Lady started her career in the early 90ies she no sooner started but then got ovarian cancer she prayed hard to god and made a deal with him .. if she could live through the cancer she would dedicate her life to him and so she did and the only regret she really has is she can't have any children .. but the people she mentors through South Korean university as the dean of music there she can at least help her students in any way she can thus spreading her joy to the world that way.. she has entered many music competitions and won most of the even retiring in certain ones so other people can have their time she shines she is so very humble
We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ua-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/v-deo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on UA-cam. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on UA-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right with Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas. Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: ua-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/v-deo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/v-deo.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ua-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/v-deo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her. Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: ua-cam.com/video/C6iHh4yBxCo/v-deo.html Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: ua-cam.com/video/LrNkVRrK7_I/v-deo.html Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918 And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334 Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: ua-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/v-deo.html Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: ua-cam.com/video/rte-q3kunp8/v-deo.html Her performance of "Fate" in Korean requires no translation: vimeo.com/198161448 And finally “Will You Be There”: ua-cam.com/video/nBdSpexUxik/v-deo.html Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/v-deo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/v-deo.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉
Sohyang..I think she is not just perfect with her vocal skills but she really means what she sing. Every lyrics hit me so hard. I can feel her when she open her mouth. That is the experience.
Congratulations, you just discovered a gem. Sohyang is one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet. She has so many performances that will blow your mind. A warm welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang. Step on board and take the journey. Great reaction, thank you.
I know for a fact that you are going to be bombarded with info & recommendations about this amazing woman but let me tell you, you have stumbled on a diamond here both musically or emotionally. You may wonder how you’ve never come across this amazing singer before, truth is that she continuously rejects all the major record companies that try to get her on board. She has no interest in the riches that usually accompany a ‘diva’, she chooses to follow her own path. It is common knowledge that’s her sole reason for singing is quite simply to comfort people experiencing difficult times. Sohyang is a cancer survivor & has a continuous battles with her health because of this so she maybe has different priorities to most of us. She isn’t active on any social media platforms. Apart from an amazing voice she is also a very talented musical arranger & is responsible for the arrangement of all her performances, she is also a published author of fiction & a university lecturer, of music, by day. This lady with the big voice is very petite, slim & barely 5’. I just see you mention Dimash & where he is known as the ‘king’ when it comes to vocals, Sohyang is often referred to as his ‘queen’. I hate the Mariah comparison because she can do whistle notes but very rarely do you hear them & she has much more variety in her voice than Mariah although I can see that it was meant as a compliment. I think that she is a combination of Mariah, Whitney & celine, depending on the song she’s singing, but she can stand toe to toe with all of them. You will be bombarded with recommendations but I think if you really want to see what she’s all about then I recommend her song ‘everyone’ from the immortal songs series. A song Sohyang herself said is the most difficult for her to sing because it is 7.5 mins ( of vocal magic) long & with a lack of places to take a good breath with the crazy dynamics. You ‘WILL’ need your kleenex😂😂. If you would like something more up to date then I recommend choosing one of her performances from the ‘begin again Korea’ series which was a series of low key mini gigs on front of very small audiences of key workers etc during the pandemic. She was with a small ensemble of well known ( younger pop stars) & a couple of musicians who performed like this all over the world before Covid but their usual ‘token elder’ of the group was ill & as it was to be only in Korea whilst Covid was around, she decided to help them out. They always referred these performances as ‘busking’ but the thing that it really shows is that when there is little or no musical accompaniment, the best singers really shine & in these conditions Sohyang shone like the brightest star in the sky. If you choose this option then I highly recommend the first song featuring sohyang that was released on UA-cam, her stunning rendition of ‘I will always love you’, just so you can see how she honours whitney Houston. I would also say that you should never avoid her songs that are in Korean because believe me, because of her ability to tell a story & portray emotion in a song it doesn’t seem to matter what language she sings in, it still works & I am 100% English, speak no other languages, nevermind Korean, yet she regularly reduces me to tears even though I don’t understand a word she is singing, which I find remarkable. Even when subs are provided, I have heard many people say that they found her so mesmerising that they didn’t even look at the subtitles. It’s not that she has a few standout performances that are of really high quality, it’s song after song after song of brilliance & therefore why I think there is such a lot of different performances recommended, it’s simply down to personal taste rather than one song been better than another. Although this lady’s heart is in gospel music, she can literally sing any genre & there are video’s available that show this, rock, pop, blues/jazz, the big power ballads obviously & she can even rap ( check out the song ‘day day’) although I have yet to hear her sing opera but am in no doubt she could if she wanted to. She has also had no formal training except once whilst visiting the US when she spent some time with the renowned vocal coach Seth Riggs who showed her how to sing in mixed voice. As it turns out that is now what she probably best known for, her beautifully balanced mixed voice that she can take really high. She can go much higher but she is renowned for her Bb5 which is just amazing, a real sweet spot for her & easy for her to achieve it seems if you watch her. Because her heart is in gospel, you can often hear elements of gospel in her arrangements of songs that aren’t usually associated with the genre in their original form. Finally, I suggest you check out her back story to get where this amazing lady is coming from & why she sings as she does, but beware, she is very very very addictive but that’s probably because she is as beautiful on the inside as her voice is on the outside. Welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang!
Hi Linzi, thank your for taking the time to comment and share all these interesting details. Sohyang sounds impressive and very special (not just vocally). I am excited to check out more of her work. I also appreciate the suggestions and am def. intrigued to check out her songs in Korean as well. :) thank you
I’m wondering, if she’s not active on social medias, how do we know where is she going to perform? I’m not from korea tho but i really want to see her live one day
I don't think she's barely 5". She is reported as 1.64m, and that is considered on the above average height for an asian woman. So I dont get why people call her "petite".
There are a lot of sensational female singers outhere like Ankudinova, Morisette, Jordan, Aurora, Nightwish, etc that people like to react, but So Hyang is like a Queen of Vocals and because she's not commercial, goes underground, underrated. She's one of the best female voices ever open her mouth in modern times. You havent seen anything yet. Explore her.
She is the brightest emotional beacon of our times. A cancer survivor with great musical intuition that approaches with respect her work and audience (all of us). The real deal when we talk about artists.
Welcome to the world of SoHyang~!!! She is CCM/GOSPEL SINGER of South KOREA and cancer survivor. . She is one of the greatest vocalist in the world. But She wasn't known as well as popular because She sing for GOD and Comfort people who has hardtime Not for fame or money. ..In her youth, she turned down all offers from mega agencies for her beliefs...and now she is 44years old. .She has so many legendary live performances . She always sings with sincerity whenever and wherever. So it comforts those who listen to her song...That's why I love her...And her singing skills are the best, not to mention... This performance is just tip of iceberg.. . Thanks for your reaction of Queen Sohyang ♥
Thanks for the shout out. I have been waiting for you to finally react to Sohyang, and I wasn’t disappointed. Watching you watch her for the first time gave me great pleasure. If you get to know her more, you will find her to be a deeply devout Christian who is probably the most special woman I have ever seen. They say her voice make the angels jealous. What I know, is I have watched her daily for five years now. She inspires me like no other. Thank you again.
Welcome to Sohyang's world, one of the greatest but least known female vocalists around today. If you are wanting encouragement you can't go past Sohyang as her goal is to comfort and bring joy to others. As others have said she is a cancer survivor and has battled pneumonia off and on for many years. I have always felt this performance was about how God was her bridge through cancer and that she wanted to pass that surety onto us. Us Sohyang fans mostly ask for reactions to her so people will know and find out about her, because Sohyang has no large label backing and no social media presence, finding her can be difficult. First time reactions to her are also fun for us, but mainly we feel the world needs more people like Sohyang who spread comfort, love and joy. Many people in the West have never heard of her and we want to fix that. I discovered Sohyang about 4 years ago through this performance and still listen to her every day. Nobody is ready for Sohyang, she is one of a kind. :)
I agree with you however there is one thing you missed. She has been offered multiple huge label contracts but declined because she doesn't sing to be wealthy but rather as you said to bring joy and comfort for those that need it. I absolutely love her and I'm also a stage 4 cancer survivor. Unfortunately because of radiation treatment to my neck I lost my ability to speak which makes her voice that much more special to me. I was also a studio engineer for many years and she has a voice that we dream about.
You've listened to one of the best singers on the planet today and technically perfect (based on opinions of experienced and knowledgeable vocal teachers (eg., Elizabeth Zharoff from Charismatic Voice, John Henny Vocal Studio, Roberto Delli Carri, Beth Roars, etc.). She is the queen of the mixed voice, belting, vowel modification, etc. (she has taught voice at a university). She can also sing rap, rock, jazz, etc. All of her performances are mini-masterpieces. I suggest the following: 1) Arirang Alone (Korean folk song) 2) I Have Nothing (Whitney Houston) 3) You Raise me Up (Josh Groban) 4) *Everyone- she has stated that this 7 minute masterpiece is her hardest song due to breath control. Be sure to listen to her performance that has SUBTITLES, which will make this song much more poignant. 5) Lean on Me (Bill Withers)- Michael Bolton was in the audience
@@rosalieelliottofficial I agree with you on your breakdown of why people like reaction videos. Every one of the points you bring up apply to me. It is the chance to relive vicariously the journey of discovery through anothers eyes, and ears. However, personally I also prefer to watch reactors who have the skillset to do a more in-depth analysis of vocal techniques and musical structural choices. These allow me to even more fully appreciate the artistry on display. This song along with 'I Have Nothing', 'Raise Me Up', and 'Arirang Alone' (A Korean folk song, dubbed the SK unofficial national anthem) comprise what I refer to as her "epics". Equally impressive are her appearances on the TV show 'King of Masked Singer' such as 'Breathe', 'Hug Me', 'Home', 'Mona Lisa', and 'Day Day'. More recently though, her stint on the show 'Begin Again: Korea' presents a completely different set of masterful performances in a stripped down, acoustic set of "busking concerts" with other Korean artists. Standouts include 'I Won't Give Up', 'I Will Always Love You' (you will really dig the "sax" solo), 'Flashlight', 'Stay', and 'Love Poem'. Many of those are more along the lines of the opening stanza here. Standing alone atop her body of work though is her vocal tour-de-force 'Everyone'. It contains the gamut of vocal styles, techniques, languages and genres in a 7+ minute opus that she defines as, "the most difficult song" she has ever performed, even though she does it quite effortlessly. If you opt for the latter, please use the vimeo version that includes subtitiles for the full emotional effect.Along with Dimash and the Filipino singer Morissette (check out her cover of 'Rise Up' or 'Never Enough' on the Wishbus to see what I mean), I consider the triumverate of "Best vocalists in the world" currently. For something a little different you should consider exploring the a capella group Pentatonix. They are celebrating their 11th year and have over 200 covers and originals on their channel to choose from, none of which are anything short of stunning. The standard jumping off point would be their immaculate version of the Leonard Cohen classic 'Hallelujah' with 650+ million views (part of their 5+ biilion views and 19 million subs) here on UA-cam.
I really appreciate the things you've shared. I agree with your perspectives on life. I think you and Sohyang would have a great time hanging out! For your consumption, there is another song by her; it's called "Everyone". It's a Korean semi-gospel song she sang a while ago. They have videos on Vimeo with English subtitles. I think you will be comforted.
Sohyang, one of the world's great Gospel Belters...always surprises the first time you see her, hear her! She lives in the E5 range...great reaction and comments! You won me over, I subscribed!
Interesting premises for your channel. Yes, I watch reaction videos to relive my personal experience and to enjoy again the original thrill derived from my initial experience. There is no doubt that we share the human instinct to be part of community. Affirmation by others facilitates our sense of belonging. Nevertheless, Sohyang's music takes a special place beyond the momentary gratification of a fleeting and instinctual impulse. It's convenient to be amazed by her gifted vocal talent or her pristine technique, but the sensation of exploding feelings released from untangled emotional fibers from within is something indescribable for those ready to take advantage of her true gift that rejuvenates consolation, comfort and gratitude for a heart wearied from mental anguish or fatigue. This performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" holds such a binding charm that I've been watching reaction videos of it for more than 5 years ever since I first randomly ran into it. Sohyang is an artist that offers substance, context and inspiration. You are right that there are artists whose greatness goes beyond their vocal chord, but in their life and spirit. Sohyang has much to offer and share as an example.

AWESOME reaction! Your face says it all ❤. Reminds me of the first and every time I listen and watch her perform. MY opinion, best vocalist, performer, person, that ever walked this planet. Bold statement, I know. She touches your soul every time. You feel it, that's what separates her from the other great Diva's. Keep going with her, you just touched the surface, go deep with her 🙂. She is an angel 😇. 👍👍❤
Welcome to the universe of one of the goddesses of the select vocal Olympus. she along with Dimash, Morissette Amon, Lara Fabian I think they are part of the best voices of this century, without a doubt, Sohyang's life story deserves a reaction, she is well known in the world of reactors , but she is not famous because she herself has rejected fame, fortune, everything for her religious faith.
Rosalie, we can take unto ourselves another person's pain if we're willing and if we ask the Lord to use us i intercession. Galations 6:2 says. " Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." I didn't reallly understand this verse at first then a friend and coworker lost her 16 year old daughter in a car accident. She called me about 5 days before the one year anniversary of her daughter's death. She asked me to pray for her and her family because it was going to be hard for them. That day fell on a thursday. So I prayed every day but when I prayed that thursday I was in tears before I got to my lnees. I experienced such pain and grief that my screams and words were silent. I physically and mentally felt as though I had lost a chjld. The grief was almost unbearable! I keep cup towels near my prayer place and I think I soaked 2 or 3 of them. When the intercessary prayer finished I got up not understanding it all. My friend called on saturday and very quietly said " Thank you." Then she said " it wasn't as bad as we thoight it would be ." I thanked the Lord that night and asked Him about it and He led me to the verse in Galatians. Howw the Lord can take some pain and grief out of a person and place.them in another is beyond me but I've experienced this miracle 4 times so far. As tormenting as the first time was I told the Lord that I was willing to continue whenever He chose. Sorry this is so long but maybe other Chrihstians will ask the Lord to make them His intercessors. I love SoHyang and I thank you for your reaction! Try "Arirang Alone" and. " Lean on Me" for more SoHyang. Blessings!
Thank you another great afternoon ride and I am glad that you always stick to your guns and let everyone know exactly what you do and that you are a true reactor I watch your face and actions and how the music affects you that is something you cant hide or fake your face says it all and I love that thank you for being just you again. I love her voice and she can move you in a very deep way she is someone I like to listen to when I am feeling down and lonely and she makes me feel so much better. This is the best cover of this song I have ever heard and I was a fan of the original for many years but I prefer this one now.
Synchronicity of feelings, emphatic reactions is what we love of reactors. A reactor like you, adding your perspective and different insights makes it even more attractive. Sohyang is emoting the feelings so much, that you want to hold her and protect her from the odds of the world. There are many Asian singers that emote very strongly their feelings. Look at Morissette Amon for instance - ua-cam.com/video/vqcxM7dSJtw/v-deo.html An American example is Morgan James with Post Modern Jukebox - ua-cam.com/video/Yq4KA0mUnC8/v-deo.html
I will suggest next from Sohyang if you wish to continue the journey -we do hope you do. "Arirang Alone" from Immortal Songs 2. This is a beautiful Korean cultural song about the split and longing and hope they have for the North and South to be reconciled. We don't compare Sohyang to Mariah, Sohyang is Sohyang. :) She does not whistle as she doesn't need to.
Rosalie, thanks for your great discussion. As you explore Sohyang's music, you will find, that as one fan put it, she 'becomes the song'. Not sure, but I believe Paul Simon requested that, when other artists do a cover that they NOT exclude "Sail On Silver Girl", and that request has been honored by everyone who sings the song. I hope you review more of her wonderful performances. Cheers.
thank you for your comment. I am sure I will enjoy exploring more of her music. She did such an outstanding job. Interesting what you shared about the cover request.

That's what I have been waiting for Rosalie. Perfect reaction and comments. When I discovered her 5 years ago she opened my eyes to the entire world of music. Thank you. You've now reacted to my top three singers, So Hyang, Faouzia, Diana. Can't wait for more new artists to come So, thanks again.
That's what you call a divine experience. I enter these reaction channels because I love music in general and I also look for how it touches the reactor and me. I'm always looking to where I can get the most heart felt experience. Has anybody told you today how beautiful you are as a human and how special are those words you throw out to encourage and express kindness 😉. Eres tremenda persona. Your reaction here was heart felt, thank you. So sorry for your lost.
Kim, So Hyang (stage name: Sohyang) is a South Korean singer. She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King. Here are several links for a bunch of excellent performances by Sohyang. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.
She always touches my heart and makes me cry. Her goal is to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She is one of the greatest gospel singer I've ever heard. I'm a Buddhist but truly love her beautiful soul and respect her sincere faith in God. Thank you so much for great reaction and analysis. Absolutely I agree with you. She is just amazing and incredible. Please more react to Sohyang. Have a nice day.
Sohyang is one of my favorite singers. She's so amazing! Check out her rendtion of "Everyone". It's a masterful performance. I also suggest that you listen to some other crazy talents from South Korea: Forestella. It's a male crossover vocal quartet. They are the kings of beautiful harmonies. Start with their cover of Scarborough Fair (they sing in English there) or Hijo de la Luna (Spanish song but they sing it in Korean).
Rosalie, I don't know you and this is the first time I came across this channel as just wanted to listen to Sohyang but wanted to feel like I am sharing my emotions with others who'd enjoy Sohyang also. My small advice for you would be, people who don't know you may hate you for no reason but equally people who don't know you like you for no reason so let's call it even 😂. I personally felt that you are not just 'reacting' for viewing, you share your philosophy of life through the music you are listening to. I really like that if I am the singer I would appreciate your thoughtfulness. So, keep it going for those people who invest their time in your channel. 🤘🤘🤘🎸
Thoughtful discussion. Connecting is an important element to the enjoyment of reactions. UA-cam and other media have opened up music from all over the world. The more exploratory of us find all kinds of new artists and music, including singers like Sohyang who we would have never heard of. But we have no one to share it with. Most of our acquaintances listen to the music they grew up with and will not change, they don't really us to share our explorations. This is a lonely feeling. Finding others, not just the reactor but all the thousands of subscribers and commenters out there who also like the wonderful stuff you've discovered is like coming home from a long, lonely trip. By the way, the music contest in Korea like Immortal Songs II are like western professional sports. Top pros duke it out on live TV. Not really anything like in the west.
Great reaction! As an operatic student and a vocal pedagogy nerd, I can tell you that I have yet to see a singer that bests Sohyang. People often compare Sohyang to singers like Dimash and Morissette, but anyone with an adequate knowledge about vocal technique will tell you that no one is even remotely close to her flawless technique. Some of her other well known performances include: I have nothing Arirang Alone Lean on Me You Raise Me Up Everyone (find English subtitles online)
I like seeing people's minds open up. Especially the ones who say, definitively, "I don't listen to that kind of music". I have always tried to get something from all genre's. The old song from "You Are A Child of the Universe " ... "even the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. " That's why I love reaction videos.
It's called perfection. Welcome to the world of Sohyang's fans. You will never leave. Check out Jona from Philippines. She is as good as it gets, and her heart is bigger than the moon.
Soyang é mais, muito mais do que uma excelente cantora, é um arquétipo de paz, amor e compaixão! Ouvi-la cantar aumenta os níveis de dopamina e endorfinas e produz um enorme bem estar, por isso é tão festejada!
we have a great community of people here !!! All of us can lift Rosalie and her family up in your thoughts and prayers no matter what we believe. Lets help her build a strong foundation to build upon. I'm believing for one million subscribers in 365 days. LET'S DO IT !!!
Was interesting listening to your opening monologue regarding bias and knowing what was going to come. She gets me every time too. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said people who enjoy reaction videos are living vicariously through the reactor trying to chase that emotional connection, similiar to drug addicts who are chasing that first high. At least that's why I enjoy watching reaction videos, forever searching for that emotional connection with others.
Great reaction! I was hoping you'd react to Sohyang. She's an incredible singer and healer. Another incredible artist I hope you react to is Hua Chenyu from China. "Nunchucks" is about balance, and it's a good first song. He also wrote a healing trilogy you might appreciate. Thank you.
Everyone is her MASTERPIECE. Shes only done it once as far as ive heard because its so difficult for her. Shes not only an amazing singed but a successful science fiction writer and a cancer survivor. Shes also battled hepititus from a blood transfusion and could have all the money and contracts and tours she wants but just wants to sing for the glory of god and to bring joy and to lift people up.
Thanks for this reaction, it was like no other. You got me ruminating. Just my sole (soul) observations here. Feel free to disregard. Experience is always dealt with through a bias. What is happening in any given moment is being reacted to with a mind that has built up ideas and concepts from a particular individual past. This past conditioning creates an illusion regarding time and experiences and influences any response to any moment, which often results in trying to escape from discomfort, and gravitate toward pleasure. This psychological movement invariably leads to a life of conflict with one's inner life, with the endless hope that things will get better in a future that doesn't even exist in reality. But to put a question to it, is psychological time (thought) even real, or if it is, is it the least bit accurate? Shortening the long story, I maintain that the conditioned mind can not solve this issue because it only uses the conditioned part to analyze it (that is all we have, a real Catch 22). But, (only a 'perhaps' here) if one approaches each moment with self-awareness (seeing the mechanical thoughts at work, not trying to control them), without a false future to run (project) to, there is a chance one will find a great space (and peace) hidden between the thoughts. Then the ego becomes far less the master. One would have to have an insight, a moment when they realize intensely, wordlessly, that there is more beyond the ego... then the world would not be as it is. Of course I am bias, ha ha, (like very, very many regarding this singer). So Hyang, to me, is the best singer I have encountered in a longish life. I really appreciate your thoughtful reaction to her incredible performance, one of the best live performances I have come across. I did not need, in the least bit, a bias confirmation. I know to the core how amazing this artist is. But I truly do love watching people listening to her for the first, second, third into infinity, times, whether they are musicians, experts or not. That is where the sharing with humankind comes in. It is also nice to hear breakdowns that bring out things I didn't catch. You were so honest about how her song struck you, even wordlessly. Thanks for that. Much peace to you.
This is indeed one of those comments I def. do not want to disregard! Thank you, Tom. For taking the time to watch and listen, comment and share your thoughts and impressions. I agree with you and find what you said to be very interesting and valid!! Regarding So Hyang, I agree she is special indeed. I just like reminding people of the bias confirmation ahead of time, as I have found that that is sometimes what people may look for. In this case it was easy to love and appreciate. Thank you again for your comment. Much peace to you too!
@@rosalieelliottofficial How kind of you to respond to my off the cuff cliff notes version of life (my apologies for being both long winded and somehow not including enough! LOL!) After all, our own self discovery can not be completely explained to another. Words are never the actuality, only a description of the actuality, thus always somewhat removed. But I digress again, haha! Also, I understood how you began the video trying to inform us that you would be honest with your assessments, your reactions. That is a welcome thing to me. Sharing anything with honesty makes for a more genuine exchange. And, around music, well, it is such an incredible place to congregate!
Great reaction! As an operatic student and vocal pedagogy nerd, Sohyang is the most technically complete vocalist I've ever seen. People oftentimes compare her to singers like Dimash and Morissette, but from a vocal standpoint I have seen no singer that can even come close to her level of perfection. Some of her other well-known performances include I have nothing Arirang Alone You Raise Me Up Lean on Me
This is the first time ive watched your video. The millionth time ive watched a reaction to this performance. I have got to say that your reaction and your well thought out commentary are an extreme breath of fresh air. The more you spoke, the more i wanted to listen. You seem to have wisdom and experience beyond that of which your beauty conveys. The longer i watched and listened, the more of a crush i started to develope. So this will be the only video of yours i will watch. I am a faithful man to my woman of 20 years. I am 41. The last thing i need is a dream lover. Lol. Seriously tho, I fail to notice a single flaw within you. May your beautiful soul flourish in all avenues you choose to venture. (I am terribly sorry to hear about the child youve been separated from. Its only temporary.)
Once again, queen So Hyang gives us an extraordinary performance as always, but the most extraordinary thing is what she transmits to her audience when she interprets her songs, she gives herself fully to each singular note that she sings with excellent control (I am not an expert in music). to be simple, humble, passionate, charitable and of course, gorgeous (we all know that) sharing moments of joy, peace, hope with her songs and non-profit performances to comfort people (and excuse me if I forget to something), my friend you have to be special. you don't buy that in the mall or internet, you don't learn at the university or practice in the gym, you have to be born with it, it's a gift that God gave her, ( heaven has to be pisst because they missing an angel & we r lucky cause she's here on earth) and you can c that in her videos ( Arirang Fate, Dear Love, Where Are You etc. etc. and Mona Lisa my favorite she got me with that one) the expression on the faces of her followers. admiration, happiness to be able to see her, passion when she sings, and the feeling that they express (crying but not from sadness, but from seeing the passion that she transmits, they know that she belongs to them and the feeling is reciprocal (video I Have Nothing ) in a beautiful way, Queen So Hyang I know that one day I will rest forever, but I know that wherever I am I will feel like I am in heaven remembering the moments I saw you singing those were magical moments, "life is about I said the moments we live, but better the moments that take your breath away, sorry if my comment was too long, I'm just a human being expressing what he feels, Tank you my Queen So Hyang
This was the first video of SoHyang I saw and she absolutely floored me then. If this is impressive, you'll be shocked to hear her take on 'You Raise Me Up'. It's like taking a rusty old Ferrari and turning it into a one-of-a-kind showroom masterpiece. Watching your facial expression was a blast. Great job.
❤❤❤Sohyang is my Queen of female singers!☺❤❤❤ She touches your heart because she sings with her heart, emotion og every she believe every words she sings...she personalize the words..! I have had a strong emotional to every of her many insane beautiful voice! SHe is blessed from above in my opinion! ❤
ok so today you get 2 messages from me I was sitting here and I listened to what you were saying a couple of time as someone who is getting older and as of a couple of years ago got slapped with reality that you never know when your going to leave this world with the passing of my wife with no rhyme no reason (all of a sudden I will tell you about that if you would like) I always thought that we would be together till we were old and gray watching our grandchildren grow up and that was taken in the blink of an eye literally and now I am quite often lonely and sometimes fearful of when is it going to be me and what am I leaving behind I have survived alot in my life even some that I probably shouldnt have and God saw me through those things it is the base of my faith in God but then there was that time period where I questioned everything right after my wife passed I had those big doubts and then questioned everything it took me a while to get my faith back but I did get it back and I still have questions (not doubt) but I understand there are things that we just cant understand so I go on I have been to pretty dark places in the last 2 years and I dont ever want to go back to them but I feel what you were saying an a really deep level. Thank you for really talking about real things and for building this community on that realness not just a reaction chanel a safe place to talk about the godd bad and the ugly sometimes it all comes together and makes total sense. Thank you also for everything you put into this I know that it can be draining and as for the people that give bad comments you have to ignore them you know you and this community wouldnt want you any other way with much love to you and yours have a beautiful day. sorry this is so long.
Willey, thank you so much for being vulnerable and real and sharing this here. Yes, I would like to learn more about what you said regarding all of a sudden. Hopefully when I have my patreon set up and when I do my first official live from the studio (coming soon) there can be even more opportunity to discuss further via live chats and Q&A and such. Working to create more space for community and convos. I am so sorry for what you had to go through. I can only imagine the pain you've faced and I am proud of you for not giving up. I def. understand the questions and re-gaining faith, but also understanding we can't understand or know it all - I guess that's why it's called faith. I know i've never met you in person, but it's a fact you're a real one and special and here for a purpose. Not just here as in on this channel, but here on this earth. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing. Sail on, Silver One! :)
First of all, you should know that she survived cancer. And read her brief life history. For example, pneumonia that has been hard on her for many years! And this review and reaction is also the history of your life. I will remember this video and your first history forever. Thank you for the good reaction and review.

When Sohyang sings, "When you're down and out.........I will comfort you," she isn't kidding. It is so comforting to listen to this.
I love So Hyang ❤️ Kisses from Italy 😘
Without a shadow of a doubt Sohyang is one of the finest singers in the world. She is so consistant and I have no idea how she generates the power from that slight frame. Try her song 'Everyone'. It is an emotional masterpeice and a reflection of how this beautiful soul lives her life. I don't normally look for subtitles but in this case they are essential to understand the context of the song. Sohyang sings in a mix of Korean and English and it is truly wonderful! :) ua-cam.com/video/S9J1k_zmo24/v-deo.html
You for finally finding one of the best singers of all time! So Hyang is a beast!
Warm welcome to So Hyang's world. She will bless your soul everytime!
so this Lady started her career in the early 90ies she no sooner started but then got ovarian cancer she prayed hard to god and made a deal with him .. if she could live through the cancer she would dedicate her life to him and so she did and the only regret she really has is she can't have any children .. but the people she mentors through South Korean university as the dean of music there she can at least help her students in any way she can thus spreading her joy to the world that way.. she has entered many music competitions and won most of the even retiring in certain ones so other people can have their time she shines she is so very humble
Sohyang, the world's best singer
Welcome to the Sohyang rabbit hole that most of us couldn’t get out of. Hope you do more of her covers/renditions, they’re all great performances.
She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on UA-cam.
Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: ua-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/v-deo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/v-deo.html
She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ua-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/v-deo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.)
So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being.

Many thanks. Always ^^v

The Best Version of Bridge Over Troubled Water in the world !!! 😘😘😘
I said that almost exact same thing when I watched it with my teenage son. I've never heard it any better even in my imagination.
Sohyang has one of the best MIX voices in the World.
Sohyang..I think she is not just perfect with her vocal skills but she really means what she sing. Every lyrics hit me so hard. I can feel her when she open her mouth. That is the experience.
good point! well said.
Amen
This performance is just tip of iceberg.. .
Thanks for your reaction of Queen Sohyang ♥
sohyang brings comfort and inspiration to many people.
Awesome reaction! Welcome to SoHyang's world! She is the only singer who can touches my soul all the time!
thank you :)
@@The_Sound_Doctor1957 I know she has turned down all large labels, I simply didn't mention that.
Glad you survived, that is quite the achievement.
@@joandsarah77 sorry...no accusatory tone intended. I was mostly putting that up for others since you already seem to know a great deal about her.
@@The_Sound_Doctor1957 That's okay. :)
It is lucky to listen to Sohyang's songs in this era. Looks like an angel from another world. 🇰🇷👍
I’ve watched this video for about five years many reactors there is probably no other singer on the planet who can shock in a good way.
Sohyang, the healer of the soul and the queen of gospel chants 💞💞👍
You've listened to one of the best singers on the planet today and technically perfect (based on opinions of experienced and knowledgeable vocal teachers (eg., Elizabeth Zharoff from Charismatic Voice, John Henny Vocal Studio, Roberto Delli Carri, Beth Roars, etc.). She is the queen of the mixed voice, belting, vowel modification, etc. (she has taught voice at a university). She can also sing rap, rock, jazz, etc. All of her performances are mini-masterpieces. I suggest the following:
1) Arirang Alone (Korean folk song)
2) I Have Nothing (Whitney Houston)
3) You Raise me Up (Josh Groban)
4) *Everyone- she has stated that this 7 minute masterpiece is her hardest song due to breath control. Be sure to listen to her performance that has SUBTITLES, which will make this song much more poignant.
5) Lean on Me (Bill Withers)- Michael Bolton was in the audience
thank you for the suggestions :)
@@jayholland2632 and also recommend “Forestella “ !!
Welcome to So Hyang World, Thank you for great reaction and looking forward to see more of So Hyang videos . Thanks

Sohyang. Angelina. Aurora. Set for years.
🤯😮😯😲omg Amazing thanks loved another great analysis
So beautifully and eloquently said! thank you for commenting. :) And for sharing what makes reaction videos to certain artists special for you.
Amen and amen!

Bold statement, I know. She touches your soul every time. You feel it, that's what separates her from the other great Diva's. Keep going with her, you just touched the surface, go deep with her 🙂. She is an angel 😇. 👍👍❤
Thank you :) looking fwd to listening to more :)
Blessings!
wow that is powerful and special. thank you for sharing.
Wow, I love it and very inspirational and may God bless you for being who you are
Thank you another great afternoon ride and I am glad that you always stick to your guns and let everyone know exactly what you do and that you are a true reactor I watch your face and actions and how the music affects you that is something you cant hide or fake your face says it all and I love that thank you for being just you again. I love her voice and she can move you in a very deep way she is someone I like to listen to when I am feeling down and lonely and she makes me feel so much better. This is the best cover of this song I have ever heard and I was a fan of the original for many years but I prefer this one now.
yessss finally!!! haha cant wait, i KNOW your heads going to explode!!
Look at Morissette Amon for instance - ua-cam.com/video/vqcxM7dSJtw/v-deo.html
An American example is Morgan James with Post Modern Jukebox - ua-cam.com/video/Yq4KA0mUnC8/v-deo.html

You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities.

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. Foster invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song.
Thank you for your comment :) more coming very soon.
I didn't think at all that I would receive such a beautiful message in a reaction video. Thank you for your encouraging words. God bless you.
One of the best reactions I’ve seen to this! Such a wonderful human being.
저보다 매우 감성적인 그대를 부러워하며 곡의 도입부에 흔들리는 분은 처음으로 보는듯 리엑션 고마워요 건강하시고 행복하세요 ^^
I recommend her performance of I have nothing next!
Not really anything like in the west.
well said. thank you for commenting and sharing :) that makes sense. oh wow interesting what you said about it being like sports.

Some of her other well known performances include:
I have nothing
Arirang Alone
Lean on Me
You Raise Me Up
Everyone (find English subtitles online)
I like seeing people's minds open up. Especially the ones who say, definitively, "I don't listen to that kind of music". I have always tried to get something from all genre's. The old song from "You Are A Child of the Universe " ... "even the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. " That's why I love reaction videos.
It's called perfection. Welcome to the world of Sohyang's fans. You will never leave. Check out Jona from Philippines. She is as good as it gets, and her heart is bigger than the moon.

This is the type of channel worth to subscribe for!

Welcome to the world of Sohyang the QUEEN!!
I just lost my best friend this weekend. This video was just what I needed. Thank you.
Scrolled through comments a bit, and i see no one recommending her performance of I HAVE NOTHING
That was a blast!
Dare I say, better than Whitney.
Thank you for sharing your reaction to this song! Subscribed!
Thanks for subbing! :) appreciate it
감사합니다 ~~♡우리 소향 리액션 ^^
Great job.
Thank you :)
❤❤❤Sohyang is my Queen of female singers!☺❤❤❤ She touches your heart because she sings with her heart, emotion og every she believe every words she sings...she personalize the words..! Same!
ok so today you get 2 messages from me I was sitting here and I listened to what you were saying a couple of time as someone who is getting older and as of a couple of years ago got slapped with reality that you never know when your going to leave this world with the passing of my wife with no rhyme no reason (all of a sudden I will tell you about that if you would like) I always thought that we would be together till we were old and gray watching our grandchildren grow up and that was taken in the blink of an eye literally and now I am quite often lonely and sometimes fearful of when is it going to be me and what am I leaving behind I have survived alot in my life even some that I probably shouldnt have and God saw me through those things it is the base of my faith in God but then there was that time period where I questioned everything right after my wife passed I had those big doubts and then questioned everything it took me a while to get my faith back but I did get it back and I still have questions (not doubt) but I understand there are things that we just cant understand so I go on I have been to pretty dark places in the last 2 years and I dont ever want to go back to them but I feel what you were saying an a really deep level.
