Bridge Over Troubled Water has always been such an emotional song for me, definitely one of the few songs that will always make me cry - this is clearly no acception.

Since back in 2015, I've encountered SoHyang Kim on UA-cam and I was dumb founded. Bridge over Troubled water was "Compelling". I have watched her covers over and over each, and was flabbergasted. SoHyang Kim you gave me strength to live. 진심으로 감사드립니다. CLL survivor remission since may 2021.
There was a TV program which was competition among professional singers in Korea, and Sohyang won it every time. She was and is perfect for me

Kim So Hyang's vocal type is a Full Lyric Soprano. Her showcased vocal range spans
from D3 to A6 (consistent supported range from G♯3 to E6),a total of three octaves,
three notes and a semitone. According to So Hyang, the highest note she can sing is
an E♭7. This means that she has an overall range of approximately four octaves and
one semitone. However, this range hasn't been showcased to its fullest extent yet,
as the highest note she has publicly showcased is A6. Her belting range/mixed voice
extends up to a Soprano C♯ (C♯6). She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals

She's a gospel singer. The arrangement is gospel. I believe she did the arrangement.
Sohyang sang for her church and she worked through dealing with cancer so another reason that makes this song hit super hard is because you can feel her emotion in it, she is being genuine and you can feel it. This version of this song always gives me goosebumps when she sings it.

We all tend to lose our minds when we first hear So Hyang sing, especially Bridge Over Troubled Water. Most of us (dare I say that?) consider this her best performance but she has so many colossally GREAT performances one hardly knows where to start. Since I discovered her one and a half years ago she has become my favourite singer by far. Here's a biography I wrote up about her so you can discover what an extraordinary person she is. By the way, you may not have noticed but So Hyang covers an _entire octave_ in just that first verse!

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ua-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/v-deo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on UA-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on UA-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018.

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang revealed that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉
I can confidently say this. If we picked her top 50 live performances and ranked them, her 50th ranked performance is better than 90% of all singers out there. That is how amazing her performances are and how huge her catalog is compared to other artists. Big name artists would be lucky to have 10 signature songs but So Hyang has over 50 easy, thanks to her recent performances from Begin Again.

She has one of the best voices ever... But she USES it better than anyone
If you want to talk about mixed voice, you can have a field day with Sohyang, who has truly mastered her mixed voice with control, agility and power. It's not unexpected for vocal coach to try to focus on the technical aspect of singing, but I do admire how you attempted to stay focused as you toiled to tame down the emotional impact this song has on you. Of course, as a Sohyang fan, I have seen many, and experienced myself, surrender themselves to her vocal magic. Yet you made the effort to relate your observation on the techniques for those with vocal aspiration.
While I was amazed repeatedly by what Sohyang can do technically, her ability to convey the emotional context is what keep her as my favorite singer for the past five years. Very glad you made your acquaintance with her in this performance, the same one that introduced me to her.

Great reaction, Jennifer. My first reaction to So Hyang was Arirang Alone and it's still one of my favorites. She is one of the most amazing female vocalists on the planet. Her pitch, control and emotive power are incredible. And she is just so decent and kind and humble. Others have made recommendations but of those I've reacted to, my top 3 for you would be: Everyone (English subs), Arirang Alone and Lean On Me. But any performance will be amazing. Love to watch you nerd out with describing what's going on with the vocal mechanism but mostly it was great to see the emotion of her performance touch you. Best of luck with your channel! Welcome to the amazing world of the 'queen of mix', sohyang, who has to be the most famous 'unfamous' vocalist in the world. Its hard to comprehend how someone so good isn't a household name, but that is her choice,she isn't interested in fame & fortune,refusing all offers from all the big record companies that have tried to sign her.
Although she is a gospel singer at heart,this wonderful lady can literally sing any genre,rock,pop,blues/jazz,the big ballads & can even be seen rapping in the song 'day day'. She is known as the 'queen of mix', for obvious reasons,although many refer to her simply as the 'queen' when dimash is regarded as the 'king' of vocals, but she can take her chest voice up really high & her transitions are so smooth that unless you concentrate or know what you're looking for (like a vocal coach such as yourself) its really hard to tell where the change took place. Although she can obviously go a lot higher,her signature note is Bb5, its a real sweet spot for her.
Besides been an excellent vocalist she is also a very accomplished arranger & is responsible for the whole arrangment of all the songs she performs,this was her arrangment of 'bridge over troubled water'. No matter what she is singing,there will always be something in her arrangment that differs from the arrangment dependant on the song & in the circumstances she is performing it. Some songs she changes quite drastically & others very little but only ever to improve the song,she is far too respectful to make a 'worse' version of a song.
If you are to futher explore the world of sohyang then you'd better get used to crying or nearly crying during a performance,even when she's singing in her native language. I dont understand a word of korean but when subtitles aren't available I can still be brought to tears by her performance & tbh, even when subs are provided,I find myself so mesmerised by her that I dont even read them anyway & whatever she is singing,she has this ability to make you feel you are the only one in the audience & she is singing just to you, so dont ever be put off watching her perform in korean. I would also suggest that you read her back story,why she's not famous & why she sings etc.
I am sure you'llbe bombarded with suggestions of what to watch next but I think 'bridge over troubled water' is many people's 1st experience of sohyang and quite often the next song that is recommended is a korean song called 'Arirang Alone' from the tv show 'immortal songs 2' which she rearranged & took it from a very simple folk song about the longing amongst the korean people that one day the north & south will once again live as one, to the more anthemic number you will hopefully experience, but tbh, anything by her will be worth your time,I have never seen a bad performance.

Beautiful reaction Jennifer ! I think it's time to focus and react to one of the most talented and unique young artist around Angelina Jordan ! I'm sure you most of her of her from Norway's Got Talent which she won at 7 years old ! ! At 8 she tore the cover of" I put a spell on you " in You Tube ! Her reduction of" Bohemian Rhapsody " on AGT the Champions edition when she was 13 was the most compelling and unique cover ever ! For those who love Dimash and Sohyang, another must see singer is Zhao Shen from China. Because of his small stature, feminine disposition and voice, he was often bullied in school. Never thinking that he had what it takes to be a singer, he went tot he Ukraine to become a dentist. While there, he was convinced that he did have a great singing ability, thus transferred his major to music. Thank goodness he did.
As an introduction into Zhao "Charlie" Shen, begin with his premiere performance on the Voice of China singing HuanYan. After this first video, move on to his versions of "Memory", and "Time to Say Goodbye".
For something different from him, watch his version of "Let It Go" and "Monsters".
Last, but definitely not least (there is so much more from him), enjoy the videos, "This is Me" and a very unique and fun song (one of my favs) "Da La Beng Ba". His biggest success is the song "Big Fish".

Hello Jennifer, first I want to thank you so much for all your engaging and really educating reactions. In the difficult time of the last two years they were a real comfort and joy to spend time with you and the way you react to music. It's funny but I first heard Morrisett's "Defying gravity" on your channel and was discovering that mind blowing rendition together with you. I know that this reaction to Sohyang's interpretation of the famous Simon and Garfunkel's song you made long time ago, but only now I have seen this very unique and very dear moment after the nineth minute where your more technical look met the message of this amazing song. For me it is so much an assuring message of somebody's/Somebody's care and sacrificing love for us. Sohyang literally seems to put all her strenght to convince us about it, although she herself was quite ill at that time. This is this crucial point where a song crosses the treshold between an artistic expression and the message of comfort and loving assistance in the real life, and from then on we feel it with our whole body and soul that it is the most important and serious matter. And I saw it in the way your face changed. Thank you very much! PS: By the way, I heard that same thing in two Morrisett's songs, first her "Could you be Messiah?" and then "Rise Up" which for me is a kind of reassuring answer to that question. And "Defying gravity" should be prescribed to everybody who feels down and out or depressed.
