Britt, well, you've done it. You are in Sohyang's World now - enjoy the journey. Just a bit of history about this elegant and beautiful lady. She started singing in church and grew up singing Gospel music. She learned to speak American English watching the Disney Channel and Pop music by listening to American singing stars. She has had no formal training except for a brief time with a vocal coach in the Nineties. She is 45 this year, so has been singing for over twenty-five years. She had cervical cancer at the age of twenty and believes that God saved her life so that she could devote her heavenly voice to comforting people who are struggling. You haven't heard of her because she has refused contracts with major music producers choosing instead to sing to bring joy to others. She does her own musical arrangements for her live stage appearances including the musical adaptation, the chorus and orchestra, the staging and lighting, and costumes. She is also an author and lectures on Music and Voice at University. There is more, but this could become a book. Next? ua-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/v-deo.html "I Have Nothing" [I Am a Singer Legend].
    Cheers.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ua-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/v-deo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere, and she actually came down with it in July 2022!
She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on UA-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on UA-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.
Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: ua-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/v-deo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/v-deo.html
She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ua-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/v-deo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.)
So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
    • First is a type of Korean traditional music.
    • Second is to burn incense on a burner.
    • Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334
Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: ua-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/v-deo.html
Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: ua-cam.com/video/rte-q3kunp8/v-deo.html
Her performance of "Fate" in Korean requires no translation: vimeo.com/198161448
And finally “Will You Be There”: ua-cam.com/video/nBdSpexUxik/v-deo.html
Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/v-deo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews.
    OK, I’ll stop gushing now.
Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/v-deo.html I know, bananas isn’t it?
Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

THANK YOU!!, BEAUTIFUL LADY, for the ENTHUSIASTIC/AWESOME reaction, to the PHENOMENAL So Hyang.
Trust and believe, this song showcases only a small fraction of the flexibility in her voice. Her range is RIDICULOUS and her breath control is INSANE and UNMATCHED.
Vocal coaches and opera singers, who have reacted to So Hyang agree, her vocal technique is FLAWLESS and EFFORTLESS.
    This performance was in 2015.
So Hyang is 44 years old now, and if possible, in 2023, she sounds better than ever.

So Hyang has been singing gospel her whole life, as you observed she can sing anyone out the door. Also she is an even better person, she has dedicated her life to helping others in their time of need and is truly a blessing for us. So Hyang took this iconic song by Simon and Garfunkel and gave us an incredible tour de force of vocal ability, simply mind boggling. BTW...So Hyang, her husband, and assistants, arrange every aspect of her live performances; the music, backing vocals, staging, etc.
'Bridge Over Troubled Water', was written by Paul Simon, and recorded in 1970, by he and his singing partner, Art Garfunkel. They were a folk duo, Simon and Garfunkel. This song has been recorded by many artists, including Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin. Aretha Franklin made it a gospel song.
So Hyang's song covers, in my opinion, make the original sound like a demo tape. She updates/elevates the song, to the point, you almost believe she was the first one to sing it.

Kim, So-Hyang (김소향) is a South Korean singer. Her stage name is Sohyang (소향). She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.
Here are several links to excellent performances by Sohyang. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities.

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. He invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.

She is a gospel singer. Her main genre is CCM. Most all vocal coaches who have critiqued her covers, say she is the best female vocalist on the planet. Rivaling Mariah, Whitney and Celine. Once you here several more of her covers, you will understand why. This was just a tiny nugget of what she can do. She also arranges all of her covers herself. She is the brains behind the backing singers and the orchestra. She works with them all during practices and tells them how SHE wants them to come in.

Thanks for your great reaction! So Hyang, to many, is the best female singer on the planet. She can sing anything, but certainly due to her roots in the church, she gravitates to gospel. This song, however, is a folk song from the late sixties by Simon and Garfunkel. She just re-arranged it and made it her own. She owned it. It is the best version ever done of the song, though some will stand by the original that has beautiful harmonies, but not the technical beauty and flexibility of So Hyang. She grew up never thinking she'd ever be a singer. She used to practice Mariah Carey's album 'Music Box' over and over and over. Then she met, through her eventual husband a family band (of which he is part). It was at 19 that she first started singing in public. I found all this out through a long interview on UA-cam. She has had very few lessons on singing, mostly self taught, though Seth Griggs (Michael Jackson's voice coach) did give a few pointers. She sings to bring joy to people, not to become reknown. It is evident that she brings the joy! For another day, there is "I Have Nothing' from the DMC Festival, her in a dark blue dress, where she may very well sing the greatest live version of that song, including the most incredible Whitney Houston (who I love). I know they would just love each other for they both are/were in awe of true musical talent, something this woman has on an otherworldly level... And there are many many more songs in Korean and English in this diva's repertoire. (She would never care to be called a diva, she is too humble). Thanks again!

It's a church song, alright. Welcome to the cathedral of Simon & Garfunkel. Paul Simon is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. He and his vocal partner Art Garfunkel cranked out a slew of hits back in the day. Art is the lead singer on this all-time classic. This woman is absolutely incredible, but you owe it to your self to hear the original as well.

You have listened to one of the greatest singers/vocalists on the planet. Experienced, knowledgeable, and published vocal teachers and coaches (eg John Henny Vocal Studio, Elizabeth Zharoff of The Charismatic Voice, Beth Roars, Roberto Delli Cari, and numerous others) have described So Hyang as technically perfect. She is the queen of belting, vowel modification, etc. Read her lengthy history by Todd Sauve in your Comments section. She is very humble and a devout Christian gospel singer who sings to comfort others.
You have listened to 3 of 5 my most favorite female singers: So Hyang, Morisette, Angelina Jordan. Try out Lara Fabian (great story teller and an idol of Dimash) and, if you want to go retro, Karen Carpenter from the 1970s (voted in 2010 the #96 of the 100 Greatest Singers, and by Variety (January 2023) #126 of the 200 Greatest Singers.

Your reactions are always great. I’ve never heard a cover version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” that was as satisfying as the original by Simon and Garfunkel. The song was written by Paul Simon and the lead singer was Art Garfunkel, and it just hit the right tone--so much so that it won a Grammy in 1971 for Song of the Year. Try their studio version, although their live versions are great too.

This was not a performance. This was a worship service, and she took the audience (and us) with her. Every song she sings has an obvious religious undertone, especially on these kinds of competition programs. But my absolute favorite of hers is "O Holy Night" she did for her church on Christmas morning a few years ago. I always lose it when she actually falls on her knees. ua-cam.com/video/RRkiZM3P_cQ/v-deo.html

Paul Simon tells an incredible story about writing this. Most songwriters complete songs after a period of time - sometimes a very long time. (Paul is renowned for taking a long time on his songs.) Paul says he wrote it very quickly while sitting on his bed one afternoon; one minute this song did not exist and 15 minutes later, there it was.
Songwriters talk about songs that were not written BY them, but written THROUGH them, sometimes feeling divinely inspired. Paul had meant for it to be just a "little hymn" but Art Garfunkel felt it needed to be more, so they added the dramatic orchestral interlude and the last verse. This song used to leap out of an AM radio like no other song could.
I don't know if we can post links here - my apologies if this is so - here is a very informative interview with Paul about the creation of this very powerful song, well worth watching, especially if you are a musician or songwriter (like myself). ua-cam.com/video/PTRFEBqYjNo/v-deo.htmlsi=3m-UisGcteheHTLp

This is nothing too. She's surely got the most best covers of songs. Nothing but epicness after epicness. It's a serious stack though. She even has one of the most fun rap performances ever too lol. She's got like a solid 20 in this league. Rapping Day Day from the masked singer may be the most fun one. She didn't even go high in this either fwiw. Try Lean on Me next. It's a party and yet again the best cover of that. Should hear her knock I have nothing out of the park. There's a ton more like maybe the most of anyone honestly.
