  • Whoa it's pinball, in 3D! And it's not just pinball, it's ULTRA pinball. If that's not a surefire recipe for success, what is? A review of Sierra's "fastest pinball in space" from 1995.

The boxed version I got as a kid was some kind of "Collector's Edition", with a short VHS on the history of Pinball, with commentary from Aerosmith's Joe Perry for some reason.

I own a later version of this game called 3D Ultra Pinball Thrillride. The feel of the game is pretty much identical to this, but it has a theme park look instead. The audio and graphics are much better as well.

3D Ultra Pinball Creep Night is the game that came inbetween Thrillride and this space one, and is worth checking out too.

"for one thing, the music and sound effects really leave something to be desired"....
Oh no, you did not just go there Clint. The insane electro-prog-metal midi soundtrack (sooooo mid-90's) is THE BEST THING about 3D Ultra Pinball!!! (Though yeah, the sound effects aren't great, I'll give you that).

Omg all these sounds and pictures gave me the biggest nostalgia hit I've had in YEARS. Idk why but I have really strong memories of this from my childhood. I was never good, I don't think I ever made it past the first table, but those sounds are so memorable.

You gotta do a review of Thrillride. It outdoes the standard 3D Ultra Pinball by leaps and bounds. Decided to play a few games recently and man those callouts are cheesy and hilarious!

    • @SupermarketSweep777

@@baddoomguy1986 Thrillride was one of my childhood jams back in the day. And living not terribly far from the real park, I can say Sierra did a really faithful job overall. While some rides are now gone, (RIP Canyon River Rapids and Flying Falcon. We truly miss you.) the environment and lines still holds up in all its cheesy fun.

I actually played to the end of the game where you have to beat all five minigames unique to each of the three tables, build a bunch of items, and then finally launch into space. The key is to get as many continues and extra balls through the points rewards system. It took maybe about 5 hours to pull it off, which is stupidly long for just pinball and sadly, after you do all that, it just resets everything and it looks like you just started.

I think I managed to launch the rocket twice in one game once, but I don't remember it taking that long to do once I got the game figured out.

This was my first with computers. Was born in 94’ and I dunno where this game came from, but I have the original copy, and a disk stamper burn that I use from time to time. Now you can just download it, but the original is in a safe 😂. Those 3 levels of music will never get old. Played on a Mac G3 originally, then my windows systems. Again, the original copy is in a safe. Means so much to me as a computer guy more than anything. Have lots of other sierra games, but as crapppy as this might be, it still hits home. Glad someone else is sharing this weird sierra game. Good memories.

What's odd about this game is the middle scoreboard. In 95' pinball machines were already hip deep into dot matrix displays (DMD), so it could have on screen animations on the playfield if the designers wanted to mimic modern pinball machines of the time.

You know what's funny... You can get minigolf holes from all of those things in 3D Ultra Minigolf Deluxe. Judging by what you're referring to, those holes would be Dinosaur, Drive In Movie, Jungle Ruins and what comes to mind when thinking of rodents would be The Incredible Machine and The Even More Incredible Machine (Yes, they actually made minigolf holes out of those games too!)

I remember seeing this and Outpost for $2-5 each in big computer stores back in the day, along with many other Sierra games. By the mid-90's the general cheesiness and hit-or-miss quality of Sierra games was at an all-time high, and prices were low not long after a game was released. Sad stuff considering how they were at the top of many genres on the PC just a few years before.

I used to play the crap out of Space Cadet when I was a kid. I remember I could just keep making that shot into the bumpers on the left and after upgrading them a few times the score would become hilariously high.
The Pinball Arcade by Farsight Studios has to be my favorite though. The fact they use real tables is what drew me, but the ball physics are actually quite good. They aren't perfect physics, and hiccups have happened to me, but it's pretty rare. I got so addicted to Black Hole, Monster Bash, and No Good Gofers for the longest time. There was a Whirlwind machine in a pizza place near me, that is obviously gone now. So being able to play Whirlwind and hear that "the storm is coming!" really great. Now if only I could time my fan to blow in my face at the correct times...

  • @NJRoadfan

Space Cadet was a table from Maxis' Full Tilt! Pinball. It wasn't included with Windows 95, you had to get the Plus! pack which included it. Microsoft bundled it with every version of Windows thereafter.

Nooo! You are completely and utterly wrong! 3D ultra pinball is amazing and by far the best pinball game for Windows 95. It has an actual space setting with the coolest special effects and the changing layout with bonus areas make every stage 3 times better than those found in other pinball games. You can spend hours upon hours playing this game without getting bored because it really is that awesome!
Though I do have to admit that I haven't played the game in over 20 years and I was pretty young at that time so my memories of the game might not be perfectly accurate...

3D Ultra Thrillride is my favorite out of the 3D Ultra Pinball series. I also used to play 3D Ultra Minigolf and 3D Ultra Lional Train Town. I didn't have the deluxe version of them but they were still really fun. My copy of Traintown doesn't work right now, it's really scratched and my copy of 3D Ultra Minigolf is scratched but still works except for the voices, they won't turn on in the options.

Amazed you can still buy it. The Pro Pinball series are impressive to me, can be quite difficult to get to run though; they insist on launching at a higher task priority which messes things up. Just switch them down to normal and they run fine most of the time.

Yes, the ball movement just feels "off" somehow. There are some definite problems with the physics too, like the ball not speeding up in the right places or passing through a bumper or something weird. But the wonky movement is my biggest issues with this one. Creep Night and Thrillride are my favorites of the 3DUP series, and they improved the ball movement somewhat though it's still not ideal.

I'd also highly recommend Pinball FX2/Zen Pinball for modern consoles, those are some of the best pinball games I've played.

The one I remember playing the HECK out of, at least out of the pinball genre back when, Was 3D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night. Such a nostalgia overload. I really wish they would update those tables with the mechanics and everything of how The Pinball Arcade manages its physics and everything.

  • @LGR
    @LGR  11 років тому

Not entirely sure. I loved real pinball games as a kid, and have loved them ever since. There's something inherently awesome about the physical-ness of it. Obviously, I am a big fan of actual pinball sims. But even if it's not the most accurate simulation, I like that computer pinball can do things that are impossible in real physical life.

I remember that game (and Creep Night; still have both around here somewhere)...they were okay but definitely not my favorite video pins.
Ever try Microsoft Pinball Arcade? Tables modeled on classic Gottlieb tables, and even though the game came out around 1998 or so, it still works great even on modern systems. I have it configured to work with my Tankstick in an old Pengo cab.
The Pro Pinball Series by Empire/Another Cunning Development were also very good video pins.

" Cheap as BALLS" LMFAO I would have to agree, Sierra were Kings of Cheesy Games in the early PC gaming genre. However, they did manage to also create some of the most memorable games by the late 80's early 90's.

Great review! I remember playing this one quite a bit back in the '90s, but in ways it seems like it hasn't held up all that well. I think Creep Night was a better effort with slightly better music and what not, but I feel one of the biggest issues in these games holding up better than they do is the wonky ball movement. Maybe not even so much the physics specifically, but the way that the ball doesn't roll completely smooth--it's kind of choppy. Even the Mac version I have has the same problem.

Ah, okay! This thrift store tapes their CDs shut and I wasn't finding system specs on Google. I currently have 8MB but it will be 32MB soon enough.

I think one 2D pinball series that has always had spectacular graphics and amazing sound are the Pro Pinball games by developed by Cunning Developments. These series of tables feel like a spiritual predecessor to the Pinball FX/Zen Pinball games. You wouldn't happen to have these games would you?

Finally a review. I love them. But can I ask one thing, can you please make "LGR Plays - The Bindings of Isaac"?

I agree completely. I have a copy of Big Race USA on PSX but sadly I lost the manual and now the disc is all sad and lonely.

I was really good at 3D Pinball: Space Cadet. Not so much with 3D Ultra Pinball: Creep Night, but I got that one after I had been playing Space Cadet for a long time.

Clint when I was a kid there was some kind of pinball game on the Windows 98 SE Install disk... can't remember the name though.. I found it awsome, but only some halloween styled table worked in the demo version and the full version had lots of tables from pinball history.. looked freaking good, I always drooled on it :D

Lazy Gamer, you ever going to talk about the more superior 3D Ultra Minigolf? That was one of my favorite games growing up :)

I don't wanna be an ass, but I gotta say LGR, you are head and shoulders above everything else at Retroware... and that ain't no easy feat!

Well you nailed the pinball right on the head, I think I worded it wrongly, the rodents weren't really living in the jungle, I barely played the 2nd one I think I saw the intro and it either possibly crashed or I gave up or something as it felt like some sort of adventure game as there was some mystery/plot taking over the world or something and that's why I mentioned chip and dale. I think I remember some weasel wearing sunglasses, maybe I'm confusing things.

@phreakindee i'm pretty sure I sent my actual old recovery disc for my first computer. the disc had NEC branding and a ton of useless programs, but also some interesting things like a fmv introduction to Win95 by some dude in a wizard costume. it's an interesting look at what the average commercially bought pc came with...
