A lot of people are judging this movie as a collection of references and not as an individual piece of art. There are genuinely people praising this movie and acting like it’s going to be the best movie ever because it has the theme song in it. We’re so caught up in nostalgia culture by this point that we have collectively lost the ability to think critically about pieces of media that are “reminiscent” of our childhoods.
We haven’t seen the movie yet. The trailer showcases references and recognizable set pieces because it’s trailer fodder. It’ll draw the audience, so that’s why it’s the focus of the trailer. Like with The Lego Movie, from the first few trailers it just looked like a typical kids film about a popular franchise throwing many recognizable WB franchises at your face. But it turned out the actual movie was pretty good in its own right and was a bit more than just references for 90 minutes. We’ll just have to see.
Disagree. People are judging this TRAILER as a collection of references. Nobody is going to rate the movie on it’s own until it’s been shown from start to finish. Look no further than the Sonic movie. People were overjoyed with the changed design but then the movie came out and (almost) everyone collectively agreed that it was just meh. What I’m trying to say is, people can be hyped for the trailers now but nobody is thinking the movie itself is great yet.
And it isn’t like you know… Sonic 2 where the film managed to tell a good story to expand the original and even adapted Sonic 3 (the game) story. That’s not to say Sonic 2 was great or anything as it still had a lot of the kids movie tropes, but it was a damn good and entertaining sequel that did everything the original did but better. My issue with Mario is that its so heavily having game references that the overall movie I feel will be cringe. A part of me is curious, but I know this movie will get nothing but average reviews across the board. Of course, toxic fans are calling this “peak fiction” despite the movie NOT EVEN BEING RELEASED YET
Soooooo why didn't they just get Charles Martinet exactly? The dude's still alive, and this is an animated movie. You don't need a younger actor for a voice role.
I'm not even convinced by the "his usual Mario voice would get annoying" argument. Charles Martinet is a real voice actor, one who's been doing the voice for three decades at this point, I don't doubt he knows how to make it work for a feature length movie.
@@Sugarman96 He would have to talk with a more normal voice at times, because the game Mario voice works only because you hear it at times. "Itsamee! Wohoo!". Those work, but picture him reading Shakespear with that voice, does not work. And if he used a normal voice he would sound like a 80 year old man.
Thing I'm frustrated about the most with Chris Pratt is that even if you weren't gonna get Charles Martinet, there'd still be much better choices then Chris Pratt. To name one, I think Danny Devito would've been a good choice (he was actually approached for the original movie). Even Bob Hoskins was a better choice.
It's like speaking the words from an Italian accent in an American accent. Like not actually speaking IN the Italian accent, but rather wrote down a sentence from somebody with an Italian accent and all the little unique sounds that come along with it, then just read it in an American accent.
The thing I don't get about some people's defensiveness over the Mario movie is defending the studio, really. People know what kind of films Illumination makes, we know about what level to expect this to be at. So why pretend otherwise just because it's an IP that you like? I don't even think I'll really dislike this movie, but man going to bat for it this early feels ridiculous to me.
Obnoxiously defensive fans are always annoying for sure, but I’d also prefer if people wouldn’t just wait to see if a film is good or not before completely writing it off.
I don't have a horse in this race but this looks significantly better (visually at least) than any other movie they've made up to this point. The reaction from both sides has been ridiculous. About a movie that isn't even out yet.

I think the bubbly curvy character design is kind of cute and fits the mario universe. Almost reminds me of play dough for some reason. I don’t really like the character voices. I think they should have been more cartoonish and less modern sounding. Overall it doesn’t upset me as much as Adum. I think I’d enjoy watching it with my friends 5 and 7 yr old boys to see their reaction. Probably wouldn’t feel pulled to sit down and watch it solo though.
Agreed on the style. It does have a clay texture, especially the Toads. I imagine they feel like those squishy stress balls that slowly inflate back to form that are super popular now.
Also voicing an entire main character thats just cracked out Jack Black for Brutal Legend, clearly having some love for Undertale, and other things through the years show he at least know what the franchise is before showing up (every chrisp rat line reads like he has never heard of anything mario)
My favorite part is that they kept Mario's catchphrases and sound effects, and yet he just sounds like some schlub from California who works at a hardware store. It doesn't work at all, and I feel like even children will be able to tell how off that is.
I feel like the worst thing a voice actor for an iconic character can be is non-committal. Just go for it, dude. All the other actors feel at the very least inspired.
People are saying that the accent is special because it’s “supposed” to be a Brooklyn accent, but it still doesn’t work because it still sounds like Chris Pratt.
I don't know if I just can't tell cringe from actual enjoyment anymore, but the dead-serious "let's-a-go" made me happy; it seemed like a parody of a movie adaptation.
honestly, bad casting aside, I wish they would just go back to hand drawn 2D animation since most CGI based animated movies tends to blend together now a days due to the style and look of the CG effects always looking too similar. plus, I just miss traditional 2D animation in general which always looks better to me, especially since you don't get that uncanny valley effect & rubber band physics that never looks natural to me.
@@soapbiter36577 except it does. literally every single CG movie looks the same since they don't change the art style whatsoever. if you compared the CG to a movie like this to a Disney CG animated film, they would look exactly the same in terms of the animation and art style. and since this style of animation has oversaturated the market with most animated films having the same exact type of look to them, it's easy to see why I would make this kind of statement. with 2D animation, you can go in any direction and use any kind of art style, but people seem to think that it would cost more money but I find it hard to believe. I also find it hard to believe that people would look at how many CG animated films has came out within the past decade and not see a repetitive issue.
@@EpicJasonX9000 This movie does not have the same art style as luca, or the bad guys, or puss in boots, or across the spider verse, or the most recent dragon ball movie. It's fine if you prefer 2D movies but it's a bit unfair to have such a reductionist look on cg as a medium.
Do that, skip hiring the celebrity voice actors, and pipe all the extra money you would have spent on animation and the celebrities into the writers and jokes. Instant classic.
@@soapbiter36577 no, it's completely fair since the market is oversaturated with CG animated films. and since many of them have very similar art styles, they come across as the same since there's very little differences in order to separate them. I didn't say they have the same "exact" art style, don't misrepresent my point. what I'm saying and what you've failed to understand is that since the art style, designs, and execution of the CG animation looks so similar to most CG animated films that has been released within the past decade, they blend together as all looking too similar. and since there's no 2D animated films to compare & contrast, it comes across as jarring to see every single animated film use CGI and always seeing the same type of style, facial animation, movements, designs, and even backgrounds always being used and reused. it's not a reductionist look, it's a fair criticism and an observation that you're just overlooking. it's so uncreative and unoriginal to keep using CGI when traditional 2D animation can fix a lot of the problems that comes with CGI like the uncanny valley effect which is still an issue. most CG animated films now a days have too similar art styles, so, it is completely fair for me to say that they all look the same.
Another reason why I hate for voice actors to be celebrities only chosen upon star power and not talent is that it rips an ACTUAL voice actor or perhaps some new undiscovered talent from the spotlight. Call me an old cynical fart but I hate knowing that these animated movies are all going to make some 100 millionaire plastic arse celebrity a tad bit richer by annoying me with a mediocre performance for 2 hours when I wanted to hear THE CHARACTERS I CAME TO VIEW.
I feel like they could make bank on a Mario CGI tv series with this same style. The Sonic Boom show was successful and Mario's one of the most recognisable characters on the planet, with adult and kid fans alike, so why don't they?
Idk, I thought he would at least _attempt_ to do a stereotypical New York accent or something, even if it was bad. But he didn't, he's just doing his _own goddamn voice._ And so is Anya Taylor Joy! And I guess so is Charlie Day, but at least Charlie has a naturally Luigi-esque voice.
Chris Pratt is only taking inspiration from The Super Mario Bros: Super Show 🤨 Like how are you people hating on this movie because of him?! I think he's gonna do a fantastic job of portraying his Brooklyn New York voice for Mario instead of an Italian accent! 😌
While I'm by no means excited for this film and kind of annoyed by what it will likely turn out to be, I gotta admit that Luigi's scream of pain made me laugh
He’s slowly realizing how Jack Black is the only real VOICE actor on display and everyone is becoming increasingly dogshit alongside him because he’s actually trying
Honestly it looks like the most generic milquetoast movie, super safe, doing nothing interesting, designed to appeal to the normies. The Mario theme as a movie orchestral sounds so bad. I just can't with this. Like princess Peach is the generic girl boss so they don't get accused of being sexist, Mario is a bumbling idiot that somehow becomes the best hero ever of all time, it's been done a billion times already.
But mario failing at first is actually a really great way at representing the games. When someone plays mario for the first time, they die a lot. Also if you didn't like the trailer song, I would recommend watching the game awards clip. The music in the movie sounds great so far
People are shitting on Chris pratt's voice in these trailers (which is deserved, its awful) but MAN. I cannot stand peach's voice. She just sounds like some random girlboss archetype with her sassy "no pressure xx" one liner in the trailer. Why do all the voices in this movie just sound like regular people doing their regular voices? Why couldn't they just give Princess Peach the high pitched sugary sweet voice she's always had?
The way they designed Peach is so bad 💀 like her body looks both way too thin but also super soft in a weird way and her face looks odd because of her nose. It's just so funky looking
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the gripe people had with the last reaction was the comment on it being "over animated"? I don't know of anyone who thinks Chris Pratt's performance is anywhere close to being good.
2:24 I'm glad that Seth Rogen didn't voice yet as stoner gorilla so since they're doing more clips and trailers, it will spoil enough for this. They already did few performances and I love the choice of putting Charlie Day as Luigi (perfecto Italian voice ever) and Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach which saved a bit in her cutesy role. Even Keegan-Michael Key sounded almost close to the Toad cartoon from Super Mario Bros Super Show.
I’m excited for it because I like Mario. I don’t know why people shit on it for having a lot of references. Should the movie not reference anything at all, no power ups and be different than the actual game? I feel like they are doing a great job of portraying the mario world in a movie setting so far. Though I will admit the writing probably will be ok at the very best. And some of the voices could use some rework and some could use a recast (mario).

You can make a kid's movie good for adults. Best example of this in my life is Big Hero 6. Genuinely good movie, very well paced, cool world, good character arcs and the first time I saw it I was 21 years old. No nostalgia associated with it. It is a movie made for kids but with plenty of adult themes which is how children's movies should be.
i personally dislike big hero 6, but i can see the charm. Personally I'd think of classic Disney/ Pixar movies, Ghibli Films and some Dreamworks films. Hell, the movie that most resonates with me in this regard (being enjoyable for both kids and adults) might be the iron giant!
@@philatio1744 That's fair. I just think it was actually aiming to do something cool and unique and discuss hard topics that so many awful kids movies hold your hand through. And yeah, Studio Ghibli sure. I also still get loads of enjoyment out of movies like Chicken Run and Emporer's New Groove. They just have more subtlety and intrigue than baby glove kiddie movies like this piece of shit.
Another example is, ironically, the Sonic movies. They're obviously aimed at kids but had humour and story elements that adults could enjoy (e.g. "look what came out of my eggsack" from the first movie.)
"How do we get around this offensive italian accent?" "Idk, hire an Italian voice actor and it won't be offensive." ....... "Nah we'll just hire Chris Pratt that seems like the cheaper and easier option."
A good way to say what’s wrong with Pratt’s voice is that he’s not trying. If he did his own voice as Mario, but tried with effort and emotion, people wouldn’t be so harsh on him.

@@ohemdoublegee Arin's been notoriously a dick to his friends back then like Jontron and Chris O'Neil with OneyPlays, now few people from those days want to associate with him
I have to agree with Adam. This movie is more for kids. It is better for any adults to watch this after the dvd/blueray/streaming service is available. Anyone can go into the theaters, but the theater is mostly going to filled with hyperactive kids, and it is more for them to get into the Mario series.
See I don't actually think this has children as its main demographic. It's leaning way too hard into nostalgia, I think this is an adult film that's trying to pass itself off as a children's film to give parents plausible deniability by taking their kids to see it.
After the movie comes out there should be a re-dubbed version with different Mario, Luigi, and maybe even toad voice actors. Maybe some different lines too. Like an Abridged Mario movie.
He’ll be useless, Peach will save him constantly, until the end when she’s getting overwhelmed he’ll suddenly do everything effortlessly and get her back on her feet so they win together
6:04 Adum, I believe it was called the Emoji Movie. All honesty I think this movie might do a good job, Illumination has a record of going on a positive to mixed level of reception. I don't really care if Chris Pratt is mario, all I want to see is what the plot is, and overall I am happy they arent going on that damsel in distress scenario that is overplayed in those mario games.
Princess Peach with an edged weapon is very disturbing. Mario characters tend not to weild weapons designed for murder like guns or halberds. Princess Peach skilfully picking a halberd off the ground really makes the magical, colourful world of Mario this movie is making an attempt to portray crumble in on itself.
Chris Pratt using Mario-isms with just his own voice, Peach having a generic white girl voice and clearly being turned into Illumination's own discount Disney princess with a dash of gratuitous girlbossification, Toad being more token black sidekick than Toad, generic rubbery Western CG expressions, tons of "HEY MEMBAH THIS FROM THE GAMES?!"... Yeah, this is looking more and more like Jack Black and maybe Charlie Day are the saving graces of this whole thing. Also, no joke, I literally saw people in the comments for the trailer saying they began crying tears of joy at the Mario Kart scene and that their hopes for this movie are soaring after hearing Peach and shit like that.
LOL! My favorite part of this whole ordeal and experience is that you were totally correct about your entire prediction. Are you a prophet? Anyway, what's your overall review for this Illumination dumpster fire?
Bottom of the barrel is right. ...Grown-ass adults will literally be in the theatres, clapping like tiny babies for this, and that just makes me so, very happy.

I dunno. I won’t be watching the film anyway but I like Adum and his opinions on film and just in general, it sucks that something like this might be good and still manage to fumble the bag on hiring proper voice actors.
Exactly. You don’t want to be thinking of Jack Black or Chris Pratt or any actor when watching a cartoon… That’s why these celebrity castings are stupid: kids don’t care, and adults get distracted… with no help to the financial bottomline… actually, they hurt the bottomline, because celebrities cost more money than regular voice actors.

It’ll be her first theater experience, and I’m excited about it. The first movie I remember seeing in theaters was Independence Day and I was scarred with childhood trauma scared of aliens for a while as a result, so Mario will definitely be a better experience haha
Honestly I think Adam's being too hard on this. I get many of his criticisms, but honestly, this movie is clearly being made by people who actually care about the games in a way that few game movies do. I don't expect it to be high cinema or anything, but it looks fun at least, which is not true for nearly every game movie. Watch the clip from the game awards and you can see the care going into the animation and music and world. It looks like it's made by people who love Mario and not just studio execs. I hope that's enough to at least make it illuminations best film. Which would not be a high bar to hit.
I disagree, sure passion is present but you could say that about any adaptation. Of course there's likely at least one person who cares, but this just looks so bottom of the barrel, nothingness, pond scum, regardless if people 'cared' or not. Because even if they showed such passion at the Game Awards will it translate? And how much of that passion were they actually allowed to pursue? Cus you realise them saying all those things could be a massive lie or half-truth because of course they'd say that, they're advertising their movie ffs. So no I don't think Adum is being too hard on it, it's a multi-billion dollar franchise with all the resources you could ever need and they make this and cast these actors. Silent Hill is an actually good example of people who cared heavily about the project! Not a great film, it's just fine, but it's miles ahead when it comes to passion!
I think people are just excited about a faithful video game movie. This is like one of the first super faithful ones I've seen to be honest
I mean the movie isn't out? That's kinda job of trailers ffs
Soooooo why didn't they just get Charles Martinet exactly? The dude's still alive, and this is an animated movie. You don't need a younger actor for a voice role.
I'm not even convinced by the "his usual Mario voice would get annoying" argument. Charles Martinet is a real voice actor, one who's been doing the voice for three decades at this point, I don't doubt he knows how to make it work for a feature length movie.

honestly, bad casting aside, I wish they would just go back to hand drawn 2D animation since most CGI based animated movies tends to blend together now a days due to the style and look of the CG effects always looking too similar. plus, I just miss traditional 2D animation in general which always looks better to me, especially since you don't get that uncanny valley effect & rubber band physics that never looks natural to me.
I miss 2D animation too but totally disagree about every cg movie looking the same
@@soapbiter36577 except it does. literally every single CG movie looks the same since they don't change the art style whatsoever. if you compared the CG to a movie like this to a Disney CG animated film, they would look exactly the same in terms of the animation and art style. and since this style of animation has oversaturated the market with most animated films having the same exact type of look to them, it's easy to see why I would make this kind of statement. with 2D animation, you can go in any direction and use any kind of art style, but people seem to think that it would cost more money but I find it hard to believe.

I just can't with this. Like princess Peach is the generic girl boss so they don't get accused of being sexist, Mario is a bumbling idiot that somehow becomes the best hero ever of all time, it's been done a billion times already.
But mario failing at first is actually a really great way at representing the games. When someone plays mario for the first time, they die a lot. Also if you didn't like the trailer song, I would recommend watching the game awards clip. The music in the movie sounds great so far

It is a movie made for kids but with plenty of adult themes which is how children's movies should be.
i personally dislike big hero 6, but i can see the charm. Personally I'd think of classic Disney/ Pixar movies, Ghibli Films and some Dreamworks films.

Especially because right beside her is a toad wielding a frying pan. You know, the weapon peach has actually used many times in the games.

This just seems so soulless and empty, made by a machine.
@@TheCraftedCreepers95 So what exactly makes this look "bottom of the barrel nothingness pond scum"? Also, if the Mario movie looks like pond scum to you, then what is Illumination's "Minions" to you? Because Minions is something that is clearly a soulless product even from the first trailer, clearly made just to promote the Minions. Meanwhile, I dont see how the Mario movie looks like it's made by a machine.
@@crfstewarje Why doesn't it look like pond scum to you? From the terrible, cringe dialogue to the predictable looking plot along with tropes and sequences which have been done many times before. Bad casting and the whole general track record of Illumination makes the film from the get go look bad. You mention Minions so if that looked soulless why do you feel so different about this? When knowing damn well it's by the same lazy cash grabbing animation studio. Or is it just because you like Mario? You don't believe the same studio who made the Minions (a film you agree is soulless) and mostly awful lazy animated films are going to do better this time? Like honestly? Really?
@@TheCraftedCreepers95 I barely see any terrible cringe dialouge here. The only thing that even comes close to what you are saying is the Toad's "We're adorable". And even then, that's corny, but not bottom of the barrel. Also, predictable looking plot and tropes that have been done many times? You do realize that something can be predictable and have tropes that have been done before but still be *well executed* , right? Look at DreamWork's "The Bad Guys". That's a kid's movie that didnt do anything knew, but people liked it, because of it's execution.
@@crfstewarje you mean 'you' liked it because of its execution. I don't remember ever seeing anyone say that about that film, or any film for that matter. but seriously? Your test for a good movie worth watching is if its well executed? They all look professionally made because they are! Doesn't mean it's a good film just because of that fact. I wholey disagree about Toad as that was cringe af and not funny and it is bottom of the barrel, along with Mario's first lines in the trailer. Awful. Why would you want to see a film which is predictable and tropy? "Just because it looks well executed I gotter see it" ????? Wot??
To be fair, much like Sonic The Hedgehog, I myself don’t have nostalgic attachment to the Mario franchise except for the classic Super Mario Bros. Yet, I still find it the movie anticipating.
