One of the funniest things I've seen from this "controversy" is somehow people are dragging Ralph and Alex into this via guilt by association despite I don't think either of them have said anything about the Mario trailer.
I am one of those people who don't use Twitter and I have noticed that most of the time when UA-camrs I follow respond to the drama they have I have absolutely no idea what drama they're even talking about because it seems like it almost always starts from Twitter. :D
@@trash_chan Use twitter for a month and then stop. You'll be amazed how all those things that seem to matter just vanish and don't affect anything. That place is worse than 4chan.
@@JrIcify You’re not lying. 4chan is at least fully transparent in it’s toxicity and totally insular. Twitter is full of toxic, angry people who think they’re so righteous, and their nonsense actually has some tangible influence on the real world and others’ lives. Twitter is garbage.
The fact that most of his audience is off Twitter makes so much sense bc it also explains the unfinished movie drama. Like YMS fans seem pretty chill from my experience so I had no idea where this was coming from
We'll shit all over your favorite movie but it's not personal. Some communities make it extremely personal, or they'll take it personally when you're just talking about a movie. The real ones know better than that.
@@Morten_Storvik See that's funny, because the things I REALLY like or enjoy I don't even share or ask for an opinion. Not because I don't want to hear negative reception, but because I'm probably spending that time watching or doing those things as we speak, even right at this very second. If you like something, you don't waste time telling everyone about it.
see I do think its over animated, but I dont think it's horrible or distracting. like, once you mentioned it I was like "sure they just made him move way too much for one line" and it would have been better had they dialed it back. but still, this entire trailer in general was just wayyy better than I imagined it would be (aside from Chris Pratt's terrible performance).
@Kureiton He made a big deal out of a nitpick? He's not the one who's creating a shit storm because he said "Everything is fine except this thing." If he has nothing to critique except one thing, of fucking course he's going to go in depth with that one thing. He admitted this in the video. And what he said is his preference. This line of logic, that someone is shielded from critique based on socioeconomic or societal pressures, can be applied to every single medium conceivable. This wouldn't even have been an issue if the insane among Twitter hadn't went ape shit about a single critique. You're projecting way too hard into this and making it an emotional/moral argument when he literally said "I don't like this. It's bad. It's over animated". Like it's insane that you try to invalidate a stance based on "you're critiquing someone that doesn't have it good on average probably, therefore you're a bad person and your take is invalid." He's a critic. Making content off his critiques. Critics don't go "there's absolutely nothing wrong with what I'm watching". If what they're watching is good, they'll NITPICK. Because that's what critics are. If you can't handle critics and start perceiving them as some sort of evil attack then maybe this content isn't for you and you need to return to think-bubble twitter.
@@Scyborg832 Lotta words. Too bad they don't mean anything. I can still critique his critique and find it lacking. You can't say "they're just doing their job so you can't have issues with it. You're wrong" and think it makes you sound smart.
I'm in a similar boat. In the reaction video, I didn't really get what he meant by "overanimated", especially with Adam's example that he did where he flailed his arms like a drama student. With this one, I get that Bowser had a few too many different "poses" in the scene and it could have looked better, but I still don't see it as a huge deal. Not that Adam is the one making it a huge deal, but even the amount of attention he gave it in the original reaction seemed too much in my opinion.
Adum saying that subtle movements are more artful than overanimating is wrong when neither is inherently better than the other, it's how the animation is done & how it services the work. Even if overanimating doesn't help the Mario Movie, saying its animation is "less/not artful" sounds more like a personal preference than actual critique.
I mean you can say that it's not more or less artful, but if you actually go and watch any sort of basic lesson about how to express weight/power in animation, you learn that if you want to portray a character in that way, you use slow but impactful movements. You can see this for bowser in things like super smash brothers where many of his attacks have a slow start up to portray the power behind them. Having him be animated the way he is in the trailer undermines the entire concept of him being this large, powerful villain.
I think the "Now who's gonna' stop me?" Is ADR for the commercial, where he's actually saying "Now no one can stop me". It would make _way_ more sense if his excited, open-mouth expression was for 'can' in such a sentence. That's half the problem. I don't know why they ALWAYS do that these days. They frigging always have one or two scenes with replaced audio and it *always* looks like crap. It just makes the movie look like sh*t when the lip sync is bad and the writing comes off as dumb because the whole character of the scene has been changed. Either make a whole different scene for the preview or use a deleted scene. Ruining scenes from the movie for a preview is beyond obnoxious.
Playing devil advocate, the ADR in trailers are made for cohesion more than anything, since the next scene is made to establish who Mario was, the scene before needed something to go smoothly into that; hence the change in dialogue. While I cannot vouch for every movie trailer, it does make sense on this one.
@@DeathnoteBB is that an attack on Adum? Because he's not throwing a shitfit at all, he sounds quite apathetic about it and even says in this video he thinks it's fine if you like it personally. If anything, it's the responders throwing a shitfit
Eh I mean yeah, it's overanimated and looks weird, i agree on that front, but Adum was REALLY laying into it. I don't think it's fair to say "I just said I didn't like it" when he was replaying it over and over and constantly saying that it's awful. After a point it stops feeling like a criticism and more just hate, which is fine if you're transparent about it but acting like it was simply fanboys overreacting to criticism is not the best look imo. In the end though it's just a guy making fun of a movie so I don't think the twitter mob was warranted, there was just a better way to handle the response I think. But the criticism given here was a lot more on track with what I was hoping for. Personally I thought the trailer was fine. Jack Black did an alright job, Chris Pratt hurt my soul a bit but I see what he's trying to do, and the animation is good even if it's a bit overanimated in spots. The writing seems bad but I'll reserve most of my judgement until the movie comes out. Overall more promising than I expected out of a video game adaptation from the Minion crew.
Exactly, it’s funny that he didn’t show the entire one minute clip of him talking about it and repeating it over and over, like everyone on twitter is specifically talking about that clip and he didn’t even show it on stream lol. He’s underplaying it way more here compared to what he actually said in the clip.
Adam can be kinda really petty sometimes, yes... I mean I tend to like that side of him in reviews, it's spicy, but once in a while it is annoying or sad to watch. (this instance didn't bother me at all lol I hate this movie and what it's seeming to turn into... seems like a waste of an opportunity to make a good Mario movie, but we'll see, I'm open to being surprised)
@@soapbiter36577 Adam gets mad that the movie isn't how he wants it to be -> People get mad that Adam's opinion isn't what they want it to be -> Adam gets mad that people's opinions of his opinion aren't what he wants them to be. I personally disagree with Adum about that shot. Since Bowser in the context of the movie loves power, the fact that he has it now has him move like he's excited aka bouncy. I wouldn't attack him about it though. That's just ridiculous.
I get what you're saying but I don't think that's what they are portraying. He isn't being giddy coming up to it... He's just overacting a bit.... Too many key frames I'd say... Play it in 0.5 and it looks great..
Feel the same, I don't use Twitter but I think the reaction he got was based off that review as a whole. The moment it started he said it looked bad and he didn't like Bowser's voice and then he went on about the 2 second clip which I think was the nail in the coffin. He was just at odds in a very minute way that made it seem like it wasn't a constructive bit of criticism especially cuz the line looks ADR'd anyway so most likely will look different in the actual film.
Look, I really like Adam and will continue to. I think my biggest issue was when he referred to positive comments on the official trailer as bots or like farms, which felt undiplomatic from someone who I think is an otherwise incredibly measured person. It was the act of delegitimizing others’ opinions from someone who has taught me a lot about different ways to appreciate and agree/disagree on film. What about positive reactions to the trailer on your own videos, Adam? Are those bots? Of course, his other issues such as Pratt’s voice, and going more in detail about his issue with the animation in this shot, I understand better, even if it was an ultra-nitpick hehe. Much respect, of course, and I’ll admit this is coming from someone who is quite excited for this film. It’s just that parts of his reaction clip left a sour taste in my mouth, and probably would have even if I weren’t as attached to this project.
This. That's straight conspiracy theory. Everyone knows it's just a goofy movie for the fans and the kids so of course most people don't make or upvote any negative comment. As far as it looks good, people are fine with it.
He didn’t refer to those comments as bots. Adum said that there are bots that search for positive comments to mass upvote them. Not only that, his point was that the general reception to the trailer couldn’t be inferred from the top comments, not that the trailer couldn’t possibly be well received. You kinda misrepresented Adum’s points here
100% agree. I love adam's content and everything he does, but yeah some things in the reaction seemed a bit more agressive than usual. The reason there were a lot of positive reactions is probably because the trailer looked way better than expected
@@jaypking4945 There's the implication that a conspiracy is preventing the negativity (which isn't proven to exist) to be downplayed. It's less of "people can't think it's good" and more "people have to think it's bad."
I agree with Adam's take on the shot being over animated. but in fairness, he spent like 2 minutes replaying the shot over and over saying "it's bad. It's awful. It's horrible". It's a little unfair to act like "oh I was just saying I didn't like it and now people are mad at me". I know it's not gonna matter in 2 weeks when Twitter forgets about this, but this lack of self awareness doesn't look good on him in the long run

Your comment on the previous video was about Bowser's voice. This is also what the overwhelming majority of the top comments on the original video were saying. This video response is about the "overanimating" comments that people on twitter are freaking out about. If anyone was freaking out about those comments on the original UA-cam video, I didn't see them. Also, the top comments on the original UA-cam video were much more constructive and respectful regardless of what the main issue is within each community commenting on it. @@Leo-pu2ru Yeah but if we're gonna throw all logic out the window then it still doesn't make sense because cartoon logic mean big equals slow. Do they want it to be realistic or not? They can't have both.
In this specific context, I understand Adum’s point a lot. This actually is how I feel about the CGI in the latest Jurassic World movies. When you compare how the dinosaurs move in the first films (first 3 that is) and the last films, there’s a noticeable difference in the the way the weight of the animals is portrayed. So I agree with Adum that animation can look clunky and “ADHD” like when the movement and weight of the character is not heavily considered.
i have been advocating for years that the biggest issues with current cgi, outside of the obvious fact that production companies rush them to hell, has a lot more to do with animation than with visual fidelity. even slightly questionable cgi can go a log way if its animated well. and its hard to tell the source of the issue, is hollywood going thorugh a drought in good animators in special effects or are these artists not being allowed to demonstrate the peak of their talent.
I totally understand the point and see how it happens in modern movies but still not see how that specifically applies to Bowser in that scene who is canonically pretty flexible for his size, he can jump around as much as Mario.
@@islandboy9381 it has nothing to do with whether hes capable of it or not, just that hes overanimated as in his expressivity (not sure if thats an english word, its not my first language bear with me) is exxagerated. Ultimate point is Subtlety in animation goes a long way.
I definitely feel like there's the difference between having an opinion, and saying the first thing that flies out of your ass. The fact that Adam thought the positive trailer reception was some kind of conspiracy, is HILARIOUS.
Because it was? It's a shitty brand movie that people were defending before the movie even came out. Like, I kid you not people started shitting on Twitter over the fact that critics that got early access didn't like the movie. And gee, look at that, the movie has a bland plot, shitty voice acting and a pace faster than Usain Bolt. It's bad lol.
So I guess YMS isn't a fan of how is done, he doesn't like it and that's fine, he can explain why he doesn't like it, but the way the delivered his message sounded very hateful to some, and some people are just sensitive when they hear someone big disliking something they love
@@DeathBlossom867 yeah I know it looked weird to him, I'm just pointing out that for some people it sounded like he hated it, I'm fine with his criticism, and I understand his perspective, also I am growing up thank you
I don’t agree with Adam but like…making this into a controversy is stupid lol he doesn’t like it. And it’s gonna be ok. The only issue I could see is that he kind of frames his criticisms as objective a lot of the time which bugs me cause media criticism isn’t objective. But that’s not even what the controversy is so I do not understand
I'm sorry but I hate the idea that everyone has to constantly frame everything with "this is my opinion". That should be baked into anything a film critic is saying. Just because you didn't feel like he emphasized that enough doesn't mean he was trying to pass anything off as objective
@@joshuazeeman7553 I don’t think that simply because he doesn’t stress that it is subjective. It’s the way he frames the criticisms. There is a huge difference between “wow I really don’t like this I think this shot is over animated” and “this shot is over animated I genuinely cannot understand how you would think otherwise”. If you are a review person you SHOULD stress that this is just your opinion. In the text of the criticism. That’s part of your job. Adam can be very hyperbolic in his critiques which is fine but sometimes it crosses the line into basically saying you cannot in good faith disagree with his take because it is so objectively true. And seeing the types of reviews out there like mauler that genuinely state their critiques are objective, you need to differentiate yourself from that.
I gotta agree with the other person in the comment section who said this; Adum is downplaying his reaction here. He went over and over the shot and borderline whined about it. The backlash is warranted. The toxicity not so much, but I'm sure not every person retweeting him was being heinous. I get his viewpoint but for a three second shot in a trailer for a _fucking Mario movie_ you're really gonna go off like that? Esp for one we aren't sure is taken out of context of the original scene?
Adam, this is coming from someone who is neither “a crazy Twitter person” nor someone who is invested in the Mario movie. Your take is just dumb. 1) The exaggerated, bouncy animation style is EVERYWHERE in the trailer. Bowser yelling “Open the Gates!” caused his entire head to lunge forward. His giggling made his whole head bounce. When he shoots his flame breathe he has to cock his head to the side before firing. Why is that shot the one that is “too bouncy”? Cuz he does it a lot? The character is excited and on top of the world in that shot. 2) Probably my biggest issue was when you tried to undermine the interpreted expression. You said in a very disparaging tone “What am I even supposed to interpret from this? Excitement and evil?” Like c’mon, man. It’s obvious the character is excited and that you correctly interpreted the intended emotion but you couldn’t even give that to the animators. That reads as nothing but bad faith. 3) The animation just isn’t that bouncy or crazy. His expression and emotion does not change remotely enough to take away form his intended emotions, nothing about his movement takes away from his “slow, tank” aesthetic (it’s not like he’s a giant mech or Godzilla or something), and again, there are several points in the trailer where the style of movement is the same and none of those scenes are worthy of criticism.
He could've easily just ignored the criticism. It was only a trailer reaction. Who gives a shit what people thought? I don't agree with his point on Bowser being over animated but why address the negative comments? He's been doing this for years now so you'd figure he'd learn to take it with a grain of salt and move on. I don't dislike Adam or his content but this was pointless.
The issue me and others had as far as I can tell is that he was being overly negative. Saying things like "it's horrible, it sucks, its garbage." Yeah bowser is very animated...and that's a bad thing why? Yes the movement and expression could be subtle, but at the same time this is mario, characters have always been VERY expressive. But that's just my take, chris pat still sucks and I think we can all agree on that :)
I don't think it's inherently a bad thing, but if you're familiar with Bowser in the games, he's not spastic or overmanimated in his movement. That's all that's being said. Though I will agree, Adum tends to fixate on things in an overcritical matter from time to time.
As much as I enjoy most YMS content, Adum absolutely deserved the backlash, but not so much the toxicity. The fact that he hyper-focused on that one scene that looked perfectly fine overall just made Adum come off as an insufferable manchild. While I can understand where he was coming from, since Bowser did seem pretty weightless and light for being a heavyweight character, it’s not really out-of-character for Bowser to be overly expressive as he’s demonstrated that in plenty of the mainline games; that’s completely different from over-animation. However, the way he put it in the original reaction vid was unnecessarily aggressive and just blatantly hateful. He constantly kept replaying the scene just to say, “it’s terrible/awful/horrible”, and then has the nerve to play the victim card and sugarcoat his initial reaction as, “I just thought it looked off, that’s all”, in this video. It didn’t help his situation when he came up with some weird astroturfing conspiracy about how all the people in the comments of the trailer were bots and comment farms just cuz he’s in the minority of people who hated it. “Oh no, people genuinely enjoyed something I hated and don’t share the same opinions as me, they must be BOTS!! 😱”. However, with all this into consideration, it’s never okay to harass people anywhere about opinions and such, that’s so fucking pathetic and doesn’t make you any better than Adum. All in all, this is probably one of the biggest L takes Adum has had in a while, and his cynical and jaded attitude has become completely unbearable now. But that doesn’t justify all the hate he received on Twitter. That is just downright pathetic and childish.
A little harsh, but yeah. Itd be ok if he stopped at the "bowser shouldnt be moving that fast" or "bowser should sound cooler" but accusing the people who saw no problems to be bots was really dissapointing, frankly. All i can hope for is that he doesnt milk it for the podcast and itll fade into the aether.
I flip flop between liking Adam and finding him genuinely insufferable. I enjoy his let’s play channel, the Adum and Pals videos as well as this highlights channel (sometimes). I continue to be frustrated with his increasingly pathetic campaign against The Lion King remake and I look forward to the day when he finally moves on from TLK.
Adam was literally the only person to complain about Bowser wether it be the voice or animation. People will say he was over animated, i disagree. Bowser can be as animated as needed because of how comedic he is. It's fine if he thinks that it was over animated but the fact he focused on it so much just killed whatever point he was trying to make.
@@spase667 in a movie like Lion King 2019 where there's questionable choices and a lack of production and creativity? Yes. In a trailer where his he focuses on a 5 sec long scene for a time longer than the whole trailer itself? No
I assume, because Nintendo apparently has Illumination's balls in a vice over this movie, that the mouth sync is off because it needs to focus on Japanese voice sync over the English dub.
Or it's just audio spliced together for a trailer? it happens a lot in trailers, audio from different takes to fit the vibe of the trailer instead of the actual film.
@@hi_-fc7fo Yup, that's probably the case. I mentioned it in my comment on the last video. The audio that was used to animate that scene probably isn't even the one they used in the trailer.
That is absolutely not the case. Not only was this movie written by Americans, it’s also targeting the US market. This movie will likely do well in Japan, but won’t come close to the success it’ll have in the West and the producers are well aware of this.
Mario's original voice was a guy with a Brooklyn accent which it appears they were going for, you slightly hear the accent towards the end, Mario's origin story is he's a plumber from brooklyn, the stereotypical high-pitched fake Italian accent came later but for video game sound effects, not to have dialogue with it, that voice would be intolerable and unnecessary for a movie. You can tell they're trying to truly stick to their roots, like actual source material to reach most Boomer fans, but they're probably going to change the story from him being from Brooklyn to him being from Metro city which is a city like New York in the Mario universe, thus the reasoning they are bringing back his original Brooklyn accent.
I agree with him that Bowser is over animated but that doesnt necessarily make it bad. This is the Illumination Mario Movie with Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and so much many others. This is such a stupid idea so the animation might as well be over the top and goofy as well.
@@Abomdosnow The movie isn't even out yet, why would you assume the dramatic lighting is only in the climax? It's clearly a dramatic scene and imo Bowser's movements don't match the tone of the moment. this whole situation is just annoying bc it was never meant to be a huge criticism but he cant articulate his point without it seeming like hes exaggerating it
the issue i have with the "over animated" argument is that, its obviously a chosen animation style, its not objectively bad its just different, but YMS makes it sound like over animation is a bad thing period, when its really not, and even then, this isn't really all that "overly animated" as YMS makes it seem me thinks. Limited animation is also just an animation style, take for example Kid Cosmic, Spiderverse or some characters in Wreck it Ralph which intentionally have either their movements or fps limited to better fit the atmosphere, same goes for "overly animating" its not inherently bad, its just a matter of taste, and if you dislike that its ok, its just that people want you to understand a bit of animation before objectively criticizing it
Claiming that a corporation might be paying people to make positive comments or dislike negative ones doesn't seem like a 'Didn't like a trailer' type thing, at all on something that clearly to a large extent has a positive reaction and not a negative one.
The amount of people I saw saying stuff like "channels like yms have ruined film criticism forever" was insane. They have this preconception of adam as this "annoying arthouse film-bro" that just clouds their judgment of everything.
I always find "x has ruined film criticism" to be the goofiest thing. Even when it's someone I dislike, like Cinema Sins. Like, "nitpicking" is going to happen. It's unavoidable. Even if someone like Cinema Sins never existed it wouldn't matter, people would still be making these observations.
@@YMSHighlights Twitter and Reddit want film criticism to have double standards. it's funny because he's usually pretty objective. like if he doesn't like a movie he'll still acknowledge it could be someone else's thing and recommend it
3:03 They actually DID use a different voice take in the movie compared to what was in the trailer, which explains why the movement feels out of place. Adam was spot on.
People will jump on anyone for going against the popular consensus, but I will admit it does feel frustrating when Adum seems unsatisfied with almost anything put in front of him. I don't think he's lying or being dishonest just for the sake of disagreement, but I understand someone finding his opinions on something like this annoying or off-putting. Especially when his opinions shared on stream have a tendency of being framed as "Its ok if you disagree with me but I'm the one who's right" whether he means to or not.
Yeah 99% of the drama that you mentioned that people were mad about I wasn't even aware of because I'm not on Twitter. I still give no shits about the drama or Twitter, I'm just here for YMS content.
i suppose your taste in animation is just really lame because having more bouncy, expressive animation is VERY appropriate for a movie about MARIO, and especially for a character voiced by a charismatic actor like jack black but hey that's just me i suppose
Well deserved backlash. I love YMS but this take felt so forced, like trying to squeeze every little bad thing out of a good trailer and amplifying it by 10.
Animation is a different medium that can range from subtle to exaggerated. Both ends of the spectrum are good and have their place in animation. Bowser is an out-there villain who is very giddy in the moment, so it makes sense for him to act in a more frenetic and excited fashion. I can't see how that makes him "over-animated", just take the L and stop blaming Twitter for everything.
Dude, it’s like he’s not even listening to Bowser speak. Bowser clearly sounds excited and pumped up, which is why he’s shaking with excitement. I just can’t see where he’s coming from
Yes, another person that sees it this way. He's excited because he's obtained what he believes is ultimate power so he's kinda giddy about it. I hardly see anyone taking that into consideration but this whole debacle on this use of "over animation" is kinda ridiculous. It really isn't a big deal in my opinion. To be honest, and I am a fan of YMS but I don't see anyone outside of YMS circles talking about this. Not to say that that makes Adam a bad guy here but I've not seen anyone else criticize this at all from any other circles. Probably cause it's just that insignificant.
Whether someone else enjoys the same thing I do ultimately means nothing to me, and everyone is entitled to their opinions, but it really did seem like Adum was legit grasping for something to nitpick with the “overly animated” thing.
No, I know what he means completely. It’s not a big deal obviously and he’s not making it out to be, it’s just one shot really, but people lambasted him like he doesn’t know anything about animation, which is funny lol
@@whatastandupguy3050 Word. It's still a terrible take. "This illumination movie based on a children's video game made for children is overanimated." ESPECIALLY when the shot isn't even THAT "overanimated," is a horrendous take. I respect YMS, but this was a completely bullshit take.
If you guys look at who's directing this, it's two people. The first, Aaron Horvath, has the experience of directing only a single film before this, "Teen Titans Go: To the Movie". The second director, Michael Jelenic, has no directing experience in films prior to this one, and the reason these two are working together, is because Jelenic was the writer of the Teen Titans Go movie. Why Nintendo wanted these two directors to direct their most iconic character's first animated theatrical debut is beyond me. Is the CEO of Nintendo just the biggest stan of the Teen Titans Go franchise that he just HAD to have these two working on this? That's the only way I can logically figure out how these two people were put among candidate directors to be asked, and then, after reviewal, chose the one's with almost no directorial experience.
While I do think the shot itself has some gestures that go by too quickly, it's not a bad shot. Like Adam said, this IS a trailer for a movie that's still in production, so it'll likely change in the final film.
Agreed. It is jarring, and I also know what you mean that some of the "weightiness" of the menace of Bowser is kind of gone with that expression. It is OVERLY expressive. Notice how when he says that line his eyes move from left to right as well, even though he is the only one there. It is jarring, compared to that bad- ass entrance not 5 seconds ago.
I find it hysterical how much the Internet and my friends have either been treating the Mario movie trailer like its either the return of Jesus… or its the worst thing since the first Sonic movie trailer. Meanwhile there’s me where I’m just saying that this movie will just… exist. Nothing more… nothing less
It's even more hysterical being that the movie isn't out yet. People STILL haven't realized that the trailer isn't enough to judge the entire movie. EVERY SINGLE PERSON on this planet was dead set on Sonic's movie being a failure, and they were TOTALLY wrong. It wasn't perfect, I heard it's bad, but a complete failure? NOPE. If they're making a 3rd, it's not a failure.
People are wild. I don’t always agree with YMS’s points but I appreciate his perspective and so when I don’t agree it’s easy to keep going on with my life lol
Bowser's expressions remind me of that TikTok trend where people try to act like cartoons when they talk. It's definitely possible to add too many movements to a string of expressions
@@KevintheKing1 Hotel Transylvania is a cartoon and yet the movements of the characters are still way too cartoonish in a way that makes it unpleasant to look at to me
@@KevintheKing1 Bowser doing his evil laugh like he always does is better body movement because he is clearly heavy and have weight. Bowser should of just hands around the star then enter evil laugh. Also, yeah, I know Jack Black is cartoon expressive, but yeah to animate.
Stating your opinion as fact would be saying "this is objectively bad and you're wrong for thinking otherwise." He just said it was awful and overanimated, it's his opinion. He didn't state it as fact, he stated his opinion.
"Over-Animated"? Twitter aside, I NEVER heard that type of Criticism before... I just simply find that weird. "Over-Animated" like that's a weird Criticism coming from a guy still learning how to Critique/Review. That's New to me, really new to me.
I'm mad at how people couldn't understand what Adam meant about Bowser's overly kinetic animation; it's snappy and jerky like half of Illumination does. It doesn't NEED such over the top movements and it makes it look kind of cheap and tacky. I feel like I'm going to dissociate from reality with the amount of love people are pouring on this trailer.
This demonstrates a really interesting contrast in Twitter versus UA-cam culture, and it's interesting that Adam said he found out most of his audience wasn't on twitter. I, for instance, am not, and the sort of reactionary brigadiering that seems to happen on Twitter doesn't seem to happen as much on UA-cam because there's more form and more incentive for long form media and communication in comments. When you aren't restricted in how much you can say, you don't have to be sensational to be heard It's also worth noting that Twitter was developed by some of the scummies scumbags in silicon valley, and UA-cam was created as a high school project by a couple of stoners in their garage
Let's be real, UA-cam culture is exactly as reactionary as Twitter, it's just a little more echo chambery. YMS's audience is either going to like his content or is hate watching. If it gets to Twitter there's no context. UA-cam does that too, but it's a little better at pretending that there is context. That said, Adam's critique wasn't anything crazy, ppl gotta relax. But Twitter and UA-cam aren't that different, you just fine with the areas you're seeing.
I think YT has a much worse climate, honestly. Though, it depends what part you're on. What I mostly gather from Twitter are funny posts and people going after tweets that are just dumb as fuck, then shutting them down like a debate. There's a lot of spaces on YT that are toxic and have deluded followers. Plus, the videos that YT will just let on its platform is disgraceful.
Ehh, I think it's a bit of a nitpick, but they could have definitely key posed that shot better. Instead of being like "Look left clutch hands -> look right move arms -> look center while shaking arms -> look up with hands down in a claw pose" I'd want it to be like "(Now Who's) head down hands up in fists -> (Gonna stop me!) Head up in evil smile, hands down in clawed iconic bowser pose" Like the same end point, but instead of bouncing back and forth so much it's more like he builds up then does the end pose by winding up in the sort-of opposite position, right? I think something like that would make it feel way more weighty and impactful overall.
I was just confused Like I saw the trailers for Pinocchio 2022 and the fox had very not subtle animations and he loved that Whatever who fucking cares at the end of the day
The fox is also a fox and not a giant turtle man. The turtle man should have much heftier movements. You know, like the ones he does in the rest of the trailer.
@@misirtere9836 yeah but bowser is both serious and a goofball if you'd play the mario RPGs so it makes sense that his movements are over exaggerated at times Besides it's the exaggerated swagger of a turtle man
I effin hate "rule of thirds" and stuff like that, it's good to know and even practice them, for basic knowledge, but going ahead and setting "rules" over art is just limiting art expression, why would you want everything to be shot the same way? I think its really dumb, people like that should just stop pretending to be professional art critics just to win an argument if they're gonna get spooked seeing a Mr. Robot shot because it's not "centered" or "in the rule of thirds".
I don't mind over animating to a character if it connects to their attitude and expression. Like with Bowser being excited to finally have the power star. If there's no connection, then the character is just doing that for the sake of attention which I'm personally not a fan of because it's treating the audience like babies trying to capture their eyes on who's moving the most.
This is exactly how I looked at this, too. And it fits with Jack Black's acting as well. I feel like Adam did overexaggerate how "bad" he thought it was a little. I don't see why this is such a point of contention here. The whole movie isn't even out and there'll likely be a lot more things to critique and criticize when it does come out but right now, the trailer is all we have. This over animation conversation is getting a little blown out of proportion with how much this sort of thing isn't really "bad" nor is it that big a deal to begin with.
It's funny, because I'm an animator and I agree with Adum. There is such a thing as overanimating. The Bowser sequence could have the keys plussed up a bit (and the lip sync looks off, too, but that could be because the mouth shapes are also off).
I disagree that it looks bad or weird. It just feels sorta manic which I could kinda get for Bowser at a moment of excited triumph over getting what he wants. It's exaggerated, sure, but it's not so overly exaggerated that it takes me out. Scoot describes it as frenetic but like...I don't get any indication that it's not supposed to be a bit frenetic? Maybe I've just seen way WORSE examples of overanimation so this doesn't bug me as much but this just feels like exaggerated character acting. One thing I picked up on is that a lot of Bowser's mannerisms and posing seems to take inspiration from his voice actor, Jack Black so I guess you could say that they're just trying to make an exaggerated version of a man who's already pretty exaggerated.
I'm wondering if they recorded lines, animated Bowser, then decided to re-record those lines. Instead of altering the animation to fit the new lines, they just increased the speed in that one part to try to sync it better.
They do this all the time. Remember that bit in Sing where the mouse says "Singing Competition!" but his mouth only does 4 syllables in that time? Where he clearly said "contest" and then they... ADRd it? Is that even a thing in animation?
I like really like Adum, and his content, but I still can’t see it. Honestly the more he seem to talk about it, the more it feels like a unnecessary nitpick. No problem with you expressing how you feel about the subject, but he spent (in my opinion) a large part of the reaction on it. When a minute would have been enough on the subject. I also find it odd how he said they may bot in the comments without even trying to comment and see himself to see if that’s the case.
How many videos are we gonna get where Adum complains about Twitter weirdos before he just stops using it? I would have a long time ago in his position.
You should probably stop responding to negative criticism of your opinions on certain movies. It looks like Bowser is saying something else, but they changed it to something generic for the trailer
My first thought was also like “uh, is his mouth even matching??”
It's not even close to the dialogue, definitely has to be re-dubbed animation
It seems to be the case many times in the trailer

Like it's insane that you try to invalidate a stance based on "you're critiquing someone that doesn't have it good on average probably, therefore you're a bad person and your take is invalid."
He's a critic. Making content off his critiques. Critics don't go "there's absolutely nothing wrong with what I'm watching". If what they're watching is good, they'll NITPICK.
@Kureiton It does look wank though
I'm in a similar boat. In the reaction video, I didn't really get what he meant by "overanimated", especially with Adam's example that he did where he flailed his arms like a drama student. With this one, I get that Bowser had a few too many different "poses" in the scene and it could have looked better, but I still don't see it as a huge deal. Not that Adam is the one making it a huge deal, but even the amount of attention he gave it in the original reaction seemed too much in my opinion.

It’s a homage to Synecdoche, New York
Adum saying that subtle movements are more artful than overanimating is wrong when neither is inherently better than the other, it's how the animation is done & how it services the work. Even if overanimating doesn't help the Mario Movie, saying its animation is "less/not artful" sounds more like a personal preference than actual critique.
Something being preference and a critique are not mutually exclusive. Almost all critiques are preference.
He literally said it is a personal preference

That's exactly my thoughts
Playing devil advocate, the ADR in trailers are made for cohesion more than anything, since the next scene is made to establish who Mario was, the scene before needed something to go smoothly into that; hence the change in dialogue. While I cannot vouch for every movie trailer, it does make sense on this one.
Because it’s a fucking movie for fans of Mario, and only people who care way too much throw a shitfit over bad ADR for a _trailer_

@@joshuazeeman7553 I don’t think that simply because he doesn’t stress that it is subjective. It’s the way he frames the criticisms. The more attention he brings to the situation and talks about the clip the more ridiculous I think his criticism tbh.
Though I will agree, Adum tends to fixate on things in an overcritical matter from time to time.
also the fact that he was suggesting that any criticism was removed from the mario trailer and implying the comments praising the trailer were bots.
Well said with all of this. Thank you for being mature and level-headed.
I ain't reading all of that. I'm happy for you though. Or sorry it happened.
Isn’t that just Adam’s review style? It’s not the first time he’s hyper fixated on details.

PART TIME
That is absolutely not the case.
But why light it like it's super epic and dramatic as if they were taking it really seriously? It's somewhat at odds with itself

this whole situation is just annoying bc it was never meant to be a huge criticism but he cant articulate his point without it seeming like hes exaggerating it
Tbh I didn't notice the Browser animation thing until he pointed it out. I can see why it bothered him even if it doesn't particularly bother me.
the issue i have with the "over animated" argument is that, its obviously a chosen animation style, its not objectively bad its just different, but YMS makes it sound like over animation is a bad thing period, when its really not, and even then, this isn't really all that "overly animated" as YMS makes it seem me thinks.
Limited animation is also just an animation style, take for example Kid Cosmic, Spiderverse or some characters in Wreck it Ralph which intentionally have either their movements or fps limited to better fit the atmosphere, same goes for "overly animating" its not inherently bad, its just a matter of taste, and if you dislike that its ok, its just that people want you to understand a bit of animation before objectively criticizing it
Blind fanboyism and blind cynicism are opposite ends of the spectrum, and Adum falls into the latter.
Claiming that a corporation might be paying people to make positive comments or dislike negative ones doesn't seem like a 'Didn't like a trailer' type thing, at all on something that clearly to a large extent has a positive reaction and not a negative one.
Adam didn't at all respond to the joke about browser's neurological disorder and that made me sad
The amount of people I saw saying stuff like "channels like yms have ruined film criticism forever" was insane. They have this preconception of adam as this "annoying arthouse film-bro" that just clouds their judgment of everything.
I'm embarrassed for them
I always find "x has ruined film criticism" to be the goofiest thing. Even when it's someone I dislike, like Cinema Sins. Like, "nitpicking" is going to happen. It's unavoidable. Even if someone like Cinema Sins never existed it wouldn't matter, people would still be making these observations.
Because people forget that you can agree on one thing and disagree on something else.

There's probably an animator in the studio that felt the same way but the boss was like "WE GOT A DEADLINE"
Especially when his opinions shared on stream have a tendency of being framed as "Its ok if you disagree with me but I'm the one who's right" whether he means to or not.

i think you are ignoring how excited he is finding a super star and what it means for him as a power hungry person
i suppose your taste in animation is just really lame because having more bouncy, expressive animation is VERY appropriate for a movie about MARIO, and especially for a character voiced by a charismatic actor like jack black
but hey that's just me i suppose
im not sure if i agree with yms on the animation but the way some people on twitter reacted to his opinion was kinda dumb

Adam is a clown. He'll always be a clown and because he has his loyal bootlicking fanbase, he'll never admit when he's overreacting or wrong.
I feel that in the 'over animated part' it's also a bad line reading. It should be "NOW who's gonna stop me?" instead of "now WHO'S gonna stop me?"
I disagree, it wasn't a good shot.
No, I know what he means completely. It’s not a big deal obviously and he’s not making it out to be, it’s just one shot really, but people lambasted him like he doesn’t know anything about animation, which is funny lol
@@whatastandupguy3050 Word. I’ve disagreed with him in the past and definitely will again in the future (no big deal), but the fact anyone had the audacity of accusing him of liking The Lion King 2019…like tell me you know NOTHING about Adum without telling me you know nothing about Adum…

It's still a terrible take.
"This illumination movie based on a children's video game made for children is overanimated." ESPECIALLY when the shot isn't even THAT "overanimated," is a horrendous take. I respect YMS, but this was a completely bullshit take.

What's the like/dislike ratio on the original video?
The phrase "responds to the trailer reaction's backlash" is making me consider just ending it already
This puts dissecting a trailer to a whole nother level
I mean when someone is in a position where they are excited they express their emotions all at once. I think that's why it works here
This matters more to Adam than the “legitimately mad” guy who started this
While I do think the shot itself has some gestures that go by too quickly, it's not a bad shot.
NOPE. If they're making a 3rd, it's not a failure.

adum overanalyzes things too much sometimes
Isn't it just silly how Adum often states his opinions as facts, when it clearly is something he means to say as his preference?
Stating your opinion as fact would be saying "this is objectively bad and you're wrong for thinking otherwise." He just said it was awful and overanimated, it's his opinion. He didn't state it as fact, he stated his opinion.
"Over-Animated"? Twitter aside, I NEVER heard that type of Criticism before... I just simply find that weird. "Over-Animated" like that's a weird Criticism coming from a guy still learning how to Critique/Review. That's New to me, really new to me.
That style of animation is very ‘Illumination’
I'm mad at how people couldn't understand what Adam meant about Bowser's overly kinetic animation; it's snappy and jerky like half of Illumination does. It doesn't NEED such over the top movements and it makes it look kind of cheap and tacky.
I feel like I'm going to dissociate from reality with the amount of love people are pouring on this trailer.
The trailer isn’t bad on its own, Chris Pratt’s voice and illuminations animation choice that are the most standout things to critique
When you aren't restricted in how much you can say, you don't have to be sensational to be heard
It's also worth noting that Twitter was developed by some of the scummies scumbags in silicon valley, and UA-cam was created as a high school project by a couple of stoners in their garage
An actor can ham it up. Animators can ham it up, too.
I was just confused
Like I saw the trailers for Pinocchio 2022 and the fox had very not subtle animations and he loved that

He doesn't deserve all this hate but that reaction was full of bad takes. The animation was fine and also the voice.
Check out the way the Star’s spin ramps for a moment. I think the part that Adum is peeved by is literally sped up for this trailer.
It looks like it's sped up for a brief moment, then goes back to normal. 4:24 Great observation! I'm betting this is the case.
I love Adum’s reviews but as a person he can be very abrasive which is a turn-off for some.
Literally 1984
Never been this happy over not using Twitter.
It's hilarious to me that Scoot is less controversial than Adum. The power of being a kitty cat I guess😺
