You don't need to mount that SSD on that camera, use a bit longer type-C cable and buy a small slingbag, then put that SSD in that bag. Another thing to consider is buying a peak design strap and change it to sling mode, so whenever you feel tired just sling your camera around your body without breaking the cable connection. The bag will hold your ssd while the strap will hold your camera. I get used to work with my A7C when connected to video transmitter with that method using mini HDMI cable, and i'm sure it will work well on S5II-X with SSD.
I think this is the right option if you’re using a gimbal. With a housing and cradle to mount the ssd the setup will be even heavier and also harder to balance for the gimbal.
Thanks Caleb! I think the setup for me would be S5 II X with the BM Video assist 5 inch mounted on a cage, with the DMW XLR-1 for audio, HDMI going into the video assist and the USB C port hooked into a power bank. Pretty sure 5:1 BRAW would be smaller and more versatile than Prores HQ, and it can be recorded to SD card in the assist :)
As a photographer who is just moving into video, I have been constantly impressed by the amount of options and solutions video makers have. And all relatively cheap and solid, smallrig comes to mind. And in all honesty, once you start doing video, it all becomes bulky regardless. The way i feel about video at the moment is, if I cant find a solution then i am not looking hard enough or thinking hard enough. The kondorblue is such an elegant solution. Costly? Maybe. But if you have clients then its a minimal expense. And you have the options of having a blade bay to mirror the information so you dont work directly on the drive. If that doesn't work then you have a ssd mounting cage which has a pretty small foot print. Options are endless. On photography sets i have seen people work with a lot less and made it work. Which has always impressed me.

I used to keep all the original footage after a project was finished and had to build a server to keep it all safe, now, I delete the originals and keep the proxis only... the new h265 encoding 420 10 bit from davinci proxy generator is very good and the files are crazy small... i would say they are still usable in case years later the clients calls again hoping to use some of the old footage. and whit AI upscallers nowadays I feel even more comfortable doing that and I have been able to save TONs of space on my server for new projects. just wait a moth later after the project is paid and released from the client side to delete the originals.
The two USB-slots in the Nikon Z8 show where it will end up in the future. I think this is the way to go. Even better would be a general standard for the pro blade format so the camera can get a slot for this for example in a small vertical extension grip under the camera.
they should make an SD to USBc adaptor so you can plug the SSD to the card slots. ... or allow recording directly to 2 cards at the same time and then compile it while you stop recording... @@bingbang9643 I think the power-consumption of SSDs is already a nightmare on USB and the cameras are operating at the edge of what is possible. I doubt that the SD-slot can do this. This might would work with SSDs with battery. I don't think the SSD-Slot is made for this kind of usage and expect mechanical problems. All this says is, CF express cards makers need to revise their pricing because NVME SSDs are both faster and cheaper per GB, hopefully CF express makers sales tanks and they realise they need to adjust.
You can just use any cheap spring activated phone holder for mounting on a self-stick and pop the SSD in that instead as its about the same size as a phone then use the hot shoe to mount that done.

Hope other brands will work. Since Samsung T5 is discontinued so it's hard to get. And Sandisk Extremes are known for being unreliable (that's why they are 40% off lately) ... so there is no choice actually.
The way I see it, the SSD recording is for people like me, who don't shoot for a living. $250 4terabyte SanDisk USB C vs $1799 for an Anglebird C Fast of the same size, is a no brainer. If you can write off that media cost, C Fast is the easy choice, for me I'll stick to cheaper drives.
All the "issues" aren't an issue for me at all. My samsung t7 fits very well onto the side of my top smallrig top handle. If I wanted to build out my rig to be powered by v mount power, I would use a dumby battery inside the camera. I'd likely then mount my ssd onto the back side of the v mount battery plate. Good video but none of these things are issues in my opinion.
The Intro was gold! Haha, I'm hopping to find a side handle that has a slot of the T7 or Sandisk SSD. It'll come out sooner or later. If anyone needs an Atomos Ninja V, Lmk. Upgrading to Blackmagic.
what windows laptop do you recommend when video editing the highest resolution 6k of this? or what minimum windows laptop specs should i consider editing this 6k?
I was about to buy 2 s5iiX camera but the Panasonic website scares me.. almost impossible to get good information from their website, they talk mostly about the S1 on the USA site and the Canadian site don't even load properly... you can't even see the available lense for L mount. 2 reasons why i would go with the S5iiX 1- Can record to SSD Drive (Does it come with the SSD Mount and if not, can you link the one you are using?) 2- Unlimited record time. Thank you so much in advance!
Hi dear! Interesting video!! Have you used or know this type SSD NVMe M2 to record video via usbc in fujifilm o DSLR cameras ? Can the camera to format 1TB SSD via usbc? Thank you so much for your help
I totally feel the bulky part! Since I use the dummy dtap, and put the SSD on the back of the plate so it feels out of the way and no in the way. But when that kondor blue handle comes out oh boy that will be sick!
This camera feels very niche. I'd like to be niche but right now I film a lot of different situations. So, I'm kind of in between waiting to see what the S1H mkii will be able to do when it's announced. I think that camera will record to cf express as well as externally. The benefit of the X's codecs for color grading does have value to me. However, I am wondering if that value would be almost null once the S1H 2 is announced... because I would most likely pay a similar price once i bought the X and a cage and a pro blade with handle... because that does seem like an optimum combination despite the fact that i have some ssds already.
pretty sure the s1hii will be around double the price of the s5iix and come out 6 months to a year later so theres some downsides. also why cant the s5iix just become your b cam when you upgrade to the s1hii?
Mine will be used mostly for shooting live gigs/concerts (not professionally). So would you think it's better to use the C port for the SSD card and just charge up the camera before using it? What's the average video shooting time with a full charge? Thx.
@@CalebHoover I found the blog post but not the answer I am seeking. Maybe you know if the Samsung T5 works with all codecs and resolution All-I, ProRes)? Say for example ProRes 5.8 422 HQ. I have quite a few of these drives and it would be lovely if they would cover the whole sprectrum 🙏
This is one of the things I have been looking for. I wonder if somebody had made the S52 hack to enable recording thru USBC NVMe SSD cards. just thinking its just firmware versions or is it truly a hardware difference?
Is there an option to record on both ssd and sd card? Im not sure I would feel in peace having only one option, i mean with the sd cards you could have both recording the same thing for safety.
Great video. Nice points about the SSD recording. But 1 thing that also worth mentioning. NVME SSD will heat up quickly with high speed data rate. I have M.2 NVME 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus which I use it as external SSD inside M.2 NVME Thunderbolt aluminium caddy with thermal pads. Everytime I use it to transferring data, it get really hot. Can you recommend any usb-c usb-c cable to lumix s5iix ? 25cm lenght, similar as you use I've tried one cheap kable and the cable from ronin rs4, and it stops recording after 20 second, with the cable that came together with sandisk 1tb, it works perfectly, but that one is too short to mount disk on the top. Which cables do u use?
im new to the camera industry, just wondering… is it not possible to just buy some sort of adapter that connects into usb-c and gives dual usb-c to use ssd while you charge like that?

All this says is, CF express cards makers need to revise their pricing because NVME SSDs are both faster and cheaper per GB, hopefully CF express makers sales tanks and they realise they need to adjust.
i mean...
You can just use any cheap spring activated phone holder for mounting on a self-stick and pop the SSD in that instead as its about the same size as a phone then use the hot shoe to mount that done.
Hello Caleb, don't worry about having a usb-c port, I have my ssd connected to the usb-c port and my power bank connected to a phantom battery in the place of the original battery, greetings.
Can you share which dummy power connector you use to connect to a power bank?

Hope other brands will work. Since Samsung T5 is discontinued so it's hard to get.
And Sandisk Extremes are known for being unreliable (that's why they are 40% off lately) ... so there is no choice actually.
i haven't had any trouble with the extreme but i've seen some peeps have
T7 Shield will most likely work.
The way I see it, the SSD recording is for people like me, who don't shoot for a living. $250 4terabyte SanDisk USB C vs $1799 for an Anglebird C Fast of the same size, is a no brainer. If you can write off that media cost, C Fast is the easy choice, for me I'll stick to cheaper drives.
just don't get a 4tb tho cuz lumix only supports up to 2tb lol but i hear ya on this
@@CalebHoover oh nice, you saved me some frustration and possibly some money as well haha. Thanks, take it easy.
Upgrading to Blackmagic.
lol if you find a good one let me know!
what windows laptop do you recommend when video editing the highest resolution 6k of this? or what minimum windows laptop specs should i consider editing this 6k?
Is there a hard drive size limit on the S5 IIX? As in, if I plugged in a 4 tb hard drive would it not work?
Wondering the same. I think the verified list didn’t mention t7 shield 4tb but rather the 2tb only. Weird.
I was about to buy 2 s5iiX camera but the Panasonic website scares me.. almost impossible to get good information from their website, they talk mostly about the S1 on the USA site and the Canadian site don't even load properly... you can't even see the available lense for L mount.
2 reasons why i would go with the S5iiX
1- Can record to SSD Drive (Does it come with the SSD Mount and if not, can you link the one you are using?)
2- Unlimited record time.
Thank you so much in advance!
Lol love the intro... Small rig tape? Link in intro please lol
it's just regular gaffe tape and not recommended for mounting the ssd lol
Is samsung t9 SSD for panasonic s5iix worse? Why do many people buy SanDisk Extreme Pro?
I put the iso on automatic. he doesn't go over 6 thousand. what am I doing wrong? I know that the camera's maximum iso is 51 thousand.
For me, my iso never goes above 1600 on auto
Wow that condor handle looks amazing
sure does!
you can get one of those data / power usb splitter.
But when that kondor blue handle comes out oh boy that will be sick!
i'm seriously pumped to give that handle a try
@@CalebHoover yeah that handle will be so nice for an SSD recorders
In what situation is it better to use the USBC to SSD? What features aren't available if you are only going to an SD card?
This camera feels very niche. I'd like to be niche but right now I film a lot of different situations. So, I'm kind of in between waiting to see what the S1H mkii will be able to do when it's announced. I think that camera will record to cf express as well as externally. The benefit of the X's codecs for color grading does have value to me. However, I am wondering if that value would be almost null once the S1H 2 is announced... because I would most likely pay a similar price once i bought the X and a cage and a pro blade with handle... because that does seem like an optimum combination despite the fact that i have some ssds already.
yea def need to go with what the best workflow would be - if there is a S1Hii (i'm hesitant on those rumors) it would be a powerhouse
Or just use a dummy battery in the s5iix to battery and use the usb c port for ssd
pretty sure the s1hii will be around double the price of the s5iix and come out 6 months to a year later so theres some downsides. also why cant the s5iix just become your b cam when you upgrade to the s1hii?
Kondor blue pro blade ssd handle + SanDisk 2TB pro blade sad mag are a good way of avoiding cumbersome big Ssds and tape.
Mine will be used mostly for shooting live gigs/concerts (not professionally). So would you think it's better to use the C port for the SSD card and just charge up the camera before using it? What's the average video shooting time with a full charge? Thx.
Wouldn’t it have been better to make the SSD record from HDMI port ?
Great vid. Do you have the link to the lumix website you are showing in the video. Does not seem to be the same you linked to in the description.
haha yeah totally i went with a blog from panny that shows more pics for the video but linked to the official page good catch
Im not sure I would feel in peace having only one option, i mean with the sd cards you could have both recording the same thing for safety.
the only thing is some of the shoot settings you don't have the option to record to sd cuz of the bit rate so the possibilties are limited
Please could you do a in-depth comparison of Sony A7S III and Panasonic S5IIX
You still can use a dummy battery and that should solve, right? have you tested or know about custom made SSD drives?
Great video. Nice points about the SSD recording.
But 1 thing that also worth mentioning. NVME SSD will heat up quickly with high speed data rate. I have M.2 NVME 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus which I use it as external SSD inside M.2 NVME Thunderbolt aluminium caddy with thermal pads. Everytime I use it to transferring data, it get really hot.
I can imagine that Condor Blue SSD Top handle will be hot for us to hold when operationg the camera. But maybe someone could confirm how hot that top handle in operations with SSD in it.
Usually they get hot because of the high speed transfers of 3000mb/s or more. But for 1900 should be fine.
Are you using that samsung 970 2tb in the s5iix? I actually just bought that one for mine with a smallrig inclosure. still waiting for my cam and drive to show up and hoping it works. thanks
@@godface81Me myself use Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB inside a NVME caddy for my Sigma FP. When I shoot 12bit CDNG RAW, the SSD heat up quickly, it's uncomfortable to hold the caddy. But when I shoot All-I it only get warm. The SSD performs reliably, never have problems except it's getting hot during shoots.
Do you think using HDMI to USB-C will let you record RAW on an SSD without a recorder?
Did you ever consider a DockCase Pocket M.2 enclosure with a NVMe 2230 SSD?
Love your videos, and sound choice, and had a question about this, thinking of buying it soon. How good is the weather sealing? I love your low light video and you said you had it out in the snow with no trouble? I’m somewhat new to serious videography and ruled out the ZVE1 as much as I want it’s sensor due to its lack of weather sealing! Hope you can help shed some light on this subject and keep up the great work!
Thanks mate very useful 👍 Do you know if it's possible to record to external ssd with S1 ? Samsung t5 or something like that ...
i don’t think so on the S1
Can we use c hub so we can use Both SSD and power x
Hello, I'm a newbie. I want to film interviews and some outdoor scenes as bridging scenes for my student project. I aim to make a documentary film with 4k quality. I wonder if I can use an Atomos Ninja screen to support Panasonic Lumix DC-S5IIx filming for 2 hours non-stop. Also, can you please suggest a lens for indoor interviews and outdoor ones? Thanks a lot in advance!
I have the G9ii and am a bit confused re SSD recording. Should/can I record to SSD using the USB C or the hdmi port. Thanks.
Can i record with regular (not Pro) Sandisk Extreme V2 SSD 2TB continuously in Pro Ress 5.9K 30 fps?
Caleb, what is happening with the S1H Mark 2, is it coming?
at this point i think only rumors but i hope i'm wrong
@@CalebHoover Thanks for your response.
Having to mount an SSD isn't really a con when you're shooting ProRes. If you're shooting at that level of quality you should have a rig anyways...
Can you store photos to the ssd instead of the sd cards?
I’m very intresting for getting this my first hybrid camera. I was choosing from sony a74 and this lumix s5iix. So my main question is and can’t find no where else is that in ssd can i record and use it in lower resoliution modes? Like just 4k 4:2:2 10bit or even in 1080 slow motion? Or it is only on these high modes like proress and so on?
Can you still record the lower res recording options to the SSD
Thx for video , I use g9m2 ,and have sandisk e61 2 Tb ssd, but have error message while I take a video , may I know is sandisk problem?
I use this ssd on normal drive with my MacBook Pro is everything normal , thx for help
Hi Qaleb I wanted to know what type of hard drive you are using with your GH6 and have you had any recording or playback bugs?
Hi Caleb, great video, thanks for sharing 🙏 - is it easy to combine footage from SIIX and the GH6? Looking for an SIIX to combine with my GH6 :-) THANKS!!!
Has your S5ii ever froze?
Hello can you record the S5iix with the M2 ssd?
What disk mount do you use?
its no brainer if you record in studio or long form on tripod
heyy are tha Crucial X9 Pro 1 TB Compatible with this Lumix S5 Mark II X???
Hello! maybe can help me!
When you shake the camera sideways can you hear a sound inside? I bought a Lumix S5iiX Thank you always
Hi! I have a question, is possible record 4.2.2. 4k 60p with SSD and have a backup on SD card? Thanks!
Yeah, I have the same question! Thanks for bringing it up!
Can 12-bit RAW footage be saved to ssd?
no only ninja v
Do we really need all of these large file codecs? I’m not an advance shooter…. I’m still 8 bit 😂
no we def do not!
Ever since the X came out, my GH6 seems even more amazing. Another benefit, no need for SSD for Pro Res and 5.7 K
If you really think that paying for CFexpress and SD is a benefit lol. Why on earth would anyone want to record pro res to a standard SD? SSDs are so much cheaper.
@@goo-o8g I don't record High Res Pro Res to Sd. I record to Cf Express. Yes indeed it is more expensive but I don't want another contraption on top of my Cage. At times, I also use the USB-C cable for the Extra Battery power if needed for very long takes. Unfortunately, you can't use both at same time. Thats the benefit. Blessings
Do you still use your gh6?
oh yeah! love the GH6!
I really do have a serious love/hate relationship with SSDs. good points my dude!
i have love/hate relationships with a lot of things ngl

Which lenses are best for the lumix s5IIX ?
I think the sigma art 24-70, but it always depends on what you are looking for.
@@puntoeffe_ Hi, I heard lots of people say the same thing. I just wonder if I can use the lens you mentioned to film an interview indoors, a short distance.
@@thuytrinhnguyen8497 I think so, lighting the scene well
yes i love too, but the limit is the USB-C type.
J'ai choisi ce SSD = Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD (MZ-V8P2T0BW), 2 TB, PCIe 4.0 and the mini box = Acasis 40Gbps M.2 Nvme SSD Enclosure Compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4, USB 4.0/3.2/3.1/3.0/2.0, TBU401.
imagine a type 4 usb-c port lol, I think that for the moment the manufacturers are at 3.1 or even 3.2 but never used to the maximum.
And Nikon now are 2 USB-C (one for Power and one for data) ^^
does it work with samsung 980 pro M2 ? i had some fails during my first shooting at 4K prores 50fps with samsung T7 1To (Lumix SSD list pourtant )
I use industrial velcro on the side of my Feelworld monitor so my ssd stays there!
The cable strap to attach the SSD 😂
Need CFexpress B support
i have had my S5iiX for 4 months now. of the issues you mentioned i have over come them. be curious what your thoughts would be.
the bulky. i got the cage and amount to set the drive on the camera. the Small rig cage that you appear to have.
the USB c in Use. i am using a dummy battery with a battery bank. YES, i found other issues. not all work. they do need to be designed for higher power output in the 9v range and more than 5w as well. but it does work. it in itself add to a bulk factor.
what i am now running into is USB-c SSD recording and outputting HDMI to an external monitor.
Sitting and watching you flop around with the loose drive and just wanna scream "dude go get a phone clamp off Amazon or something". You're making it way more awkward than it needs to be lol. And the future is recording to SSDs, it goes without saying that tons of companies are gonna start filling the market with solutions
