    Biggest Misconception With How OTF Knives Work. : 4:27
    Comparing 3 Different OTF Mechanisms: 5:24
    How Does the Axial Shift Hold Up? 6:24
    A little while ago I was doing some OTF research just checking out the market and seeing what was out there. I have always been a budget OTF guy because I had no real faith in an OTF standing up to the abuse I put a lot of my knives through. I didn't want to take apart and clean my knife once a week so I decided OTF knives were not for me. Having done a bunch of pocket checks recently I have been seeing guys carrying OTF's and saying that they were beating them up daily. Thus began my search for an OTF knife to carry and abuse!
    Obviously Microtech has been THE OTF company of the knife world for years and they make a pretty good knife. Guardian Tactical on the other hand makes the smoothest and most satisfying OTF out there! I have had the pleasure of carrying both of these brands for some testing over the years (the Guardian 035 Recon being hands down my favorite), and was interested in what else might be out there. Enter the Axial Shift!
    Made in my home state of Utah, relatively new to the knife world, and I was able to stop by their shop to pick one up! My initial impression was that these guys hustle and that they were hungry to make a rad knife. I carried the Shift OTF for about a month beating it up the whole time. We are going to talk about function, how an OTF knife works, and why I may have been wrong about the OTF knife world!

      I too have concerns in regards to using an OTF for EDC. I wish you would have spoken about what keeps the blade from getting pushed back into the handle, it doesn't appear to have any sort of lock.

    I bought a 1969 Ford pickup from the original owner in 1999. I paid $275 and drove it for 12 years before I sold it with only regular maintenance. I cannot pay over $200 for a dang pocket knife. $40 bucks is about my limit and no I don't lose them. I still have the first knife I ever bought in 1973, a Buck 110.

    I work construction and I have been carrying my wharncliff s35vn black dlc shift for nearly this entire year. Its normally my secondary, but on the weekends I carry it as my primary blade. I love the thing. I’ve more than abused it. To me it’s at the high end price of what a edc knife should be, buts it’s a low price for a great performer of a otf that’s American.

    My uncle gave me a microtech maybe 2-3 years ago and I was scared to use it at first since it's such an expensive knife, I didn't wanna mess it up. But as of late I've been carrying it more and more lately and using it more and more every day! It also has serrations which I don't typically like, but man I cut a lot of plastic bands off of pallets of tile and those serrations really help in slicing through them. I'm definitely gonna pick up a swift to go along with it!

    What's the price range of this thing? I have a lightning otf that I also put through the ringer with drywall, zipties, satellite wires, etc at work and it works great. The paint wears off real fast so it looks old, but aside from that it's only misfired one time surprisingly. I do carry it clipped to the outside of my pocket though to avoid lint jams, that was a huge issue with my schrade single action.

    I used to have a utx 70 but it was too small and cost too much to really use. I did really like the utility of it though. I've not had the money in past years to get another otf of a more usable size, that and they were illegal for me technically which made it kind of tricky to get one. But in January I think that's going away here in PA. I believe kniferights finally got the auto ban repealed here so I've been getting more interested in them. The Axials I was looking at have great looks, and are of a reasonable price. I could see myself getting one for a work knife where the fast one handed open and closing would be beneficial.

    So, the best thing to do from time to time is to use compressed air and aim it down the front to blow out the crap. Also, what helps me the most, is Rem oil. It doesn't gunk up like normal lube w dust. Also helps keep the inside nice and oiled. Helps w those half way lock ups that you have. I use a Benchmade Phaeton for work and I used it for harder use than normal and it held up nicely. So, I use my otf for utility. One thing I don't like about a lot of OTFs is the grip on them. They have no knurling or anything to help it stay in your hand. YMMV or course. Which is why I chose a Benchmade Phaeton. Awesome video!

What I really like about you, Zac, is that you admit your biases and are willing to either have them confirmed or debunked. Good or bad. But you don’t tell people they are stupid or dumb or ignorant if they like something you don’t or vice versa. That’s very much appreciated.

    • @zacinthewild
      @zacinthewild  Рік тому +4

      Thanks for the kind words! When the knife “comes off track” it’s essentially not overcoming the front or rear detent so it floats in between. This usually happens on opening the knife. All you have to do to reset it is carefully by pulling the blade fully open or flick the knife blade forward pretty hard and the knife will reset that way. Hope that helps!

    • @josephporfido2433
      @josephporfido2433 Рік тому +1

      Any time the blade disconnects from the detents is a misfire. They'll happen because the knife got too dirty and there's too much friction inside the knife or because you fired into an object. Just pinch the blade and pull it out and it should set out just fine

    I have a CobraTec OTF. I have had as EDC for 6 years now. It has been in mud, water ,sewage, fire and still gives me no problems.

    I also have the prejudice against otfs. I hadn’t even handled one because of that prejudice until blade show a couple of weeks ago. That snappy firing action is way more addictive than I anticipated. I fired one from every brand that had one on the table. They all felt great. Now I just have to work up the courage to buy one.

    I love my OTFs, but my favorite one is the Benchmade shootout, I love the thin blade geo's and the cruwear, I have an ultratech but I haven't carried it much cause the blade geometry isn't the best for my uses, and back when I first got it, it misfired so much I stopped carrying it for awhile. been wanting to try an axial or a gt, they seem pretty solid
