      I too have concerns in regards to using an OTF for EDC. I wish you would have spoken about what keeps the blade from getting pushed back into the handle, it doesn't appear to have any sort of lock.

    I’m a Paramedic. I’ve carried a microtech utx85 for 6 years. I use it on the ambulance, on contraction projects, even broke the tip off installing a door handle. I wouldn’t go back to a regular knife for anything. I love the convenience of one handed open close.

    I work construction and I have been carrying my wharncliff s35vn black dlc shift for nearly this entire year. Its normally my secondary, but on the weekends I carry it as my primary blade. I love the thing. I’ve more than abused it. To me it’s at the high end price of what a edc knife should be, buts it’s a low price for a great performer of a otf that’s American.

    So, the best thing to do from time to time is to use compressed air and aim it down the front to blow out the crap. Also, what helps me the most, is Rem oil. It doesn't gunk up like normal lube w dust. Also helps keep the inside nice and oiled. Helps w those half way lock ups that you have. I use a Benchmade Phaeton for work and I used it for harder use than normal and it held up nicely. So, I use my otf for utility. One thing I don't like about a lot of OTFs is the grip on them. They have no knurling or anything to help it stay in your hand. YMMV or course. Which is why I chose a Benchmade Phaeton. Awesome video!

    I bought a 1969 Ford pickup from the original owner in 1999. I paid $275 and drove it for 12 years before I sold it with only regular maintenance. I cannot pay over $200 for a dang pocket knife. $40 bucks is about my limit and no I don't lose them. I still have the first knife I ever bought in 1973, a Buck 110.

    Sweet looking otf 👍
    I have the utx 85 and troodon that I got for a great price years ago.
    I don't understand why the price is still so high with otf's.
    Edc is an el-whappo lol don't even remember the branding, also do quite a bit of sheet rock work and caulk cutting.
    Axial looks like a nice knife it should do well.
    I've been digging around for another gravity knife
    The one I use now I just use air to blow it out and done , no matter what I've been cutting with it.
    Best of luck to axial 👍

    My uncle gave me a microtech maybe 2-3 years ago and I was scared to use it at first since it's such an expensive knife, I didn't wanna mess it up. But as of late I've been carrying it more and more lately and using it more and more every day! It also has serrations which I don't typically like, but man I cut a lot of plastic bands off of pallets of tile and those serrations really help in slicing through them. I'm definitely gonna pick up a swift to go along with it!

  • @astaschak
    @astaschak 2 роки тому +1

    I used to have a utx 70 but it was too small and cost too much to really use. I did really like the utility of it though. I've not had the money in past years to get another otf of a more usable size, that and they were illegal for me technically which made it kind of tricky to get one. But in January I think that's going away here in PA. I believe kniferights finally got the auto ban repealed here so I've been getting more interested in them. The Axials I was looking at have great looks, and are of a reasonable price. I could see myself getting one for a work knife where the fast one handed open and closing would be beneficial.

    How do you correct the misfire? And what happens when it does that? Is it slipping off track? What I really like about you, Zac, is that you admit your biases and are willing to either have them confirmed or debunked. Good or bad. But you don’t tell people they are stupid or dumb or ignorant if they like something you don’t or vice versa. That’s very much appreciated.

    • @zacinthewild
      @zacinthewild  2 роки тому +6

      Thanks for the kind words! When the knife “comes off track” it’s essentially not overcoming the front or rear detent so it floats in between. This usually happens on opening the knife. All you have to do to reset it is carefully by pulling the blade fully open or flick the knife blade forward pretty hard and the knife will reset that way. Hope that helps!

    • @josephporfido2433
      @josephporfido2433 2 роки тому +2

      Any time the blade disconnects from the detents is a misfire. They'll happen because the knife got too dirty and there's too much friction inside the knife or because you fired into an object. Just pinch the blade and pull it out and it should set out just fine

In fact I didn't even know they were capable of holding up to hard stabbing until I saw someone run one through one of those skull analogs you see around with the ballistic gel. I do wonder how this cheaper Amazon OTF I saw would hold up though... 🤔

    What's the price range of this thing? I have a lightning otf that I also put through the ringer with drywall, zipties, satellite wires, etc at work and it works great. The paint wears off real fast so it looks old, but aside from that it's only misfired one time surprisingly. I do carry it clipped to the outside of my pocket though to avoid lint jams, that was a huge issue with my schrade single action.

That said, with this being a new to the market manufacturer, even a high end one you would think their price would reflect that. I visited their website and their prices are very similar to microtech and if less only by a very small amount. In this price point I'll stick with what I know. Sucks cause I was excited to try them out.

    My main concern with OTFs has been that every single one I pick up has in my opinion, excess blade wobble. I am a stickler for the blade, when fully opened being stiff with little to no side to side wobble.
    To be fair, I haven't played around with one much over the $100 range.....

    • @luceatlux7087
      @luceatlux7087 Рік тому

      yeah... i think all of them have some degree of that small bit of wobble. i think it has something to do with how it MUST be in order for the otf functioning.
      I use a regular cheapy one all the time and have to remember that, whenever i cut from one end, it's going to give just a bit before it cuts, which can be irritating when cutting a wire or something and expecting stiffness.
      it can cause various irritating slips cuz you will forget that it gives just a bit before you have that stiff cutting edge.

They make great knives but there are plenty of other manufactures in the otf market that make quality! i'd take my houge exploit or heretic manticore over my microtechs any day. i will definitely be getting a shift, i have the axial Enzi and i love it, great build quality (the enzi is made in china).

    How dare you! You go back and you pick those knives up right now mister!
    Great video and thanks for info on a hidden gem, in my state OTF knives are outlawed so once again I'll be crying myself to sleep

    I love taking my knives apart to see how they work. I find it really interesting to see the opening, closing, and locking mechanisms.
    I have never used an OTF before and unfortunately am not able to living in canada as they are illegal. I do have a manual OTF - the Kershaw Kapsule which is as close as I'll get, but is still pretty cool.
    Super rad to see how tough OTFs are and your take on them.

    personaly i like the single action OTF's much better. yeah you gotta pull on the lil recharge handle to reload the blade for action but..hey if ya need a knife..especially for self defense..you are mainly only concerned about it getting opened. afterwards ya got time for closing it.
    but as an EDC yeah I can see the downsides.

    I decided to give OTF a try about two weeks ago, few days after watching the video with you and Ben on "can people open knives?". Researched what I can afford where I live and went with a ~50 bucks replica of an Ultratech (with tanto blade). Watching this video was like looking back at my own thought process.
    by the way, if you haven't already, please watch "Counterfeit Microtech torture test!" by X-Ring on youtube. After that video I no longer have any notions of otf being "delicate" for sure

      Oh man, you're in for a ride. I haven't carried a one-handed knife on a pocket clip in like 6 years, but now I do it again thanks to an otf. What I like the most is how it truly feels like a natural extension of your arm, i.e. the way your hand holds the knife while opening, using, and closing it is virtually identical.
      Which one did you get and what was the greatest argument in that decision? Also, don't be shy to reply to me with your impressions when it arrives :)

      @@jaysan1372 btw, one quick tip, just in case - check up on your screws and how they feel after about a week or two of using the knife. on my otf I had the frontmost top screw right below the slider loosen due to vibration, so I put some thread locker on all of them)

      @@snowhusk Thanks for the info man. I bought a microtech makora 2. I also bought a miker knife 12 with a tanto blade. Hopefully they work well. I honestly always wanted a otf and when I saw thatvideo I just pulled the trigger and got 2. Was also looking into balisong and got a kraken clone 😅. I check every day to see when it will arrive 😭

    I also have the prejudice against otfs. I hadn’t even handled one because of that prejudice until blade show a couple of weeks ago. That snappy firing action is way more addictive than I anticipated. I fired one from every brand that had one on the table. They all felt great. Now I just have to work up the courage to buy one.
