Turtle Tankmates - Algae Eater Success!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- my turtle got fishy tankmates! Namely, an algae eater to try to deal with the brown diatom algae problem in my turtle tank. I wanted to see how effective it would be in removing the algae from the tank, and (not to spoil it or anything) but I think it went pretty well! I found out how to get rid of algae in my aquarium and keep it looking clean.

count how many times I said "algae" or "algae eater" in this video 😂 do you think an algae eater would be a helpful tankmate?
Way to many times
400!
@Carri LaFollette woah I only have a ten-gallon for now
@Carri LaFollette what kind of algae eater? Some species get really big in other species get really small. Do you have a common plecostomus?
500
Wow wow WOW that algae eater kinda rocks...
You: "I have an algae problem" *3 sq inches of algae*
Me: "my pond is perfectly clear" *is literally an algae bowl*
AHAHAHAHA and that's the difference between someone who keeps turtles in aquariums vs ponds 😂
@@TheTurtleGirl Absolutely! 🤣🤣🤣
YAY, you are hitting 70 k soon, hope you will get 100K subs soon!!
hope so!
Hey @TheTurtleGirl I noticed your tank doesnt have an area for your turtle to just lay outside of the water. Is it alright if I do that as well with the tank of my red eared? Or should I leave it some space for it to be able to be outside of the water
I just got my turtle yesterday and u have already helped me so much!
congrats!
@@TheTurtleGirl Thank you!
That looks like a Chinese algae eater, I have 5 of them, bar none I think they are the best algae cleaners, just my opinion. Great video! That turtle is beautiful👍🏻🙂
AWESOME VIDEO!!!!! also, that is a Chinese Algae Eater which is known to be very aggressive, (and can grow up to a foot in length) a Siamese Algae Eater would be a much better option.
Thanks for pointing that out!
This has been my goal to help with the tank. People said snails, but i heard they will eat them depending on their size. What are your thoughts? I have three turtles 🐢
I lost my turtle hatchling on 19 November and thought I was never gonna find her
But luckily found her she was in the wall there was lil hole in there so she jumped out of the tank went to the hole and went inside it I am so thankful I found her
oh my gosh! that's wild....glad you were able to get her back!
i was watching this and my southern painted turtles started watching. i think he wants a buddie in his tank. do you reccomend any specific fish to be in the same tank as a turtle?
Video on that soon!
Would a fish like this be ok for musk turtles?
Also one of my turtles has a bad foot that as soon as it starts to heal the other one nips it.
It’s just a sore stub, we got home like that as apparently a bigger turtle bit off his back foot and part for a front foot. (Front foot is ok) anything I can do to help it heal up?
I have two small siamese algae eaters that do an awesome job! They are non stop! Turtle doesn't bother them.
sweet!
I'd love to hear more about other species that make good tank mates. Thinking of setting up a nice tank with a turtle and fish
coming soon Anthony!
I’ve been keeping my two painted turtles with African Mbuna cichlids without any issues. They are pretty aggressive fish and both the fish and the turtles seem to have a peace treaty as no one wants that fight haha I think a lot will depend on the individual turtle. Mine have, for years, shown zero interest in hunting fish down. Also a big tank certainly helps as mine are in a 125 gallon. Whatever you do keep in mind there will never be any guarantees it won’t turn into a massacre
Hi turtle girl so I’m wondering would real moss be safe to put at the bottom of my take or no??
if it's collected from outside and not aquarium moss (like java moss or christmas moss) I'd hesitate to say yes, because you don't know what could be living it. Something like sphagnum moss might be ok. I guess you'd just have to do more research into how you can do it safely :)
Do you guys know of anywhere to find a good-sized piece of driftwood as a center-piece decoration? Here in Utah, I can't easily find anything good while I'm out and about. I really like The Turtle Girl's idea of making a video about that.
Look for things like manzanita and cholla in deserts.
Hi, your turtle is so cute!!!!! What's the size of your tank? What is the name of the fish and did you really catch it?
I just heard about Nemo 😞 I’m so sorry for your loss.
And Thank you for sharing such a useful video on removing algae 🙏🏼
thanks John!
I had one for 3 weeks and he’s so small but luckily he’s camouflage in my tank lol
they're def good at hiding!
I've also been think about algae eaters they could be a real help for me
they're great, Jose!
Thank you so much!!! I’m getting a turtle 🐢 now and I am trying to be prepared.
Keep doing what you're doing you are a big in inspiration to me. Thanks.
and you are an inspiration to me.
um just a question do you know what type of algae eater the fish is i have a bad algae problem and i clean my tank very often because of it so if you know please let me know thank you for all the help in the videos
Loved the video great info 😆🤔was wondering if you could make a video or address if aquatic turtles need their nails trimmed? I noticed my musk turtle nails are getting long and Google it out of curiosity😅was shocked to see some people do it but some don't🤷♀️not sure what to do in the future...
That's a great idea!
Did the aldea eater go for the turtle??
Hi! I have been watching your channel since i got three turtles.. Anyway i have a question.. Do you have advice for keeping floating plants (duckweed and similar) in turtle tank?? Pls respond or make some video on that topic
Hello was wondering what kinda species of turtle do you got there?
Did you buy all your decorations or find outside
I haven't watched the video yet, but I know it's going to be AWESOME!
haha thank you so much!
How did you even catch it...I can never catch mine
Another awesome video!!!
thanks so much! glad you enjoyed :)
Have you considered using a UV light filter? Mine cleans the green algae super good and quick
I've thought about it but have never tried it!
@@TheTurtleGirl it's the best thing I'd recommend for green algea. Doesn't kill brown algea though but first that I use plecos :)
Do you know where i could find one of these? I just recently got a diamond back and hes a huge fan of shrimp but his tank turns extremely quick. I need help D:
Hi, do you know what kind of tortoise i should look into or get, i want the tortoise to stay small about around 3-4 inches long.
unfortunately , most tortoises grow very big .
Yeah, most turtles get a bit bigger than that. I've never owned a tort so I wouldn't really know 🤷🏽♀️
Hey turtlegirl question? did you add bacteria to help cycle the tank I know Algae gross when they is a bit too much one one thing in the water do you water change every two weeks?
no, my tank is established, so I don't need to add bacteria. I do a 30-50% water change bi-weekly, yes.
@@TheTurtleGirl copy.. copy ..was just wondering
Hello! What type of turtle is the blue one? I love it
he's a diamondback terrapin
@@TheTurtleGirl I went out looking for one at big box stores and mom and pop stores , the look they gave me when I asked for that type of turtle. Ended up purchasing a bigger tank for my red eared ? Turtle .
Can you make a vid about a turtle set up for muskturtles???
Would it be okay to have algea eater with my turtle as tank mates?
No shot
I have one algae eater in my 40 gallon tub with my turtle and he does a really good job I'm cleaning up stuff and cleaning the turtle
it's interesting because there are different types. Some are good at eating uneaten food at the bottom of the tank, while others are actual algae eaters.
Well, know what I need to keep my tank clean.
_the more you know™️_
I got a new small Janitor pleco and within half an hour my idiot turtle ripped it into half. what do u suggest?
my turtle is small.. 4-5 inch carapace. and the Janitor pleco fish was 3 in head to tail.
Have you considered using shrimp for tank cleaning help?
How do you clean the fish poop ? I have 5 convicts and a pletco with my map turtle in a 55 and they poop a lot I honestly don’t want my turtle to eat any of it idk if I should take them out or not 😕
Omg I came home to tons of algea in my turtle tank! What a coincidence!🐢
Hmm do I know you from
Somewhere
well there ya go! 😂
@@itz_toxic360 lol I think I do from Carsons Aquatics lol!
@@sebastiannuno5575 ohhhh yeahhhh
@@sebastiannuno5575 what another coincidence
That is not a Siamese algae eater. It is a “Chinese” algae eater. “Chinese” is in quotes because they don’t come from China and nobody knows why they’re called Chinese. I know because it is yellow. I have two in my turtle tank as well. They do a good job when they are young, but when they mature they stop eating algae and instead prefer protein.
interesting!! I've had this guy for almost a year and a half and he hasn't slowed down! Well, at least for the time being he's doing his job :P I couldn't remember if he was Chinese or siamese, so thanks for your thoughts on the ID :)
mines been with me for a year and loves bell pepoers
I love your channel.
thanks!
Hi can you not put shrimps alongside the turtles, what if it was a baby turtle and shrimps together
I have a question, how do you sanitize drift wood or other stuff you collected outside before you put it in your tank? Do you have to boil it, and if so how?
Boil it in a big pot! also helps get rid of tannins.
@@TheTurtleGirl thank you! But what if it's too big to fit in the pot?
@@TheTurtleGirl I am planning on upgrading my yellow bellied slider tank from a 40 gal to a 60-70 gallon, somewhere the next months or so. Am gonna ask permission to upgrade her tank for my birthday. In her current setup there is not enough space for driftwood but when she has a bigger tank I am definetly going to add drifwood! We rescued her from the streets.
I was so excited to get my algae eater. But after a couple of months I ended up rehoming it. Algae eaters have a lot of waste more so than the turtles. It just pooped too much. Plus they get bigger than I thought they would
love your jacket or whatever its called!
Thanks :D
Can algae eaters eat algae off of turtle shells or is it not advised to let them do that.
they can, but in my opinion, if they're bugging the turtle or they're being too rough and scraping too much at the keratin, it's not a good idea.
@@TheTurtleGirl oh ok
do you ever put your diamond back on salt water? i so want to buy one but idk because they like salt water as well.
They actually like _brackish_ water, but mine was raised in fresh, so that's how I keep him :)
Always love your video! Love from India 🇮🇳❤️
thanks!
Can you make a care video for missisipi map turtles
I don't own one, so I don't see it happening anytime soon, but maybe!
I have the same problem but I have a RES turtle that eats everything, even plants, snails, fish, I dont know what to do
You could try ghost shrimp but they'll most likely die to
My RES turtle ate all my algae eaters, so now my tank is full of algae, I’m having to clean it weekly. My local pet store only has baby ones, and I’m scared those will get eaten too. I’ll keep on keeping the tank clean on my own for now...
ahh that's too bad! It doesn't always work out unfortunately...
@@TheTurtleGirl Yes, unfortunately. They did live together for almost a year, but my turtle outgrown all her tankmates.
I have a musk turtle. Would an algae eater be okay? x
Wow! That is amazing!
thanks Joel :)
Wow, I am totally getting an algae eater for my Reeves turtle tank! He has a few platys right now that he has only eaten one in the past month, so hopefully I don't buy him an expensive snack!!!😁
haha that's the risk that's always run!
my baby res wont swim i checked temps and all and he is only half way full of water in his tank to so idk
My tanks all set up about to get turtles. My local aquarium said I can’t have fish with them
it's definitely a hit or miss kind of situation
I got a hatchling Eastern Painted Turtle and I named him Nemo
aw
@@TheTurtleGirl I will take the best possible care of him
This video made my day
hope you have a good one :)
@@TheTurtleGirl thank you so much!!
Do you have a video on how to safely move your turtle from a old tank to a new tank???if now do you have advice on major things I need to know
Hmmm, I don't know if I've done that specifically Emily! I'll put it on the list of ideas :) although most of the time, when introducing em to the new setup, you can just drop em in there!
What kind of turtle is that? Such a cutie 😭💞
diamondback terrapin :)
I just got my two baby turtle today, one male and one female 🥰
Nice! Congrats!
I'll definitely have to take a look at getting an algae eater for my turtle tank 🤔 what would you feed him while the tank is algae-free?
I believe you can feed them certain veggies for the time being or they can also eat the uneaten food your fish or turtle leaves behind if you feed them in the tank
The algae wafers I feed my mystery snails say they are for the algae fish too.
yep, they sometime eat the uneaten food, or I occasionally drop in an algae wafer/vegetable based food.
One of my My goldfish died yesterday. The other 3 were sick. Their scales are falling off. I put red eared slider at night b cos of the heat.could it be the cause of this..🙏
oh no!
Do you have any other recommendations? My turtle keeps attacking the algae eater and i don't know what else to do
so close!!!
What kinds of turtles could I keep in a 40 gallon breeder tank?
striped mud turtles and musk turtles are a couple I think of right off the bat. :)
I really appreciate you.
thanks!
In that video you said "algae" 27 times and "algae eater" 7 times 😂
Hey am having problems with my pond it's full of algae should I buy a algae fish
well, it depends on the amount and also if there's a different easy remedy.... if it's a pond, that's kind of a lot to deal with.
Its a 40 gallon pond with a turtle
Great video
thanks Pedro!
From where can I give my turtle worms? Do I need to buy them or I can take them from my garden? 😅
if you don't use pesticides or chemicals it should be fine. but bait worms usually work fine also!
Thanks! 👍🏻
Is there a long term update for this video?
haha actually no! The algae eater did last another good several months after this video was posted...but if I remember correctly sometime in the fall he met his demise :/ However, my musk turtles have an algae eater and he's doing just dandy!
If you want another algae eater to try, I would try a rainbow shark.
appreciate the suggestion!
What type of turtle
where did u buy ur algae eater
Local fish store!
I was about to leave the video when you said end of day 2
haha wait there is more!
algae eaters makes mroe dirt then they remove their poop have to be removed. and my turtles ate mine
big in the video, I've been here for undici giga
Thanks for stopping by!
of nothing now you have a new member
Love it
thanks!
Take a shot every time she says alge!
Bought one and the turtle ate it.
Are you ever going to get a Fly River turtle
haha likely not but they sure are incredible!
Can you put an aquatic frog with a turtle
would not recommend
I had a bad experience with a algae eater like this it eats your fishes slime coat.
it's definitely possible, however, in my case, the turtle is too interested in eating the algae eater that they wouldn't even get close to sucking on it's shell 😂👍🏽
What kind of turtle is that
diamondback terrapin :)
I feel bad that Nemo passed away 😢.
Do a getting wood and rocks from the outdoors viedeo pls
Eventually Everett!
Algae = 38 times said
Algae eater = 8 times said
oh my gosh 😂😭you actually went back and counted...
you're a real one 👊🏽
@@TheTurtleGirl Omg thank you sooo much love you
Why not just buy another Chinese fish for the tank downstairs they are not expensive it just makes sense instead of stressing 1 fish out moving back and forth
definitely considering it! that's a great suggestion.
Wait Nemo is gone??? Oh I'm so sorry. 😞
unfortunately, he passed away at the beginning of the year 😢 I did a video on it. thanks for your condolences.
I would love one in my tank but it’ll probably get eaten :(
Or… you could just use a magnet and scrape the glass of algae and also wipe the decor .. and stop being lazy.. alage is also good for the echo system in the tank .. so having some is beneficial … I’m a past reptile keeper in many different reptiles . But I’m also an aquarist .. I do fresh water and salt water .. we scrub our glass and do water changes … easy.. moving the fish around just stresses it.. it’s also not your get out of jail free card on hopes of being lazy… just saying…
hey turtle girl, i think i will be a good tankmate there, take me away from my damn boring lone setup.
AW when did nemow die
at the beginning of the year. I did a video on it :(
So lucky I bought some and they got eaten :(
bummer :(
Just now after 7mons my turtle decide to eat one of its tank mate. Sadly it's one of my algae eater haha
aw bummer!
Could you do an axolotl video? Please
