Not quite true. It was Julia's sister, Aunt Mimi who had Julia declared as an unfit mother. When John was in his early teens, Julia taught him how to play the banjo and ukulele. John's father Freddie, a merchant seaman, only showed any interest in John after John became famous.
Lennon was raised by his aunt Mimi, his mother's sister. his mother Julia left him to her (Lennon wrote the song Julia which is on The White Album) and his father left when he was young. Lennon as a teen started seeing his mother again and she taught him banjo chords for guitar. as he was reconnecting with her she was killed in a car accident by a drunk off-duty policeman. His father reconnected with Lennon after he became famous which lasted a short time.
Also worth noting that John's father only seemed to be interested in John because of his money and fame. He put out his own song just a few weeks after The Beatles' Rubber Soul but John allegedly had the record stopped through his industry connections.
He went through primal scream therapy and it took a lot of guts to record and release this. He gave so much of himself to all of us. Makes you wonder what he would have done if wasn't killed by a psyco. His last album Double Fantasy is beautiful!
This is part of a great, brilliant album. Many songs, like this one, are incredibly personal, raw, and powerful. Also highly recommended from the same LP is "God."
He also speaks of his son Julian, telling him "don't do what I've done" he ran from that responsibility and Julian hurt all his liife because of it. He and his fatherr did eventually find their way back to one another.
The lyrics of John Lennon’s “Mother” addresses both his father (Alfred Lennon) and mother (Julia Lennon). Both whom abandoned him in his childhood. His mother was knocked down and killed by a car driven by an off-duty policeman near her sister’s house. The song was featured in the film “Nowhere Boy” (2009) directed by Sam Taylor-Wood. Eminem also sampled the song in his song “Headlights” in his album “The Marshall Mathers EP” (2013). Lennon said while introducing the song in a 1972 live performance: … A lot of people thought [this song] was just about my parents, but it is about 99% of the parents, alive or half-dead.
You forget the most important part: his mother married another man after she separated from his father. And the new husband didn't want John. So she chose the husband instead of her son. She let John live with her sister Mimi. So that's why John says: 'you did't want me'. And his father left the family to go to see. So that is why John says 'You left me'. Obviously the words and their delivery are the most important aspect of this recording but the instrumentation and production are sensational . They add so much to the sentiments he expresses
His father walked out on his mother and him when John was less than 3. Being a single mother was looked down upon in society so his mom sent him to live with his aunt Mimi. Although they stayed close, they lived separate. She was killed by a drunken off duty police officer when John was 17. Paul lost his mom at 14, just 2 years earlier so the boys had a bonding emotional background. John's dad tried to get back in touch after John became famous, but John didn't want to have it.
John felt a rebirth in 1980 with the song (Just Like) Starting Over. The funeral bells that start Mother were replaced by chimes. Yet the assassin waited in the streets and denied him that.
I think John saw his mum die , after meeting her, she got knocked over by a car. He may've been doing Primal Scream Therapy too. The whole album is pretty great.
That’s a little unfair. John was not the perfect father, but he didn’t abandon Julian like his father. Julian still had a mother living. In fact, John had Julian played drums on his Walls and Bridges album. Julian had a successful music career, mainly because of his father.
His mother started another family with another man. It took a long time before he knew where she was and why she didn’t take him along. Then he started seeing her again and then she was hit by a car and killed.
Fil, yeah, John's parents were not ideal. Mum died in car crash, John tried to reconcile with his father. Yes, all you said. Yes, it's all in the vocal delivery. #QcumberSquad #JohnLennon - Fil, I'[m off back to the study.
Paul McCartney could never write something like this. Lennon could write very ornate melodic songs but around this time he stripped it down to make it ve all about the emotion and not about the melody. Not sure if I always can listen to this stuff as it's very emotional but also not necessarily that melodic. Still it's very powerful. The whole album is like this. The followup Imagine has some of the anger but a lot more pop and melody to balance it out.
Deep pain expressions in music is an outlet but not fuly healed yet because Yoko get a piece of his f..ked up childhood aswell. Greatest mistake in JL's life is to stay in the states (NY) during the Vietnam war and followed by the fbi as an unwanted immigrant. Not suprised he finally was killed by bullits in the country with a "history" of cowboys and guns where the natives has faced outruined by blankets.

Primal scream therapy . I played this all the time as a kid screaming with it , I’ll love Lennon until I die ☮️
It's beautiful. Sad and yet strong.

OMG, seriously, John Lennon singing Mother live at MSG will absolutely blow you away if you love this!!!!
He went through primal scream therapy and it took a lot of guts to record and release this. He gave so much of himself to all of us. Makes you wonder what he would have done if wasn't killed by a psyco. His last album Double Fantasy is beautiful!
Good bye. He makes peace through his pain.
This is part of a great, brilliant album. Many songs, like this one, are incredibly personal, raw, and powerful. Also highly recommended from the same LP is "God."
The best Beatles solo album of them all, imo. By far.
Sons and daughters, love and laughter, tears of sadness and happiness. We will find out our sons and daughters and what we two are all about.
He also speaks of his son Julian, telling him "don't do what I've done" he ran from that responsibility and Julian hurt all his liife because of it. He and his fatherr did eventually find their way back to one another.
Cutting pain. And acceptance.

It is a devistating song to be sure.
So sorry to see your sadness. I hope it helps to know how you and too many have pain and can share understanding

The song is so heartbreaking.
I'm a mother and I have one son and I would never, ever give him away.

John and Yoko were going through "Primal Scream" therapy, and this song is rife with his therapy.
But he did.. Found dad and g/f a home and paid for it, for years.
I always wondered what the driver being an off-duty policeman had to do with anything. Nothing I would suggest.

The whole album is pretty great.
Extremely haunting 😮 one of my fav lennon tune🤘❤️ its obvious, it wrecked him
Dont think Ive heard this one before, Lennon is epic
🤨
Funny how history repeats itself. John pretty much threw Julian away. Julian should write a song called "Father"

@@Twistypoo you are correct, Julian was talented on his own merit. I guess I only meant that being the son of John Lennon helped him a lot.
This was made during his primal scream therapy.
The live version is the best

Wow - so you've never read a single thing about Lennon's life? His childhood was a wreck, man.
Cleansing also.
He’s literally telling them goodbye
Parçalanmış ailelerin bedelini çocuklar öder😪
He didn't put any pictures at the beginning. This video was made decades after he died. How can you be so unaware as to not recognize that?
You're hearing funeral bells...
It takes a big sack of nuts to write something as personal and expose it to the world. Not everybody can do it. It takes a special individual.

John was born in the subway bunkers underground when the nazis were bombing england.
It's a perfect album, PLASTIC ONO BAND.
