The song Julia on the Beatles White Album is also about his mother. It 's beautiful song about him missing his mother who was killed by a drunk driver when he was a teenager. This strengthened his bond with his friend Paul McCartney who had also just lost his mother to cancer.
At the time, John was involved in Primal Scream Therapy. He wrote this song as a means of sharing what he thought was a universal source of pain for all people. It also allowed him to use PST ("Momma don't go; Daddy come home!!!!!"). The whole album (Plastic Ono Band) runs the gamut of emotions. One of my favorite albums and worthy of your time and efforts in understanding what John was trying to say.
Julian said John was a terrible father. I wonder what John's excuse was for that.

you got him. He barely knew his mother but adored her. He was raised by an aunt (aunt Mimi). To add insult to injury, his mother died in a car accident when he was still a child. His father left before he even knew him. Another song about his mother - from when he was part of The Rolling - I mean The Beatles - is "Julia" and it's more tender and sweet (which is a great song by the way)
People need to let her know which songs, just don't work live. I know they are safer, yet others have all got the LP track up and running. John was not good live after the early years.

@@MsAppassionata Then he was having a good night (singing confidently) Don't take my word. Listen to him in later live performances. Lennon performed nonstop, racking his voice when he was younger. That didn't help. John also produced Harry Nillson on the Pussy Cat album. Harry ruined his vocal cords on those sessions also.

John Lennon's mother didn't raise him, he was raised by his aunt Mary (Mimi). His father abandon John and his mother soon after John was born. In his late teenage years, John's mother came back into his life and John started to build a relationship with her. Soon after that, she was hit by a car and killed. This is John's pain and you can feel it in this song.
Not only that, but in John's mind, if he hadn't re-established a relationship with his Mother aged 14, she wouldn't have been run-over and killed by a an off-duty drunk Police Officer - she was run over outside his house, when he was 17. What a burdon for a 17 year old that's just lost his Mother. People dis John, knowing nothing of his pain.
Julia raised John for the first 5 years of his life, but her sister didn't like her lifestyle, Julia had a baby that she gave up for adoption because it was the product of an affair (technically the family forced her to give that baby up for adoption). and John didn't have a room of his own. So Mimi went to social services twice and only the second time they listened to her, although John really didn't lack anything or was mistreated. John probably had no idea what was happening or why he was being separated from his mother. Or why his sisters could live with his mother and he had to visit.
Alfred was away due to the war, he worked on a merchant navy ship, so he couldn't really return home. He didn't know if he was going to come back alive so he told Julia to move on even though they never divorced. After the war, Alfred then came back for John, who was already living with Mimi, and tried to take him to New Zealand but somehow Julia found out so she went to find John. Julia was able to take John, who returned to Mimi and Alfred disappeared.
When John grew up and was old enough to recognize how to get to his mother's house he would go there whenever he could or he would get in trouble, to avoid Mimi.

Wrong. John's friend Nigel Walley went to visit John and found Julia and Mimi talking by the front gate. John was not there, as he was at the Blomfield Road house. Walley accompanied Julia to the bus stop further north along Menlove Avenue with her, telling jokes along the way. At about 9:30, Walley left her to walk up Vale Road and she crossed Menlove Avenue to the central reservation between two traffic lines, which was lined with hedges that covered disused tram tracks. Moments later, Walley heard "a loud thud", and turned to see her body "flying through the air"-which landed about 100 feet from where she had been hit. He ran back to get Mimi and they waited for the ambulance, with Mimi crying hysterically.
Great reaction. John was abandoned by both parents at an early age, being brought up by a strict Aunt Mimi and her husband, Uncle George. He died when John was 12.
At 14 he discovered his Mother was actually still living in Liverpool, he'd been told she's "gone away". He re-establishes contact with his Mother and he and Paul would hang out there, doing there early music there.
When John was 17, his Mum, Julia, went to see her Siister Mimi but upon leaving the house, she was run over and killed by a drunk, off-duty Police Officer, just around the corner from the house!
So you've got the initial abandonment, then you get the confusion from discovering she's in Liverpool until finally you get the guilt - if he hadn't re-established links with his Mum, she wouldn't have been visiting the house!
That's a lot for a 17 year old to take on aboard. People didn't talk about this stuff back then, there was no such thing as therapy for this sort of trauma. John was a very caring Man, but he'd had to put up a lot of barriers, just to cope with the pain.
John adored Mimi and said she was worth more than all her siblings put together.
He was undergoing Primal Scream therapy, which was a new idea at the time to try to release as you say, but it involved screaming emotionally and letting it all out.
And of course being John Lennon, and a singer that always knew how to blend a bit of screaming into his rock voice, he found a way to incorporate it into music. He did this on another one as well and really actually two or three of them. But another one is called Cold Turkey.
Mary Elizabeth "Mimi" Smith (née Stanley; 24 April 1906 - 6 December 1991) was a maternal aunt and the parental guardian of the English musician John Lennon. Mimi Stanley was born in Toxteth, Liverpool, England, the oldest of five daughters. She became a resident trainee nurse at the Woolton Convalescent Hospital and later worked as a private secretary. On 15 September 1939 she married George Toogood Smith who ran his family's dairy farm and a shop in Woolton, a suburb of Liverpool.
After her younger sister Julia Lennon separated from her husband, Julia and her son, the young John Lennon, moved in with a new partner, but Smith contacted Liverpool's Social Services and complained about his sleeping in the same bed as the two adults. Julia was eventually persuaded to hand over the care of John to the Smiths. He lived with the Smiths for most of his childhood and remained close to his aunt, even though she was highly dismissive of his musical ambitions, his girlfriends and wives. She often told the teenage Lennon: "The guitar's all right, John, but you'll never make a living out of it".
In 1965, John bought her a bungalow in Poole, Dorset, where she lived until her death in 1991. Despite later losing touch with other family members, he kept in close contact with Mimi and telephoned her every week until his death in 1980. The Smiths' house in Liverpool was later donated to The National Trust.
I can see why he needs to remain loose while performing this song. I'm amazed he would perform it live at all. It's such a personal statement. But that's why people loved, and love, him so much. He hit some important things people were dealing with dead on and didn't flinch. After The Beatles, John didn't seem to care much about the charts; he only expressed himself and let us into the process.

You need to hear "Imagine", his most iconic song. From Wikipedia:

A lot of people think imagine is sacreligious. I really don’t think that. It’s a song expressing the hope of peace among all.

She should then listen to Steely Dan's "Only a Fool Would Say That" ripping him for his hypocrisy on Imagine. Lennon also admitted it was virtually the communist manifesto.
John was going through "Primal Therapy" when he wrote this (Primal Therapy is where you Literally face a Mirror and Scream at your pain and anger). John's childhood was like a Greek Tragedy. He also lost his Mother Julia Suddenly when he was 17, when she was struck by a Car.
John was involved in a therapy at the time he wrote this song called Primal Scream Therapy. Thus the screams in the song.

The irony of this song is that John essentially abandoned his child from his first marriage. Cycles repeat, echo down the generations.

John was basically an orphan...raised by his aunt. Then his uncle died, then his mother died...then his best friend. John had a huge weight of his shoulders! This dove him to become the greatest musician of my generation! Watch the Documentary Imagine!
And Strawberry Fields its about an orphanage nearby and its a happy memory, but also daily he sees it and thinks about orphans and relating to them. He would explore Strawberry Fields.

There was a lot of pain in that man from childhood traumas. It could come out in his biting and sometimes harsh humor. But thankfully he also channeled it to his art and underlying hope for mankind instead of means that were more destructive to mankind. It also came out in his addictions to narcotics which I believe he was probably overcoming about this time (check out his song Cold Turkey) and may be why he was chewing gum during performances at this time.

One point re: his issues with authority, the guy who killed his mother was a drunk off duty cop. And it was witnessed. But the witnesses were ignored and the cop was officially cleared and John’s entire family were enraged. This song was written after he went into primal scream therapy decades later still trying to find a way out of the anger and pain. Edit, to be clear, he killed her drunk driving, not like it was intentional murder.
He had a rough childhood as far as his parents go. Dad was gone very early and his mom had to give him up because of social services issues and then died when he was in his teens when she was his by a car. But at least his mother's sister took him and did a great job raising him. His uncle was also a very special and positive influence over him challenging him to think for himself and call things for what they are and not sugar coat it. His uncle also taught him to play harmonica.
John's gum-chewing was probably more of a defense mechanism as he was still early in his solo career and had not performed live in a while. The classic "Mother" song appeared on his brilliant first album (Plastic Ono Band, 1970) and referenced the pain of his mother leaving him twice, first as a child and then suddenly (via being hit by a car driven by a drunk policeman) as a teenager after he'd become close to her again. She helped teach him guitar. His father was a merchant seaman who was never around. John was raised by his strict aunt but he still was rather wild. Music saved him. That whole album deals with pain and is quite minimalist. The song "God" is another superb one from that album, as is "Isolation."
What about “Working Class Hero”?
Yes, outstanding in sort of a folk style. I think it's better known than the others and not quite as darkly or painfully introspective.

I am so impressed by your insights into both this song and to John Lennon. It's rather easy for those of us who were around during the 60's and 70's to understand the pain and hurt he surely felt all throughout his life. He, in effect, ;lost his mother twice; once when she relinquished custody of young John to his Aunt Mimi, and the 2nd time when she was killed by a drunk off duty policeman. His father, Freddie, left them when John was very young, only to reappear after John and The Beatles had become world renowned. Well done!☮
Love how he says Goodbye to his mother and father, like I don't need you anymore, neither of you were there for me. Then at the end 'Momma don't go, daddy come home'. No, he still really needs them in his life. Very sad song
The performance is from a concert at Madison Square Garden. The overlayed Japanese subtitles would have been added for perhaps a TV broadcast in Japan many years later (an album of most of the concert was released in the mid 80s and a video was released sometime after that; I remember buying the laserdisc probably in the early 90s) or possibly by whoever uploaded that copy of the video to youtube.
I'm sure John and Yoko visited Japan but they never moved there. They moved to NYC in the early 70s, but it took a while for John to get his green card (the Nixon administration wasn't too keen on some of the protest causes he latched onto).
Do listen to the studio version even if only for yourself, it begins with these really sad bells ringing, they return in his final album song "Just like starting over" in a totally happy festive manner representing how his (inner) life had changed. The video has images of both his parents.

You’re totally right in your interpretation of this song. John was left by both his parents at a young age and suffered from insecurity for most of his life. When the Beatles broke up he started to use his music to explore the emotional impact of his early experiences. The LP John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band is often, rightfully, regarded as maybe the most brutally personal album ever made. Well worth reacting to any of the songs from it - a real masterpiece 👍
Just as he was making a relationship with his Mom when he was a teenager, an off-duty-drunk Police officer ran her over and she died. Hence the "good bye". Paul McCartney also lost his mum and they had this in common. In the movie "Two of Us", John gets in an argument with a policeman in central park. It's a brilliant scene.

Lennon was into primal scream therapy at the time he wrote/recorded 'Mother'. The heart-wrenching end of the song is his primal scream. So much pain coming through. He had said the song was not just about his parents, but true for about 99% of us.
All of the Beatles had a killer wit, John especially so, and loved to play with words. Check out their interviews and you'll see, even their earliest. So when he mentioned leaving the Rolling Stones he was entertaining himself by being cheeky

WoW! You are very perceptive. He was engaged in Primal Therapy during the time around when the song was created. It's literally going back to your early or primal scream. By this performance he wasnt still in that therapy but he is channeling it here.

Taken from the world at 40, i was nine when it happened, and I cried my eyes out when I heard he was killed😥
Lennon's parents separated shortly after his birth but never divorced. Lennon's mother lost custody of him when she moved in with another man while still married and he was taken in by his aunt who became his legal guardian. However his mother remained in his life until her early death at age 44 when Lennon was still a teenager.
Other comments will give you the history of Lennon's family trauma, but you were on so on point with the rhythm. The original studio track has a spartan kick drum orientated rhythm laid down by Ringo with a sparse bass line by Klaus Voorman. To me its intention was to mimic the heartbeat of the mother when one is in the womb. Very clever but harrowing song.

I remember reading somewhere that Elton John, who was pretty close to John Lennon, said Lennon always got “stage fright” and was nervous doing live performances so maybe his gum chewing was a tool for calming himself down?
@angelskunk2206, He didn't chew gums when he sang, you can't chew gums when you sing, if you chew gums then you can't sing properly. He simply tried to minimize the amount of saliva in his mouth while singing, because too much saliva in your mouth when you sing will ruin your singing. He did that by amassing the saliva and swallowing it, which makes it appear as if he was chewing gums.

You nailed it! That’s exactly what it is about. In the end that called Primal Scream Therapy screams. The entire album is an immersive and cathartic ,therapeutic experience.The songs were the most and honest for those people who had issues but in those days no one spoke of pain, you never told the world your business ,we were expected to shove it down and get on with it. 🙄 ☮️
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was the early 90's. However, my parents were really lovely, despite any short coming.
John's mom wanted to leave him with her sister for a while when he was 5. Sister said only leave him if you will stay away. His father had left and gave no support. John and mother got together when he was 15, but she was soon killed by a drunk driver. I can't remember if this was the concert just before or after he and second wife Yoko were reunited. She was either on the front row or on stage with him. Then they had Sean, and John was full time dad five years. John was shot in public in front of Yoko and died.

His orginal draft for Yellow Submarine is also quite sad for whatever reason; he was heavily abused, and the lyrics were originally “in the town, where I was born, no one cared, no one came.”
The song is a therapy song.. An older guy reflecting on what happened in his childhood and teenage years. You can look up the story which explains itself but the "Goodbye" is recognising what happened and saying goodbye to it and moving on.
John was brought up by his Aunt Mimi. John died in 1980. Eleven years later (1991) Mimi died. According to Lynne Varcoe, Mimi's nurse, Mimi's last words were "Hello, John".
I remember reading that he was born on a night during a heavy Nazi air raid bombing mission by the Germans in WW2 . He died in 1980 shot to death in front of his own home in New York. He was 40 . Heavy entrance , heavy exit .

Lennon said stopping his record and release cycle was one of the hardest things he did. He'd been recording and releasing a single every 6 months for his adult life. He had to learn how to not focus on that.

Amazing insight. It’s a painful song. Would you believe that this was the single off his first album after the Beatles? The album Plastic Ono Band is a brutal album. A masterpiece, but brutal. It must be listened to in full.
You got so many things right, the pacing, the changing tones and intensity. After knowing more about his life growing up... how else could a person react? Most people hide, he wrote sings that wake all of us, brilliance that few achieve. Paul helped him portray much of his feelings in ways that hid some of the darkness while highlighting his greatness. Yoko enabled him bringing out the darker side of his thoughts.
It's about him, but it's also universal. He was a genius at doing that in his lyrics. Personal and profound.
That was one of the 4 reasons The Beatles were so great.

John's best music (IMO) usually comes from this place. Deeply traumatic childhood, and an unhealthy type of coping mechanistic mother-related obsession. Some of his most tender and beautiful songs are absolutely oozing with it. "Julia", "Mother" (as you've just heard) for example. His nickname for Yoko, his wife, was also "Mother". Fascinating and extremely vulnerable man, which IMO often showed itself in his impulsive and sometimes violent nature sadly. Genius.
McCartney/Lennon wrote a song for The Rolling Stones called I want to be your man early in their career. The Beatles released it on one of their albums later.
His mother was a middle class girl . His Fahrer was a sailor who left him before Lennon lernen to know him. His mother gave him to his aunt. Later Lennon found his mother again and she was as great and wonderful as he had always hoped. But then she died in a car accident Wien He was 16.
John also liked to play with his voice in regards to the words being sung and he was able to do impossible vocal carry overs aned twists to get the right effects, today it's called vocal gymnastics. He had a fatherly figure like vocality about his voice, which made him endearing to everyone. Plus he had a deep sense of humor too. I loved the guy, he's like an adopted honorary brother for life, and I've got 3 real brothers too.
George Harrison described Lennon as "acid". Bowie described him as someone that cut through the bullshit. This is a really tough song to listen to. His mother was a wild child and he was passed to her sister because she was too wild. His father skipped town before John got a chance to know him. In early teenage years he started to connect again with his mom. But suddenly she was killed in an auto accident. Early twenties his best friend Stu also died unexpectedly. Everybody left him. That's the acid part. He can bring that sharp, cutting edge to the Beatles. Yes it is child like - intentionally.
Being a child of the 60s, I grew up with the Beatles. I didn't follow their solo careers tho. This is my 1st time hearing Mother as well. I'm betting others have been affected by it too!

Yes, John was a Beatle, but was friendly with the Stone's.
He tended to just share his emotions and thoughts ("Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ"😮), this made him a great songwriter during the British Invasion 🎶 and pre-disco years but also caused problems.
IIRC, John was denied entry into the USA in 1969 because he spoke openly against involvement in Vietnam. So he & wife Yoko had a sit-in protest in Amsterdam Netherlands and just across the US border in Montreal Canada. They sat in a hotel bed for several days - many activists and celebrities came to "bed-in" with them, often ~20 persons in the room for most of the day just speaking out & singing.
In December 1980 John & Yoko returned to their NYC apartment after a day at a recording studio. A disgruntled fan fired 5 bullets - 4 found John's back. He was DOA at Roosevelt Hospital. 😢 Just as shocking as the deaths of Elvis or Micheal Jackson. 💔

G'day folks. I feel this is a good point in the video to relate. My father 'disappeared' before I was born and then I didn't meet him until I was 14. Of course I was naturally gonna relate to John Lennon. Beatles 4 Ever!
John’s mother came back into his life when he was 16. They established a relationship akin to that of great friends as opposed to mother and son. Tragically when crossing the street to go and visit him,she was hit by a car and killed.
His mother left him to be raised by his Aunt. As a young teenager his mother and him began to have a relationship until she was run over and died crossing a street. Paul McCartney also lost his mom at the age of 14. So they had that in common. Plus his father was a merchant seaman who wasn't around either. Only to show up for handouts once John became famous.
Hi and thanks for this. For me personally this is one John Lennon's greatest songs, taken from what for me is possibly his best solo album. The album also contains what is for me one of the very few songs that actually matter in 'Working Class Hero.'

I had been his fan even before I knew what rock'n roll was, and I remember crying a lot by the time I knew he died.

I got the worst beating a human probably every got when i was 15 taking up for her was hit with everything they could find not just the mother and father but all the bikers there lasted for at least 30 minutes. I'm sure there in hell now getting what they gave on earth.😢

John met Yoko Ono, an already established avant garde artist from Japan, in New York. She moved to New York with her family in the 1950s. She met John in the U.S., not in Japan. They were married from 1969 until 1980 when John was murdered. A great artist in her own right, not just a footnote!
