Always subjective, but for me the driving experience and cockpit comfort, as well range and charging speed (200+ kWh plus pre-conditioning) culminated in me ordering almost the same spec, only diff was Tanzanite Blue with Privacy glass. Received last week and have to say, already 600 miles in, absolutely loving it and it is everything I had it would be. Even though still new and tight, already averaging 3.5kWh/mile. One thing I didn’t know was how good voice control is, no longer care about climate controls!
Is it comfortable? I have a Mercedes A class 18 months, previously had a C class and it’s so uncomfortable!! Thinking of getting the i4 but worried about comfort as myself and my husbands have arthritis and the A class is for kids with no comfort in the cabin. (I know the A class is a cheaper car)
@@ItsWendiewe got one today and the size is very similar to the c30. Not for long legs and bigger bodies for sure. You will feel a bit tighter. Other than that. It is excellent electric car. It is not a problem to charge it at the super charge stations.❤
@@hjlee7058 I’m pretty slim, but the A class is so small compared to the C class. I will have a test drive of the bmw had a 3 class diesel several years ago and it was fine inside. Mercedes are great with the extras and cabin fit out, but the A class is so small it’s definitely made for rich young Chinese grads.
I think your initial reaction to the electric car experience is a very valid one for manufactures to take note of. Many new to this mode of locomotion may feel exactly the same and also jump to conclusions too quickly. At 3:08 that rear tyre looks very flat
I have I4 drive 40. It’s a super car. The range of the car is unbelievable. Iam getting a range of 610 - 620 Kms in long drives which is above the claim of BMW which is 590 Kms .
Thanks for the review. Few car reviewers have the courage to "change their minds!" That is very fair of you and commendable. The earliest BMW cars had narrow vertical grill sections looked like two side-by-side oval (vertically) elongate sections, not "kidneys" or "nasal" pieces as in more recent years. So the new grill harks back to its history. BMW loves its heritage. I share your love of red interior seat coverings -- regardless of whether leather or "feaux leather." Having leased 5 series BMW cars for decades, I rather like my TESLA Model 3 -- no need for all the additional service/maintenance fees that I see as "dealership enrichment" options. Teslas are virtually maintenance-free -- at least after 2.5 years with a Model 3 that is my experience. No upselling of superfluous services. That said, I do like this i4. I like the more conventional instruments and the familiarity for a former BMW driver. My concerns would be the upcharges relating to service/maintenance whether you buy or lease in the USA. I think until manufacturers can rid themselves of dealers in the EV space, their efforts will always be handicapped at the dealer level. They steer buyers to cars with IC engines that generate revenue for them and away from EVs where there is no after-sale profit unless they scare you into pricey optional service/maintenance packages that really are not essential for EVs at all. (in the US, BMW also upcharges for Apple Car play or the Android equivalent these days on a monthly/annual fee basis. )

Awesome video, really appreciate you walking through the practical issues like range, menus, and storage. As many other reviewers have said, you ride _in_ the i4 vs riding _on_ other EVs like TM3. Between about 7:40 and 10:40 the audio was out of sync.
Nice review - thanks. Would be more keen to use the touring variant of this car - rather than the coupe. Unfortunately BMW does not seem to have any plans in this direction ...
Great review Tish. The back nearside tyre looks flat judging by the state of the sidewall or is it an illusion? No matter how long its been out, I still don't like the grille at all. Its a nuisance because I want to buy a G81M3 Touring. We can't get the M340i or M340D here in Australia so if I want a fast BMW Wagon (estate car in the UK) I am stuck with the M3 touring....and that grille. I might try hypnosis to get over my grille-phobia.

I actually got the chance to breifly drive an i4 at a work event last week and, I must admit, I was blown away. I am only 24 though and it's by far the most expensive thing I've driven 😂One thing I'm feeling smug about though - my 2013 Mazda MX5 also has 5 stages for the heated seats
I only get 3.2mi /kWh with very conservative defensive driving style on Eco in the city and some motorway. What am I doing wrong? I read here people get 4-5 mi?
Great review. In the i4 eDrive40 I've achieved an average of 4.2mi/kWh in normal use and 5.1 when hypermiling. It's all about making sure all the assistance systems are set correctly and are used. Also, all motoring journalists mention the location of the climate controls, but no one is yet to point out just how good the "hey BMW" voice control is for this, in addition to just about everything else. It's quicker and safer.

I have the EDrive 40 MSport but I haven’t seen range anywhere close to the 300miles mark let alone the BMW officially advertised range. Would appreciate your suggestions/recommendations. Thank you

Blimey, that's impressive. I've only managed to get up to 3.6m/kWh driving as carefully as I can, having cruise control on as often as possible. Driving "normally" which includes the odd overtake, and quick spurt up the road, I can get around 2.8 to 3 m/kWh. I do have the M Sport Pro pack and the 19" wheels though. And this is all in B mode. Did a 164 mile trip on the motorway last week, and averaged 3m'kWh, but that was at 70 mph nearly all the wa, and in the rain for some of it. So I suppose a max range of 240 miles at 70 mph is ok. I can only dream of seeing 4m/kWh.
Well done with this vid. Had my I4 E40 Msport since last October and its a superb car in my opinion. regularly get between 3.5 and 4+ miles /Kwhr with sensible driving and even when pushed harder it gets 3miles/Kwhr and thats in winter tempretures. Its more than quick enough for most drivers and comfortable too. I considered an Ev6 GT and tried one recently but that only made me realise how good the Bmw is. Comparisons to Tesla often given but really dont stack up in my opinion. The Tesla has great tech and a good charging network, but thats where it ends as the styling of the car, inside and out, plus poor fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired. Eveything just works in the Bmw so well and goes like a proper drivers car. Love it.
I have ordered an i4 for exactly the reason you stated. It just looks and feels like a car. It's not trying to be something new just because it's electric which is what I hate about just about every other electric car I tested.

Honestly I cannot really judge the electric car sector, never driven one. After observing different reviews the Honda Civic, not a true electric car but, would be my choice. The BMW is still quite a smart car. Definitely wouldnt say no. Thanks for the economy test and general review.

When I first saw the grill I was disgusted but yesterday I saw one parked outside of gym and was like huh, moving on, the new bmw face with time doesn't disgust me anymore nor do I like it, I just accepted it Overall I like the car, I just hope they take a page of the Hyundai playbook and stick back in some physical buttons and maybe redesign the surrounding area of the infotainment screen so that it is slightly better integrated
The i4 was always brilliant. For some reason it's fashionable to hate on BMWs and I don't know why people like doing it but there are a number of car reviewers that I've seen bash the BMW but now have to admit that they were wrong.
When car is turned off main high voltage battery is disconnected. 12v is used to actuate contactor which turns on high voltage 400v. It's for safety, not range

While the nose is still a deal breaker for me, I think otherwise the car is a compelling choice. It has good range, driving feel for an electric, a nice interior, and decent storage.
Cancelled my Tesla order and gone for an i4 Msport Pro instead. I get all the things that Tesla are good at, but for me, the Beemer is a far better driving experience
The 89 kWh battery weighs more than my 750 kg Aygo. At 2.1-Tons, how much more quickly will potholes be appearing in our roads? Logistically, which is a real world condition we all have to live with, these vehicles are not feasible on the same scale as current vehicle numbers. Nevertheless, it does have etched chrome detailing down the centre console, and a leather clad steering wheel.
Folk need to move past the Tesla killer line. Having alternatives is a good thing for buyers so they can get an electric car they like and one that suits their needs. On paper a Model Y is what I should have, but I'm much happier in my Ioniq 5.
Yep I agree, everyone compares everything to Tesla an how fast they are, yeh they are fast but Tesla's look absolutely horrible looking, there's much better looking EVs out there that to 0 to 60 in 6 or 7 seconds which is plenty quick enough for UK, Kia ev6 rwd or Mach e rwd with extended range or jaguar I pace , these are much better looking cars and practical for familys too with decent range 👍👌🏴
I’ve had many BMW’s in the past and now looking to replace my Polestar 2 (First Edition). This car unfortunately won’t be on my shopping list, styling just doesn’t do it for me…. Shame, I’m sure it’s a good car.
What is it about people moaning about the heater control. It’s climate controlled ffs, you set it, you forget it. It does it all for you! And if it’s cold enough to worry about defogging, you simply pre-condition the car before getting in! If you’re someone who has to use an automatic system in a manual way, then you’re either thick, or you like making work for yourself. BTW, I’ve owned my i4 for 6 months and never touch the heater controls.
No Tesla for me from day one. Maybe in another 1-3 years. They the value drops like crazy in about 1.5 year. Who wants to take a huge loss when owners find thathe same or a better newer car comes out 40% cheaper?😂😢
Sorry, this is just an advert. You haven’t been at all balanced, nothing negative about the car, really? I own an i4 and I am a life long bmw fan. The car is disappointing to me as for £60k I expect better quality. The doors slam harshly, the m sport seats feel cheap and in real world eco driving at 10 degrees I am not getting more than 240 miles on a full charge. Oh and one thing you’re not told before you buy is you are not meant to charge the batteries above 80%! So that 300+ range is nonsense.
they are frameless doors, ofc they close harshly. and ofc you can charge the battery above 80%... who told you that you couldn't? it's just better for daily use if you charge it to 80% for the health of the battery, if you need longer range charge to 100%. this is the same with every single electric car. you can easily get 300 miles on 100%. Also you chose the Msport seats, they are for performance not comfort. should have chosen different ones. :/ even the base sport seats feel more premium imo.

This is the only EV car i want, not those ugly tractors with high seating position. High seating positions are for bus drivers. BMW nailed it with this car, and i’m anything but a BMW fanboy. Poor review. You were clearly driving slowly to maintain those range figures. Try driving it in winter at -5 degrees at motorway speeds with 2 passengers and the heater on with a headwind. Then you will see how bad it really is. 120 to 170 miles at best.

But the fact is on a fast road long road trip such as Bjorn Nyland does comparisons, the i4 is in the upper rankings. Hey, did you know gas cars get crappy MPG when you drive them fast in the city? I could get 35mpg in my Mini Cooper I was testing on the highway, but averaged 16mpg for my entire month.

The dashboard should have a Tesla screen which will make it more modern and the silver parts covering the center console should be replaced will either wood or shiny black plastic which looks much better. A better headrest for the rear seats, what is that anyway? The steering is the best part of the interior ,the fatter the steering the more sporty it looks ,but make it a flat bottom steering and it looks even better.
This will be down to personal preference! One of the reasons why I chose the i4 over a Tesla is because I do not like the Tesla style screen and interior. With respect to wood and piano black trims, they are both available on the i4; there are a few trims to choose from.

The first i4 you reviewed looked like the M50 with 20 inch wheels which has the least range. The i4 eDrive40 with 18 inch wheels has best range.

While the nose is still a deal breaker for me, I think otherwise the car is a compelling choice. It has good range, driving feel for an electric, a nice interior, and decent storage.
Seeing it alive changed the things for me, needed some time but i like it now.

Cancelled my Tesla order and gone for an i4 Msport Pro instead. I get all the things that Tesla are good at, but for me, the Beemer is a far better driving experience

Folk need to move past the Tesla killer line. Having alternatives is a good thing for buyers so they can get an electric car they like and one that suits their needs. On paper a Model Y is what I should have, but I'm much happier in my Ioniq 5.

Yep I agree, everyone compares everything to Tesla an how fast they are, yeh they are fast but Tesla's look absolutely horrible looking, there's much better looking EVs out there that to 0 to 60 in 6 or 7 seconds which is plenty quick enough for UK, Kia ev6 rwd or Mach e rwd with extended range or jaguar I pace , these are much better looking cars and practical for familys too with decent range 👍👌🏴
I’ve had many BMW’s in the past and now looking to replace my Polestar 2 (First Edition). This car unfortunately won’t be on my shopping list, styling just doesn’t do it for me….

What is it about people moaning about the heater control. It’s climate controlled ffs, you set it, you forget it. It does it all for you! And if it’s cold enough to worry about defogging, you simply pre-condition the car before getting in! If you’re someone who has to use an automatic system in a manual way, then you’re either thick, or you like making work for yourself. BTW, I’ve owned my i4 for 6 months and never touch the heater controls.

Sorry, this is just an advert. You haven’t been at all balanced, nothing negative about the car, really? I own an i4 and I am a life long bmw fan. The car is disappointing to me as for £60k I expect better quality. The doors slam harshly, the m sport seats feel cheap and in real world eco driving at 10 degrees I am not getting more than 240 miles on a full charge. Oh and one thing you’re not told before you buy is you are not meant to charge the batteries above 80%! So that 300+ range is nonsense.
they are frameless doors, ofc they close harshly. and ofc you can charge the battery above 80%... who told you that you couldn't? it's just better for daily use if you charge it to 80% for the health of the battery, if you need longer range charge to 100%. this is the same with every single electric car. you can easily get 300 miles on 100%.
Also you chose the Msport seats, they are for performance not comfort. should have chosen different ones. :/ even the base sport seats feel more premium imo.

This is the only EV car i want, not those ugly tractors with high seating position. High seating positions are for bus drivers. BMW nailed it with this car, and i’m anything but a BMW fanboy. The Polestar 2 is a good looking car as well. But… to firm and in the seat you are to high up, feeling disconnected from the road.

they have better electric features than this, (frunk, charging infrastructure etc) but as a car the Tesla is far far behind. far cheaper interior, looks plain, newer ones don't even have stalks ffs. just terrible driving experience.
Poor review. You were clearly driving slowly to maintain those range figures. Try driving it in winter at -5 degrees at motorway speeds with 2 passengers and the heater on with a headwind. Then you will see how bad it really is. 120 to 170 miles at best.

@@hotrod182 Well it is a poor review because it not giving true facts on the BMW I4's real range. Just a nice fluffy "look how good they are" report And yes all EV's would be the same. That's why in countries with variable weather conditions and cold winters they are a waste of time, as people are now beginning to realise. Just type in to YT "Don't buy a BMW I4" and you will see a proper review.
@@conradmilson6654 Like I said, I guess you will have to harp on a thousand other EV reviews. Its a well known fact that all EVs get worse economy in the winter. But the fact is on a fast road long road trip such as Bjorn Nyland does comparisons, the i4 is in the upper rankings. Hey, did you know gas cars get crappy MPG when you drive them fast in the city? I could get 35mpg in my Mini Cooper I was testing on the highway, but averaged 16mpg for my entire month.

@@AutoSocialUK Well beauty and style just to name a few. The dashboard should have a Tesla screen which will make it more modern and the silver parts covering the center console should be replaced will either wood or shiny black plastic which looks much better. A better headrest for the rear seats, what is that anyway? The steering is the best part of the interior ,the fatter the steering the more sporty it looks ,but make it a flat bottom steering and it looks even better.
This will be down to personal preference! One of the reasons why I chose the i4 over a Tesla is because I do not like the Tesla style screen and interior. With respect to wood and piano black trims, they are both available on the i4; there are a few trims to choose from.
