  • Frank Herbert wrote over 30 bestselling books during his lifetime, including the now classic six novels set in the Dune universe. The first book, Dune, won both the Nebula and Hugo awards and is still the worldΓÇÖs bestselling science fiction novel. When Frank Herbert died in 1986 he left behind the outlines for the continuation of the Dune saga, though they were hidden in two safe deposit boxes for over a decade. Following his death his son Brian Herbert compiled a massive Dune concordance and then, with writer Kevin J. Anderson, completed the saga with two trilogies and most recently Hunters of Dune. Herbert and Anderson will be here to discuss their collaboration on these books and their final grand climax to the Dune Chronicles, Sandworms of Dune, where key figures from the Dune saga continue to fight for the survival of the human species.

    The best thing about the original series were Frank’s little writings at the start of each and every chapter. They were brilliant. Although Brian carried on this tradition the pieces were never as poingant or meaningful as Franks

      I read Dune Messiah as a teenager and didn't like it...I was shocked at what Paul had become. Now, 30 years later I get it. Herbert very much intended for Paul to become an anti-hero. As I got older, I finally "got" what he was saying. It was all brilliant.

    I can’t imagine being given life as Frank Herbert’s son, and spending it to gain a reputation as dollar store rip off of Frank. I would be too embarrassed to do what he does so proudly. If any other person on the planet did what he does, society literally wouldn’t let him publish it. It’s sad that if Brian has any respectable talent, very few will know because of what he decided his career would be. Sad.

    Brian Herbert is a 'bread writer lacking his fathers talent.
    Frank Herbert created a multi layered universe with complicated characters, He wrote relatively few books in his life. Most of them classics. Brian & Anderson wrote at least (?) Dune book a year. But sadly he reduces the story tol 'simpel 'good versus evil '. the art of Franks Herbert's fine tuned Dune universe, reduces to fast written 'young adult' S.F ' series.

    Just cause the son of the original author isn't as educated or as experienced in other fields of study which inspired his father to make one of the greatest books to have ever been written does not mean that you can discount the prequels, the conclusion books of the Dune series or even the BJ-MC-BoC books as not canon. Saying what Brian has done, as son and legal heir to the franchise, is not part of the Dune universe as many many many idiots do and discounting his works is exactly the logical equivalent of dismissing anything Christopher Tolkien has done to add to his own father's legacy in the LOTR universe. The owners of the series are the ones who dictate what is or is not canon especially when they are the biological son of the original author and uses notes directly from their own father's archives. The new books do lack the sophistication and layers of nuance that the originals had because they are written by very different people with different backgrounds. Brian is basically just a writer is father was more than just that because he brought his knowledge of many different subjects and wove it into the narrative. His son is just continuing that legacy however lack-luster people may feel it is in comparison. But again discounting the new material as non-canon is not your choice to make no matter how important you think your opinion is. The legal owners of the franchise dictate what is and isn't a part of the narrative's universe or not --- that goes for Star Wars and their decision to not include any works in the extended universe because they own the rights to it. End of Story.

    • @trashboat6670
      @trashboat6670 4 роки тому +5

      Quite the opposite. It's all my choice. I mean, how can someone impose the duo's novels canonicity on me if I haven't even read them? An author dies in the process of reading, all that matters is just a reader and their experience.

      @@trashboat6670you can head canon however you want that is your right as a fan. But factually by a legal standpoint the books written by Brian are canon you can ignore them which is your right. But they are canon. Now you can simply ignore them and pretend they aren't. And simply enjoy franks works and that's also completely valid. But it would be factually Incorrect to argue with someone who likes Brians works and say it's non canon. Fanfiction.........
