From the 2018 World Cup there is an additional tiebreaker before drawing of lots: Fair Play Conduct points ( -1pt for yellow card, -3pts for red via 2 yellows, -4pts for direct red card and -5pts for direct red card after getting a yellow earlier). In addition UEFA's EUROs now use their National Coefficient as a last tiebreaker before drawing lots.
Thanks for watching Michael. I saw that away goals and Fair Play points are used to break ties in qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but I can't find the official book for the actual World Cup for 2018. Where did you find this?
Page 43 of the updated FIFA World Cup 2018 Regulations (downloadable from www.fifa.com/worldcup/organisation/documents/ ). I believe this was not used in 2014 but was used by UEFA in EURO 2016. Also while Away Goals is normally referred to club competitions (Champions League and Europa League) it is also used in Qualifying stage for World Cups and EUROs (slightly different implementation in each).
Page 27 (above reference) for World Cup Qualifiers mentions Away Goals counting double in a 2 way tie as a 7th tiebreaker before Fair Play Conduct and finally lots
Nice, thanks for pulling the reference. (I couldn't find it) I have a memory of Fair Play being a later-on tie breaker (maybe in South Africa?) but it wasn't in Brazil. Well I'm glad FIFA listened to this video and changed the rules (and so quickly). This takes the chances of drawing lots from once in a generation to twice in a millennium.
@@nassimb7151 although very unlikely Looph has answered it below. in last world cup Japan got out of the group because less cards over an African country. red is three yellow is 1
They should play a match on fifa video game where they all control their own player so and of there is more than 2 then there should be a fifa league or tournament and if there is a tie in that then it's next goal wins until a team scores a goal.
Apart from the fairplay points that many have mentioned, some tournaments also play a penalty shootout if 2 teams are tied and they meet on the last matchday
2018 World Cup (as other people already commented), Fair Play rule is added, and UEFA used a Coefficient rule at the 2016 EUROs. Basically, a team which has higher coefficient (that means, a team which is on a higher spot in the rankings) advances and goes through.
Before the coin toss there's the Fairplay-rule. Per game any player could "earn" points for cards. These points would be subtracted from the team's points. Yellow card: 1 Point Yellow-red card (a second yellow): 3 points Red card: 4 points Yellow and a red card: 5 points (Every player could only fulfill one (or none) of the criteria)
For three-way tie, you could totally have a penalty shoot-out between three teams. Each team gets 10 shots, five against each opponent, and scores 2 points for each goal scores, and -1 for each goal conceded, with sudden death if necessary.
The UEFA Euro 2016 Tiebreaker list also includes fair play conduct and the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2016#Tiebreakers
+The Hoax I know could you imagine tieing all those levels then UEFA say, "well they have a higher rank so they go through" I think that's worse than a coin toss/drawing lots. Or if anything, after all those ties the worse ranked team should go forward since they tied a "better" team.
I think there’s some other tiebreakers they could add. They just added disciplinary points and some other ones could be shots or shots on goal or possession.
no bother as an Englishman (well Geordie) and a big fan of your work (although recent subscriber) I thought I would point it out to keep up your standards.
it was so long since your last video that your voice sounds different haha. you should do one of the conference cup since its this year or offside 101 a guide for americans like the european one you did haha.
Funny, I am maturing as I age. Yeah, Confed. Cup is a really cool tournament and I have an offside bit in the works as well. Stay tuned either next week or in like 3 years when my voice is even more matured! Thanks for watching.
You seem to forget that 3 pts for win are pretty recent decision. Throughout whole soccer history only 2 pts were given for win. In fact they have decided to increase them to 3 for two reasons: A) This would decrease fixed games as draw would be almost a loss (1/3 of a win is much worse than 1/2 of a win) and B) Teams will fight much more aggressively for a win, because of the same reason. So England did have 4 pts.
2:21 I don't understand how England has lost 2 games in this table when the other 3 teams have no wins between them? Also, how England has 4 points from 1 win and 2 losses or how Egypt has drawn 1, but no other team has a draw?
It's W - D - L (which is way more common in football) instead of W - L - D. They are just mislabeled. Also, in 1990 a win was worth 2 points instead of the current 3 (this change was made by FIFA in 1995), hence why England has 4 points from 1 win and 2 draws instead of 5.
@@tchujdenetza You are right. The 3 point for a win (first debuted in England in 1981) was indeed used in the 1994 World Cup, but was only "formally adopted" by FIFA in the following year, 1995, as I previously stated. Some other national leagues and associations made the change prior or after that as well. However, the 1990 World Cup depicted in the video still used the 2 points for a win system.
Anything would be better than a coin toss. How about most "non-penalty shot" goals scored as one tiebreaker (b/c some of these penalty shot goals are so cheap or controversial)? Another tiebreaker can also differentiate (albeit it'll be rare) goals scored (by yourself) vs "own goals" scored (deflected by the other team). Another one can be "first" goal scored. Yes, you can still have a tie at the end - and be forced to do a coin toss - but the idea is to create as many tiebreakers as possible to avoid the dreaded coin toss.
I mean, it’s a sport where games are routinely tied or decided by a difference of only 1 goal. So luck is the biggest determining factor in most games if similar skill level...
Actually what they should do is have shots on open goals while they are each in different cities and the shots would be taken from very far distances(from the other side of the pitch) until either of them miss.. So basically they would be competing while they aren't in the same place, that would actually be very fair And you would have it broadcasted live and they would each be in contact with each other and you would have a referee for each team making sure everything is done correctly
There has to be some tie breaker. Maybe they should get the captains to play a best of three rock-paper-scissors. I still find the away goal rule to be more egregious than this one.
Tony Harley. They also "qualified" with coin toss against BENFICA. I played against the celtic boys in the United States as a youngster and I have supported Celtic ever since. BENFICA is in my blood tho. FORÇA BENFICA and CELTIC
A good solution would be to award second place to the highest ranked nation. For example, if Spain and Portugal completely tied for 2nd, Spain would go forward since they have a higher FIFA rank.
+Tudor Costache thanks for watching Tudor. A one game playoff would be ideal; however, with the schedule at the World Cup there are only a few days between the end of the group stage and the next scheduled matches in the knockout round. Whatever team won a one game playoff would be too tired (2 days rest) to play well.
@@PenandPaper They could make it a shorter match, or even play with less players so they have more fresh players for the next match. Or they could just do a penalty shoot-out.
They should have a shootout at the site of the round of 32 game an hour before the game to determine who moves on. For one team the travel would be necessary anyways and I'm sure that a team would rather travel and not play a game in order to be in control of their own destiny than leave it up to chance.
Good thinking but the team that qualified would not know who they were playing and would not be able to choose thier players and tactics accordingly to who thwy were playing.
But what happens when it ends like this? Teams A, B , C and D A win B 1-0 C win D 1-0 B win C 1-0 D win A 1-0 A draw C 0-0 B draw D 0-0 A 4 points 0 goal difference B 4 points 0 goal difference C 4 points 0 goal difference D 4 points 0 goal difference
I think there must be no draw in football. Even, group stage must have extra time and penalty shootout. This will remove the confusion. Results will be there so any team with most will go.
