the Dutch system works different as well. the nr 18 relegates directly to the first division. the numbers 16 and 17 are paired with the four winners of the four different periods from the first division. (the winner of the conplete season replaces the nummer 18 of the top flight) those six teams (numbers 16 and 17 plus the four winners) are divided into two groups to determine who stays or become a team in the top division. it's actually less complex than it sounds.
One thing that was overlooked and a great fact is that in the English FA Cup you can have (and it does happen) small clubs with semi-professional players going up against the biggest teams in the country. So a pretty average guy working a full time regular job can play in the biggest stadiums with some of the best players in the world. This also happens regularly in world cups and European cups.
I as an american who has been watching soccer for about 18 years, can confirm that this is the best way to explain the sport...very well put together...good job
One thing i feel had to be mentioned but wasn't. If a club wins it's league, the cup and the champions league in one season it's called the treble. It is the single most greatest achievement known to club football. It has only been done 10 times in European football history. (Edit since this comment section has gone *dented forehead* I was referring to a continental treble. Meaning a club’s respective top flight league, most prestigious domestic cup (because some have more than one) and the champions league. Yes, many more clubs have won 3 or more trophies in a season, but not this specific combination which is what most people think about when they hear “treble”. If some random team wins a cup, preseason tournament, and even another cup, it’s not the treble that gets written into the history books and argued by generations as one of the all time great European teams).
No. Man utd have done it once. Liverpool im not sure about. Pls note: n England if a team win both domestic cups and the league it's not a treble. It's the league FA cup and the champions league. Only those 3 competitions cout towards the treble. Only barclona have done it twice by winning La Liga, COPA del Ray and the champions league.
Actually Germany is the only country with a different relegation system (the last 2 are relegating instantaneously while 3rd from the bottom play against 3rd of 2nd division)
I know a couple of leagues that uses that system it's not only bundesliga. But it could be the only league by the really best ones lige spain england italay and all those countries that use that method (sorry for bad english)
Im English (im a Liverpool fan), and i watched this just to see if you were a butthurt guy about us calling it football, turned out to be a great explanation, great video!
Most Americans don’t care that they call it Football in Europe and Soccer over here. Most non fans or people who complain that soccer is “un American” mainly bitch about it being boring and flopping. A lot of people here really need to give it a chance, I’ve been getting into it a lot over the past year and it’s way more exiting and fun than most give it credit for. Nobody here really cares about the naming difference other than “oh that’s a little confusing”
@@runethfc Leicester City in Europe. Their run to the league title got me into the beautiful game when I was in middle school and I loved watching Vardy play. I’m from New Mexico so I love NM United in terms of American teams, and at the MLS Level since there is no pro/rel I’m all in on Inter Miami
Thank you even though I’m American I’m very interested into getting into football and this really helped me understand how it worked. Especially since basketball is my first sport it was very confusing at first. Great vid
England came up with the name soccer before it was football. and england is in europe. so suck it. www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/06/the-origin-of-the-word-soccer/
Thank you for this vid. I'm an American Football fan but lately i've taken interest in European Football. i just admire the passion and loyalty of European football. It''s lacking in American sports
well done very simple to understand But as aways ,trolls are everywhere to diminish the job of a well intendded person! To all troll below just dont watch a subject you dont like ....Easy as that!!!!
I watched this video in 2013 after starting to watch european soccer in 2011/12. Been following closely ever since. Thank you for helping create a fan out of me guy who made this video
SUPER helpful video. As an American who played the sport for 10yrs, I'm trying to get into the fan side of things so understanding how European socc-- errr Footy-- works and what to look out for is helpful. Would love to see a video on what resources you can go to in order to become a fan (beIN, Fox Sports, iPhone Apps, how to pick a team to start rooting for while you learn how to be a fan, etc.)
Its actually both of them. Soccer was one of the first name of the sport, an abbreviation for Association Football back when it was invented at England.
If "soccer" is used to attract the target audience (USAmericans) to this video - fair enough. Well done btw ! Greetings from the home of the World Champions 2014 :o)
loved the video . there are some corrections to be made like some people have pointed out that not all leagues go from august to may and that there is also the europa league but given that this is a guide for american fans who don't know much about the subject i think it was a good way to start. well done. :)
We'll done . It sure explains how many games some top level futbol players can have over a year span . Not including national friendlies and World Cup qualifying and World Cup it self also . That means that some players can have a 1 month vacation on World Cup years and have very little rest time . Best athletes . High endurance technically skilled athletes .. Running around 4 miles a game . No timeouts . Commercial breaks .. Lol
Um... Norway and Swedens leagues (Eliteserien, and Allsvenskan) starts their leagues in February/March, and ends in Oktober/November, and some leagues has 3 league ties against each other, like the Danish league (Alka Superliga)
i really like this because it explains the important stuff in a simple way and aside from the joke about america at the beginning which i liked, you didnt insult americans about not knowing soccer, well done
I know it is not really important but Belgian first league does employ a play off system. The top 6 play each other twice after the regular season ends, the even half the point after the regular season. So you get 10 matches per team against the best teams of the season and you can definitely come back from behind to win the league because the point total is divided by 2. Very interesting for the casual fans and the fans of the top 6 teams (maybe not the first placed team bc they see their lead cut in half). We have been doing it for almost 10 years and it makes for some exciting games at the end of the year. I must admit that my team usually places in the top 6 and has won a championship bc of this system but still. even though it is very counter intuitive for a soccer fan I really enjoy the play offs.
Great video! Would love an update to explain that each section of the world has a similar system and how the FIFA Club World Cup ties into it all. Especially for the 2021 changes to that tournament.
Few corrections: First thing you need to know about is it's called football. 2. Not all European football's domestic leagues run from August to May. 3. Politically, some of all the countries in European football belong to Asia, Israel, Turkey, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Georgia. 4. The players in European football are the best from all over the world, because the most money is in Europe, think about that for a sec. South America produces some talent, and everywhere else does too, except, on a big scale places like India, China, Oceania, Canada, Indonesia, big places like that but everywhere else does. 5. About league relegation, in the English Championship on the last day the top two teams are promoted to the Premier League while the third place has a semi and then a final playoff among the 3rd to the 6th team in the league for that last spot to the Premier League. And that is just that league, and there are so so many everywhere, so who knows what other ways are being used too. 6.About the Cup, the F.A. Cup in England is something special, it's great to see lower league teams get to play the big stars of the Premier League, and win once in a while. I don't follow any other domestic Cups around Europe, there are just so many. 7. About the Champions League, there is also the Europa League which is the next best thing. By December, the 3rd placed team in each group of the Champions League is promoted to the Europa League to compete in 2 legged playoffs, one home one away. I wouldn't say that the Champions League Final is the most important match in the year when it is not a World Cup Final year. There is also the European Championships, and the people in Africa, South America and everywhere else also have their own little international championship to follow. The passion and pride of supporting your own nation can be all that matters. This is why the World Cup is bigger than the Champions League. Even though there is probably a lot more talent in the Champions League, every man thinks his own country best. 8. Last thing, the transfer window, begins at the very end of the season, and finishes up on the 31st of August, then opens once again for one month only the following January. If a player plays for one team in the Champions League from September to December, and then in January moves to another club in the Champions League, he cannot play for that new club in the Champions League when the playoff's start, this is called being cup-tied. 9. The heart of European football belongs to Germany, Italy, England, Spain, Portugal, Holland, France, Hungary, Czech Rep. it's in places like these that you will find the strongest football anywhere. In global terms, South America, particularly Brazil and Argentina also hold a piece of the heart of football in the world. Ranking of football's popularity on a wide scale by continent: 1. Europe and South America most popular 2. Latin America and Africa 3. Asia and Australia 4. North America and Oceania
+[Amit Bhalla], yes Messi could play for Barca and Man U in the same season...IF Barcelona transferred him to United during the Winter Transfer Window. While I am not sure if there is an explicit rule against a player playing for two clubs at the same time (I will look into it) it would be ridiculously impractical and I am sure that a player's contract with one club would stipulate that he not play for any other clubs at the same time due to injury worries etc. One further point, if Messi would undergo this transfer and he had played in the Group Stage of Champions League with Barcelona in the Fall, he would be "Cup Tied" to Barcelona for that season's Champions League, so he could go to United but he would be unable to play in their Champions League games, if they were in the Champions League, which they won't be this coming season.
+lucas “luquitas-2109” sobehart that's not really taken as seriously as the Champions League, it's a small tournament usually involving hopelessly mismatched teams.
+Pen and Paper Most clubs, if they were to sell or loan one of their top players, they wouldn't sell them to a team in the champions league. Ex. Arda Turan couldn't play for Barca until their ban was over but they were eligible to loan him out but refused to loan him to a champions league team.
In germany the team that finishes 16th in bundesliga plays the team that finishes 3rd in bundesliga 2 to decide who's going to play in top flight next season. But great video :)
too much hate for "soccer". - Soccer comes from the term Association Football, both Football and Soccer were terms used in the UK - It is an AMERICAN guide, so obviously he uses the term AMERICANs use
+kquals no it was not in the Bundesliga only the last two teams (17. and 18.) drop directly into 2. Division the third last team(16.) gets into a two religation matches vs the third best team in the 2. Division... home and away and the better team gets into the first division.
My reaction after watching this video, "Hey this sounds cool. Could be fun and interesting." My reaction after reading posts squabbling over soccer minutia, "Uh, never mind."
This is a great video but there are many exceptions to the norm people may be confused about, and also a few competitions that aren't explained so I've just clarified a few of the anomalies here. Some countries don't have their own league. Eg Vatican City, Monaco, Lichenstein Some leagues aren't from an actual recognised country eg Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Kosovo Some leagues that play in European competition (UEFA) aren't actually in Europe eg Israel, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan Not all seasons run from August to May. Some leagues run from Feb/Mar to Oct/Nov/Dec particularly in Northern Europe where they don't want to play in cold winter. Eg Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia. Also many countries take winter breaks in Dec/Jan where they are off for a month. In most leagues teams don't play each other twice. In many leagues its 3 or 4 times. In almost half of Europe, there is a split. So they play every team in the season 1/2/3 times, and then they split the league in 2 and they play each other once or twice, just the teams in there half of the league. Also what about if teams are tied on points? Tiebreakers like goal difference, head to head etc are used. Relegation is usually not so simple. There is different systems. Playoffs are often used for teams at the bottom of the top division and the top of the second division. Eg bottom of top division is relegated and top of second division is promoted. 2nd bottom enters playoff with 2nd, 3rd and 4th top to decide the other spot in the top league. Also relegation isn't always that terrible. 10 out of the 55 UEFA countries also organise a secondary cup (League Cup). This is not as important as the primary cup but is still important. The League Cup is usually played earlier in the season, some finals are played in September/December/March unlike the primary cup which the final is usually in May the last day of the season. The League Cup doesn't feature as many teams, for example may only involve teams from the top 3 or 4 divisions, unlike the primary cup which can feature hundreds of teams from lower down the pyramid. There's League Cups in all British Isles countries as well as France, Portugal, Iceland, Israel and Andorra. Finals are usually played at a neutral venue like the national stadium. Teams usually enter cups at different stages, so the bigger teams come in later and don't have to play as many games to reach the final. Whereas smaller teams have to navigate earlier rounds to get to the latter stages. Cup games can be played either over one or two legs. So they may be just one game at one stadium or are played home and away. This can alternate depending on the stage. Ie it may be 2 legged games until a one off final at a neutral venue. The Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) for example is all one legged, except for the semis which are played over 2 legs. Cups can also feature group stages similar to the world cup or Champions league. About half of the countries in Europe have a "Super Cup" played in summer before the league season starts or early next season. This is where the league champions play the Cup champions in a one off game. If the same team won the league and Cup then they will play the league runners up, the cup runners up, the game will not be played or the trophy will be automatically awarded to the team that won both league and cup. There is different formats like in Spain they have 4 teams in the super cup, featuring first and second in the league and the 2 cup finalists. This is played with 2 semis and a final. In a 2 legged European tie (Champions league/Europa League game) games are played one at home, one away. Scores over both legs are added up to see who wins. If they have both scored the same total number of goals, then the team that scored more goals away from home goes through. Eg 1st leg: Ajax 3-2 Celtic 2nd leg: Celtic 1-0 Ajax Total : Ajax 3-3 Celtic Celtic scored 2 away goals whereas Ajax scored 0 away from home, so Celtic go through. If the score is the same in both matches then extra time and penalties are used as normal. The Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup are also not, explained. The Europa League is the secondary European competition featuring the next best ranked league teams not playing in the Champions League as well as domestic cup winners. The UEFA Super Cup is where the Europa League winners play the Champions League winners in a one off game at a neutral venue. Remember the Champions League only determines the European Champion. There is also an Asian Champions League, a North American Champions League etc. The winners of all these 6 continental tournaments qualify for the Club World Cup. The Club World Cup is where each continent's club champion plays in a tournament to determine the Club World Champion.
+This is My Name for exampe, here in Greece at the end of the season the 2, 3, 4 and 5th clubs play at the playoffs, and the 1 goes to the CL. However, nordic countries differences are still more important I have to admit.
+Carlos Aguiar Leahue cup is not in every country but he should have mentioned the europa league which for anyone who do not know is like the champions league but for worse teams
+jjhhaarrddyy League Cup is a second cup tournament in England besides the "normal" cup tournament, which is called the FA cup. Basically they just have two cup tournaments instead of just one. As far as I know, England is the only country with two cup tournaments, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
You forgot 1 thing when teams advance to the quarter final there will be a draw to determine their next opponent so you get teams at random meaning the 2 best teams that are expected to face off in the final can face each other in the quarterfinals like Paris and Bayern Munich in this 2020-21 season
A tie isnt called a tie, it's called a draw, and if Cup final games like the F.A. Cup Final goes into 2 15 minute halves called extra time. After that the game is decided on penalty kicks. the rest it's corrected by Sean, ps STOP CALLING IT FUCKING SOCCER.
In the Bundesliga the 2 teams with least amount of points(17th,18th) get relegated straight away, and the two best from 2.Bundesliga get the promotion. There is only a relegation match between 16th in Bundesliga and 3rd in 2.Bundesliga
You forgot to say that in the german league (and a few other leagues as well) the third worst team in the first division team plays the third best team in the second division. The match is decided over two matches(legs) and if the second division team wins then they get promoted and the first division team gets relegated and if the first division team wins then they stay in the first division and the second division team stays in the second division.
There are playoff's but not in the top division's, the top 2 teams get automatic promotion but to fight for the other spot 3,4,5,6 have a playoff to get the other spot
Nice video, but you forget the another part of history and glory of fútbol. Here in South America is the Meca of the greatest football players of all history. Pele, Maradona, Messi and so many others players like these, historic teams and prestigious leagues are made the present of european fútbol.
David, you are right. Some great players have come from South America. I tried to really keep only the most basic info. in this video (and to somehow keep it under 4 minutes). I am thinking of making an additional video about European Club Soccer discussing some of the finer points. (Europa league, leagues with exceptions to the rules listed here, etc.) Maybe a shout out to CONMEBOL
There's a lot of things that you didn't explain 1. The 2 spots below the champions league spots play in a separate European league called the Europea league. 2. In English football there are playoffs consisting of the team between 3rd-6th who play in 2 legs 1 at home 1 away. The score in the 2 games are combined and the team with the highest score will play at the stadium were the national team plays called Wembley. The winner of this get to go into the higher division. So the top 2 teams get promotion and the winner of the playoffs get promotion too. 3. The winner of the Europea League and champions league play in a final for the super cup. 4. In English football the winner of the cup and the league play at Wembley for the community shield which is basically just a over glorified friendly. 5. The cup final is at Wembley and the winner of the cup gets to play in the Europea league if they haven't qualified for the champions league. 6. The top 4 teams in the leagues qualify for the champions league.
*Murica needs to understand there's a HUGE semantic/symbolic difference between..* *FOOTBALL* = the actual name of the sport (Association Football, codified back in 1863, 57 years prior to the founding of NFL & 104 years before the first Super Bowl) + tradition, passion, religion, way of life, quality. By far thee greatest & most popular game ever created. And it's played with the actual *foot* & *ball* (unlike some pseudo-Rugby shit aka Handegg) *SOCCER (SUCKER)* = outdated/annoying af slang term + kinda shitty version of Football (for suckers/losers who just suck ass at the Beautiful Game)
Warbrain 777 Can it be more boring than watching 11 actually minutes of gameplay, while the rest is fucking commercials? The average football game in Europe IS WAY more exciting than an NFL(Handegg) match.
That'd be going into a bit too much details for the ESSENTIAL. You could also talk about some countries having special cups, league cups, supercups and all that jazz, but that would be getting really confusing for basic steps.
not every european leauge has it season starting in august. Sweden for example has it season started in march/april and ends in november due to the cold wheater. i think other nordic leagues are the same
Its what its called in America, its ingrained in our culture and psyche. Football, you wear a helmet and pads, and you tackle mother fuckers with hatred. But other guys also throw and pass off the ball, others run their ass off, other push people around and block defenders. Some kick or punt the ball to the other team or through some poles for points. There is only 3 or 4 plays that have involvement with the foot, most of the sport does not. I admit, it should be called tackle ball or something. I like calling the internationally loves sport football or futbol instead of soccer, but often make the mistake and call it soccer just out of cultural reflex or something. Almost like saying Jesus Christ or God Dammit as a curse or reaction to something, why do I and people do that, I have no idea, it comes out naturally for some reason. I am not even religious. Soccer is the same thing. Our league is called MLS Major League Soccer, and it is getting a lot more popular and fan bases are growing a lot with chants scarves and everything. When I root I root for the Timbers, Portland Timbers is my team. Or I am a supporter (is that how you say it?) So how you be more inclusive and let us Americans in on the soccer (im sorry football), we love it and who cares what we call it.
Good video. The only things missing to make it perfect: 1) you briefly mentioned Europe's version of "NIT" (I presume Europa), but didn't elaborate; 2) an explanation of tiebreakers beyond league play (where you did mention 1pt each), esp in knockout rounds; most Americans would get confused unless aggregates are explained, or perplexed how you can resolve 1 game played at home and 1 away (American sports have an odd number of games to break ties); 3) a further explanation of league Cups (e.g. in England, FA Cup vs Carabao Cup); 4) an explanation of transfer (when is the deadline; transfer fees explained; what is "lending" a player).

Just for the record, the name soccer originates from England itself. As an abbreviation of Association football, which is the original name of the sport. Although to me it is the one and only real football.
There are playoffs in England, for promotion to the next league. The top two spots are automatic, the last space for promotions played off between 3 and 4 as I recall.
+04nbod 4 teams enter the promotion play-offs, those who finished 3-6 in the table. They are paired off and play two legs with the winners meeting in the play-off final. (The single most lucrative sporting event on the planet for the winners.)
+Slingy FC you're such a little bitch, why do you give in to these people. Technically they are both called football. It just so happens that people in different counties simplify it and refer to football to whichever of the two is most popular. In the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand association football isn't the primary sport and so we call it soccer. If that hurts their Latin American/European pathetic inferiority complex enduced ego that's THEIR PROBLEM..... You never give in when someone screams at your face and demands that you call something according to THEIR WHIM, unless you're a little bitch desperately craving their acceptance....
There is also a supercup of each league, the league winners and the cup winners face off for it. Although it's mostly irrelevant and is seen as pre-season work.
how big NFL??? only in America..(yes we play rugby) how big NBA..it big only in America...(what we play basketball too)..how big Football..welcome to the Earth...football is not that American eggball...
swing Dra Yeah NFL is only known in U.S sure but NBA or Basketball period is known all around the world it may not be as famous as Soccer/Football/Fútbol but it's still known around the world like Soccer/Football/Fútbol
Basketball is quite big in Eastern Europe too. You're right about American football though, nobody cares about it outside Murica & rightly so because it's utterly shit.
Also for rule 3, certain countries have more then one cup, take England's football league - you have *EPL; the top flight of England, the you have the FA Cup (Football association challenge cup) then you have the EFL (English football league) and if your team in the top flight of your country finish in 4th - 8th they go through to Europa league a big competition not as big as the UCL
Nice reaction brother and I recommend to watch this video to understand how the system works in Europe: Understanding European football in four simple steps
I'm a fan and watched out of curiousity, this is well explained. International vs club could be in there, that confuses many people (And transfers) but it's still a good video. Oh, and everyone that could only say "football not soccer".... that's not a trump card phrase, it's still a good video and you're not changing anything by repeating yourselves like sheep.
Bunch of kids complaining about the word soccer, grow up, this video is intended for Americans and Americans call it soccer because we already have a sport called football.
Uefa Champions League is the most important club tournament in the world At the moment. In history the Libertadores used to be more prestigious and the club's world cup or "intercontinental cup" was probably the most prestigious club tournament for the most time in history.
why am i watching this? i know everything already.
same istg
same
Just making sure he was saying correctly
Same
Same I don't know why but I'm watching it😂
You picked the one league in European football that has irregular relegation system
I know lol
the Dutch system works different as well. the nr 18 relegates directly to the first division. the numbers 16 and 17 are paired with the four winners of the four different periods from the first division. (the winner of the conplete season replaces the nummer 18 of the top flight) those six teams (numbers 16 and 17 plus the four winners) are divided into two groups to determine who stays or become a team in the top division.
it's actually less complex than it sounds.
no he just didn't explain it right. the 3rd of the 2. Bundesliga plays the 16th of the 1. Bundesliga in two games to decide if they go up/down or not.
Cristiano Ronaldo KFC lover
Cristiano Messi the Irish league has a irregular relegation system
This is unbelievably understandable!
I'm a European who doesn't follow football. Now I can finally follow along.
Also in Europe when you get your driver's license, they give you a trophy, a parade, and the season is over.
Divers licence more like ;)
One thing that was overlooked and a great fact is that in the English FA Cup you can have (and it does happen) small clubs with semi-professional players going up against the biggest teams in the country. So a pretty average guy working a full time regular job can play in the biggest stadiums with some of the best players in the world. This also happens regularly in world cups and European cups.
1:47 Does mention this
I as an american who has been watching soccer for about 18 years, can confirm that this is the best way to explain the sport...very well put together...good job
Ahead of the trend! Awesome, Thanks for watching Nick.
One thing i feel had to be mentioned but wasn't. If a club wins it's league, the cup and the champions league in one season it's called the treble. It is the single most greatest achievement known to club football. It has only been done 10 times in European football history.
+Crushinator192837465 And Barcelona are the only ones to have done it Twice :)
+Spyros Depountis that's not true Liverpool have won it twice too
+Spyros Depountis man utd have done it twice also
+Fabio Oma Liverpool have never won a treble.
Actually Germany is the only country with a different relegation system (the last 2 are relegating instantaneously while 3rd from the bottom play against 3rd of 2nd division)
+El Barto Germany isn't the only country that has this system. The Swedish league also uses the exact same method
+Carl Oscar Källström didn't know that
I know a couple of leagues that uses that system it's not only bundesliga. But it could be the only league by the really best ones lige spain england italay and all those countries that use that method (sorry for bad english)
Ehm, in Italy is like in the Bundesliga
Should be playing first of the second division....

In Europe, we have football, not soccer.

SUPER helpful video. IT IS FOOTBALL. YOUR SPORT IS EGGBALL
HAHHAHAHAHAH EGGBALL !
NO!!! IT'S CALLED "HANDEGG"
Its actually both of them. Soccer was one of the first name of the sport, an abbreviation for Association Football back when it was invented at England.

If "soccer" is used to attract the target audience (USAmericans) to this video - fair enough. Well done btw !

loved the video . there are some corrections to be made like some people have pointed out that not all leagues go from august to may and that there is also the europa league but given that this is a guide for american fans who don't know much about the subject i think it was a good way to start. well done.
Lol
This is a nice Video for beginners. As usual, after 2,5 years the discussion is totally off topic.

i really like this because it explains the important stuff in a simple way and aside from the joke about america at the beginning which i liked, you didnt insult americans about not knowing soccer, well done
Wow. We have a split in Scotland but the points tally isn't halved.
Thank you this really helped me understand how soccer works

i was just checking whether u explained correctly... well done
Few corrections:
First thing you need to know about is it's called football.
Ranking of football's popularity on a wide scale by continent:
1. Europe and South America most popular
2. Latin America and Africa
3. Asia and Australia
4. North America and Oceania

Why do primeir league teams play 38 games instead of 40
there is a playoff in german relegation.
Pen and Paper Thanks for the video, now i just need a team.
Pen and Paper He would be cup tide to FCB for all uefa's competitions meaning he wouldn't be able to help Man utd in the uefa league either
+lucas “luquitas-2109” sobehart It's not as big as the biggest clubs are from Europe which is also why the club world cup doesn't pay as well
In germany the team that finishes 16th in bundesliga plays the team that finishes 3rd in bundesliga 2 to decide who's going to play in top flight next season. But great video :)

Very well explained. Everything was accurate and concise.
Eg Vatican City, Monaco, Lichenstein
Some leagues aren't from an actual recognised country eg Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Kosovo
Some leagues that play in European competition (UEFA) aren't actually in Europe eg Israel, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan
Not all seasons run from August to May.
Eg 1st leg: Ajax 3-2 Celtic
2nd leg: Celtic 1-0 Ajax
Total : Ajax 3-3 Celtic
Celtic scored 2 away goals whereas Ajax scored 0 away from home, so Celtic go through.

+Carlos Aguiar Too much information for an American brain to handle.
+jjhhaarrddyy No he didn't, he talked about the league and the cup, not the league cup
+jjhhaarrddyy League Cup is a second cup tournament in England besides the "normal" cup tournament, which is called the FA cup. Basically they just have two cup tournaments instead of just one. As far as I know, England is the only country with two cup tournaments, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

In the Bundesliga the 2 teams with least amount of points(17th,18th) get relegated straight away, and the two best from 2.Bundesliga get the promotion.
There is only a relegation match between 16th in Bundesliga and 3rd in 2.Bundesliga
World Football. Association Football.

There's a lot of things that you didn't explain
Have some respect, at he was trying to teach the basics

*Murica needs to understand there's a HUGE semantic/symbolic difference between..*
*FOOTBALL* = the actual name of the sport (Association Football, codified back in 1863, 57 years prior to the founding of NFL & 104 years before the first Super Bowl) + tradition, passion, religion, way of life, quality. By far thee greatest & most popular game ever created. And it's played with the actual *foot* & *ball* (unlike some pseudo-Rugby shit aka Handegg)
*SOCCER (SUCKER)* = outdated/annoying af slang term + kinda shitty version of Football (for suckers/losers who just suck ass at the Beautiful Game)
Warbrain 777 Can it be more boring than watching 11 actually minutes of gameplay, while the rest is fucking commercials? The average football game in Europe IS WAY more exciting than an NFL(Handegg) match.
Soccer's not a slang term, it's a shortening of As*SOC*iation Football... and England was the one who came up with it.
Its not soccer, its football. The greatest sports on earth. Only the Americans call it that clueless name
You missed European league :)
That'd be going into a bit too much details for the ESSENTIAL. You could also talk about some countries having special cups, league cups, supercups and all that jazz, but that would be getting really confusing for basic steps.
thank you - this cleared up a lot for me
step 1: Call it football. We use our feet here.
not every european leauge has it season starting in august. Sweden for example has it season started in march/april and ends in november due to the cold wheater. i think other nordic leagues are the same
It is called football, not soccer!
This is made so A ericans can understand
For Americans....have been not paying attention
This is a great video but there are many exceptions to the norm people may be confused about, and also a few competitions that aren't explained so I've just clarified a few of the anomalies here.

Eg 1st leg: Ajax 3-2 Celtic
2nd leg: Celtic 1-0 Ajax
Total : Ajax 3-3 Celtic
Celtic scored 2 away goals whereas Ajax scored 0 away from home, so Celtic go through.
The Club World Cup is where each continent's club champion plays in a tournament to determine the Club World Champion.
.....and dont ever say the word soccer in europe
Might become an FC Porsche or OMG 1899 fan, I've heard they're good teams
number five is the most important rule: call it football, not soccer
Just for the record, the name soccer originates from England itself. As an abbreviation of Association football, which is the original name of the sport. Although to me it is the one and only real football.
i know that, but still, just becuz it originated from England, doesn't mean it's a lame name for the sport
Thank you for this video. This was very helpful for beginners. You gave me essential info in order to trade football club tokens 😊
Shit why would you put "European Soccer" in the title. If you want to call it soccer go ahead but, please at least call it "European Football"
(The single most lucrative sporting event on the planet for the winners.)
first step : its called football not soccer
it's for the american audience, but yeah it's football :)
+Slingy FC
you're such a little bitch, why do you give in to these people.
In North American guy 👍
1. Soccer / Association Football 3.5 Billion
Basketball is quite big in Eastern Europe too.
You're right about American football though, nobody cares about it outside Murica & rightly so because it's utterly shit.
" & rightly so because it's utterly shit."..100% right and made me laugh out loud :)
This is a great introduction.
Also for rule 3, certain countries have more then one cup, take England's football league - you have *EPL; the top flight of England, the you have the FA Cup (Football association challenge cup) then you have the EFL (English football league) and if your team in the top flight of your country finish in 4th - 8th they go through to Europa league a big competition not as big as the UCL
this video is really awesome and easy to understand
Thanks! You were part of being me hooked.
Nice reaction brother and I recommend to watch this video to understand how the system works in Europe:
Understanding European football in four simple steps
Damn good video. I played soccer in D3 college, and still never got all this straight cause i never saw it on TV until the last two years!
Helped a lot
Bunch of kids complaining about the word soccer, grow up, this video is intended for Americans and Americans call it soccer because we already have a sport called football.
A decent summary - good job.

My word, this was incredibly helpful. Now dad can explain to my soccer (football:) crazed kids in the US...
uefa Champions league final is the most important game in the year unless its the world cup? what about the euro cup or copa america?
Uefa Champions League is the most important club tournament in the world At the moment. In history the Libertadores used to be more prestigious and the club's world cup or "intercontinental cup" was probably the most prestigious club tournament for the most time in history.
Does any body knows the name of the background music?
