¡Salud, oh Constructores, oh Formadores! Vosotros véis. Vosotros escucháis. ¡Vosotros!
I miss the days as a teenager where i could naively enjoy Lovecraft. I love everything here, from the mumbo jumbo mystical lyrics that recall Sun Ra to the splendid and boundless orchestration with such beautiful sounds. Une merveille !
@matthew bowie: Electronic organs already existed, especially since the Ondes revision is from 1961. If Varese had wanted one, he would have called for one. The point of the pipe organ is the contrast between the acoustic instrument and the electronic Ondes. So, using an electronic organ does NOT fulfill the "intent of the score".
Agreed, and it's totally lame. I'm surprised a renowned and universally respected ensemble such as this would think this was an ok substitution. There is no shortage of suitable organs in France!
A real concert organ *can* be better than an electronic, but you assume that the aesthetic intent here is demeaned by "imitation," rather than enhanced by the clearly synthetic impetus of the piece. I would argue that the electronic organ is not an imitation of anything; it fulfills the intent of the score.
Intent aside, a real pipe organ sounds way better. This was of course done for practical purposes as there's no organ in the hall. But, I say move the concert to a space with an organ, it makes a huge difference. Yes, I'm an organist.
A good rendition, but a real concert organ is always better than an electronic imitation, and I prefer the bass solo version (more precise articulation). Interesting to see an Ondéa (digital recreation of the Ondes) alongside an original Ondes Martenot...
Brilliant performance! Abominable camera work!
Every day I listen to a performance by the Ensemble. Keeps me whole, mind body & soul. Thank you for the brilliance.
Same here, Maestro.
Merci
Very cool music in a world of trite music.
