The closest rally simulator to the real driving experience with Ngp physics. It deserves more attention from rally lovers, even e-sports competition. If the graphics can be updated by professional programmers, it will probably attract more attention.
Facts. As a guy who does some rallying it pains me how Dirt Rally 2 is considered a realistic game when its physics engine couldn't be more distant to the real thing, while RBR nailed it.
there are some tracks that are made well and some filters to make them look even better but the game itself has limitations as to what can be done... the entire game would have to be made from scratch and i dont think it will happen, developers want to make a quick buck by focusing on it looking all pretty and give the general gamer a false sense of mastering something instead of a real challenge.
The graphics engine can be replaced (in future), but you will still need team of professional artists capable of creating AAA content - the lack of skilled creators is the main limitation even with the current engine. It is the same reason why Assetto Corsa has only very few nicely made rally stages, despite it's way more advanced graphics capabilites. Making a reality based rally stage isn't just about scattering Megascan assets all over the map (not even mentioned re-modeling all those cars ...). The good thing is that even with this old engine you can make quite realistic visuals, which hopefully will be demonstrated soon ... Also I don't think RBR needs to attract those who find graphics as deciding factor - those wouldn't like this game anyway. ua-cam.com/video/kRLYcGwFOTs/v-deo.html
The game is so good, you could pass it as actual training for a rally. Had Richard Burns lived, we might have seen a Richard Burns 2 where the physics evolve into something never created before.
One of the best games I've ever played mostly because it didn't feel like a game. It had an extremely punishing learning curve and required insane discipline to master. I also remember the road had a very 3D, palpable quality to it.
After a couple thousand hours of DR2 I decided to get back into RBR and, as someone who is poor and can't afford a sim rig, rocking an xbox elite series 2 with kontrolfreek rings - it isn't so harsh once you finally manage to get the inputs mapped properly (still working on the steering filters though) :D
Got the game back in 2006 or something. I actually have a physical copy of it. I have played the game (not every day obviously) since. If you play and enjoy a game for over 15 years, you have to consider it a masterpiece. It is one of few games I consider a masterpiece, I will never get bored of this game, it's just too much fun.
RBR is definitely the best driving title ever. I nearly pulled all my hair out, learning how to arrive at the end of the course. The first time that you got to the end of a stage felt like a real sense of accomplishment. MAGIC! RIP Richard, you are missed.
After few years and many hours playing Dirt Rally I'm decided to get back to old roots and install RBR. At the first moment I was on track and start driving, my first thought was - Burns is definitely better than Dirt!! The handling, car physics, the feeling of the car, you can actually feel the car weight when you are driving in high speed and corners, there is no such thing at Dirt rally games.
i wish newer games did not fear that new players get off games due to being too real. i just want a new rally game that feels exactly like irl would feel like.
Dude... your enthusiasm as you are replaying this game.. or more-so reliving your childhood is infectious. I too was reliving mine and I can't wait to download this game and set it up. Thanks for this awesome video.. and memory!
2 of my all time rally heroes and VERY VERY lucky to have seen them both in the flesh so to say! CMR was always my fave (Scottish) but always loved how Richard chipped away and was very methodical and precise as to how he went about things. The games match the very much loved personalitys of both guys.
First memory of RBR: Rally School Stage, you should do it at 40 kph, no more, no less, and you cannot go off the track. I was 12-13, I speak no english at all, I won't even try to read the instructions :D Of course i go flat out, and failing... After 15-20 try, i nailed it, and the game said I'm failed again... WTF man, it was the perfect run, even my father watched it form behind, and he said that was proper job. After that, I read the instructions, and my young brain can understand the 40 number, I tried at 40 kph, and it was the way... Man, this memory is one of my core memories about computers and simracing :D
Great memories, I was bit older and literally bought PS2 for RBR, could not afford PC to run it properly. Not sure if links to other videos are acceptable here, little bit of nostalgia ("creating content" was a thing back in the day :-) ua-cam.com/video/nR9wef8kyfM/v-deo.htmlsi=c4wL-xsREIt4hMVV
Nascar Racing 2003 Season, Sierra just had taken over papyrus back then.. (crazy fun fact, although i don't know if this is still true, but iRacing is/was essentially NR2003.)
Oh man. When RBR was released I was literally almost 20 years old. Had left racing back in the days and was on the shooter train but tried it several times because I was a big rally fan and CMR was for me one of the first "sims"
I own WRC and Dirt 2, immediatly the first thing I take from this is the contour of the roads... The roads are completely flat in Dirt and WRC and you never feel like you are about roll off one side or the other, its always full traction biting down on perfectly leveled road.
coming from dr2 i think the opposite. in dr2 you can really feel the suspension and weight transfer putting in the work, digging into the gravel, wheras in rbr it feels like the traction is mainly from just the tyres on flat road sliding a bit, not really digging in
I was 7 years old when the game was released. My parents bought it for me thinking it would be a cool car game for me to play. I couldn't even finish the training stages lol. Had no idea it was a simulation. You can imagine the frustration.
I had a similar story with GTR 2. I was pretty young, I loved racing games and saw it on in the store. It looked fun, when I bought it the guy in the store looked at me with a strange face lol, little did I know I was buying a pure simulator. I still had fun with the game just messing around and crashing into other cars. The game eventually become one of my favorite simracing games as I got older, I had no idea I bought such a great game at the time. Funny how it works sometimes.
I was 15 when the game was released. I was spending my whole time playing this game on keyboard and it was okay. Arcade-ish Colin McRae Rally has been the only competitor to RBR back then. Today we have several rally sims, even the official one by WRC themselves, but 18 years from then, Richard Burns Rally is still unmatched. Had Richard been alive, imagine how crazily realistic the next RBR could be with modern technology and graphical engines like Unreal 5, for instance!
Richard Burns was one who died way before he should of along with Colin McRae but yes this game is awesome and should seriously be re mastered for the latest Gen Gaming Consoles and Jardier you do it so well bro
Yes had it back in the day . I even tested some of the first mods when modders were still struggling to change the code. This game is so unforgiving with its damage model, very ground breaking and never really bettered in that respect. I am now almost 58 and I am amazed how this old sim is still alive even against the current new official WRC game.
I still have the original CD in the box from the actual day it was released in 2003, still in pristine condition as it's still gold to me ;) you never get old of this sim if you're a real rally sim nut... RBR still unconquered to this day in terms of driver/car physics... superbly nailed sim, you have to take into consideration that graphics was still in it's early stages yet despite this it still holds its own... for me, this is the best rally sim of all time... the mod scene does indeed keep this alive and it's a huge credit to all involved, top job!!!
I made custom stages and pacenotes until I ran into a pacenote bug and the modder didn't have the code anymore to fix it Still the best force feedback I've ever experienced, it's so accurate that you can feel setup changes, even subtle ones.
I just got into looking for some Rally games & sims and this one got my attention by how smooth and realistic it is, didn't knew it had such a big community and love to it.
Still remember back in 2006/2007 when me and a cousin of mine found out a friend of his had a (then) spanking brand new, expensive, top of the line Logitech G25. We made the guy bring it to my cousin's home and promptly started RBR. Was a great 2-3 hour gaming session.
Love the red and green activation lights on your pedals for the pedal cam! That's actually really cool. Have to get a blue one for when the clutch comes in 😅 yellow for your handbrake and it'll be just like AC! If I could find a simple folder download with the new RBR Pro with the mods id play this every single day I just haven't been able to grasp setting it all up as I'm only new to pc gaming as of the last year or so. Modding is coming slowly but surely, so hopefully I can enjoy this gem soon! Great driving and LOVE the positive attitude as always Jardier it seriously lifts my mood as well.
I got RBR in 2004. That time I was driving LADA (that squared terrible one you had on 5:07, just a station wagon). Next winter I got Daewoo Nexia (facelifted Opel Kadett). The difference was scary as when you start to skid on the snow or ice driving a rear-drive car, you only need to slightly release the accelerator and the car stabilizes while getting slower. But Nexia was for me the first front-drive car to drive in the wintertime, and the fact that I will have to increase the speed to stabilize the car was quite terrifying - it is counterintuitive to accelerate when you are already losing control while cornering 😰. I was practicing in RBR before trying the trick in real life. To my surprise, the experience was so close, that soon I was spending some time (after returning from work) trowing my Nexia in controlled skids on packed snow at a lonely end of an avenue (close to my home) having lots of fun. Still enjoying RBR almost daily. DIrt 2.0 is in my collection, but it sucks. I tried all the latest WRC, but they are not SIMs too - returned back to Steam for a full refund. I playing it now on my RTX3080 using 4K 65" TV or 43" monitor. It is still stunning, hence often lacking HQ textures. Also, for now, I use PS5 Dualsense set with PS4Windows (Gyro for steering and split analog triggers for Acc/Brake). I am longing for the feedback I had when had Logitech G25. Looking forward to buying the latest Logitech Pro Racing or comparable DD models from its competitors. Thanks for reviewing!
Nice video Jardier!! 😁 This is probably the best Rally simulation of ever!! 🤘 I played RBR too with keyboard, but it was really impossible to handle that cars... I think to have played it a couple of years after its release. Some years ago, maybe 2016-2017, when I bought my first steering and pedal to play Raceroom, I tried to reinstall the game, but the FFB didn't work in RBR, so I unistalled it. Maybe I should try again... 🤔 I think there's a lot of active communuty also in Italy, with mods, cars, Italian Special stages and official professional co-drivers voices.
Love it thanks for taking me back,It is my personal favourite all-time rally game,im sure it was actually pretty hard to find, dont think there was many copies made,it wasnt mainstream/arcade as colin mcrea seemed more for the purist which is exactly what i loved about it, no one i knew liked to play it because it was to hard for them,I'd love to play it again
I was a kid playing Colin McCree rally when it was new on 56k dial up modem. That was my first taste of what gaming online could be in the future. It was incredible for the day!
That looks Fun wish I could play it but I can't :( Thanks for the video Jardier, I enjoyed watching. Wish I would have held up as good in the last 16 years as that game
I guess we are around the same age! Spent so many nights trading seats in front of my computer with my best m8 in highschool just trying so so hard to complete a stage properly with keyboard controls. It probably sounds ridiculous to some, but it was incredibly immersive. I'm literally sat in my sim-rig now, in the year 2024, leaving this comment because RBR unlocked something in me that has turned into a lifelong obsession with driving.
This is hilarious! I just found an old videocap of me driving that Driving School special stage from my hard drive, and now this pops up on to my video feed :-D Perhaps should download the RBR again! It was a bloody good rally game. The first driving game where driving with full throttle wasn't enough!
I bought the game for PlayStation 2 in 2005, at the time I didn't have a steering wheel and I remember well how frustrating it was to play it with a joypad, accustomed to titles like WRC and Colin McRae. I was tempted to throw it out the window, but in the end I gave up and left it on the shelf. Three years later I bought my first racing wheel, and while searching online for a realistic simulator I came to know about the huge community dedicated to RBR modding. From that moment I started racing on Italian mods, Real Rally first and RBR-World after, and I raced in a team for more than ten years. I appreciated new games like Dirt rally, WRC Generations and the new EA Sports WRC, excellent games that try to give a more simulative approach to rally gaming, but I think that today RBR still remains the most HARDCORE rally sim. The proof? Launch the new EA WRC, do a special stage that you've never done, and you'll realize that with a minimum of attention you will be able to bring the car to the finish line. Now do the same thing with RBR...good luck 😏
I was throwing out some old cd's and came across the installation disc and my modded version, installed both on Windows 11 and couldn't believe it still worked, have been playing like 4 hours now and still loving it, although I am 10 second off any record I set way back then. Loved your video, this truly is one game I will never throw out.
Played this game when it came out on a Logitech MOMO Force Feedback Wheel and Peddals. I fell in love. Not so sure why it still feels more connected to the road than new rally games but it seems to to me.
An man what a game I wish I could play it. After this it made me think that you could do a public league on Dirt Rally and we could all compete against eachother. Great video as always
This game is not popular because of the mods or nostalgia, but because of the PHYSICS. And because of PHYSICS it is getting all those mods. Until now no rally game managed to do that. And i am dead serious about my statement, also the ones following. Probably best physics in any of the Rally Games until this date and i firmly believe that Richard Burns was directly involved in making of this game. Only a real-life driver can suggest such and such changes to get the true driving experience as humanly close as it can get for a video game. Developers hit the the sweet spot on real life-to game parameters indeed! When you play on tarmac lets say (FRENCH stages :-) ) , you literally feel how the car is jerking from left to right, eating up the road because of the excessive power of the 4WD rally car. You can literally feel the body of the car bending because of excessive power that all rally car posses. And that why this game is a MASTERPIECE and is getting updated over and over. Because of physics, not because of nostalgia :-) Same story with GRAND PRIX LEGENDS formula 1 racing game. Game is from 1997 or 1998 but developers got the physics on the spot! Really a hard game to master, GOAT of the F1 games. So it would be real shame to let this gem to be forgotten only because of graphics. To mantion one more - same with the best MOTORCYCLE racing game ever made - TOURIST TROPHY !! You can literally feel when the rear tire is about to slip from under beneath you. Or when going over patched tarmac - if not careful changing lanes in unvorentarelly and aggressive manner is obligatory, same as when you ride a bike in real life. Those patches on tarmac will kill you :-) So regardless of how much money you put in the looks of the game, marketing, etc. , if the PHYSICS are not done properly, than you did nothing. You made just another ARCADE style game, nothing more. But who needs that! 99.98% of all of the racing games which are out there are already ARCADES. From DIRTY, MotoGP racing, Grand Turismo, MONZA, Need For Speed, etc. etc. Not many games in the history of computer games can offer you what those 3 games i mentioned are offering to a player. True driving experience all the way! Cheers from Slovenia!
6:52 all this tree environment brings me nostalgic feelings from an old nokia java game called Rally 3D (it was built in with the Nokia 5130 Xpress Music) i used to play when i was 10~12 c":
Been playing this game for a while now. Since I don't have a steering wheel, I've been playing it with a keyboard (kinda wrong to play this with keys, but I wish I have a Thrustmaster or Logitech setup). It's actually a great game, with those mods and NGP physics, it's a good thing I picked this over other rally games at the time.
So cool nostalgia kick!! Thank you @Jardier! ----- Can you please do aanother oldschool kick video about GT Legends??? :) I would really love that - probably more peeps would say the same :) - if you can do it then i will defenately feel like pensioner :D
I played RBR a lot around 2014-2015 but haven't played it since. I loved Dirt Rally 1 and 2 but I feel I need to revisit RBR again. The modding has only improved!
Some modded stages of RBR even look better (in the sense of more natural) compared to modern titles. I must admit, although I've played every newer rally game, this one - RBR - is still the best. The sheer amount of stages is endless meanwhile, WorkerBee's Physics Plugin still get updated continuously, you even have a driving school in RBR. It's so charming and immersive. The only caveat: maybe not the best title for single-players.... .
When this game released demo. I was at highschool. No stress. Running after girls Times were so much more simpler!
Am I blind or there is no link?

Love it thanks for taking me back,It is my personal favourite all-time rally game,im sure it was actually pretty hard to find, dont think there was many copies made,it wasnt mainstream/arcade as colin mcrea seemed more for the purist which is exactly what i loved about it, no one i knew liked to play it because it was to hard for them,I'd love to play it again
I´ve played it when it was released :D but I am old... 42.. :D ...and still playing RBR by the way ;)
I was a kid playing Colin McCree rally when it was new on 56k dial up modem. That was my first taste of what gaming online could be in the future. It was incredible for the day!
That looks Fun wish I could play it but I can't :( Thanks for the video Jardier, I enjoyed watching. Wish I would have held up as good in the last 16 years as that game
Sorry if I’ve missed the joke, why can’t you play it?
Thanks Man that was great just to see you so happy and back being a kid again, that is going to start my day with a smile
wow the graphics on this game are insane for its time.... And the sounds are amazing too
Comparable to iracing lmao
You are absolutely good with the steering wheel 👏🏻
I guess we are around the same age! Spent so many nights trading seats in front of my computer with my best m8 in highschool just trying so so hard to complete a stage properly with keyboard controls. It probably sounds ridiculous to some, but it was incredibly immersive.
I'm literally sat in my sim-rig now, in the year 2024, leaving this comment because RBR unlocked something in me that has turned into a lifelong obsession with driving.
Lets go mate!!!!! 🤩
VRally,Sega Rally,CMR then came RBR What a game!
Best rally game ever and forever!
This is hilarious! I just found an old videocap of me driving that Driving School special stage from my hard drive, and now this pops up on to my video feed :-D
Perhaps should download the RBR again! It was a bloody good rally game. The first driving game where driving with full throttle wasn't enough!
Do it!😅
I remember receiving this game as bonus to old polish gaming magazine CD-Action.... 15-16 years ago... Yes i feel old... THANK YOU
I bought the game for PlayStation 2 in 2005, at the time I didn't have a steering wheel and I remember well how frustrating it was to play it with a joypad, accustomed to titles like WRC and Colin McRae.
Loved your video, this truly is one game I will never throw out.
its wicked mate! Im glad you enjoy it :)
IIRC it also has modded VR support.
Was in highschool when it released , still remember some snow stage.
hajra magyar ralli :) koszonjuk a munkat az RBR modokkal!
This game is older than me but still looks better 😂
Sad
Just got into this recently, it’s amazing the FFB and physics feel with the RSF NGp is incredible
Played this game when it came out on a Logitech MOMO Force Feedback Wheel and Peddals. I fell in love. Not so sure why it still feels more connected to the road than new rally games but it seems to to me.
Probably because newer rally games always have perfectly flat roads while this one has bumpy and detailed roads
i'm not crying, i just have a Cote D'Azur stage in my eye
13:53. Brutal 😅. Great game, it brings back the memories. Need to check this out this evening..
go up in flame after landing - epic!
It also keeps Burns memory alive. Video games are great!
Those are the original pacenotes by Richard Burns Codriver, he wanted this style instead of 6 left etc. Also read by him!
An man what a game I wish I could play it. After this it made me think that you could do a public league on Dirt Rally and we could all compete against eachother. Great video as always
I just tried this game and it feels amazing! I really wish somone remastered it with nicer graphics and maybe added more cars :)
Superb video.....made me smile all the way through!
The hotlap best time online feature is addictive as a fresh rolled J 😎
Name dropping me like that, we should 100% set up a rally and go at it!
Still the best rally sim.
😁👍👍👍Driving physics are still unmatched.... (2023!!)
I’ve been playing this game and it is so fun! The closest I can get to motorsports on a budget 😂
Wow! This brings back some memories. Giving this a go tonight.
6:52 all this tree environment brings me nostalgic feelings from an old nokia java game called Rally 3D (it was built in with the Nokia 5130 Xpress Music) i used to play when i was 10~12 c":
Screw the graphics. This game is popular for its physics and the apmosphere it gives the player. Totally awesome game.
This game is a testament to gaming, shows we don’t want realism in graphics but in performance
Well said, well said indeed! True all the way!
Man I hope they make a successor to this game with some modern graphics
Nice! You can turn in crew chief. He gives you the corner information like in dirt rally.
One of the best Rally simulator ever!
Adore this game, never stopped playing it all these years. Even have the original CD :)
With mods, it's still better than Dirt 2 - amazing!
Brilliant Jards. What a jump loved the Audi brilliant 👍👍👍
Richard Hořák 4 ever!
So cool nostalgia kick!! Thank you @Jardier! ----- Can you please do aanother oldschool kick video about GT Legends??? :) I would really love that - probably more peeps would say the same :) - if you can do it then i will defenately feel like pensioner :D
4:42 My reaction exactly when I played it for the first time a few weeks ago.
I'm 17 years old now. This game is totally amazing for me. I like it so muchh
I played RBR a lot around 2014-2015 but haven't played it since. I loved Dirt Rally 1 and 2 but I feel I need to revisit RBR again. The modding has only improved!
I have the OG physical disc too :D
I like the stage where there's a big drop. I think that's in Australia.
you are so cheerful its a good watch
Richard Burns???????? Who are ya, Who are ya???
Grand Theft Auto 6 needs this level of driving physics.
19 years on, Richard Burns Rally still an amazing game despite lack of cars and stages.
It has dozens and dozens of cars and hundreds of stages.
The physics model and sound effects were the best. If it had wrc's graphics, it would of been unbeatable.
ohhhhhhh IMAGINE somebody would do like unreal engine or something transfer :o
Time rides are the best! 😍 great video Jadier! 👏
If I took that jump in VR I would be reaching for the puke bucket for sure! 😄
Hhahahaha
Bf3 and rbr. Back to the good old Games 😃
BF3 and BF4 are wild with graphics mods running on modern GPUs.
I played it! Was the nicest rally game ever!
Love this game! especially in VR!
I still Play that game its great
Me playing it after the premiere. Of course on the keyboard.
Theres no speed effect but if you get over 100 km/h it still feels fast amazing game
The only caveat: maybe not the best title for single-players.... .
RBR remains today one, if not the reference in terms of physics. nice vid
GPLaps and Turbo Racing stream this quite often
